Is There Life on Earth?

There was great excitement on the planet of Venus(金星) this week. For the first time Venusian scientists managed to land a satellite on the planet Earth, and it has been sending back signals as well as photographs ever since.

The satellite was directed into an area known as Manhattan (named after the great Venusian astronomer Prof. Manhattan, who first discovered it with his telescope 20,000 light years ago).

Because of excellent weather conditions and extremely strong signals, Venusian

scientists were able to get valuable information as to feasibility (可行性) of a manned flying saucer () landing on Earth. A press conference was held at the Venus Institute of Technology.

“We have come to the conclusion, based on last week’s satellite landing,” Prof. Zog said, “that there is no life on Earth.”

“How do you know this?” the science reporter of the Venus Evening Star asked.

“For one thing, Earth’s surface in the area of Manhattan is made up of solid concrete and nothing can grow there. For another, the atmosphere is filled with carbon monoxide (一氧化碳) and other deadly gases and nobody could possibly breathe the air and     survive.”

“What does this mean as far as our flying saucer program is concerned?”

“We shall have to take our own oxygen with us, which means a much heavier flying saucer than originally planned.”

“Are there any other dangers that you discovered in your studies?”

“Take a look at this photo. You see this dark black cloud hovering(盘旋) over the surface of Earth? We call this the Consolidated Edison Belt. We don’t know what it is made of, but it could give us a lot of trouble and we shall have to make further tests before we send a Venus Being there.”

“Over here you will notice what seems to be a river, but the satellite findings indicate it is polluted and the water is unfit to drink. This means we shall have to carry our own water, which will add even greater weight to the saucer.”

“What are those stalagmite(石笋) projections sticking up?”

“They are some of granite formations that give off light at night. Prof. Glom has named them skyscrapers since they seem to be scraping the skies. ”

“If all you say is true, won’t this set back the flying saucer program several years?”

“Yes, but we shall continue as soon as the Grubstart gives us the added funds.”

Prof. Zog, why are we spending billions and billions of zilches to land a flying saucer on Earth when there is no life there?

“Because if we Venusians can learn to breathe in an Earth atmosphere, then we can live anywhere.”

12. According to Prof. Zog, the Venusians will have to take their own oxygen with them when they carry out their flying saucer program because                        .

A. they need it on their way to the planet of earth.

B. the earth’s atmosphere is filled with deadly gases.

C. oxygen is far from enough in the area of Manhattan

D. there is no air on the planet of Earth

13. The” dark black cloud” in the 10th paragraph indicates            .

A. the polluted air hovering over the surface of Earth

B. the mass of tiny drops of water floating above Earth

C. the mass of small things moving through the air

D. the dark clouds gathering before a storm breaks

14. The author wishes to call our attention to the fact that ____.

A. modern man has polluted his environment to such an extent that he may destroy himself if he carries on like this

B. there is no point in spending billions and billions of zilches to land a flying saucer on Earth

C. pollution has become so serious a problem on Earth that even Venusians find life there unbearable.

D. it is difficult, if not altogether impossible, to land a manned flying saucer on Earth.

The Dupont Circle park in Washington DC is a busy, crowded place. Popular restaurants and businesses around the circle attract many city residents and visitors. But few people know about the old streetcar station below the street. Braulio Agnese is the Managing Director of an organization called Dupont Underground. The group wants to change the old station into a place for the arts."We see everything from site-specific art work, which fills the space in different ways, light and sound or appliances. Or it can be used like a traditional gallery. But also as a curved space, it offers a chance for new kinds of performance. DC has quite a few experimental theater groups that would like to work in an unusual space and do different kinds of production.”

The system of tunnels was built in the late 1940s. But the streetcars only ran for a short time. They stopped running in the 1960s. Mr. Agnese says the station could become a symbol of how quickly Washington is changing."Changes in the last five or ten years have been tremendous. The restaurant scene is changing, new development, new opportunities. We think there is an opportunity to create something here that helps the city to move forward."

Dupont Underground is just one example of the trend toward giving a new purpose to unused industrial sites. In New York, builders want to make a forgotten street car garage into a park below the street. And New York already has the popular High Line Park. It was once an old railroad path. The question is -- can Dupont Underground be as successful?

