I stared at him,  59  that his analysis and strategy were correct. I had worked my head  60   , as I had never done before.

I was speechless when my course grade arrived: A-plus. It was the only A-plus given. The next year I received my scholarship. I’ve always remembered Professor Jayne’s lesson: you alone must set your own standard of excellence.

It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver’s seat is another matter altogether.

Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense too. It takes the most cool-headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarreling and fighting. A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of good will and calm so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such behaviors of politeness are by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don’t even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.

However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. Typical examples are the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may be not able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to. It always amazes me that the highways are not covered with the dead bodies of these grannies.

An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in traffic stream without causing total blockages that give rise to unpleasant feelings. Unfortunately, modern drivers can’t even learn to drive, let alone master the roadman ship. Years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.

Surprisinglyno one knows how many children receive education in English hospitalsstill less the content or quality of that education.Proper records are just   not kept.We know that more than 850,000 children go through hospital each yearand that every child of school age has a legal right to continue to receive  education while in hospital. We also know there is only one hospital teacher to every 1,000 children in hospital.

Little wonder the latest survey concludes that the extent and type of hospital teaching available differ a great deal across the country. It is found that half the hospitals in England which admit children have no teacher.A further quarter have only a parttime teacher. The special children’s hospitals in major cities do bestgeneral hospitals in the country and holiday areas are worst off. From this surveyone can estimate that fewer than one in five children have some contact with a hospital teacher—and that contact may be as little as two hours a day. Most children interviewed were surprised to find a teacher in hospital at all. They had not been prepared for it by parents or their own school. If there was a teacher they were much more likely to read books and do math or number workwithout a teacher they would only play games.

Reasons for hospital teaching range from preventing a child falling behind and   maintaining the habit of school to keeping a child occupiedand the latter is of ten all the teacher can do.The position and influence of many teachers was summed up when parents referred to them as “the library lady” or just “the helper”Children tend to rely on concerned school friends to keep in touch with school work.Several parents spoke of requests for work being ignored or refused by the school.Once back at school children rarely get extra teachingand are told to catch up as best as they can.

Many shortstay childpatients catch up quickly. But schools do very little to ease the anxiety about falling behind expressed by many of the children interviewed.

43The author points out at the beginning that________.

Aevery child in hospital receives some teaching

Bnot enough is known about hospital teaching

Dthe special children’s hospitals are worst off

44It can be inferred from the latest survey that________.

Donly onefourth of the hospitals have fulltime teachers

45Children in hospital usually turn to________in order to catch up with their school work.

Ahospital teachers    Bschoolmates    Cparents           Dschool teachers

46We can conclude from the passage that the author is________.

Aunfavorable towards children receiving education in hospitals

Bin favor of the present state of teaching in hospitals

Cunsatisfied with the present state of hospital teaching

Dsatisfied with the results of the latest survey
