Sometimes all a child needs is a little creative involvement from Mom and Dad. Here are some very simple easy-to-use ideas that might help.
School is Important!
51 Consciously learn something new every day and make a game of it with your family. Make homework a family activity and take part in it by checking in and helping out.
Set Realistic Goals
Be reasonable. Don’t expect miracles to happen overnight. 52 Help your child understand what they’re trying to achieve and that there are no short cuts. Improving their grades is a goal worth reaching, not a punishment. 53 This will give them a say in their educational future.
Be an Adviser
Be available for your child. If you’re willing to sit down and help them get through their tough homework, they’ll be more willing, too. Remember that learning is about encounting what you don’t know. That can be scary! 54 Your child will learn more quickly if they can depend on you to help no matter what the problem is.
Know When to Ask for Help
Know when to turn to a tutor (导师), or any of the numerous programmes connected with local schools and libraries. 55 Consider seeking professional help. An tutor should be able to identify problems and give suggestions on how to help a child learn to their full potential.
A. Many children suffer from learning disabilities.
B. Academic progress is a slow but steady process.
C. Allow your child to suggest solutions to the problem.
D. When your child succeeds make sure they are congratulated.
E. Be patient when helping your child master new skills.
F. Talk about how valuable education is and how it can benefit your child’s future.
G. Establishing an environment where learning is fun and important is a great thing to do.

They help us escape the pressures of life and get informations. However, if we spend too much time on them, we won’t have time to contact face to face our friends. And our life, study and work will hurt. In my view, we should limit to our using smart phones except for a purpose of learning. As the beautiful holiday ends, a new semester comes. Most children have a difficult ___37___ making the back-to-school transition. As with any new or ___38___unsettling situation -- like starting school for the first time or entering a new grade or new school -- allow children time to adjust. Remind them that everyone feels a little ___39___ about the first day of school.
Emphasize the ___40___ things about going back to school, such as hanging out with old friends, meeting new classmates, buying cool school supplies and getting involved in sports and other activities. It is also important to talk to children about what worries them and ___41___ comfort: are they afraid they won’t make new friends or get along well with their teachers? Is the thought of schoolwork ___42___ them? Are they worried about the bully from last year?
Consider adjusting your own ___43___ to make the transition smoother. If possible, it is especially beneficial for parents to be home at the end of the school day for the first week. But many working parents just don’t have the free time. Try to arrange your evenings instead so that you can give your children as much time as they need___44___ during those first few days. If your child is starting a new school, ___45____the school the first day to arrange a visit. And ask if your child can be paired up with another student, and if you can be connected with other new parents. This will help both of you with the adjustment to new people and surroundings.

Thank you! God bless you.” I hadn’t expected he would 50 it so much. I walked away feeling 51 . I turned back one last minute and 52 him still smiling. “It was just an umbrella,” I thought, not 53 that it was the 54 that made him happy. He might feel that he wasn’t 55 in the world.

What historical site impresses you most? I’ve always been fascinated by the pyramids in Egypt. A few years ago I braved a long queue and climbed through a narrow passage to reach the main chamber deep inside one of them. Like millions of other tourists, I marveled (赞叹) at stone-walled rooms full of the magic of this ancient civilization.
But popularity might be the destruction of such archaeological treasures. Take Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings for example. It lay untouched for more than 3,000 years until the British archaeologist Howard Carter uncovered it in 1922. Now more than 1,000 people a day walk through it.
But as more and more people visit, the temperature and humidity inside the tomb change. As a result, the beautifully decorated plaster is coming away from the rock.
In order to preserve its heritage, a replica (复制品) of the monument is being opened about 1 kilometer away from the actual burial site. Specialists have recorded every detail of Tutankhamun’s tomb and used the data to recreate it.
Adam Lowe from the organization behind the project says the copy is identical to the original. He believes visitors will want to become part of the force that protects it rather than a force that is leading to its destruction. So they won’t mind seeing a replica.
But for historian Tom Holland, a copy is still a copy. He believes that although preservation is important, there is something unique about places like Tutankhamun’s tomb. He says it was built by people who believed in the world of the spirits, the dead and the supernatural. You don’t have to believe in a god or gods to feel a place is consecrated (使圣化) and has a particular quality that can’t be reproduced.
What about you? Would you visit a replica of a monument rather than the original to help preserve it?
28. What may account for the destruction of some archaeological treasures like Tutankhamun’s tomb?
A. Climate change. B. Copies. C. Popularity. D. Thieves.
29. What measures have been taken to preserve the heritage of Tutankhamun’s tomb?

