Maybe God wants us to meet a few wrong people before meeting the right one so that when we finally meet the right person, we will know to be grateful for that gift.
The best kind of friend is the kind you can sit on a bench and sing with, never say a word, and then walk away feeling like it was the best conversation you’ve ever had. Don’t go for looks; they can cheat us. Don’t go for wealth; even that fades away. Go for someone who makes you smile because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright. Find the one that makes your heart smile.
When the door of happiness closes, another opens, but often times we look so long at the closed door that we don’t see the one that has been opened for us. It’s true that we don’t know what we’ve got until we lose it, but it’s also true that we don’t know what we’ve been missing until it arrives. The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past. You can’t get on well in life until you let go of past failures and heartaches.
Always put yourself in another’s shoes. If you feel that it hurts you ,it probably hurts the other person, too.
When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die, you’re the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.

A. share his / her success with you
B. help you improve your grades
C. give money to you when you are in need
D. accompany you and make you smile
31. What’s the main idea of the third paragraph?
A. Think about the past success.
B. Look at the closed door often.
C. Forget the past failures and heartaches.
D. Try our best to remember the lost things.
Towards evening, Jennifer was walking on the beach with a gentle breeze blowing through her hair. Looking up at the golden red sun ball, she was surprised by its color, deep red in the middle, softly fading into yellow. She could hear nothing but the waves and the seagulls flying up above in the sky.
The atmosphere relaxed her. This was what she needed. “It’s getting late,” she thought, “I must go home. My parents will be wondering where I am.” She wondered how her parents would react when she got home after the three days she was missing. She kept on walking, directing herself to bungalow(平房)163, where she spent every summer holiday. The road was deserted. She walked slowly and silently. Just in a few hundred meters, she would have been safe in her house.
It was really getting dark now. She wished she had her favorite coat on. It might keep her really warm. She imagined having it with her. This thought dissipated(消散) when she finally saw her front door. It seemed different. Nobody had taken care of the outside garden for a few days. She was shocked: her father was usually so strict about keeping everything clean and tidy, and now…
She entered the house. First, she went into the kitchen and saw a note written by her father,
“Dear Ellen, there’s some coffee ready; I went looking.” But where was Ellen? On the right side of the hallway was her parents’ room. She went in and saw her. Her mother, lying on the bed, was sleeping. Her face looked so tired, as if she hadn’t slept for days. She was really pale. Jennifer would have wanted to wake her up, but she looked too tired. So Jennifer just fell asleep beside her. When Jennifer woke up something was different. She wasn’t in her mother’s room and she wasn’t wearing the old clothes she ran away in. She was in her cozy bed in her pajamas(睡衣).
It felt so good being back home. Suddenly she heard a voice. “Are you feeling better now, dear? You know you got us very, very scared.”
28. The author mentions the views of the beach in Para. 1 in order to __________.

29. Jennifer decided to go home because __________.
A. it was getting cold
B. she realized her parents were worried
C. she began to miss her parents
D. she knew nobody would take care of the garden
30. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Jennifer went home to fetch her favorite coat.
B. Jennifer’s father was so worried that he couldn’t take care of the outside garden.
C. Jennifer understood why the outside garden was left uncared for.
D. Jennifer’s father used to be too strict with her.
31. Which of the following shows the change of Jennifer’s feeling?
A. Relaxed→Lonely→Tired→Upset.
B. Angry→Relaxed→Fearful→Comfortable.

Dear Tommy,
I am very sorry that I will not be able to attend the lectures tomorrow afternoon, that is on American culture. My mother was ill, and I will take him to the hospital tomorrow as my father is on business trip. I will take care of my mother until she is well, or I have to ask for several days’ leave. I am very interesting in the topic of American culture. It is real a pity that I’ll miss it. I wonder it if there will be any recording of the lecture. If any, I can listen it when it is convenient.
Thank you very much.
I was parked in front of the mall wiping off(洗刷)my car.I had just come from the car wash and was waiting for my wife to get out of work.
Coming my way from across the parking lot was what society would consider a bum. From the looks of him, he had no car, no home, no clean clothes, and no money. There are times when you feel generous but there are other times that you just don't want to be bothered. This was one of those "don't want to be bothered times".
" I hope he doesn't ask me for any money," I thought.
He didn't.He came and sat on the edge of the pavement in front of the bus stop but he didn't look like he could have enough money to even ride the bus. After a few minutes he spoke.
"That's a very pretty car," he said.
He was in rags but he had an air of dignity around him.His badly-grown blond beard kept more than his face warm.
