She got separated from her husband, because she couldn’t _____ his bad temper.

Do not let any failures discourage you, for you can never tell ________ close you may be to victory.

   A. how            B. that           C. which               D. where

Does this situation seem familiar to you? Your English is progressing well, the grammar is now familiar; the reading comprehension is no problem, and you are speaking quite fluently. 36

First of all, remember that you are not alone. Listening is probably the most difficult job for almost all learners of  English as a foreign language. The most important thing is to listen as often as possible. 37 The Internet is really a useful tool for English students, You can download The Real player from Real Media. com. The Real Player allows you to use the Internet like a radio station.

Once you have begun to listen on a regular basis, you might still be frustrated(受阻)by limited understanding. 38  Here is some of the advice I give my students

▲Accept the fact that you are not going to understand everything.

▲Stay relaxed when you do not understand, and try listening to the material for more times.

▲Do not translate everything into your native language.

39   Don't concentrate on details before you have understood the main ideas.

▲Listen to some thing you enjoy.

I remember the problems I had in understanding spoken German when I first wont to Germany. In the beginningwhen I didn't understand a word, I insisted on translating it in my mind. This method usually resulted in confusion.  40   Firstly, translating creates a barrier between the listener and the speaker. Secondly, most people repeat themselves constantly. By remaining calm, I noticed that even if I didn't t pay much attention I could usually understand what the speaker had said.

A. But you can' t follow a native English speaker at all!

B. What should you do?

C. But listening is a problem for most of the beginners?

D. However, after several weeks, I got used to the new environment in Germany.

E. So, what you need to do is to find listening resources.

F. Then, after the first six months, I discovered two extremely important facts.

G. Listen for the general idea of the conversation.

There was a(n)________silence in the live interviewwhen on one knew what to say to the

    audience.

Aashamed    Bdisappointed    Cdesperate    Dawkward

Dear Mom and Dad,

The annual college entrance examination is around the corner. On this special occasion, how I wish I could have a heart-to-heart talk with you.

___________________________________________________________________________

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua

I was lucky enough to have a chance to study in the United States as an international student from the Ukraine when I was fourteen years old. I went to a wonderful school,West Catholic High School, for my freshman year.

I remember my first day at that school as if it were yesterday. I was very nervous, and I could feel my heartbeat on the tips of my toes. My main fear was that I would not be able to express myself due to the language barrier. I was trying to have as little communication as I possibly could. And I almost succeeded, until we had to introduce ourselves in front of the class.

And the moment the word “international”flew out of my mouth, i was surrounded by thirty people who were asking questions one after another. I remember some of the questions were “Where is the Ukraine? Is it a kingdom?”“Do you have McDonald’s? Does it taste the same?”and “Say something in your language.” It turned out to be the opposite of less communication, but it was so much fun.

During the first three months, I certainly experienced a bit of cultural shock. I think Americans are the nicest people I have ever met in my entire life. They always smile and say, “Hi, how are you?”

One day, I noticed the students looking at me suspiciously. Finally , my classmate came up to my locker and whispered, “Is that true that you are a princess(公主)and that you came to study here so that nobody would recognize you?” At one point, I even had an image of myself wearing a gown and waving at the crowd. What ? People do have a wild imagination!

During my study abroad experience, I saw a totally new world, experienced great culture, met a lot of incredible(不可思议的)people and improved my language. This trip inspired me to learn foreign languages. That is one of the reasons why I speak five different languages today.

Have you ever wondered why birds sing? Maybe you thought that they were just happy. After all, you probably sing when you are happy.

Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy. However, they sing most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory.

Do you know what a “territory” is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, claims (声称) as its own. Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same species are welcome. Your house is your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and threaten you, you might shout. Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.

If so, you have actually frightened the stranger away without having to fight him. A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting (筑巢) season. So he is screaming all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not. This screaming is what we call a bird’s song, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away.

32. Some scientists believe that most of the time bird’s singing is actually ________.

A. an expression of happiness                                      B. a way of greeting

C. an expression of anger                                    D. a way of warning

33. What is a bird’s “territory”?

A. An area which a bird considers to be its own.     B. A place where a bird may shout at the top of its voice.

C. An area for which birds fight against each other.  D. A place where families of other species are not accepted.

34. Why do birds keep on singing at nesting season?

A .Because they want to invite more friends.         B. Because their singing helps frighten outsiders away.

C. Because they want to find outsiders around.        D. Because their singing helps get rid of their fears.

35. How does the writer explain birds’ singing?

A. By describing birds’ daily life.                   B. By reporting experiment results.

C. By comparing birds with human beings.              D. By telling a bird’s story.

The little girl _______ to me when she told me that she had ______ the eggs ______ by the hen on the table. They’re nowhere to be seen.

Every country has its heroes. The heroes are the people the nation and especially the young people admire. If you get a list of the heroes of a nation, it will tell you the potential(潜力) of that nation.

Today in America, if you ask the high school students to list their heroes, their choices would probably fall into three groups. The first group of heroes would be the rock stars—the people connected with rock music. There is no doubt that such people do have talent(才能). But one wonders if one should treat rock stars as a model. The rock stars too often are mixed with drugs and their personal life is not all that good. The rock stars are rich and wear the latest fashion styles. However, one should seek more in a hero than such things as money and good clothes.