Bill McLeod is Executive Director of Historic DuPont Circle Main Streets. The group helps small businesses in the DuPont Circle area. Mr. McLeod says the underground will fill a need in the area."I think there is definitely need for art space, or event space, in DuPont. And I think that will be the perfect space to activate because it's very large - it's 75 thousand square feet. Very cool, right?"

Another organization tried to open a group of eating places in the space 15 years ago. That food court project failed. Mr. McLeod says the group leading the new effort has a better understanding of the project. He says the group knows it will take a lot of time and money and is successfully seeking financial support. Braulio Agnese and his co-workers hope to open the underground station to the public in the next few months.

It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver’s seat is another matter.

Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense too. It takes the most cool-headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarreling and fighting. A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of good will and calm and becomes so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such behaviors of politeness are by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don’t even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it

However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. Typical examples are the driver who waves to a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may be not able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to.

An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in traffic stream without causing total blockages that give rise to unpleasant feelings. Unfortunately, modern drivers can’t even learn to drive, let alone master good skills. Years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take from all road users. It is time for all of us to take this message to heart

   A. beat back when forced to face rude driving

   B. be able to recognize politeness when he sees it

   C. encourage old ladies to cross the roads whenever they want to

   D. join in traffic stream quickly however other people feel

31. The following statements are right EXCEPT that ______.

   A. some modern drivers are not good at driving

   B. road politeness is good sense as well as good manners

   C. it is also right to have a tiger in the driver’s seat

   D. a friendly driver should nod or wave thanks in answer to an act of politeness

An eight-year-old child heard her parents talking about her little brother. All she knew was that he was very sick and they had no money. Only a very expensive operation could save him now and there was no one to lend them the money. When she heard her daddy say to her tearful mother, “Only a miracle(奇迹) can save him now,” the little girl went to her bedroom and pulled her money from its hiding place and counted it carefully.

She hurried to a drugstore with the money in her hand.

“And what do you want?” asked the salesman. “It’s for my little brother,” the girl answered. “He’s really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle.” “Pardon?” said the salesman.

“My brother Andrew has something bad growing inside his head and my daddy says only a miracle can save him. So how much does a miracle cost?” “We don’t sell a miracle here, child. I’m sorry,” the salesman said with a smile.

“Listen, if it isn’t enough, I can try and get some more. Just tell me how much it costs.”

A well-dressed man heard it and asked, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need?”

“I don’t know,” she answered with her eyes full of tears. “He’s really sick and mum says he needs an operation. But my daddy can’t pay for it, so I have brought all my money.”

“How much do you have?” asked the man. “$ 1.11, but I can try and get some more,” she answered.

“Well, what luck,” smiled the man. “$ 1.11, the price of a miracle for your little brother.”

He took up the girl’s hand and said, “Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother and meet your parents. Let’s see if I have the kind of miracle you need.”

That well-dressed man was Dr. Carlton Armstrong, a famous doctor. The operation was successful and it wasn’t long before Andrew was home again.

Fannie Cratty wasn’t really my aunt. I only referred to her as “My Aunt Fannie” because the name always made my father laugh and gave my mother cause to look angrily at both of us---at me for being disrespectful of my elder and at my father for encouraging my bad behavior.

As a young woman, my mother had worked in the kitchen of a large Victorian farmhouse owned by Fannie Cratty. During those years my mother helped Aunt Fannie make the best blueberry jam(蓝莓酱) ever tasted by anyone in Glenfield. Aunt Fannie was well known for her jam and for never sharing the recipe with another living soul. Even though my mother knew the recipe by heart, as long as Aunt Fannie was alive (and she lived to be ninety-six!), she never made the jam without Ms. Cratty in our kitchen to direct the process and preserve the secret.

Each August, when blueberry season would roll around, my mother would prepare me for Aunt Fannie’s visit. It was vital that I should be on my best behavior. After all, the woman was old, wealthy, very strict with children. Whenever she was at the house, I didn’t need to be reminded to guard my thoughts and watch my tongue.

One year, after I had been particularly helpful with the jam process, Aunt Fannie gave me a quarter(25分硬币) and then made me promise that I would never spend it. “Hold onto this quarter,” she said, “and someday you will be rich. I still have my very first quarter, given to me by my grandfather.” It had obviously worked for her. So, I kept the 1938-quarter into a small box, put it in my dresser drawer, and waited to become rich.