I said, "thanks," and continued wiping off my car.He sat there quietly as I worked. The expected plea(乞求) for money never came.As the silence between us widened, something inside said, "ask him if he needs any help." I was sure that he would say "yes" but I held true to the inner voice.
"Do you need any help?" I asked.
He answered in three simple words that I shall never forget. We often look for wisdom in great men and women. We expect it from those of higher learning and achievements.I expected nothing but an outstretched dirty hand.He spoke the three words that shook me.
"Don't we all?" he said.
21. Why did the writer parked his car before the mall?
A. Because he wanted to pick up his wife.
B. Because he wanted to show off his car.
C. Because he wanted to wipe off his car.
D. Because he wanted to do some shopping.
22. Which has the closest meaning to the underlined word "bum" in Paragraph 2?
A. dustman B. driver C. beggar D. robber
23. Which is the best title for this text?
A. A good husband B. Didn't he need help?
C. Don't we all? D. One should be generous
Humans and many other mammals have unusually efficient internal temperature regulating systems that automatically maintain stable core body temperatures (核心体温) in cold winters and warm summers. In addition, people have developed cultural patterns and technologies that help them adjust to extremes of temperature and humidity(湿度).
In very cold climates, there is a constant danger of developing hypothermia(低体温),which is a life threatening drop in core body temperature to below normal levels. The normal temperature for humans is about 37.0℃.However,differences in persons and even the time of day can cause it to be as much as 6℃ higher or lower in healthy individuals. It is also normal for core body temperature to be lower in elderly people. Hypothermia begins to occur when the core body temperature drops to 34.4℃.Below 29.4℃,the body cools more rapidly because its natural temperature regulating system usually fails. The rapid decline in core body temperature is likely to result in death. However, there have been rare cases in which people have been saved after their temperatures had dropped to 13.9—15.6℃.This happened in 1999 to a Swedish woman who was trapped under an ice sheet in freezing water for 80 minutes. She was found unconscious, not breathing, and her heart had stopped beating, yet she was eventually saved despite the fact that her temperature had dropped to 13.7℃.
In extremely hot climates or as a result of uncontrollable infections, core body temperatures can rise to equally dangerous levels. This is hypothermia. Life threatening hypothermia typically starts in humans when their temperatures rise to 40.6—41.7℃.Only a few days at this extraordinarily high temperature level is likely to result in the worsening of internal organs and death.
13.Why can humans keep stable body temperatures in different seasons?
A. Because their bodies are unusually efficient.
B.Because they experience different climates.
C.Because they can adjust to cultural patterns and technologies.
D.Because they have internal temperature regulating systems.
14.What does Paragraph 2 mainly discuss?
A. The dangerous effects of hypothermia.
B.The change of body temperature.
C.The survival of the Swedish woman.
D.The regulating systems of natural temperature.
15.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Surviving in an ice trap
B.Getting to know hypothermia
C.Adapting to climate extremes
D.Changing core body temperature
One of the most successful singers of the twentieth century, Ella Fitzgerald has made several different styles her own. She was born in Virginia but was brought up in an orphanage in Yonkers, New York. Chick Webb spotted her in an amateur competition when she was sixteen. He engaged her to sing with his band and when he died in 1939, she took over.
Unlike Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald taught herself the sentimental music so popular in the 1930’s------ songs like “My Heart Belongs to Daddy”----- and her recordings became best-sellers. During the 1940’s she developed her own “scat singing” ---- a breathless, nonsense---syllable style---- for songs like “Flying Home” and “Lady Be Good.”
Ella Fitzgerald was the perfect musical partner for her friend, the trumpeter Louis Armstrong, matching him in warmth and artistry. “I just like music, period,” she said. “To me, it’s a story. There’s only one thing better than singing…. It’s more singing.”
21. What does the passage mainly discuss?
A. A comparison of Ella Fitzgerald and Bessie Smith.
B. The musical career of Ella Fitzgerald.
C. Ella Fitzgerald’s early childhood.
D. Ella Fitzgerald’s most recent recordings.
22.The underlined word “spotted” means______.
A. noticed B. brought up C. employed D. recognized
23.What does the passage imply about Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong?
A. They were the founders of “scat singing”.
B. They played the same musical instruments.
C. They performed well together.
D. They were a married couple.
Living an adventurous life
Nearly ten years ago, I was told that I had a brain tumor (瘤), and this experience changed my attitude about adventure forever. I thought that I was going to die and that all my adventures were over. I did not have a brain tumor, it turned out, but rather multiple sclerosis (多发性硬化), which meant that, although they were not over, the nature of my adventures could have to change.
Each morning that I wake up is a fresh event, something that I might not have had. Each gesture that I make carries the weight of uncertainty and demands significant attention; buttoning my shirt, changing a light bulb, walking down stairs. I might not be able to do it this time. If I could not delight in them, they would likely drown me in anger and in self-pity.