Summer safety tips for children
Summer is a time for having fun in the sun! Children should be able to have fun but they should also be safe. Here are some helpful tips all parents should discuss with their children.
Never talk to strangers
16If someone suspicious (可疑的) that they don’t know comes up to them, they should immediately either run away if they are alone or go somewhere where there are other people.
Keep cool in the heat
If your children must be outdoors in extreme heat, make sure that activities should be limited to 15 minutes. 17 Remember to ask them to drink some every 20 minutes even if they do not feel thirsty.
Water safety
For children who cannot swim, they should not go into the deep area of the water. And they should also play at places where there are lifeguards. This way if something were to happen, they would have someone there to help them. 18
Bike safety
19 Remember to ask your children to be careful in the street, sidewalk and even the driveway of your home. They need to be taught never to ride a bike out into the street without first looking for cars, and never into the street from behind a parked car, or from in between two parked cars.
20 Children can be easily persuaded into experimenting with drugs and alcohol (酒) at a young age. Summer time gives them more time to stay with their friends who may offer them drugs or alcohol. Remember to tell your children the terrible health effects they have on their body.
A. Learn to read people
B. Stay away from them
C. Riding can be fun but also dangerous.
D. Of course, water is necessary for them.
E. Children should never be in a pool alone, anyway.

Far away, in a forest outside Oslo, Norway, 1,000 newly planted trees are growing. When the trees are full-size, they will be cut down and used to make paper. The paper will be used to make copies of an unusual book. The book will contain 100 stories by 100 authors written over the course of 100 years.
Scottish artist Katie Paterson began the project last year. “We’re asking one writer a year to submit a story,” Paterson said. Subject, style, and length are up to the author, However, it is 100 years later that the stories can be revealed.
What’s the point of asking authors to write stories that readers alive today will never get to enjoy?” The project is a lot about the imagination,” she says. “It’s about thinking about the future and developing an artwork that’s not just for now but for a future generation.”
Paterson got the idea for the project while drawing tree rings in a notebook. Each ring in a tree’s trunk represents one year of growth. That inspired her to create a project that ties the present with the future. The idea seemed so far that she set it aside. But a few years later, Paterson had the opportunity to take part in a program called Slow Space. Organizers were looking for projects designed to unfold over time. Paterson’s was one of three selected.
The first work for the book was completed this year. The manuscript(手稿)is being held at Oslo’s public library, where a special room house the growing collection of stories.
“More and more paper books are phased out,” Paterson says. She notes that Oslo’s library has had thousands of digital books. Hopefully, she says that she expects the future generations will be excited enough to shout, “Look! They’re paper books!”
24. What’s the purpose of the project according to Paterson?
A. Protecting the forest.
B. Setting up a library.
C. Leaving behind some paper books for future generations.
D. Encouraging more authors to create more wonderful works.
25. How did the idea of the project occur to Paterson?
A. Inspired by tree rings.
B. Inspired by the library.
C. Inspired by the ecological environment.
D. Inspired by the program of Slow Space.
26. What’s the proper meaning of the underlined part?
A. Lit up B. Dying out C. Coming to life D. Passed down
27. It can be inferred that______.
A. the stories inside the book will remain secret until 2115

My 17-year-old daughter went off to college and having her away from home brought back memories of watching Peter Pan when she was little. In the classic TV production, one scene in particular impressed me: when Mrs. Darling puts her children into bed. As she turns off the last of the night light, she takes one last look at the bedroom and says, “Dear night lights, protect my sleeping children.” As a mother, I know how much she loves her children.
It has been several weeks since we took our daughter to college and she seems to be adjusting well after a short period of homesickness. For us, though, it’s another story. Like most parents, I love checking in on my children at night. But now she’s gone, and I find night times the hardest. I miss her most at night.
In my neighborhood, most of the parents whose kids are off to college are dealing with similar melancholy. My husband is filled with anxiety. One friend talked about getting this sick feeling in her stomach as she prepared for the college drop-off. We complained that many of us were too busy to truly enjoy being with our children while we had them.
For us moms, seeing Toy Story 3 only made the sadness worse as we watched the character Andy, who is the same age as our kids, say goodbye to his childhood as he prepares to leave for college. And it’s not just “first-time” parents like me. Two moms who have kids already well into college said the separation didn’t get any easier. “You feel like something has been taken away from inside you” said one of them.
I imagine things will get easier with time, especially as I see my daughter adjust to college life. Meanwhile, as I keep my cell phone close to me in bed and text my daughter goodnight and sweet dreams every night, I like to think that messages serve as a night light that keeps her safe.
24.The writer was deeply impressed by the scene in Peter Pan because ________.
A. the scene showed a mother’s deep love for her children
B. the scene was very exciting and interesting
C. the scene taught her and her daughter a good lesson

