Dear Editor,

Recent reports have indicated an additional 1, 400 Marines海军陆战队are being sent to Afghanistan in the coming weeks. This means it costs over $1 million annually on the ground over there. I do place a higher level of blame on the policymakers who send soldiers off to kill and be killed in the field. I think the human race needs to think more about killing.

One needs to do the introspection: “Are these wars JUST?” I believe that all of our wars since 1945 have been illegal, under international law as well. I suggest that all your readers examine their conscience as it relates to the matter of making war. The fact that many soldiers are motivated by a strong sense of duty does not give them some unqualified(绝对的) moral right to support these wars or any other. It’s responsible for all the troops, and the entire population, to determine whether the Afghan or Iraq wars are in accordance with(符合) the development of the state.

I wish someone would give me one or more logical reasons why we are still fighting in Afghanistan and what our goals are. I certainly don’t understand it and neither do many who are more knowledgeable than I.

Outsiders have tried unsuccessfully for centuries to conquer Afghanistan, and we seem to be no more successful. We are trying to develop a stable central government, but the country is badly divided into ethnic and tribal groups, and the current government is corrupt腐败的. Moreover, we are apparently regarded as undesirable occupiers by many of its people, most notably(尤其) the Taliban(塔利班).

If we are to continue spending billions every year in Afghanistan and killing hundreds of our people and many of theirs, our government must provide us with a reasonable  explanation of why we are doing so and what we can expect to accomplish.

George Myers

Do you remember the man who contributed a lot to the understanding of British and American English? Noah Webster, born on October 16, 1758, is known for The American Dictionary of the English Language.  He has been called the “Father of American Scholarship and Education”. His “Blue-Backed Speller” books were used to teach spelling and reading to five generations of American children. But how much do you know about him beyond that?

At the age of 16, Noah Webster began attending Yale College. Unfortunately, he spent his four years at Yale during the American Revolutionary War, and, because of food shortages, many of his college classes were held in Glastonbury, Connecticut. Later, he served in the army.

Having graduated from Yale in 1778, Webster wanted to continue his education in order to earn his law degree. He had to teach school in order to pay for his education. He set up many small schools that didn't survive, but he was a good teacher because instead of forcing his students to learn, like most teachers did, he rewarded them.

He earned his law degree in 1781, but did not practice law until 1789. Once he started he found the law was not to his liking. Webster did not have much money.

In 1793, Alexander Hamilton lent him $1500 to move to New York City to edit a newspaper. In December, he founded New York 's first daily newspaper, American Minerva, and edited it for four years. For decades, he published textbooks, political essays, a report on some diseases, and newspaper articles for his party, He wrote so much that a modern  list of his published works required 655 pages .

Noah Webster died on May 28, 1843 and was buried in the Grove Street Cemetery.

If you are in a crowd, a first and most important thing is to make yourself familiar with your surroundings(周围的事物) and mentally notice alternate exits. No matter where you are, make sure you always know how to get out.

Make sure you know the type of ground you are standing on. For example, in a crowd of moving people wet ground can be dangerous, causing you to fall. You should know the general atmosphere of the event, as panic situations can often be predicted. When in danger, a few seconds can make all the difference, giving you the possibility of taking advantage of your escape route. Always stay closer to the escape route

If you find yourself in the middle of a moving crowd, do not fight against the pressure, do not stand still or sit down, because you could easily get injured or even be killed by being stepped on by other people. Instead, move in the same direction of the crowd; take advantage of any space that may open up to move sideways to the crowd movement where the flow is weaker. Keep your hands up by your chest, which will protect your chest during the movement.

If you fall, get up quickly. If you can’t get up because you are injured, get someone to pull you back up. If you fall and can not get up, keep moving by crawling(爬行)in the same direction of the crowd. Do not lie on your stomach or back, as this is dangerous for your body.

The worst situation is to be pushed by the crowd against an immovable object. Try to shun

high walls, as the crowd pressure can build up rapidly. After you’re pushed forward, the way you move is on a diagonal(斜线). There’s always space between people. You work your way out that way till you get out of the crowd.

9When you are in a crowd the first thing you do is ____.

A. fight against the pressure

B. stay closer to an immovable object

C. move in the same direction of the crowd

A. you must go to the exit quickly

B. you must not stand still or sit down

C. you’d better stop moving forward

D. you should push your way out

11The underlined word “shun” in the last paragraph probably means ____.