I now have the blueberry jam recipe and the quarter from Aunt Fannie. In people’s eye Aunt Fannie’s success was due to that secret recipe. But to me, it was just a common recipe. Neither has significantly contributed to my wealth, but I keep them as reminders to hold onto the valuable things in life. Money can make you feel rich for a while, but it is the relationships and the memories of time spent with friends and family that truly leave you wealthy. And that is a fortune that anyone can build.

A. used to forget the secret blueberry jam recipe

B. wanted to show off her excellent cooking skills

C. was unable to make the jam without Aunt Fannie’s direction

D. tried to convince Aunt Fannie that she would keep the secret

We high school students do have some growing pains,     61    we can get rid of them correctly and wisely. First, some of us are upset about their body styles and looks. Travel Tips from the Budget Traveler

Plan in advance.

Passengers planning to travel by plane or train should buy their tickets at least one week before the trip. You can save money that way. There are often special airfares and rail fares if you buy your ticket more than 7 days or 14 days in advance.

Shop around.

Not all travel agencies or airlines change the same amount of money for airline tickets to the same place. Its a good idea to call several different places to get the best deal. Sometimes you can find really good flight prices on the Internet.

Stay over a Saturday night.

Some airlines offer low airfares if you stay over a Saturday night. This is because they want to attract the pleasure travelers. Pleasure travelers are usually able to stay over on a Saturday night. Business travelers usually want to be home with their families on Saturday nights.

Take a boat.

For some destinations, traveling by plane is not the only choice available. Most people travel from Japan to Korea or China, for example, by plane. This is because plane travel is quick and convenient. But you can make the journey by boat, instead. It takes more time, of course, but there are usually cheap deals for boat passengersand you have lots of time to enjoy the journey.

Travel with a friend or in a group.

Traveling in a group is often a good way to save money. If you travel in a group of 10 or more, you can usually get a good deal from airlines. Also, when you rent a car, you can share the cost instead of paying for it yourself. In addition, sharing with another traveler can help get a cheap room price at a hotel.

Join a Frequent Travel Program.

Many airlines offer special programs for regular travelers. These are called Frequent Travel Programs or Frequent Flyer Programs. Every time you take their plane, you get points. When you have enough points, you can get free flights from the airline.

“Sorry, but I don’t agree with you…” This is usually followed by unbearable silence and angry tears. I’ve always found it difficult to disagree with someone because I don’t want to lose a friend. I’ve found it even harder to accept it when someone disagrees with me, because my ego (自尊心) is hurt.

Before the other person gets a chance to explain why she disagrees with me, my usual response would be, “If you aren’t able to see my point of view, then what you think isn’t worth my time or consideration, either.” But now I’ve come to realize that when a friend disagrees with me, sometimes she is simply saying, “I don’t agree with the way things are done.” She still respects me as a person, and is only pointing out a better way to look at a matter. However, there may be times when my friend disagrees with me because I’m against the truth. That’s when I need to listen to what she says.

I’ve learned that for me one way to help my friend is to be open and honest with the other to voice my thoughts and listen to the other carefully. While we can’t control how a person will respond to our views, we must learn to disagree with our friends in love. We will never feel that we are better than the other person. And that will help us to be less emotional, and more objective in the way we express our opinions. In the same way, we can also stay open to feedback (反馈) from others, knowing that our friends may be correcting us in love.

Good friendships build each other up, sometimes through disagreements and honest opinions. Though I don’t like being disagreed with, I’m starting to see the value of such disagreements.

28. The author has found it difficult to disagree with someone because _______.

   A. he is against the truth             B. he doesn’t tell the truth

   C. he is respected by the friend        D. he does things in the wrong way

31. What does the author mainly talk about in the text?

   A. How to keep friendship.

   B. How to avoid hurting a friend.

   C. How to express disagreements.

   D. How to deal with disagreements.

Can you resist cream cakes? I miss my sugar! I’ve decided to lose weight and I had to give up cakes. It’s difficult because I have a sweet tooth and I love cream cakes.

Not having treats can be good for your health. I’ve heard that the Burts, a family of five in South East Englandlived sugar free for a whole year after they found out their daughter had diabetes (糖尿病).It wasn’t easy. To avoid temptation, I don’t go to any bakeries, but this family actually owns one, which makes up to 3,000 cakes a week.

