高二英语下学期下册试题

After watching my mother deal with our family of five, I can’t understand why her answer to the question “What do you do?” is always “Oh, I’m just a housewife.” JUST a housewife? Anyone who spends most of her time in meal preparation and cleanup, washing and drying clothes, keeping the house clean, leading a scout troop(童子军团), playing taxi driver to us kids on the way to school, and making sure that all our family needs are met is not JUST a housewife. She’s the real Wonder Woman.

Why is it that so many mothers like mine think of themselves as second-class or something similar? Where has this idea come from? Have we males made them feel this way? Has our society made “going to work” outside the home seem more important than what a housewife must face each day?

I would be very curious to see what would happen if a housewife went on strike. Dishes would pile up. Food in the house would run out. No meals would appear on the table. There would be no clean clothes when needed. Walking and bus riding would increase. Those scout troops would have to break up.

I doubt if the man of the house would be able to take over. Oh, he might start out with the attitude that he can do just as good a job, but how long would that last? Not long, once he had to come home each night after work to more household duties. There would be no more coming home to a prepared meal; he’d have to fix it himself. The kids would all be screaming for something to eat. Once he quieted the kids, he’d have to clean the house, go shopping, make sure that kids got a bath, and fix lunches for the next day. Once the kids were down for the night, he might be able to crawl into an unmade bed and try to read the morning newspaper.

No, I don’t think many males are going to volunteer for the job. I know I don’t want it. So, thanks, mom! I’ll do what I can to create a national holiday for housewives. It could be suitably called Wonder Woman Day.

Regret can be a terrible addiction. Those who suffer from it so often become bitter and full of self-pity.It is an emotion that serious entrepreneurs(企业家)cannot afford, they must keep moving ahead and should not look back.As Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone said: when one door closes, another opens, but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.

Entrepreneurs must learn to manage the conflict between constant experiment, which means lots of painful mistakes and a fear of failure, which can lead to paralysis(能力丧失).

Likewise, past glory can be a killer. For example,Greg Dyke, who is a clever fellow, still looks back too much to his resignation as director-general of the BBC.He should move on and stop complaining about the injustice of it all. And Tim Waterstone should give up trying to buy back his bookshop chain, which he finally left more than lo years ago.He has tried to repurchase it at least five times.

By all means treasure experience and learn from your failure, but don't put yourself in the past sadness.Rather,go ahead and seize the day no matter what it is.I have little time for those who say: I wish I had started my own business. My only response is: so do it now.

A.One should feel regret about the past.                            B.One should give oneself opportunity.

C.One should act now and look into the future.           D.One should be confident about the past.

Mistakes are something did, said or believed, as a result of wrong thinking or understanding, lack of knowledges or skills. No one is perfect, but no one makes no mistake. Because many people are afraid of making mistakes, we don’t believe, say or do much. They behaved like this just because they want to make no mistake. As I said, it’s impossible. Being afraid of making mistakes is mistake itself. Only through mistakes can there be discover or progress. Making mistakes for seeking truth is much more better than doing nothing. Mistakes are the best teachers which guide us through difficulties. Don’t let mistakes scare you. Let’s learn on mistakes.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It is also the most neglect (忽视). Common reasons for not eating breakfast include having no time, not feeling hungry, traditional dislike and dieting. Breakfast simply means “break the fast’’. Your body spends at least 6 to 12 hours each night in a fasting state. In the morning your body needs energy for the day’s work ahead.

A good breakfast should provide 1/3 of your total calorie(卡路里)needs for the day. On average, we eat 400 less calories for breakfast than for dinner. If breakfast doesn’t appeal (吸引) to you in the morning, try eating a lighter dinner earlier in the evening or save half of your dinner for breakfast in the morning. If you still aren’t hungry in the morning, start with something small like juice or toast or have a nutritious (有营养的) mid-morning snack (小吃) later when you are hungry. So, you say you are on a diet. Some people fear that eating breakfast will make them hungrier during the day and they will eat more. It is true that eating breakfast is likely to make you feel hungry throughout the day. That is because your body is working correctly. Although you may feel as if you are eating more all day long, in reality you are probably not.