25.After her daughter went to college, the writer ________.
A. realized she hadn’t done enough for her daughter
B. often cried as she missed her daughter so much
C. didn’t get used to the change for a long time
D. failed to have a good sleep every night
26.What is the underlined word “melancholy” in Paragraph 3 similar in meaning to?
A. Happiness. B. Anger.
C. Excitement. D. Sadness.
27.According to the last paragraph, why did the writer keep her cell phone close to her in bed?
A. To call her daughter any time.
B. To wait for her daughter’s calls.
C. To wait for her daughter’s messages.
D. To say good night to her daughter.

Last week my parents and I took a two-days trip to Emei Mountain in Sichuan. As everyone knows, it’s a famous mountain with all kind of plants and animals. The weather was fine. It was almost noon we arrived at the foot of the mountain. The three of them were very excited. As we climbed the mountain, we fed monkeys, visiting temples and told stories. On the way up I was busy taking picture since the scenery was so beautiful. The time passes quickly. Evening came. We spent the night in a hotel at the top of the mountain. The food was expensive and the service was good. I was very tired that I fell asleep at the moment my head touched the pillow. \
Edward Wilson is America's, if not the world's, leading naturalist. In The Future of Life, he takes us on a tour of the world's natural resources. How are they used? What has been lost? What remains and is it able to continue with the present speed of use? Wilson also points out the need to understand fully the biodiversity(生物多样性)of our earth.
Wilson begins with an open letter to the pioneer in environment protection, Henry David Thoreau. He compares today's Walden Pond with that of Thoreau's day. Wilson will use such comparisons for the rest of the book. The problem is clear: man has done great damage to his home over the years. Can the earth, with human help, be made to return to biodiversity levels that will be able to support us in the future?
Biodiversity, Wilson argues, is the key to settling many problems the earth faces today. Even our agricultural crops can gain advantages from it. A mere hundred species(物种) are the basis of our food supply, of which but twenty carry the load. Wilson suggests changing this situation by looking into ten thousand species that could be made use of, which will be a way to reduce the clearing of the natural homes of plants and animals to enlarge farming areas.
At the end of the book, Wilson discusses the importance of human values in considering the environment. If you are to continue to live on the earth, you may as well read and act on the ideas in this book.
32. We learn from the text that Wilson cares most about .
A. the environment for plants
B. the biodiversity of our earth
C. the waste of natural resources
D. the importance of human values
33. How many species are most important to our present food supply?
A. Twenty B. Eighty C. One hundred D. Ten thousand
34. Wilson suggests that one way to keep biodiversity is to .
A. learn how to farm scientifically
B. builds homes for some dying species
C. makes it clear what to eat
D. use more species for food
35. We can infer that the text is
A. description of natural resources
B. a research report
C. a book review
D. an introduction to a scientist
Hardly can you succeed 61 doing something very well the first time you do it. Therefore, when you do something for the first time, it is time to give up the idea of perfection.
I remember the first time I drover a car in traffic after 62 (get)my driver’s license. I was very nervous in that heavy traffic--my driving style 63 (show)that I wasn’t very confident driver. Now I am much more 64 (experience) as a driver. Although I still don’t consider 65 (me) a perfect one, I’m much more confident behind the wheel than 66 I was when I started.
In general, it is useless to work hard for doing something 67 (perfect)when you do it for the first time You 68 (be) setting the bar so high that you just feel bad when you are unable to meet the level you have set.
Also, perfection is just another way 69 (delay),so trying to be perfect is just 70 waste of time. You should work hard for excellence instead.