They were in shock when the doctor said that their 16-year-old Lucy had to check her blood sugar levels regularly and take insulin (胰岛素). He advised her to eat a normal, balanced diet, but the Burts went further and got rid of sugar altogether.

And how does it feel to live without sugar for a while? Jason Burt said that for a month they felt weak. But later on it all changed. He says he feels “more awake” and full of energy.

And what about the Burt family business? It had to keep using half a ton of sugar a week and any cook worth his salt knows that you have to taste a recipe to know if it’s right. No problem there, says Jason Burt’s wife, Clare. She points out that she’s got lots of people offering to taste the cakes for them. The family is also thinking about selling more delicious products.

I wonder what makes us have a strong desire for sweet food. Anyway, I’ve decided to forget about the sweet taste of sugar for a while. As British model Kate Moss says“Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.”

A. They were shocked.   B. They went too far about it.

C. They used half a ton of sugar a week.  D. They avoided sugar completely.

23. From the passage we can learn it is necessary for a cook _____.

A. to make up to 3,000 cakes a week

B. to taste a recipe to know if it’s right

C. to get lots of people offering to taste the cakes

D. to selling more delicious products

24. What does the sentence by Kate Moss mean?

A. It is worthwhile to resist food to look skinny.

B. There is nothing tasting as good as sweets.

Good luck and best wishes

There is a cry of rage, and a tennis racket crashes to the ground. Jake, age 7,has just lost another match and is now in tears beside the court. His sister Sally, just one year older, looks at her mother and rolls her eyes: it is hard to enjoy winning when this keeps happening. It is not an unusual situation, and it is one reason why many people argue that competition is bad for children. However, the truth is that competitive games are a valuable preparation for adult life.

Games with winners and losers give children the chance to experience life’s ups and downs .Take Jake, for example.Even though he is unhappy now, he will probably be smiling and laughing with his sister in a few minutes, just like the last time this happened . Gradually, he will learn that the world does not end when you lose a game. Eventually, he may even be able to lose with a smile on his face. This is an important lesson. Not everything in life goes the way you would like, and it is important to know how to handle disappointment t when it occurs.

Children who participate in competitive games develop qualities that allow them to succeed in the complex world of adult life. For example, one of the missions of the Youth Olympic Games is to inspire young people to adopt the Olympic values, which include striving,

Determination and optimism. Competition creates a desire to do better. Children have to learn to succeed in a competitive atmosphere in order to take advantage of opportunities in the future .Although it is possible to win by chance occasionally, people who win and keep winning work very hard to achieve their success.

On the negative side, there are those who will say that competition actually encourages some values , which does happen . It is common to see sports competition in which the desire to win has replaced the desire to have fun. You may even see very young children playing violently----like the superstars they see on TV. While the bad behavior of young athletes is troubling, the problem is not the competition itself. In reality, the blame lies with the professional players who are bad role models for these children. In fact, a recent study of young athletes by the school of Physical Health Education at the University of Wyoming showed an improvement in mood after exercise, athletes were less depressed or tense.

Of course, there are parents who argue that children of Jake’s age are too young to handle the pain of losing. But whether we like it or not, adult life is very competitive , and keeping children away from competition does them more harm than good. If children do not learn how to compete, they will be defeated by people who can. It is an unfortunate fact of life: whether ten or a hundred people want the same job, there can be only one winner .Wouldn’t you want your child to be that person?

69.   Competitive games prepare children for their adult life by_______

A. enabling them to know to handle life’s ups and downs

B. allowing them to succeed in the complex world of adult life

C. Ending their feeling about the world when they lose

D. Helping them to smile even when they are disappointed

71. The example of the Youth Olympics is meant to illustrate that_______

A. Competitions develop children’s qualities to succeed in their future life

B. the Olympic Values should be promoted among young people

C. Taking advantages of future opportunities makes one desire to do better

D. Only by working hard to keep winning can one achieve true success

72. Which really counts in sports competitions according to Paragraph 4?

A. The desire to win

B. The desire to have fun

C. Good role models

D. An improvement in mood

73. The author suggests to the parents that_______

A. They should learn how to handle pain of losing

B. Children should know earlier the competitive adult life

C. They shouldn’t keep children away from competition

D. They should encourage their children to get the job
