Learning a foreign language can be a difficult task for most people. The degree of difficulty, however, differs from one person to another. Like studying any other subjects, we have to make an effort and put in the time. Besides, an individual’s learning ability can be determined by the following factors:
My husband says I am a quick learner, but I easily forget new information, especially dates and figures. My husband spends more time learning a new subject but seldom forgets what he has learned. We’re exactly the opposite, and we represent the two basic kinds of learners. Some people can learn new information fast, while others have to work a little bit harder at it. Others remember new knowledge longer, like my husband, while others easily forget what they have just learned. How fast and well you learn new things are determined by your genes (基因) and your environment. My mother is a fast learner, while my husband has slow learning parents. The way we learn also differs. I like to write down what I’ve just learned. I also find that drawing diagrams (图表) works better for me. Compared with my husband, I hate memorizing data and definition (定义), for example, the definition of a family. I’d rather write down something like this: family = husband wife children. I remember things better when I can visually picture it in my mind, a mental picture or diagram. Determine your own learning ability by observing the way you learn new information, how fast you can learn it, and how long you can keep this new data. By doing so, you can choose the method best suited to your learning style.
In my opinion, this is the most important factor in learning a foreign language: your drive to learn. As the saying goes, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.” Different people are driven by different motivations (动机). I want to learn a new language because I find it challenging. Others may need to learn a foreign language because of having a new job or working in foreign countries. The point is to determine whether you truly need or just want to learn a foreign language. There’s a difference between the two. The first is a requirement which needs to be done immediately, while the latter can be delayed and will not influence your performance in your job directly.

Driver rushed to open the passenger door for me and made sure I was comfortably seated be-fore he closed the door. As he got in the driver’s seat, he mentioned that the folded Wall Street Journal next to me was for ma use. He then showed me several tapes and asked me what type of music I would enjoy. Well! I looked around for a Candid Camera! Wouldn’t you? I could not believe the service I was receiving! I took the opportunity to say, “Obviously you take great pride in your work. You must have a story to tell.”
“You bet,” he replied,“I used to be in Corporate America. But I got tired of thinking my best would never be good enough. I decided to find my place in life where I could feel proud of being the best I could be. I knew I would never be a rocket scientist, but I love driving cars, being of service and feeling like I have done a full day’s work and done it well. I became a cab driver. One thing I know for sure, to be great in my business I could simply just meet the expectations of my passengers. But, to be great in my business, I have to exceed the customer’s expectations! How to Do Well in Exams
Do not underestimate(低估) the power of revision in the days and hours before an examination. The closer you are to the exam, the more chance you have of storing and retaining(保持)crucial(关键的) information. But do not overdo it. 26 An effective daily routine can help you through an exam period, so in the days leading up to your first exam, get into the habit of being up and ready to work by game. It can be a shock to the system after months of working to your own timetable to be mentally alert at that time if you have not prepared for it.
On the day of the exam, have a good breakfast, pack two of everything you need (pens, pencils, erasers, etc.), then make your way to the examination hall in good time 27 .
Once in your seat, simply pause for a few seconds and collect your thoughts. Close your eyes and take in a few slow, deep breaths to help you relax. When you turn over the test paper, spend a short period reading through all the instructions and questions, paying particular attention to key verbs such as "discuss", "compare" and "evaluate". 28 It is always wise to allow for 10 minutes at the end of the exam to give yourself time to go back over your answers. Once you have selected the questions you wish to tackle, begin by attempting the one you think is your strongest. It will give you more confidence when you see a well-answered question down on paper. Also remember to write clearly, and do not be afraid to express the unexpected: after all, examiners can get very bored marking stereotypical answers.
29 If you do need something else to focus on to help collect your thoughts, choose a fixture in the room, such as the ceiling - or anything else that will not allow you to be distracted.
Finally, once you have finished, never hang around outside afterwards to attend the discussion by other students. 30
A. Do not arrive too early, though, as other people's anxiety can be contagious(有传染性), and you may suffer from undue(多度的) panic.
B. Try not to be tempted to look at those around you, or at the clock.
C. When you get home, read the examination paper through and look up all the words you didn't understand.
D. Sleep, exercise and relaxation are all just as important.
E. Map out a quick plan of points you wish to make and how much time you should spend on each question.
F. Go and have a well-earned rest, then prepare for your next exam.
G. Underestimate the test in your mind.
Throughout history, many great leaders and explorers have tried hard to find objects or other ways to live forever. While it might sound 41 to live forever, I believe that what makes life so 42 is that it doesn’t last forever. So, I don’t 43 that living forever is a good idea.
For one thing, I think living forever would be very 44 . We always have to find ways to 45 ourselves in a normal lifetime. 46 you lived forever, you would still need to eat and have a place to live. To pay for all these things, you would have to 47 working for as long as you lived. Many people work for 30-40 years, then 48 and begin to enjoy the rest of their lives. But you wouldn’t have that 49 if you lived forever. And, since forever is a long time, that means if you didn’t 50 your skill set every few decades(十年),you could be stuck doing the same thing for a very long time. That doesn’t sound like 51 at all!
Furthermore, it would be very 52 to live forever if the people around you didn’t also have that 53 . You’d be likely to 54 a lot of people in different periods of time, but you would also have to 55 them die. No doubt this could be very 56 for you. You would have the 57 to see your children and your grandchildren and your great grandchildren all 58 . But then, you’d also have to watch them get old and pass away. 59 , this could lead to a very lonely existence(存在).
60 , while living forever might be attractive to some people, I don’t think it
would be right for me.

