I came to study in the United States a year ago. Yet I did not know the real American society until I was injured in a car accident because after the accident I had to see a doctor and go to court(法庭).

After the accident my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very grateful and determined to repay him one day. But the next day, he asked me to pay him $200 for what he had done. I was astonished. He had good reason to charge me, he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsible for my injury, I’d have to have a good lawyer. And only a good doctor can help me get a good lawyer. Now that he had helped me find a good doctor, it was only fair that I should pay him. But every day I went to see the doctor, I had to wait about 50 minutes. He would see two or three patients at the same time, and often stop treating one so as to see another. Yet he charged me $115 each time .The final examination report consisted of ten lines, and it cost me $215.

My lawyer was all smiles the first time we met. But after that he avoided seeing me at all. He knew very well the other party was responsible for the accident, yet he hardly did anything. He simply waited to collect his money. He was so irresponsible(不负责任的) that I decided to dismiss(解雇) him. And he made me pay him $770. Now I had to act as my own lawyer. Due to(由于) my inexperience(缺乏经验,不成熟), I told the insurance(保险)company the date I was leaving America. Knowing that, they played for time…and I left without getting a cent.

There is a problem discussed by people about whether parents should hit their children? Or should they ever beat them?

Research suggests many of us are likely to respond “no”, and public support for spanking(打屁股)has been falling over the years. But surveys also show that 75 percent to nearly 90 percent of parents admit to spanking their child at least once.

I was raised in a zero-tolerance home for disrespect, and my parents often turned to physical punishment. And, no, I don’t feel I was damaged by it.

Nothing is more annoying than watching ill-mannered behavior from children.

But there is data to suggest that a return to old-school spanking isn't the answer.

Two years ago, Newsweek reported that it had found data suggesting that teens whose parents used physical punishment were more likely to become aggressive.

Murray Straus, professor at the University of New Hampshire in America, has studied the topic of children and spanking for decades. He said that children who were physically punished have lower IQs than their peers. It may be that children with lower IQs were more likely to get spanked, but the punishment may have been counterproductive(反作用的)to their mental development, as well.

Some researchers make the argument that occasional open-handed smacks(用巴掌打)on the bottom are not only harmless but can have some benefit.

Last year, Marjorie Gunnoe, a psychologist at Calvin College, studied teens who have never been spanked. There are a greater number of children growing up without ever having been physically punished. Gunnoe’s research suggests they don’t turn out any better than those who were sometimes spanked.

There are some parents who simply cannot control their tempers(脾气). But I still believe that the best parents are the ones who are able to offer fair and firm discipline(纪律,约束) without ever turning to physical punishment.

25. According to the first three paragraphs, the author was probably hit by her parents when __________.

A. parents should determine whether a child needs to be smacked or not

B. children who have been spanked tend to behave better than those who haven't

C. physical punishment should be the last resort(手段)of any parent

D. good parents discipline their children in a fair and reasonable way

Advertisements(广告)are seen everywhere in our daily life.

The word advertising refers to any kind of public announcement that brings products and services to the attention of people. Throughout history, advertising has been an effective way to promote (促进) the trading and selling of goods. In the Middle Ages, merchants employed town criers to read the public messages aloud to promote their goods. When printing was invented in the fifteenth century, pages of advertisements (ads) could be printed easily and were either hung in public places or put in books.

By the end of the seventeenth century, when newspapers were beginning to be read by more people, printed materials became an important way to promote products and services. The London Gazette was the first newspaper to set aside a place just for advertising. This was so successful that by the end of the century several companies started businesses for the purpose of making newspaper ads for merchants.

Advertising spread quickly throughout the eighteenth century. Ad writers were starting to pay more attention to the design of the ad text. Everything, from clothes to drinks, was promoted with clever methods such as reception of the firm's name or product words organized in eye-catching patterns, the use of pretty pictures and expressions easy to remember.

