高二英语上学期上册试题

Anxious about being alone? Don’t be.    36   , some researchers suggest it is wise for us to overcome the anxiety that seems to accompany loneliness, as there are lots of benefits of being alone.

We miss joy and pleasure less.

37   . This kind of fear causes us to give up much fun. For example, people have activities that they want to do—see a movie or a show that’s coming to town for one night only—but they lack friends to go with them, and so they miss it,     38    .

     39     .

In a previous study, researchers found that those who spend a lot of time with close friends may be less associated with others, causing others feel they are cold and proud. So learning to be alone means leaning to get along well with strangers.

We become better people.

Some experts think being alone can provide us a good environment for us to reflecting on our actions and thinking about future personal improvements.    40   .The process allows us to look back upon the past, and return to the world with more insight and energy.

A. For many, the idea of going to a concert or out to dinner alone is terrified.

B. However, doing an activity alone isn’t any less enjoyable than taking a friend

C. The followings are the advantages of doing so

D. We’re kinder to strangers

E. Spending some time to do these things can make us happier and more independent

F. We can have fun with other friends

G. Although being alone isn’t our most comfortable state

Why do people drink too much, eat too much, smoke cigarettes or take drugs? What’s to blame for all the bad behavior? Most people would say that, while these self-destructive (自我毁灭的) acts can have many root causes, they all have one obvious thing in common: they are all examples of failures of self-control, lacking the will power to resist(抵抗) them.

According to a recent study, however, if you really think about it, something about that simple answer doesn’t quite make sense. In fact, it turns out that sometimes it’s having will power that really gets you into trouble.

Think back to the time you took your very first sip of beer. Disgusting, wasn’t it? When my father gave me my first taste of beer as a teenager, I wondered why anyone would voluntarily drink it. And smoking? No one enjoys their first cigarette — it tastes awful. So even though smoking, and drinking alcohol or coffee, can become temptation (诱惑) you need will power to resist, they never, ever start out that way.

Just getting past those first horrible experiences actually requires a lot of self-control. Ironically (讽刺的是), only those who can control themselves well, rather than give in to them, can ever come to someday develop a “taste” for Budweiser beer, Marlboro cigarettes, or dark-roasted Starbucks coffee. We do it for social acceptance. We force ourselves to consume alcohol, cigarettes, coffee and even illegal drugs, in order to seem experienced, grown-up, and cool.

These bad habits aren’t self-control failures — far from it. They are voluntary choices, and they are in fact self-control successes. Self-control is simply a tool to be put to some use, helpful or harmful. To live happy and productive lives, we need to develop not only our self-control, but also the wisdom to make good decisions about when and where to apply it.

28.  What do most people think causes bad behavior?

A. Being forced by others.

B. Not having enough will power.

C. Enjoying their first experiences.

D. Following the examples of their friends.

29. The author mentions his experience in the third paragraph to prove ____.

   A. will power helps develop bad habits sometimes

   B. drinking beer is harmful to the health of teenagers

   C. self-control should be developed when one is young

   D. everyone can be challenged by different temptations

30. In the last paragraph, the author stresses that ____.

   A. without self-control, no one can succeed

   B. bad habits don’t always lead to bad results

   C. applying self-control correctly is important

   D. people can develop wisdom from bad behavior

31. What would be the best title for the passage?

   A. My First Sip of Beer        B. Do You Have Will Power ?

   C. Will Power Benefits Us          D. Dark Side of Self-control

A few years ago, a company called Space Marketing came up with a plan to send a mile–long advertisement into space. To advertising agencies (机构), it would have been “a dream come true”. However, advertising standards agencies finally decided not to allow Space Marketing to go ahead with their plans and they were forced to give them up.

Space may indeed be the final place for advertisers, because on Earth we are already surrounded by advertising wherever we are and whatever we are doing. Apart from the obvious adverts that we see every day on TV, and in newspapers and magazines, there is a whole ‘other world’ of advertising messages for our attention .There are ads that we see on the side of the bus we catch to work, for example. And what about the logos (商标) we see on the clothing of the people we walk past in the streets?