Best wishes!
Yours sincerely,
Last Friday a storm swept through two villages in the New Territories, 71 (destroy) fourteen homes. Seven others were so badly damaged 72 their owners had to leave them, and fifteen others had broken windows or roofs. One person was killed, several were 73 (serious) hurt and taken to hospital, and a number of other people received smaller hurt. Altogether over two hundred people were homeless after the storm.
A farmer, Mr. Tan, said that the storm began early 74 the morning and lasted for over an hour.
“I 75 (eat) with my wife and children,” he said, “when we heard a loud noise. A few minutes later our house fell down on top of us. We tried our best 76 (climb) out but then I saw that one of my children was 77 (miss). I went back inside and found him, safe 78 very frightened.”
Mrs. Woo Mei Fong said that her husband had just left for work when she 79 (feel) that her house was moving. She ran outside at once with her children.
Soldiers helped to take people out of the flooded area and the welfare department brought 80 (they) food, clothes and shelter.
It was Mother’s Day, but our mother was far away from us. I decided to drive to the 41 with my wife and our children to 42 flowers.
After we arrived, we went hiking , played games, and collected all kinds of flowers and so on. How happy we were! Finally, though, we had to 43 our car and got ready to go back home. While the kids chatted and I drove, my wife sat behind me, surrounded by her flowers, a(n) 44 look in her eyes.
Suddenly my wife 45 to me, “Stop the car. Stop right here!” 46 I could ask her what had happened, she was out and 47 up a nearby grassy hill with the lilacs (丁香花)still in her arms. At the 48 of the hill was a nursing home and , because it was such a beautiful spring day, the 49 were outdoors talking with relatives.
My wife went up the hill, where an elderly patient was sitting in her 50 , alone with her back to most of the others. My wife 51 the flowers to her and said something. The patient 52 her head and smiled. They talked for a few 53 before my wife ran back. As the car 54 away, I found in the mirror the woman 55 with the lilacs.
“Mom,” the kids asked, “Who was that? Why did you give her our 56 ? Is she somebody’s mother?” My wife said, “I didn’t know the old woman. But it is Mother’s Day. And she seemed so 57 . Who wouldn’t be cheered by flowers? 58 ,” she added, “I have all of you, and I still have my 59 , even if she is far away. That woman needed those flowers more than I did.”
Now, every May, our own yard is 60 with lilacs. Every Mother’s Day we drive to the countryside to gather flowers and sow more seeds in our yard. And every year I remember that lonely old woman in her wheelchair, and her smile on her face.

Family vacations are a must whenever you have time. As a matter of fact, you never have to spend a lot of money taking a break because this can be done in various ways. 36
To begin with, you can just stay in a place near your house as long as you have the chance to be with your family. You can also have just a simple dinner where your family members can just talk to each other and have fun. 37 In addition, it provides you with relaxation and moments to share with your family. 38 That is because at the end of the day what matters the most is not how much money you have spent, but the quality of time you have given to your family.
You also need to search for new destinations for your family vacation so that you can at least be in a place that you haven’t been to before. 39 This will not only be beneficial to you, but also to your children. Then you can all share your thoughts and views about the new things that you are seeing. You have to focus on your children while you are on vacation, too, because every child needs attention and time.
40 You need to spend some time with your family at least once a week and talk about the things that have happened. This is the best time to connect with your family.
A. You need to talk about the stress at work.
B. Lastly, you should take family vacations on a regular basis.