Near the end of the nineteenth century, companies that were devoted to the production of ads came to be known as "advertising agencies (广告商)." The agencies developed new ways to get people to think of themselves as members of a group. Throughout the twentieth century, advertising agencies promoted consumerism (消费主义) as a way of lifespreading the belief that people could be happy only if they bought the "right" products.

Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.

When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings. Sometimes she said I was thin. Sometimes she said I was lazy. Other times she said I wasn’t a good student. And still other times she said I talked too much, and so on. I tried to put up with her.

At last, I became very angry with her. With tears in my eyes, I ran to my father, who listened to me quietly and asked, “Are the things she said true or false? Mary, haven’t you ever wondered what you’re really like? Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that agree with her comments. Pay no attention to the things she said that don’t concern you.”

I did as he told me. Much to my surprise, I discovered that over half the things were true.

I brought the list back to my dad. He refused to take it. “That’s just for you,” he said. “You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. When something said about you is true, you’ll find it will be helpful to you. Don’t shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you think is right.”

At the end of the year, our magazine is revealing our annual food and shopping predictions based on our research.

Grazing Golden-Agers:

Ninety-one percent of people say they snack daily, according to Nielsen. While snacking is on the rise among all ages and genders, research shows that snacking among consumers over the age of 65 could contribute to additional years with a higher quality of life. We'll see more boomers – those raised in the "three square meals a day" period – employ a "grazing" approach to eating foods rich in nutrients like protein, fiber and Omega3 that can help promote bone health.

Same-Day Delivery Not Just for City Clickers:

Online grocery shopping and delivery has become a crowded space, with a host of services competing for consumer attention. This trend allows everyone who sells food to be in the same-day delivery business without having to add additional operational facilities. Look for Google Shopping Express to put every supermarket in the same day delivery business and change consumer behavior to shop online for food to be delivered to homes fresh for each meal.  You now can throw your refrigerator away!

The Rise of Fermented Foods:

The next year will be the year when fermented(发酵的) foods – foods like yogurt, pickles(泡菜) take center stage. These foods contain live cultures, or are preserved in liquid so their sugars and other seasonings can become bacteria-promoting agents. In fact, a survey has found that nearly 50 percent of Americans have shown interest in fermented foods, who, especially those over 60s, have improved a lot in digestion.  However, if treated inappropriately, the bacteria hidden in these foods might have our hospitals full of sick diners.  Therefore make sure to study the cooking skills well before you hug these foods.

Supermarkets change into Socializing Spaces:

Supermarkets have evolved from straightforward centers where consumers could buy groceries to providers of lifestyle. Supermarkets are developing a variety of services that help to establish each outlet as a showcase of lifestyle trends. A desire to be "all things food" to their customers, young and old, is positioning the supermarkets as head to head competitors with chain and local restaurants. Cooking classes and online home-made recipes are also giving consumers reasons beyond a grocery list to step inside their neighborhood supermarkets instead of a local restaurant.

70. The passage advises readers to give up refrigerator because ______.

      A. people eat more snacks which don’t have to be put in refrigerators

      B. the refrigerator has become useless operational facilities for food sellers

      C. food can be sent to customers within short time and freezing is not needed

      D. Fermented foods can be kept in normal temperature for much more time

71. For fermented foods, people must guarantee that ______.

      A. live cultures should be introduced while eating them

      B. these help in digestion should be introduced to the public

      C. bacteria should be killed before being put into the foods.

      D. cooking should be conducted carefully to avoid disease

72. The two trends that are particularly good for the elderly are ______.

      A. eating snacks and fermented foods

      B. eating snacks and one-day delivery

      C. one-day delivery and socializing supermarkets

      D. fermented foods and socializing supermarkets

Like many new graduates, I left university full of hope for the future but with no real idea of what I wanted to do. My degree, with honors, in English literature had not really prepared me for anything practical. I knew I wanted to make a difference in the world somehow, but I had no idea how to do that. That’s when I learned about the Lighthouse Project.

