高二英语上学期上册试题

My grandfather lived only half a mile away from where I grew up in New York. Every day, he would walk down to our house and bring my dad newspapers. Along with the papers he would bring a small bag of treats (美食) for my two brothers and me.

Western NY had severe winter weather: rain, sleet (雨夹雪), or even 3-feet of snow. Even when he was 81, he still walked the half-mile every single day. As a child, I looked forward to the daily treats, but now I realize he braved the harsh weather each day just to see us smile; I appreciate that more than anything.

My grandfather touched many lives. A woman who had been in hospital for five years told me her story. She said my grandfather used to visit her twice a week at her home: to read to her, play bridge (桥牌), or just chat. It lasted for years without a stop. She rarely had other visitors. Even a hitchhiker who my grandfather had picked up told me of my grandfather’s influence on his life. My grandfather took the traveller to his home for free. After learning that the man was homeless my grandfather gave him a place to stay and a warm meal. The man told me that no one had ever been so nice to him. He later found a job in a supermarket.

I was touched, but not surprised to know all of the touching stories from which I understood my grandfather’s selflessness. I have since tried to learn from him to help others. Although he died years ago, we still respect him.

Too many people want others to be their friends, but they dont give friendship back. That is why some friendships dont last long. To have a friend, you must learn to be one. You must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous; be understanding.
Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must: be able to trust one another. If you do not tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven
t been honest, you may lose the friends trust. Good friends always count on one another to speak and act honestly.
Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You do not have to give your lunch money or your clothes. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings, These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them, you help your friend know you better.
Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and helping with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend can be the first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend
s place so you can understand the problem better.
No two friendships are ever exactly alike. But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friends, you must practise honesty, generosity and understanding.

Due to the increasing number of violence acts produced in schools all over the world, more and more parents prefer to have their children educated at home rather than at school. This way they can ensure their safety and well-being, although teachers and school representatives are trying to improve the situation in schools by increasing the number of the persons in charge of the safety of the students.

The main reason for violence acts are the films and cartoons that fill the children's time They want to do everything they watch on TV and never think of the consequences, and they may hurt a classmate or a teacher

On the other hand, parents are not fully satisfied with the children's results obtained in classes and they consider private classes would have better results

When a teacher has to watch 30 students in class he can't probably see what each of them is doing, how he is writing, or if he understands the explanationsAt home the teacher can explain in details everything the child doesn't understand as many times as he considers proper

And many times the child grows fond of the teacher at home, who becomes his best friend, and who helps him whenever he needs someone to talk to

However, the best solution would be a mixture between the education received at school and that at home, because school makes children communicate and socializeKeeping a child at home for fear there might happen something bad to him only makes the child's character weak and prevents him from knowing what real life isStaying in a crystal ball only does harm to the child

All in all, schools have been created to help children, not to harm them, so it's best to keep children in these special places, where they learn, laugh, have fun and make new friends

21. The writer's purpose in writing the text is to________________.

A. teach parents the ways to keep their children safe

B. show solutions to developing children's character

House Sitting

In many countries of the world people do what is called house sitting. It means that if owners of the house are going away, they want someone to come into their home and look after the house and maybe pets while they are away.

In Australia, many people travel. After people retire, they might buy a van and travel all over the country.    36

So if someone wants to travel or go away for some reason, they might want someone in their home to care for it and keep the gardens tidy. House sitters might have to care for pets. Also, quite a few people have swimming pools in their back yard and they need cleaning.    37   I feel it is a great way of seeing the country, because you go and stay in a new city, get to meet new people, and have time to go sightseeing in a new area.

38     There are websites where you find the advertisements by people who want to travel, and by replying to the advertisement, you can make arrangements to go and look after their home.

There are some requirements to be a house sitter. You must be a trusted person, so that the home owner knows you will not steal anything. You must be able to go when the house owner wants you to go, so you need lots of free time.    39   You need to be good with pets, able to care for cats and dogs, or other pets they may have.

Some house sitting jobs are just for a few days or a couple of weeks while the house owners have a short holiday. Sometimes it is for much longer. We have had one house sit for six months, while the home owner travelled to Europe.

40   Then you can travel to many different countries and stay there. One of the important things to get is references from the home owners where you have stayed. A reference is a written letter to say that you are trustworthy and have looked after their home well. You can show these letters to possible house sitting jobs and they know you will do a good job.

A. I have done house sitting many times.

B. Thousands of people do this all the time.

C. It is also possible to do house sitting in other countries.

D. Generally you have many opportunities to get a house sitting job.

E. You must take a little care over what your description says about you.

F. This is an international house sitting service for all city and country areas.

G. You must have a good car, so you can travel to different parts of the country.

A popular saying goes. "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." However, that's not really  true.  Word  have the powerver to us up  or tear us down. It doesn t matter it the words come from someone else or ourselves  the positive and negative effects  are just as lasting.

We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We're usually too ashamed to admit it though. In fact, we really shouldn't he because more and more experts  believe   taking to ourselves loud is a healthy habit.

This "self-talk" helps us encourage ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Be aware, though , that as much as 77%  of  self-talk tends to he negative So in order to stay  positive we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean  your room, join me in saying "Good job!"

Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have‘ But we should be aware that our words cause  certain responses  in others. For example, when returning  an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably respond in a similar manner Harsh(刻薄的)and  cirtical    language will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive.

Words possess power because of their lasting effect. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking. we should always ask  ourselves:Is it true? Is it loving? Is it needed? If what want to say doesn't pass this test, then it's better left unsaid.