Most of the time, we are probably not even aware of (意识到的) these less obvious advertising methods, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t work. Take ‘product placement’, for example. You are in a cinema, watching the latest Hollywood movie. Look carefully at the make of car your favorite actor is driving. And what about his watch? Can you see what brand it is? Chances are, you can, and the company that owns the brand is likely to have paid thousands for it to appear in the film.

So, whether Space Marketing finally succeeds in sending ads into space or not is perhaps less important than it might seem. This would not change a thing. Our everyday lives are already strongly influenced by advertising whether we realize it or not.

21. What happened to the plan of sending an ad into space?

A. It came to nothing.

B. It was a dream come true.

C. It had to wait a few years before it was carried out.

D. It was supported by the advertising standards agencies.

22. How does the author explain the “other world” of advertising messages?

A. By showing research findings

B. By explaining research findings

C. By giving instructions

D. By using examples

23. As a form of advertising , product placement       .

A. costs a little

B. doesn’t work

C. is less obvious than TV ads

D. mainly appears in Hollywood movies

24. What does the author suggest at the end of the text

A. We live in a world of advertising.

B. We’ve changed a lot because of advertising.

C. Space Marketing leads in the advertising industry.

D. Space ads will mark the beginning of a new world.

.  ________ others whenever you can and you will make the world a nicer place to live in.

Today is National BiketoWork Day. And on New York City's jammed streets, people are cycling on hundreds of miles of new bike lanes. But New York's widespread efforts to make streets safer for bikes have also left some locals complaining about the loss of parking spots and lanes for cars.

When the weather is good, Aaron Naparstek likes to pedal (用踏板踩) his two young kids to school on a special Dutchmade bicycle. Naparstek supports the new lane.

Aaron: The bike lane on Prospect Park West is really introducing a lot of new people to the idea that it's possible to use a bike in New York City for transportation or to travel around. This is what 21st century New York City looks like.

Prospect Park West is still a oneway road, but where it used to have three lanes of car traffic, now it has two, plus a protected bike lane. Supporters say that makes the road safer for everyone, including pedestrians, by slowing down cars and taking bikes off the sidewalk. But some longtime residents disagree. Lois Carswell is president of a group called Seniors for Safety. She says the twoway bike lane is dangerous to older residents who are used to oneway traffic.

Lois: We wanted a lane—the right kind of lane that would keep everybody safe, that would keep the bikers safe. But we want it to be done the right way. And it has not been done the right way.

Craig Palmer builds bars and restaurants in Manhattan. I was interviewing him for a different story when he brought up the bike lanes all on his own.

Craig: I think the biggest problem is that Bloomberg put all these bike lanes in. You took what used to be a full street and you're shrinking it.

Then there are the Hasidic Jews in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, who forced the city to remove a bike lane through their neighborhood. But polls show that the majority of New Yorkers support bike lanes by a margin of 56% to 39%. Bicycle advocate Caroline Samponaro of Transportation Alternatives calls that a_mandate.

Caroline: If this was an election, we would have already had our victory. The public has spoken and they keep speaking. And I think, more importantly, the public is starting to vote with their pedals.

32What does Aaron mean by saying “This is what 21st century New York City looks like.”

AThere are hundreds of miles of new bike lanes in 21st century New York City.

BDrivers slow down their cars and bikes are taken off the sidewalk in New York.

CBikes are used as a means of transport in 21st century New York City.

DIt's possible to make the streets safe for pedestrians in New York.

BThe twoway bike lane is dangerous to older residents.

CWe took what used to be a full street so the road is broader than before.

DThe removal of one bike lane through a neighbourhood in Brooklyn was not supported by the majority of New Yorkers.

Homework is a major part of going to school: It's your teachers' way of evaluating(评价)how much you understand of what's going on in class. 36     Luckily, you can do a few things to make homework less work.

Be sure you understand the homework.

Write your homework down in your notebook or day planner if you need to.37     It's much easier to take a minute to ask the teacher during or after class than to struggle to remember later that night!

Use any extra time in school.

Many schools have study halls that are specifically designed to allow students to study. It's tempting(诱惑)to hang out with friends during study periods or unstructured(松散的) time.      38_____

Take a break.

