Many teenagers feel that the most important people in their lives are their friends. They believe that their family members don’t know them so well as their friends do. In large families, it is quite often for brothers and sisters to fight with each other and then they go to their friends for some ideas.

It is very important for teenagers to have one good friend or a group of friends. Even when they are not with their friends, they usually spend a lot of time talking among themselves on the phone. This communication is very important in children’s growing up, because friends can talk about something, and these things are difficult to say to their family members.

However, parents often try to choose friends for their children. Some parents may even stop their children from meeting their good friends. Have you ever thought of the following questions?

The students first listed the problems in order of difficulty.   18    They designed ways to test their solutions. And they wrote needed software systems. Even the winning team from Shanhai Jiaotong University in China was not able to solve all the problems within the given time limit. Stanford’s team solved five problems and finished in 14th place. Stanford was one of twenty-one American universities that took part in the contest this year.

19   . It began in 1970 at Texas A and M University. The contest quickly became popular in the United States and Canada. It developed and grew as more and more schools took part in local and area contests.

The first final competition was held in 1977 at the Association for Computer Machinery Computer Science Conference. Do dogs understand us?

Be careful what you say around your dog. It might understand more than you think.

A dog__61__ (name) Rico recognizes about 200 objects, say researchers in Germany. The dog also appears to be able to learn new words as__62__ (easy) as a 3-year-old child.

In one experiment, the researchers took all 200 items that Rico is supposed to know and divided them into 20 groups of 10 objects. Then the __63__ (own)  told the dog to go and fetch one of the items and bring __64__ back. In four tests, Rico got right 37 out of 40 commands.

In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never seen before and put it in a room with seven toys whose names the dog already knew. The owner then told Rico to fetch the object, __65__  (use) a word the dog had never heard before.

The correct object was chosen in seven out of l0 tests, suggesting that the dog had worked out the answer by process of elimination(排除法). A month later, Rico remembered half of the new names, __66__ is even more impressive.

Rico __67__  (think) to be smarter than the average dog. For one thing, Rico is a border collie, __68__ breed (品种)known for its mental abilities. In __69__ (add), the 9-year-old dog has been trained to fetch toys by their names since the age of nine months.

It's hard to know if all dogs understand at __70__ (little) some of the words we say. Even if they do, they can't talk back. Still, it wouldn't hurt to sweet-talk your dog every now and then. You might just get a big, wet kiss in return!

Ola Orekunrin is the founder and managing director of the for-profit company, Flying Doctors Nigeria Ltd., the first emergency air ambulance service in the country.

In Nigeria, where road conditions can be poor, and rural clinics are often unprepared to deal with major medical emergencies, Flying Doctors has become a lifesaver, airlifting patients from remote areas to hospitals, and providing care on the way.

London-born Orekunrin was inspired to set up the company after her 12-year-old sister died. When she was still in medical school in the UK, her sister was on holiday in Nigeria and unexpectedly needed emergency treatment. The nearest clinic wasn’t able to treat her. The family tried to find an air ambulance to move her to an appropriate facility, but the quickest-available service was far away in South Africa. Her sister had died by the time a flight become available.

“I was filled with deep sadness and almost anger,” Orekunrin says. “I wanted to come to Nigeria and try to contribute in some way.”

After studying other models of emergency air ambulance in the UK and other parts of Africa, Orekunrin knew it would be the most effective way to help patients access to the proper facilities in a large area that is often difficult to travel by car.

But getting Flying Doctors off the ground wasn’t easy. Orekunrin began by renting aircraft as a way to keep costs down. She then established partnerships with hospitals across Africa and abroad and started her company nearly five years ago. The company now has 20 helicopters and jets and a staff that includes seven senior flight physicians.

Orkunrin has also worked toward improving medical care acoss Nigeria. Flying Doctors now provides scholarships to medical students and has established partnerships with rural non-governmental organizations, such as the Starlite Hopes Initiative, in Nigeria’s Delta State, which offers care to the poor.