A. leave for      B. keep off      C. jump on         D. break down

12. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. How to survive the rush crowd

B. How to enjoy yourself in a crowd

C. How to protect yourself in a crowd

D. How to run away from people

People are compassionate. With effort, we can translate compassion into action. An experience last weekend showed me this is true. I work part-time in a supermarket across from a building for the elderly. These old people are our main customers, and it’s not hard to lose patience over their slowness. But last Sunday, one aged gentleman appeared to teach me a valuable lesson. This untidy man walked up to my register (收款机) with a box of biscuits. He said he was out of cash, had just moved into his room, and had nothing in his cupboards. He asked if we could let him have the food on trust. He promised to repay me the next day.

I couldn’t help staring at him. I wondered what kind of person he had been ten or twenty years before, and what he would be like if luck had gone his way. I had a hurt in my heart for this kind of human soul, all alone in the world. I told him that I was sorry, but store rules didn’t allow me to do so. I felt stupid and unkind saying this, but I valued my job.

Just then, another man, standing behind the first, spoke up. If anything, he looked more pitiable. “Charge it to me,” was all he said.

What I had been feeling was pity. Pity is soft and safe and easy. Compassion, on the other hand, is caring in action. I thanked the second man but told him that was not allowed either. Then I reached into my pocket and paid for the biscuits myself. I reached into my pocket because these two men had reached into my heart and taught me compassion.

1. The aged gentleman who wanted to buy the biscuits _______.

A. promised to obey the store rules

B. forgot to take any money with him

    C. hoped to have the food first and pay later

2. Which of the following best describes the old gentleman?

    A. kind and lucky                            B. friendly and helpful

    C. poor and lonely                          D. hurt and disappointed

3. The writer acted upon the store rules because _______.

    A. he expected someone else to pay for the old man

B. he felt no pity for the old gentleman

    C. he considered the old man dishonest

D. he wanted to keep his present job

4. What does the writer learn from his experience?

    A. Wealth is more important than anything else.

B. Obeying the rules means more than compassion.

C. Experience is better gained through practice.

D. Helping others is easier said than done.

How to teach a child to respect

As a child grows out of being an infant and begins to notice and react to the world around him, you may find yourself wondering how you possibly impart all of the things that he needs to become a responsible, respectful adult.   36   A child who learns to respect all he meets not only receives respect from others, but also learns to respect himself as well.

l         Show your child respect. This is perhaps the best way to teach your child how to respect others. Listen to your child by giving him your full attention and he will learn to listen to you, understanding how important this is in communication.

l          37  The more you say “please” and “thank you” to your child, the more likely he will learn

to use them with you and others. Politeness then becomes a normal part of any conversation.

l         Agree to disagree.   38   Explain your decision so that he will understand your reasoning

and expect respectful responses. Disagreeing with you doesn't equate to disobedience.

l         Control your impulse to overact. When a situation arises between you and your child that

requires calmness, keep in mind that you are supposed to be modeling correct behavior.  39

l         Praise, praise, praise! So much is focused on what a child does wrong and how to correct it

that the accomplishments are not celebrated enough.   40

A.       Teach manners by using polite requests and responses.

B.       Try to remember that a child won't always agree with you.

C.       Respect is necessary for a meaningful and successful life.

D.       If he sees you lose temper, he is more likely to respond that way in future.

E.       A child may act like he pleases, but will respect being given limits.

F.       When you see your child exhibit respectful behavior, make sure he knows just how proud you are of him.

G.       Setting a good example is the best way to start a child on the path to respect.

Linus Pauling, the only person who has won two undivided Nobel Prizes, was born in Portland, Oregon. He attended Washington High School but because of an unimportant detail he did not receive his diploma until 1962, long after he had received his Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Oregon State College in 1922. He had chosen to study this major because he could get a good job with it.

He won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1954 for his research into the nature of the chemical bond and its application to the explanation of the structure of complex substances. His interest in the behavior of molecules (分子) led him from physical chemistry to biological chemistry, especially of the human body. He began with proteins and their main parts, the amino acids (氨基酸), which are called the building blocks of life. In 1950, he constructed the first satisfactory model of a protein molecule, a discovery very important to the understanding of the living cell.

During World War II, Pauling was a member of the Research Board for National Security, for which he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Merit in 1948. However, the use of the atomic bomb near the end of the war turned Pauling in a new direction. Having long worked on the structure of molecules, he took an immediate interest in the deadly effects of nuclear fallout on human molecular structures.

From then on, Pauling protested the production of the hydrogen bomb and supported the prevention of the spread of nuclear weapons. Through his efforts, The NuclearTestBan Treaty, declaring all nuclear tests to be illegal except underground ones, came into effect on October 10, 1963, the same day Linus Pauling was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace.