39        So take some breaks while doing your homework. Sitting for too long without stretching or relaxing will make you less productive than if you stop every so often. Taking a 15minute break every hour is a

good idea for most people.

40

If you don't finish your homework during school, think about how much you have left and what else is going on that day, and then budget your time. Most high school students have between 1 and 3 hours of homework a night. If it's a heavy homework day and it seems like you've got an assignment in every subject but gym and lunch, you'll need to devote more time to homework. It's a good idea to come up with some kind of homework schedule, especially if you are involved in sports or activities or have an afterschool job.

APace yourself.

BSettle down to do homework.

CAnd it helps digest important concepts(概念).

DMost people's attention spans(注意力持续时间)aren't very long.

EDon't be afraid to ask questions about what's expected.

FOnce your homework is done, you can check over it if you have extra time.

GBut the more work you can get done in school, the less you'll have to do that night.

Our little boy came up to his mother in the kitchen one evening while she was fixing supper, and handed her a piece of paper that he had been writing on. After his mom dried her hands on an apron, she read it, and this is what it said:

For cutting the grass 5.00

For cleaning up my room this week 1.00

For going to the store for you 0.50

Baby-sitting my kid brother while you went shopping 0.25

Taking out the garbage 1.00

For getting a good report card 5.00

For cleaning up and raking the yard 2.00

Well, Ill tell you, his mother looked at him standing there expectantly, and boy, could I see the memories flashing through her mind. So she picked up the pen, turned over the paper he’d written on, and this is what she wrote:

For the nine months I carried you while you were growing inside me. No Charge.

For all the nights that I’ve sat up with you, doctored and prayed for you. No Charge.

For all the trying times, and all the tears that you’ve caused through the years, there’s No Charge.

For all the nights that were filled with dread, and for the worries I knew were ahead, No Charge.

For the toys, food, clothes, and even wiping your nose, there’s No Charge, Son.

When you _____________, the cost of my love is No Charge.

Well, friends, when our son finished reading what his mother had written, there were great big tears in his eyes, and he looked straight up at his mother and said: “ Mom, I sure do love you.” And then he took the pen and in great big letters he wrote: “PAID IN FULL”.

Laughter is a key component of a happy life, and it has powerful physical and mental benefits. No matter what you’re facing, you can learn to laugh and benefit from it.

One of the many benefits of laughter and a sense of humor is that they protect you against the negatives of life. Researches show that people who use humor to fight stress feel less lonely and more positive about themselves.

Although we cant say that a certain number of laughs every day will keep the doctor away, studies show that people who laugh a lot tend to be in good health. And laughter is one of the most commonly used therapies (疗法) among cancer patients.

Laughter could be healthy for your heart, too. Some research shows that when you laugh, there is an increase in oxygen-rich blood flow in your body, possibly due to the release of endorphins (内啡肽), which create a chemical rush that fights negative feelings and stress. Activities that increase endorphins include a good workout and listening to music you love.

Love the benefits of laughter but dont feel like laughing? Sometimes you have to make an effort to laugh. If youre facing tough times, it may help to learn techniques to bring the benefits of laughter into your life. You can try the old recommendations:

Read a funny book, or watch a movie that is funny.

Spend time with an amusing friend.

Look on the light side: Go to places that help you remember good times that have made you laugh in the past.

Or you can join the laughter movement to learn about the benefits of laughter while fighting stress.

Moving can bring out the best and the worst in people, I'm finding. And I've discovered where a very generous spirit lives: Defiance, Ohio.

After suffering through many months of unemployment, my wife and I had to move this week from Colorado to Ohio, where she would work as a sales assistant. Not knowing anyone there, we were pretty concerned about all the work, including how we'd get all things unloaded without killing ourselves.

We decided to pay a couple of college students to help with all the heavy lifting once we got there. But one neighbor after another stopped by and joined in. “What? Have we moved to some other country? Maybe we've died and gone to heaven” I thought.

Unloading actually became fun as we connected with so many wonderful new friends as we worked. The more people that helped, the easier the work became. A job that we were afraid might take days for the two of us alone was finished in a few hours. Many total strangers would either walk by or drive by to ask us if we were moving in. Many were delighted that this fine old house that had sat empty for so long was coming to life again. We were invited to an outdoor meal last night by neighbors on the same street.