Orekunrin hopes to keep finding new ways to improve medical service in Nigeria. The young doctor knows there are challenges ahead, but as she’s always shown, even the sky is not the limit.

Have you ever made contact with the creative spirit, that certain something hard to describe, but full of good—and sometimes great—ideas? It is more than an occasional great thought. When we feel the moving of the creative spirit, it brings to life a style of being: a lifetime filled with the desire to invent, to explore new ways of doing things, and to turn dreams into reality.

That flash of inspiration is the final moment of a process marked by unique stages—the basic steps in creative problem-solving. The first stage is preparation, when you look for any information that might be important. It's when you let your imagination run free.

But one barrier(障碍) is the inside voice of judgment that locks up our creative spirit within the limits of what we think acceptable. It's the voice that whispers to you, "They'll think I'm foolish," or "That will never work." But we can learn to recognize this voice of judgment and have the courage to discount its unhelpful advice.

Once you have thought about all the relevant(相关的) pieces and pushed your mind to the limits, you can let the problem remain and take in all you have gathered. It's a stage when much of what goes on occurs outside your focused awareness. As the saying goes, "You sleep on it."

We are more open to creative thoughts from the unknowing mind when we are not really thinking of anything. That is why daydreams are so useful in the search for creativity. Anytime you can just daydream and relax is useful in the creative process: a shower, long drives, a quiet walk, etc.

With luck, daydreaming will lead to a light turning on above your head, when all of a sudden the answer will come to you as if from nowhere. This is the popular stage—the one that usually gets all the glory and attention, the moment that people sweat and long for, the feeling "This is it!" But the thought alone is still not a creative act. The final stage is translation, when you take your creative thought and transform it into action; it becomes useful to you and others.

56. In Paragraph 1, “the moving of the creative spirit” probably means ________.

  A. preparation              B. exploration            C. problem-solving        D. inspiration

57. According to the article, what keeps us from creativity?

  A. Having less information to form a good idea.

  B. Relying on others during the creative process.

  C. Caring about other people’s opinions about us.

  D. Thinking about too many ideas at the same time.

58. What can we learn from the fifth paragraph?

  A. The unknowing mind is very difficult for us to understand.

  B. Creativity arrives when we aren’t focused on anything.

  C. Daydreaming is useless and has nothing to do with creativity.

  D. Showers, long drives and quiet walk are good for our bodies.

59. When does creativity become useful to us and others?

  A. When thought is turned into action.            B. When people understand our ideas.

  C. When the popular stage is reached.             D. When we think “This is it!”.

60. Which of the following would the author probably support?

  A. The creative spirit means an occasional great thought.

  B. Others’ voice of judgment allows us to ignore barriers.

  C. Creative problem-solving calls for barrier-free imagination.

  D. Daydreaming is sure to bring a sudden answer to a problem.

To many web-building spiders, most of whom are nearly blind, the web is their essential window on the world: their means of communicating, capturing prey(猎物), meeting mates and protecting themselves. A web-building spider without its web is like a man cast away on an island of solid rock, totally out of touch and destined to starve to death.

So important is the web to an orb-web spider's survival that  the animal will continue to construct new webs daily even if it is being starved. For 16 days the starving spider builds completely normal webs. Then, as the animal gets scrawnier(憔悴的),  it constructs a wider-meshed web using fewer strands(线). Such webs would only trap larger prey, which is more economical from the perspective of a starving spider.

The spider stores energy by recycling web protein. It simply eats its own web each evening and reuses it to produce new silk. In studies with radioactively, labeled materials, it was found that 95 percent of web protein reappears in the next day' web. Most of the energy needed for web-building is used in walking over the strands as they are laid down

Scientists are impressed by the adaptability of the spider's highly preprogrammed brain, which is larger for its size than the brain of any other invertebrate(无脊推动物). If web-building is interrupted, or if some of the existing strands are destroyed, the spider simply goes back to see where the web is left off and then finishes building a normal web. One spider will finish building the incomplete web of another.