I started my journey as a Lighthouse Project volunteer by reading as much as I could about the experiences of previous volunteers. I knew it would be a lot of hard work, and that I would be away from my family and friends for a very long time. In short, I did not take my decision to apply for the Lighthouse Project lightly. Neither did my family.

Eventually, however, I won the support of my family, and I sent in all the paperwork needed for the application. After countless interviews and presentations, I managed to stand out among the candidates and survive the test alone. Several months later, I finally received a call asking me to report for the duty. I would be going to a small village near Abuja, Nigeria. Where? What? Nigeria? I had no idea. But I was about to find out.

After completing my training, I was sent to the village that was small and desperately in need of proper accommodation. Though the local villagers were poor, they offered their homes, hearts, and food as if I were their own family. I was asked to lead a small team of local people in building a new schoolhouse. For the next year or so, I taught in that same schoolhouse. But I sometimes think I learned more from my students than they did from me.

Sometime during that period, I realized that all those things that had seemed so strange or unusual to me no longer did, though I did not get anywhere with the local language, and returned to the United States a different man. The Lighthouse Project had changed my life forever.

A. discussed his decision with his family

B. asked previous volunteers about voluntary work

C. attended special training to perform difficult tasks

D. felt sad about having to leave his family and friends

31. On arrival at the village, the author was _______.

A. asked to lead a farming team

B. sent to teach in a schoolhouse

C. received warmly by local villagers

D. arranged to live in a separate house

After a confirmed rabies(狂犬病) case in Parke County, Indiana, experts are urging caution if you find a bat(蝙蝠) in your home or office.

“If you try to kill a bat, you are more likely to get bitten,” said Joy O’Keefe, assistant professor of biology and director of Indiana State University’s Centre for Bat Research, Outreach and Conservation. “Most bats people find in their houses are healthy and are not going to bite them and give them rabies.” But they could be a federally endangered species, such as the Indiana Bat, which is found in this area.

So if you spot a bat in your home or office, don’t kill it or touch it with bare hands, O’Keefe said. Instead, put on a pair of heavy gloves and gently move it into a box or bucket. Once contained, the bat can be removed outside.

“If it’s a healthy bat, it’ll fly away eventually,” O’Keefe said. “If it doesn’t move or seem to be healthy, you can take it to the health department to be tested.”

This is the time of year when bats move from their summer resting sites to their winter resting sites, O’Keefe said.

“We get calls every year during the first month of school year from people finding bats in the university’s buildings,” said O’Keefe.

Bats are a great help to people, as every night they can eat up to their entire body weight of insects. Bats, however, are facing great threats from epidemics(流行性疾病), habitat destruction and other things.

“The best way the average person can help bats is by understanding them and by telling other people how awesome bats are and what bats do for us,” O’ Keefe said. “Hopefully, it will make people think that if there’s a bat in their house, they should try to get it out but not kill it. That would be really positive for bats—to not have people be one of their major threats.”

24. According to the text, experts are giving the public a warning about _______.

   A. the biting by bats                                B. the danger of keeping bats

   C. the spreading of an infectious disease        D. the extinction of an endangered species

25. In O’Keefe’s opinion, when you find a bat in your house, you should _______.

   A. put it on a tree                                  B. send it to get tested

   C. remove it with gloves                         D. report to the health department

26. We can infer that the text is probably written in _______.

   A. spring            B. summer               C. autumn               D. winter

27. The underlined word “it” in the last paragraph probably means _______.

The child of today owes much of its pleasant school life to the work of Maria Montessori and others who felt as she did.

Maria Montessori was born in 1870 in northern Italy. Both her parents were well educated.

While Maria was a student, she took great interest in the study of the particular nature of the child's mind. It came to her that small children should have freedom to learn.

Maria became a doctor and a professor at Rome University. In 1907, after working with backward students, she was given a chance to try out her ideas on children. There were sixty children, aged three to six, in the Children's House. The rooms were bright and colorful.