A second type of hero for the American youth is the sports star. Again you have a person who has a great ability in one area—sports. However, too often the personal life of the sports star is a bit of disorder. Too frequently drugs and drinking are a part of life of the sports star.

A third type of hero is the TV or movie star. This person may have lots of acting talent and is quite handsome. However, the personal life of too many actors is quite sad and they should not be held up as a model of young people. Today, the rock star, the athlete and the actor all have become the models of the youth in America.Really, do you hear a young person say that his hero is a doctor, a teacher or a scientist? These people are not rich and do not wear fashionable clothes. However, they are talented people who work hard to make the world a better place for everyone.

What is really sad is that the young try to imitate their heroes. They like to wear the same clothes and follow their styles. If the heroes of today for the American young people are limited only to rock stars, athletes and actors, the future does not look too bright.

5The last sentence of the first paragraph implies that   .

A.if a nation has a lot of heroes,it will be strong

B.heroes of a nation will make the nation itself

C.what the people admire will make the future of the nation

D.if you want to be a hero, you must admire the hero

6According to the writer, people should admire those   .

A.who are rich and wear the latest fashion clothes                    B.who can express people’s feelings

C.whose personal life is good                                                 D.who work for the interests of the people

7What is the writer’s attitude towards American youth’s admiration?

A.He understands it.                                                       B.He criticizes it.

C.He is angry about it.                                                    D.He is uninterested in it.

The regular use of text messages and e-mails can lower the IQ more than twice as much as smoking marijuana (大麻). That is the statement of researchers who have found that tapping away on a mobile phone or computer keypad or checking for electronic messages temporarily knocks up to 10 points off the user’s IQ. This rate of decline in intelligence compares unfavorably with the four-point drop in IQ associated with smoking marijuana, according to British researchers, who have described the phenomenon of improved stupidity as “infomania”. The research conducted by Hewlett Packard, the technology company, has concluded that it is mainly a problem for adult workers, especially men.

It is concluded that too much use of modern technology can damage a person’s mind. It can cause a constant distraction of “always on” technology when employees should be concentrating on what they are paid to do. Infomania means that they lose concentration as their minds remain fixed in an almost permanent state of readiness to react to technology instead of focusing on the task in hand. The report also added that, in a long term, the brain will be considerably shaped by what we do to it and by the experience of daily life. At a microcellular level, the complex networks of nerve cells that make up parts of the brain actually change in response to certain experiences.

Too much use of modern technology can be damaging not only to a person’s mind, but to their social relationship. 1,100 adults were interviewed during the research. More than 62 per cent of them admitted that they were addicted to checking their e-mails and text messages so often that they scrutinized work-related ones even when at home or on holiday. Half said that they always responded immediately to an email and will even interrupt a meeting to do so. It is concluded that infomania is increasing stress and anxiety and affecting one’s characteristics. Nine out of ten thought that colleagues who answered e-mails or messages during a face-to-face meeting were extremely rude.

The effects on IQ were studied by Dr Glenn Wilson, a psychologist at University of London. “This is a very real and widespread phenomenon,” he said. “We have found that infomania will damage a worker’s performance by reducing their mental sharpness and changing their social life. Companies should encourage a more balanced and appropriate way of working.”

The flag, the most common symbol(象征) of a nation in the modern world,is also one of the most ancient. With a clear symbolic meaning, the flag in the traditional form is still used today to mark buildings, ships and other vehicles related to a country.
      The national flag
(国旗) as we know it today is in no way a primitive(原始的)artifact. It is ,rather, the product of thousands of years' development.Historians(历史学家) believe that it had two major ancestors,of which the earlier served to show wind direction.
Early human beings used very fragile houses and boats.Often strong winds would tear roofs from houses or cause high waves that endangered travelers.People's food supplies were similarly vulnerable.Even after they had learned how to plant grains, they still needed help from nature to ensure good harvests. Therefore they feared and depended on the power of the wind, which could bring warmth from one direction and cold from another.
Using a simple piece of cloth tied to the top of a post to tell the direction of the wind was more dependable than earlier methods, such as watching the rising of smoke from a fire. The connection of the flag with heavenly power was therefore reasonable.Early human societies began to fix long pieces of cloth to the tops of totems(
图腾) before carrying them into battle. They believed that the power of the wind would be added to the good wishes of the gods and ancestors represented by the totems themselves.
These flags developed very slowly into modern flags. The first known flag of a nation or a ruler was unmarked:The king of China around 1000 B.C. was known to have a white flag carried ahead of him. This practice might have been learned from Egyptians even further in the past, but it was from China that it spread over trade routes through India, then across Arab lands, and finally to Europe, where it met up with the other ancestor of the national flag.

  A. impossible to make sure of   B. likely to be protected
  C. easy to damage               D. difficult to find
23.The earliest flags were connected with heavenly power because.
   A. they could tell wind direction   B. they could bring good luck to fighters
   C. they were handed down by the ancestors

   D. they were believed to stand for natural forces
24.What does the author know of the first national flag?
  A. He knows when it was sent to Europe.  B. He believes it was made in Egypt.
  C. He thinks it came from China.          D. He doubts where it started.
25.What will the author most probably talk about next?
  A. The role of China in the spread of the national flag.

  B. The second ancestor of the national flag.
  C. The use of modern flags in Europe.
  D. The importance of modern flags.
