Last week, I take part in the Cultural Exchange Week. I enjoyed myself in England. I visited city museum and several place of interest, which made me have better understanding of the English society, culture and history.

What’s more, I was luckily enough to meet my pen friend Tom there. I stayed at his home. And I’ll never forget the days when we spent together. Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款台), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.

I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend's. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.

Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon, I returned to my car and found that I'd left the lights on all day, and the battery was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership — a shop selling cars — was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.

"Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?" I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said.

"Thank you" — two powerful words. They're easy to say and mean so much.

Golf has always prides itself on its standards and rich tradition. But increasingly a victim of its own image and conventional ways, golf has lost five million players in the last decades, according to the National Golf Foundation, with 20 percentage of the existing 25 million golfers tending to quit in the next few years. People under 35 have especially rejected the game, saying it takes too long to play, too difficult to learn and has too many tiresome rules.

Many of golf’s leaders are so convinced the sport is in danger of following the baby boomer generation (born between the years 1946 and 1964) into the grave that they start an alternative movement leading to unconventional forms of golf with new equipment, new rules and revolutionary changes to courses.

Among the unconventional types of golf is an entry-level version in which the holes are 15 inches wide, about four times the width of a standard one. A 15-inch-hole event was held here at the Reynolds Plantation resort on Monday. It featured the top professional golfers Sergio Garcia and Justin Rose.

“A 15-inch-hole could help junior golfers, beginning golfers and older golfers score better, play faster and like golf more,” said Garcia.

Rose said he was planning to use an expanded hole to reintroduce the game to his five-year-old son, who rejected the game recently after he had grown tired of failing at it.

Golf still ranks among the US’s top 10 recreational sports activities, and given its tradition, it is no surprise that all golfers don’t agree with the alternative movement.

“I don’t want to reform the game and cheapen it,” said Curtis Strange, a two-time United States Open Champion and an analyst for ESPN. “I don’t like any of that staff. And, it’s not going to happen, either. It’s all talk.”

But Ted Bishop, the president of the PGA of America, argues that it is those purists’ worry that has held the sport back for 20 years. “I went to a golf club’s 125th anniversary dinner not long ago, and the absolute majority of the people in the room were over 55,” said Bishop. “We should be asking, ‘on that club’s 150th anniversary, who’s going to attend?’”

28. According to the passage, golf ________.      .

30. what do we learn about the golf event held on Monday?

  A. It was set up especially for young children.        B. It proved to be more difficult to play than usual.

  C. It used holes much wider than the standard ones.    D. It was a practical experiment of the traditional golf.

31. Which of the following can describe Ted Bishop’s attitude towards reforming golf?

  A. Opposite           B. Indifferent         C. Critical       D. Supportive

There is growing concern about food insecurity in the developing world. Rising food prices, weather emergencies and political problems are deepening the struggle for families in many countries.

Three UN agencies have published a report recently, saying high prices are likely to continue. Gregory Barrow, who is with the World Food Program in Rome, says, “If you look at the places where the World Food Program works, particularly in developing countries, you see people who might be spending more than 60 percent of their salary in purchasing food for their families.”

East Africa is suffering its worst drought in years. In Kenya, at least three and a half million people are going hungry, mostly in the north. Yet food is going to waste in central Kenya. Now, farmers there want the government to buy their food and give it to those in need. Farmers say bad roads and lack of transportation make it difficult for them to get their produce to the market.

Mr. Barrow says, “It needs the government to make some arrangements such as providing transport. They can buy it at a good price, then give it to those people instead of asking for food from overseas, which is very bad. When we are throwing away food, they are asking for food from overseas.”

Economists say that imports reduce local food prices, decrease productivity(生产效率) and increase the dependency on other countries. Farmers in Kenya hope the government can pay higher prices for their crops so that they can feed more Kenyans.

32. What is the best title for this passage?

34. What does “they” in the fourth paragraph refer to? 111]

A.    The people of northern Kenya.  B.      Government officials.

C.    The farmers of central Kenya.   D.     Kenyan economists.

35. Which of the following statements is TRUE, according to this passage?

A.    Gregory Barrow suggests that Kenya make good use of overseas food.

B.    People in northern Kenya are suffering the drought less than the central.

C.    Economists believe importing food from abroad may cause problems.

Winters in parts of the United States can be cold and, at the times, snowy. Sometimes violent storms with high winds combine with high temperatures to produce heavily snowfall. It turns a dirty city into a winter

wonderland overnight. A blanket of snow softens a city's hard edges. It quiets loud noises. There are little or no traffic and no car horns sound. Everything is white, quiet and peaceful. Often snow leads school cancellations(取消). That is the best news to a child's ear. I remember when I was a young schoolgirl. I will wake up very early and listen to the news to find out that my school was among those canceled. Boys and girls put on their warmest clothes, and go outdoor for winter fun. A popular winter activity for children are sled riding.

About ten men in every hundred suffer from color blindness in some way. Women are luckier, only about one in two hundred is affected in this matter. Perhaps, after all, it is safer to be driven by a woman!

There are different forms of color blindness. In some cases a man can not see deep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shades of green. Sometimes a person cannot tell the difference between blue and green. In rare cases an unlucky man may see everything in shades of green--- a strange world indeed.

Color blindness in human beings is a strange thing to explain. In a single eye there are millions of very small things called “cones”, which help us to see in a bright light and to tell difference between colors. There are also millions of “rods” but these are used for seeing when it is nearly dark. They show us shape but no color.

Some insects have favorite colors. Mosquitoes (蚊子) like blue but do not like yellow. A red light will not attract insects, but a blue lamp will. In a similar way human beings also have favorite colors. Yet we are lucky. With the help of the cones in our eyes we can see many beautiful colors by day, and with the aid of the rods we can see shapes at night. One day we may even learn more about the invisible colors around.

29Why do some people say it is safer to be driven by women?

BThere are fewer color-blind women.

CWomen are better at driving than men.

DWomen are physically weaker but quicker in thinking

30.This passage is mainly about ________.

31.According to the passage, with the help of the “cones” we can ________.

Bsee in weak light

Ckill mosquitoes

Dtell different shapes

32.We can attract and kill mosquitoes by using a ________.