Not eating breakfast can also cause you t overeat, since a fall in blood sugar often makes you feel very hungry later. To make matters worse, since your body is in a slow state, it will not be able to burn those extra calories very efficiently (有效). If you feed your body healthy snacks and meals throughout the day, you are less likely to become hungry and stuff (填饱) yourself as soon as you begin to eat. Since breakfast is the first and most important meal of the day, choosing the right food is important. The best breakfast foods are fruits ,juice, lean meat and grain products such as bread, rice, noodles and cereals.

How to build confidence in your child

Give your child opportunities to try new things

When your child tries lots of different things, he’ll get to know what he’s good at and what he enjoys. He’ll also learn that most people do well at some things and not so well at others—and that’s fine. 36

Encourage your child to keep trying

If your child fails at something, help them understand that everyone makes mistakes.     37

Besides, you could share some examples of times that you have failed, or have needed to keep trying at something.

Model confidence on your own ability

38 For example, you could talk to your child about what you’re going to do to try to succeed at a task. You can also discuss things you’ve done that might have been scary or tough for you to do, showing your child that you’ve also been through times when you’ve needed confidence.

  39

If your child feels anxious in social situations, he might need some guidance from you. For example, body posture, smiling, connecting with others, showing interest in others’ activities and joining in conversations can help build confidence.

Praise your child’s efforts

If an exam, interview or game doesn’t work out the way your child hoped, try to praise your child for the efforts he put into the activity. 40

A. Practise social skills.

In the USA, the Amish are famous because they drive carriages instead cars, do not use TVs or refrigerators, and do not have personally telephones. Many people assume the Amish must have religious reasons for their many rule, but this is not true. In the truth, whenever a new technology is introduced, the Amish meet and discuss their advantages and disadvantages. They then vote on that they will accept it. The Amish reject cars because they like having tight communities where everyone live close together. They have no TVs or refrigerators so they do not have electricity—they did not think it is necessary and dislike dealing with strangers, such as the people work at the electric company.

In the 1500’s when the Spanish moved into what later was to become the southwestern United States, they came across the ancestors of the modern-day Pueblo, Hopi, and Zuni peoples. These ancestors, known variously as the basket makers, the Anasazi, or the Ancient ones, had lived in the area for at least 2,000 years. They were an advanced agricultural people who used irrigation to help grow their crops.

The Anasazi lived in houses constructed of adobe (土砖) and wood. Anasazi houses were originally built in holes and were entered from the roof. But around the year 700 A.D., the Anasazi began to build their homes above ground and join them together into groups of multistoried large buildings, which the Spanish called pueblos or villages. Separate rooms under the ground in these pueblos – known as kivas – were set aside for religious ceremonies. Each kiva had a hole that was believed to lead to the underworld. The largest pueblos had five stories and more than 800 rooms.

The Anasazi family was matrilinear (母系遗传). The holy objects of the family were under the control of the oldest female, but the actual ceremonies were conducted by her brother, or son. Women owned the rooms in the pueblo and the crops, once they were harvested. While still growing, crops belonged to the men, who, in contrast to most other Native American groups, planted them. The women made baskets and pottery; the men made cloth and jewelry.

Each village had two chiefs. The village chief dealt with land disputes (争议) and religious affairs. The war chief led the men in fighting during occasional conflicts that broke out with neighboring villages and directed the men in community building projects. The solid political and social organization of the Anasazi made it almost impossible for other groups to conquer them.

24. What do we know about the Anasazi people?

A.  They were immigrants from Spain.    B.   They were good at growing crops.

C. They stored their crops in caves.              D. They had battles against the Spanish.

25. What does the underlined word "they"(Paragraph 3) refer to?

A. Women.         B. Pueblos.              C. Crops.   D. Rooms.

26. What can be concluded from the text?

   A.  The Anasazi benefited from trade with the Spanish.

B.  The division of labor in Anasazi society was clear.

C.  The Spanish caused harm to Anasazi society.

D.  Constant conflicts existed in Anasazi society.

27. What can best describe the Anasazi?

A. Aggressive.           B. United.   C.  Honesty.    D. Selfish.