All the while, my brain was on this new sense of hope that people could be outgoing and kind to strangers. Among all the conversation were lots of offers to be of help to one another in a variety of ways. It's wonderful to live in such a kind little town.I feel so grateful to be here, and wish the rest of the world could see how an entire society can be a model for what it's like to look out for one another. I used to stay away from friendships with strangers, but now I live in Defiance!

All over the world people enjoy sports. Sports help to keep people healthy, happy and help them to live longer.

36They buy tickets or turn on their TVs to watch the games. Often they get very excited when “their” player or team wins. 37 Football, for example, has spread around the world. Swimming is popular in all countries near the sea or in those with many rivers. What fun it is to jump into a pool or lake, whether in China, Egypt or Italy! 38 Think how many people love to skate or ski in Japan, Norway or Canada.

Some sports or games go back to thousands of years, like running or jumping. Chinese boxing, for example, has a very long history. But basketball and volleyball are rather new. Neither one is a hundred years old yet. 39 Water skiing is one of the newest in the family of sports.

People from different countries may not be able to understand each other, but after a game they often become good friends. 40 One learns to fight hard but fight fair, to win without pride and to lose with grace.

A. And think of people in cold countries.

We get it : You're tired. You're busy. And your shoes are way over there. Excuses are OK sometimes, but not every day - and especially not today. So put on your sneakers, get up off the couch, and let us kick your excuses to the curb(路牙子).

"I ... dislike ... panting(气喘) !"

Being really out of breath may mean you're trying too much too soon, which will kill your confidence. But you don't have to be huffing and puffing to get a workout. Active doesn't have to mean high-intensity(高强度). It's just about moving.

"I hate exercise."

It may seem unbearable, but you just have to get started. Exercise releases(释放) endophins(your brain's own feel-good chemicals), which can be habit-forming. What's the best exercise? The one you’ll do regularly. So you may hate running. Don't run! Ride your bike or just dance. Even cleaning your room is active. As long as you're moving and getting your blood pumping, it counts. So get creative.

"I don't have time."

You may not have lots of time to. spare when you're busy with schoolwork, but we bet you can find 10 minutes. Bonus: An activity break will send oxygen to your brain, making you super-alert(超级警觉的) and more creative too. Famous thinkers like Aristotle and Steve Jobs liked "walking meetings," and you can follow in their footsteps by moving around while you brainstorm about a tough task or memorize your English vocabulary.

"I never see results!”

Even if you train with the help of a professional, you won't see results right away. But you will feel them almost immediately. Don't focus on how your body looks - focus on how you feel. Keep a journal of when you exercise (or don't ) and how you feel that day:Stressed? Focused? Tired? When you start noticing the amazing effects of exercise, you’ll have no excuses.

I discovered the power of fear when I became stuck to my driveway, as if my feet were crazy—glued to the cement水泥).As much as I tried, I could not move them. The realization that my daughters were playing in Nancy's house, just one-half block away, paralyzed麻痹 my legs, making me unable to move when I neared the end of our driveway. Dense, black smoke was rising from behind the Sycamore Maple trees on the other side of the street and was enveloping three houses, making them barely visible. Nancy's house was one of them.

I tried to call out for my daughters hoping to see them run safely to my arms, but my voice was also stuck - stuck in my throat with no intention of coming out. There I stood, helpless, paralyzed and silenced by fear, unable to protect the two little girls I loved more than even I had realized.

Although trapped in a body that couldn't move or speak, I could still hear. I could hear other mothers anxiously calling their children. I could hear a frightening silence that covered the neighborhood instead of the usual happy voices of children. And, finally, I could hear the alarm of the fire engine. As the alarm announced, "We're on our way," it instantly dissolved the crazy glue that had held my feet to the cement and it unlocked the soundproof box that had silenced my voice. I was free to make sure my daughters were safe.

As I continued down the driveway, two little girls, my two little girls, ran toward me from across the street. They had come home to tell me about the fire in the garage next to Nancy's house. Not only did my feet and voice work now, but my eyes were also in good working order and had no trouble producing tears.
