Every fast-food employee knows that the drive-through window is the worst position. The window sticks with constant ice; the roar of engines hurts your   21  ; your words are lost in the howling wind.

Every once in a while, the sub-zero temperatures seal a    23    windows shut. Drivers don’t exactly enjoy having to stand outside in the cold,  24   their orders into a speaker box, when they expect to drive through on their heated leather seats. In such cases, most customers tend to show their annoyance to the employees.

This woman was   25  .

Five vehicles passed, then ten, then twenty. No one refused to pay. Customers stood at my window   38   a fist-full of change to buy drinks for a complete stranger. Cars drove off, honking (鸣笛) and    39    their thanks.

It took multiple weddings for Christine Law to realize what she needed to do. In the summer of 2014, her schedule was packed with friends, marriage celebrations—flowers --- filled occasions that got her thinking, “Where do all the flowers go after the party?” More often than not, they were thrown out. Law, then 27, was confident she could find a better use for them.

By August, she had a plan: convince couples and companies hosting events to donate their flowers, which she would pick up and deliver within 48 hours to seniors across the city. She wanted to bring beauty into the lives of the elderly. She drew on her experience volunteering with non-profits in order to set up her own organization, which she called Floranthropie. Not having enough bouquets (花束) for all 150 people of a health center, Law asked the staff to provide a list of patients who needed cheering up most, “The first woman I approached thought it was a mistake, and that the flowers couldn’t possibly be for her,” says Law. “I said they were a gift, and we talked for a half hour.”

In addition to health centers, Floranthropie focuses on community groups devoted to the elderly. Theleme is a volunteer for Les Petits Fieres, an organization that aims to help the elderly who don’t have a support system. The group receives a dozen or so bouquets from Floranthropie monthly, and then redistributes them. “Our motto is ‘flowers before bread’,” says Theleme. “We don’t focus on primary care, but rather on nourishing (滋养) the spirit. Floranthropie helps that. It’s amazing what a big difference a small bouquet can make.”

In the beginning, most of Floranthropie’s donations came through word of mouth. These days, Law receives messages from strangers via her organization’s Facebook page and has connected with corporations and flower wholesalers. Law hopes to expand Floranthropie nationally, but at this point is happy to be able to oversee each delivery personally.

       A. She was moved.                                           B. She was excited.

       C. She was worried.                                         D. She was surprised.

3. What can we infer about Floranthropie from Laetitia Theleme’s words?

       A. It should focus on primary care.

       B. It is benefiting more than the elderly.

       C. It is doing something of great importance.

       D. It should cooperate with more non-profits.

4. What is the best title for the text?

Dear Mayor (市长) Lewis,

As we know, the city budget for next year does not include enough money to maintain the playing fields and skating rink (溜冰场) in Center Park. We are aware that the storms that hit Lyndon last summer caused a great amount of damage, and the city’s budget should first be used to repair the high school, city hall, and airport. Don’t you realize, however, what a loss the park will be?

Center Park is the best place in the city for sports, picnics, concerts, walking, and enjoying nature. It plays a vital role in the education of our children. Each year science teachers bring their classes to the park on field trips to study plants and animals. Small children use the playground equipment every day. There are no other parks nearby for these kids to enjoy themselves. Every day I see the park on my way to school. It is absolutely necessary to support Center Park.

The Lyndon High School Ice Skating Club would like to offer the city some help. We are suggesting a Skatathon. Our members would ask family, friends, and businesses for help, and then skate all day. For every mile skated, we would raise money to be used to maintain the fields and rink溜冰场. Also, some of our members are willing to help the park staff do simple repairs at the rink.

While it appears that the city can no longer afford Center Park, other facts tell us we have to maintain this park as a place for the entire Lyndon community. It is a green, refreshing place to go in the middle of the city. We hope our idea is the first of many good ideas to keep Center Park green and clean.

                                                                                                                   Sincerely yours,

Want to make a serious change in your health?  16  It might sound extreme because this diet excludes any foods that come from animals like dairy and meat products and all foods that are cooked at temperatures above 46 degrees Celsius. Essentially, the raw vegan diet focuses on raw plants, and there are good reasons why its quite popular these days.

Raw foodists believe that cooking food destroys important micronutrients(微量营养物).  17 A raw piece of broccoli(西兰花)is much healthier than a carrot that has been fried or boiled at a high temperature. Raw foodists believe that cooking food at high temperatures causes the addiction of harmful chemicals, such as carcinogens that can cause cancer. 18   Meat can be high in fat, usually contains chemicals and hormones, can be hard to digest, and so on. One raw foodist from New York City says that changing to a raw vegan diet has made a huge difference in his health, I feel better, I dont get sick as much , and I have a lot more energy.

Another reason to raw vegan is for the environment. 19  Meat production has been a huge problem for the environment, too. It is one of the leading sources of greenhouse gas emissions, along with cars and air conditioning. 20  Users talk about how they feel close to the Earth when consuming only raw materials. There is one health drawback to the diet, which is that it does not provide enough vitamin B12, calcium, and so on . This is easily remedied with diet supplements, though. The raw vegan diet may be the healthy choice of the future.

A.Health concerns that come with eating meat are commonly known.

B.Maybe its time to think about the raw vegan(素食)diet.

C.Then there is the spiritual side to the diet.

D.They can nourish (滋养)people and prevent illnesses.

E.Cooking usually uses fossil fuels and creates pollution.

F.However ,it appears to depend on the type of meat eaten, as well as the cooking method.

G.Some may not be accustomed to the raw vegan diet.

Children need to be taught about debt, specifically loans and credit cards.

Talk about giving.

Children should learn that money doesn't always need to be used for them.    Don't just write the charitable check. Get -the kids involved in the process by asking them to pick and check, charities.

Websites like http:// www. charitynavigator. org and guidestar. org provide information and ratings.

39

If they open a savings account, they can place their savings in the bank to earn a small amount of interest. Besides, they can learn about fees, account maintenance ( 管理员) and even interest. It can provide a motivation for them to save money. You. can offer them a prise if they put the money into savings.

Stealing? I guess we were stealing. But in our 13-year-old brains the matter of ownership 41 occurred to us. We just wanted to 42 some strawberries in Mr Jordan’s backyard. So we went 43 into his backyard.

When we started 44 his strawberries, all of a sudden Mr Jordan came outside.

“What are you boys doing out here?” he 45 and tried to grab one or two as my friends rushed past him, but they were too 46 for the older gentleman to seize, and all the boys except me disappeared within seconds.

Speed was never my 47 .So I could just stand there and 48 whatever punishment would surely come my way from Mr Jordan.

He marched me to my house and my mother criticized me. My friends gathered to celebrate their 49 and observe my capture. They 50 me about it for days afterwards, while all I could do was complain to my father about how 51 it was.

“I don’t think so,” Dad said. “You got the punishment you 52 .”

“But what about other guys?” I asked.

Dad said, “You can’t 53 what happens to other people. You can only 54 what happens to you. You picked Mr Jordan’s strawberries that night, and you were punished for it. To me, that is completely fair.”

Then I couldn’t 55 my father’s words. 56 through the years I knew what he talked about. We didn’t come to earth with a 57 that life would treat us fairly.

Like Dad said, the 58 thing we can actually 59 is what happens to us. How we choose to respond to what happens to us is truly the 60 by which the quality of our lives will be measured whether or not we think it happens fairly.