1. From the first paragraph, we learn that Linus Pauling ______________.

A. didn’t study hard while in Washington High School

B. is the only scientist who has won two Nobel Prizes

C. was once badly treated in Washington High School

D. chose to study chemical engineering to earn his living

2. Which of the following things did Pauling pay much attention to at first?

A. The “behavior” of molecules        B. Physical chemistry.

C. Biological chemistry.              D. The human body.

3. During World War II, Linus Pauling ___________.

A. had to stop his research because of the war

B. made great contributions to the safety of the country

C. joined the army to fight for the safety of the country

D. took part in researching nuclear bombs

Stop eating yourself stupid

We all know that poor nutrition can lead to bad health and even weight gain.  36   A recent study has found that what you eat could very likely play a role in how smart you are.

According to the study, rats fed a high-fat diet for 10 days showed signs of weakness and even had trouble finding treats that were waiting for them.   37   Actually high-fat diet could weaken our intelligence—but so can a calorie-restricted diet. The trick appears to lie in finding a nice balance.

Here are ways to achieve that happy balance and make you smarter through diet, exercise and improving your brain power.

38  Aim to get this amount of calories each day. If you need to drop a few pounds, take away the number you get by 400; consume that number of calories each day until you drop the weight.

Eat the right foods in addition to getting the right amount of calories. Aim for healthy foods that include good amounts of protein, fiber, fruits and vegetables, healthy whole grains, healthy fats and plenty of water. Well! Don’t forget to exercise your mind while doing so. Read a book. Try a new recipe. Do some puzzles. __39__

40  Aim for at least three 30-minute sessions a week. I like simple exercises such as walking, but anything that raises the heart rate is good. You may be fond of music too. Combine them! Some people like to listen to classical music such as Bach or Mozart, but rock music lovers will be happy to learn that this genre can help make you smarter as well.

A. Exercise regularly with happy mind forever.

B. Your health depends on your exercise plan.

C. Remember: All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

D. Now add “lack of intelligence” to the list.

E. You may be puzzled whether it has something with us.

F. These are all good ways to help increase your smarts.

G. Figure out how many calories you need to maintain your weight.

He was a professor. At the age of 90, he still worked eight hours every day regardless  61   the weather.

His secretary said: “He was extremely old, but he forced himself to walk from his living place to the office through two blocks.  62  would take him an hour to do so, but he insisted because it made him get a sense of    63  (succeed).”

One day, a university student  64  (step) out of his office with a pile of books. He complained: “He always answers my questions with just a yes or no. However, he always gives me dozens of books and suggests me  65  (find) the answer on my own.”

By chance, the professor knew    66   the student complained about. He explained to him with a smile: “This is the method I have learnt---the  67  (hard) you work independently, the better solutions you will find. Hello, everyone._

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Thank you.

I had worried myself sick over Simons mother coming to see me. I was a new teacher, and I gave an honest account of the students work. In Simons case, the grades were awfully low. He couldn’t read his own handwriting. But he was a bright student. He discussed adult subjects with nearly adult comprehension. His work in no way reflected his abilities.

So when Simon’s mother entered the room, my palms (手掌心) were sweating. I was completely unprepared for her kisses on both my cheeks. “I came to thank you,” she said, surprising me beyond speech. Because of me, Simon had become a different person. He talked of how he loved me, he had begun to make friends, and for the first time in his twelve years, he had recently spent an afternoon at a friend’s house. She wanted to tell me how grateful she was for the self-respect I had developed in her son. She kissed me again and left.

I sat, stunned, for about half an hour, wondering what had just happened. How did I make such a life-changing difference to that boy without even knowing it? What I finally came to remember was one day, several months before, when some students were giving reports in the front of the class, Jeanne spoke quietly, and to encourage her to raise her voice, I had said, “Speak up. Simon is the expert on this. He is the only one you have to convince, and he can’t hear you in the back of the room.” That was it. From that day on, Simon had sat up straighter, paid more attention, smiled more, and became happy. And it was all because he happened to be the last kid in the last row. The boy who most needed praise was the one who took the last seat that day.

It taught me the most valuable lesson over the years of my teaching career, and I’m thankful that it came early and positively. A small kindness can indeed make a difference.

36. We can infer that when Simon’s mother entered the room, the writer felt _______.

A. satisfied                B. nervous                 C. happy                   D. surprised
37. Why did Simon’s mother come to visit her son’s teacher?

A. Because she worried about her son’s poor work.
B. Because she wanted to show her gratitude to the teacher.
C. Because Simon asked her to do so.
D. Because she wanted to know her son’s performance in the school.

38. What the teacher said in paragraph 3 is intended to _______.
A. encourage Jeanne to speak louder
B. encourage Simon to work hard