I admire the grand adventures of others. I read about them with interest. With Peter Matthiessen I have hiked across the Himalayas to the Crystal Mountain. I have walked with Annie Dillard up, down, into, and across Tinker Creek in all seasons. David Bain has gone with me along 110 miles of Philippine coast, and Ed Abbey has rowed me down the Colorado River, I enjoy the adventures of these courageous figures, who can strike out on difficult trips —2 miles, 250 miles, 3000 miles – ready to bear cold and tiredness – indeed not just to bear but to celebrate.
But as for me, I can no longer walk very far from the armchair in which I read. Some days I don’t even make it to the backyard. And yet I’m unwilling to give up the adventurous life; the difficulty of it, even the pain, the anxiety and fear, and the sudden brief lift of spirit that makes a hard journey more attractive.
I refine adventure, make it smaller and smaller. And now, whether I am moving on my hands and knees across the dining room to help my cat, lying wide – eyed in the dark battling another period of sadness, gathering flowers from the garden, meeting a friend for lunch, I am always having the adventures that are mine to have.
28.What happens to the author after her illness?
A.She has a fear of medical treatments.
B.She travels to places she has dreamed.
C.She can’t take care of herself any longer.
D.She is not drowned in anger and self-pity.
29.Why does the author admire the people mentioned in paragraph 3?
A.Because they write popular novels.
B.Because they are great adventurers.
C.Because they are famous geographers.
D.Because they struggle with hardship in life.
30.The author ends the article with a feeling of .
A. sadness B. sacrifice C. security D. satisfaction
31.What does “adventurous life” in the title mean to the author?
A.The struggles of great people against difficulties.
B.Her concern about giving up certain activities.
C.Her adapting to the situation with an illness.
D.The exciting traveling experience of others.

California is dry. The sunny state is suffering from a four-year drought — a serious and unusual lack of rainfall. The effects of the drought can be seen most clearly in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains. Much of the state’s water supply comes from the deep snow that falls in these mountains. That snow melts in the spring and fills the state’s rivers, lakes, and underground bodies of water. 36 .As a result, experts are now warning that California currently has only a one-year supply of usable water. Today we are standing on dry grass where there should be five feet of snow.
37 .That means people will have to limit their water use at home. They can do this by not watering lawns and reducing how much water they use for cleaning and cooking. 38. Places like golf courses currently use a lot of water to keep lawns green. They’ll need to find solutions for this problem that require less water.
California’s water crisis has been caused mainly by a lack of rain and snowfall over the past few years. 39 . Today, California is home to nearly 40 million people. This is double the number who lived there in 1960.
California simply has too many people for its natural resources. 40 . Many people have moved to the state because of its natural beauty and pleasant weather. And several major businesses are based in California, including Hollywood movie companies such as Warner Bros. and technology giants like Apple.
The drought is not likely to destroy California’s businesses, but the state will have to rethink how it grows and does things.
A. People can benefit a lot from this terrible drought.
B. This serious drought needs immediate action.
C. Nature has prepared so much for people.
D. Mother Nature didn’t intend for so many people.
E. But the snow hasn’t been falling.
F. But another big problem is its growing population.
G. Some public places will need to make big changes.
In Asia, there are many places for people to go to teach English. Most of the teachers are young and sociable, and there are a lot of parties there. Korea is usually the place most people go to, because they have the most benefits and highest salaries by working only twenty hours a week. 65. Only if you stay there for a long time will you save some money.
China is a new rising star and lots of people are going there. 66. You can save a sizable amount and complete all your loans back home. Besides, Chinese people are enterprising and you can learn a lot from them. In China, Taiwan is a good place to go, especially for females who want to earn much, but there are not many adult classes offered.
The Middle East offers very high salaries for teachers, all of which is tax free. 67. Most of the people who tend to teach there are older and more conservative, so they don’t expect a party scene.
Italy and Spain are two beautiful countries where you can try your fortune. 68. Tourism is another industry in these countries, where English knowledge is useful. Moreover, by teaching in Europe you have the chance to travel every weekend to a new country and visit a new culture besides a good salary. 69.
A. Europe has a lot to offer.
B. It is a great way for people to see a new place.
C. Teaching English overseas is a really rewarding experience.
D. Like Japan, the pay is quite good, but the cost of living is much cheaper.
E. Japan is also a good choice, but the cost of living eats up a lot of your money.
F. However, you must be a certified teacher with years of experience if you want to teach there.
G. Fashion industry in Milan would love to hire well-known English-speaking people to work with international models and designers.