8. What is probably the best title for the passage?

A. Secrets of Spiders' Adaptability

B. Secrets of the Spiders' Life

C. Importance of Webs to Spiders

D. Spiders' Highly Preprogrammed Brain

9. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. Web-building spiders will probably die without their webs

B. One Web-building spider usually conducts one web

C. Most spiders will stop conducting webs when hungry

D. Web-building spiders have good eyesight.

10. A spider conducts a wider-meshed web when_

A. it is 16 days old

B. it is getting weaker

C. it has fewer wends

D. it hunts for food

11. A spider's ability to finish an incomplete web proves that_

A. it reuses its web protein to reproduce new silk

B. it is able to rebuild a destroyed web

C. the incomplete web is much more important

D. it has a highly preprogrammed brain

I can hard believe it, and my school life is almost over. Prom night has come and gone, and I received my high school diploma at last. That is a good thing that the exams are finished. I feel so excited to think clearly! It seems strange to think that in a few day’s time I’ll be walking out school gates forever. A first thing I’m going to do is to take a long vacation! Meanwhile, I find myself look back at my senior year, and thinking about that all the wonderful things that have happened.

VMy son was a second-grader. He went to school by bus every day. He was the first student on in the morning, as we were farthest from school, and the last student off in the evening. I was a teacher myself and it was a comfort to realize the school staff (职员) were all working as hard as I was to provide a safe learning environment.

One day I came home from work and waited for my son to get home for a long time. Then I called the school.Perhaps hes just a bit late, said the secretary.I will call the driver to see if those children are home.A few minutes later, I answered the phone to hear that the other students were home. Then I called his friends’ parents, to see if perhaps he had got off at their stop to play. The answers were all “No.”

By that time, it was dark and I was scared. My home was in the mountain areas, and it was said that a wolf had come up somewhere. My husband wasn’t at home, so I forced myself to calm down and decided to go out to look for him. I was about to go out when the telephone rang; it was from the driver. “He’s okay,” I heard. “He was asleep on the seats in the back, under a couple of jackets. Since it’s dark, can he spend the night with my family?”

I was relieved and agreed. Since my son had a great adventure, the school started giving a copy of the list to the driver, so he could check off the childrens names when they got off the bus. I think highly of the school for taking the cautionary (警戒的) step ahead; it is a sign of their concern for students, parents, and staff.

A. in the bus                         B. at his own home

C. at the driver’s home                D. in the secretary’s office

12. The author wrote the text to ________.

Muzak

The next time you go into a bank, a store, or a supermarket, stop and listen. What do you hear?    1  It’s similar to the music you listen to, but it’s not exactly the same. That’s because this music was especially designed to relax you, or to give you extra energy. Sometimes you don’t even realize the music is playing, but you react to the music anyway.

Quiet background music used to be called "elevator (电梯) music" because we often heard it in elevators. But lately we hear it in more and more places, and it has a new name "Muzak". About one-third of the people in America listen to "Muzak" everyday. The music plays for 15 minutes at a time, with short pauses in between. It is always more lively between ten and eleven in the morning, and between three and four in the afternoon, when people are more tired.     2

If you listen to Muzak carefully, you will probably recognize the names of many of the songs. Some musicians or songwriters don’t want their songs to be used as Muzak, but others are happy when their songs are chosen. Why?     3

Music is often played in public places because it is designed to make people feel less lonely when they are in an airport or a hotel. It has been proven that Muzak doeswhat it is designed to do. Tired office workers suddenly have more energy when they hear the pleasant sound of Muzak in the background.     4     Supermarket shoppers buy 38 percent more groceries.

5     . They say it’s boring to hear the same songs all the time. But other people enjoy hearing Muzak in public places. They say it helps them relax and feel calm. One way or another, Muzak affects everyone. Some farmers even say their cows give more milk when they hear Muzak!

    A. Some people don’t like Muzak.

    B. The music gives them extra energy.

    C. Music is playing in the background.

    D. Factory workers produce 13 percent more.

    E. Muzak tends to help people understand music better.

    F. They get as much as $4 million a year if their songs are used.

    G. Muzak is played in most of the big supermarkets in the world.