Words   have  power  both positive and negative. Those around  us receve encouragement  when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem(自尊)and motivate  others to do their best.Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.

39. The main idea of the first paragraph is that    .

    A. not sticks and stones hut words will hurm us

    B. inspiring words give us confidence

    C. negative words may let us down

    D. words have a lasting effect on us

40. There  is no need for us to feel embarrassed when we talk to ourselves

    bccaus        .

A.almost even body has the habiT of talking lo themselves

B.talking to ourselves always gives us courage

C.we can benefit from talking to ourselves

D.it does harm to have "self-talk" when we are alone

41. The underlined pan in the third paragraph means that  we should  also timely

               .

   A.remind ourselves         B. praise ourselves

C.make ourselves relaxed   D. give ourselves amusement

A.encouraging words are sure to lead to kind offers

B.negative words may stimulate(刺激)us to make more progress

    C. people tend to remember friendly words

Most people today think of chocolate as something sweet to eat or drink and can be easily found in stores around the world. It might surprise you that chocolate was once highly treasured.
The wealthy people of Spain first enjoyed a sweetened chocolate drink. Later, the popularity of the drink spread throughout Europe. Chocolate remained a drink that only wealthy people could afford to drink until the eighteenth century. During the period known as the Industrial Revolution, new technologies helped make chocolate less costly to produce.
Farmers grow cacao trees in many countries in Africa, Central and South America, but these trees are difficult to grow. They require an exact amount of water, warmth, soil and protection. After about five years, cacao trees start producing large fruits called pods, which grow near the trunk of the tree. The seeds inside these pods are harvested to make chocolate. Growing cacao is very hard work for farmers. Today, chocolate industry officials, activists, and scientists are working with farmers. They are trying to make sure that cacao can be grown in a way that is easy for the farmers and safe for the environment.
The market value of the yearly cacao crop around the world is more than five billion dollars.Chocolate is especially popular in Europe and the United States. Each year, Americans eat an average of more than 5 kilograms of chocolate per person. Specialty shops that sell costly chocolate are also very popular. Weather can be forecasted in various ways. When people want to know about the weather, they usually go to their radios, TVs, newspapers, or to the Internet. However, you can also find many weather signs among wildlife, because of their highly developed senses. Drops in air pressure(压力) produce an effect on small animals in many ways. Mice and deer are good weather indicators. People who spend a lot of time outdoors have observed that, before a storm, field mice come out of their holes and run around. Deer leave high ground and come down from the mountains.

Birds are especially good weather indicators because they also show the effect of a pressure drop in many ways. For example, some birds become irritable(急躁的)and quarrelsome and will fight over a piece of bread. Other birds chirp(叽叽喳喳)and sing just before a storm. It seems they know they won’t get another chance for an hour or two. Birds also seek safe places before a storm. You will sometimes see birds settling in trees or gathering together on a wire close to a building. Pre-storm low pressure makes the air so thin that birds have difficulty flying.

It is unusual to see many birds flying overhead in the summertime, rather than during the periods in the spring or autumn. Watch for other weather signs if you see this. If they fly in the wrong direction, they may be flying ahead of a storm.

By paying closer attention to some important signs in nature, we can become better prepared for any kind of weather.

45. There will be a storm if birds ______.

  A. dance in trees                                               B. share a piece of bread

  C. come down from tall trees                         D. make more noise than usual

46. How can birds sense the coming of a storm?

  A. By feeling a drop in air pressure.

  B. By feeling a drop in air temperature.

  C. By noticing the change of wind directions.

  D. By noticing the movements of other animals.

47. The best title for the text would be ______.

  A. Signs of a Storm                                     B. Drops in Air Pressure

  C. Animals’ Sharp Senses                             D. Nature’s Weather Signs

The first and best of victories is for a man to conquer himself; to be conquered by himself is, of all things, the most shameful, says Plato. Self-control is at the root of all the advantages. Let a man give in to his impulses (冲动) and feelings, and from that moment he gives up his moral freedom.

A single angry word has lost many a friend. When Socrates found in himself any temper or anger, he would check it by speaking low in order to control himself. If you are conscious of being angry, keep your mouth shut so that you can hold back rising anger. Many a person has dropped dead in great anger. Fits of anger bring fits of disease. Whom the gods would destroy they first make mad. Keep cool, says George Herbert, for fierceness (狂怒) makes error a fault.

To be angry with a weak man is to prove that you are not strong yourself. Anger, says Pythagoras, brings with folly(愚蠢)and ends with regret. You must measure the strength of a man by the power of the feelings he conquers, not by the power of those which conquer him.

Self-control is man’s last greatest victory.

If a man lacks self-control he seems to lack everything. Without it he can have no patience, no power to govern himself; he can have no self-confidence, for he will always be controlled by his strongest feeling. If he lacks self-control, the very backbone and nerve of character are lacking also.

56. What does the reader learn from the first paragraph?

A. The greatest victory for a man is to conquer everything except himself.

B. One’s moral freedom is based on the control of himself.

C. To control oneself is the most difficult in one’s life.

D. If a person is too stubborn, he will feel most shameful.

57. If a man lacks self-control, he lacks all of the following EXCEPT _______.

D. self-confidence

58. The author’s main purpose in writing this article is to _______.

B. teach people how to control everything in order to make a great success

C. distinguish all kinds of self-control and suggest ways for keeping it

D. advise people not to lose temper so as to make and keep more friends

59. The passage is mainly developed by _____.

A. analyzing causes                        B. making comparisons

C. examining differences                   D. listing quotations(引证)
