Using a laptop while in the company of a partner, without interacting with him, resulted in a couple’s negative influence on their relationship. Why is setting goals important? ___11___ Instead of just letting life happen to you, goals allow you to make your life happen. Successful people imagine how their life should be and set lots of goals.

By setting goals you are taking control of your life. It's like having a map to show you where you want to go. Think of it this way. There are two drivers. One has a destination in mind which can be found on a map. She can drive straight there surely without any wasted time of wrong turns. ___12___ She starts off at the same time from the same place as the first driver, but she drives aimlessly around, never getting anywhere, just using up gas. Which driver do you want to be?

Winners in life set goals and follow them through. They decide what they want in life and then get there by making plans and setting goals. ___13___ Goals aren't difficult to set and they aren't difficult to reach.

___14___ You are the one who must decide what to achieve and in what direction to aim your life.

Research tells us that when we write a goal down we are more likely to achieve it.___15___. Like a contract(合同) with yourself, they are harder to neglect or forget. Also when you write your goals in a particular way, you are able to make yourself continuously aware of situations that will bring you nearer to your goal.

ABecause everybody should have a goal in his mind

BUnsuccessful people usually just let life happen by accident.

CThe other driver has no goal, or destination or map.

DIt's difficult for a driver to reach his destination without a map.

EIt's up to you to find out what your goals really are.

FBecause goals can help you do, be, and experience everything you want in life.

One day I happened to finding a chatting room in my QQ, there people were chatting in English. I tried to chat with some of them. To my surprised, I found the oral English of some junior students were better than me. I asked them for advice and they told me to practice more on QQ. But every day after that I would spend one hour practice my oral English on QQ. Day by day I learned from many useful words and expressions. A Deed a Day

It was a busy day as usual. I was making sandwiches and balancing the phone between my shoulder and chin. The washing machine sounded as my husband walked in with our daughters. We had only about twenty minutes to eat _41__ we had to take the girls to their next activity. My husband seemed a bit _42_ that dinner was not on the table.

That night, I had a heavy __43__, thinking we were becoming taskmasters on an assembly line (流水线). We had become too __44__ in our own tasks and not very considerate towards those around us. We needed to do something to bring back some meaning into our lives. It needed to be something that would __45_ our own agendas and energize us toward the common good.

I bought a notebook, named it “Our Deed Diary” and held a family meeting. I told my family I wanted us all to think about doing a _46_ for others every day. It could be for each other or for people outside our__47_. And we all needed to write it down in the notebook.

I thought one deed a day was too easy. However, it was actually __48_ than it seemed because it had to be something __49__what we had already done. Sending birthday cards to people we already sent cards to every year would not __50_.

We had a rough __51__. On some days, someone would forget to __52_ a good deed, while on other days, we would forget to write our good deeds in the diary. After a few weeks though, I found myself waking up in the morning trying to __53__what good deed I could do for someone that day. My daughters began to rush to me after school to __54_me the good deed they had done.

Now, after a year, I am happy to say that it is making a(n) __55__ in our lives. Instead of always __56_ what the day will bring for us, we think about what we can do for someone else.

Who would have thought that trying to do a simple kindness a day would be so 57  I feel my daughters have felt inner joy that you can only __58_ by giving to someone else from your heart. The best thing is that you feel so great about doing something for someone else; you don’t even look for or expect anything in __59_. So, when someone does return the favor, it is an enormous and positive __60_.

American black bears appear in a variety of colors despite their name. In the eastern part of their range(地理分布区), most of these bears have shiny black fur, but in the west they grow brown, red or even yellow coats. To the north, the black bear is actually gray or white. Even in the same litter(), both brown and black furred bears may be born.

Black bears are the smallest of all American bears, ranging in length from 5 to 6 feet, weighing from 300 to 500 pounds. Their eyes and ears are small and their eyesight and hearing are not as good as their sense of smell. Like all bears, the black bear is shy, clumsy(笨拙的) and rarely dangerous. However, if cornered, the black bear can become a fearful enemy.

Black bears feed on leaves, roots, fruit, insects, fish and even larger animals. One of the most interesting characteristics of bears, including the black bear, is their winter sleep. Unlike many other animals, bears do not actually hibernate(冬眠). Although the bear does not eat during the winter months, its temperature remains almost normal, and it breathes regularly four or five times per minute.

Most black bears live alone, except during the mating season (交配季节). A litter of one to four cubs is born in January or February and they remain with their mother until they are fully grown or about one and a half years old. Black bears can live as long as thirty years in the wild, and even longer in game preserves set aside for them.

For years scientists have been worried about the effects of air pollution on the earth’s natural conditions. Some believe the air inside many houses may be more dangerous than the air outside. It may be one hundred times worse.

Indoor air pollution can cause a person to feel tired, to suffer eye pain, headache and other problems. Some pollutants (污染物) can cause breathing disorders, diseases of blood and even cancer. Most scientists agree that every modern house has some kind of indoor pollution.

People have paid more attention to the problem now. It is said that when builders began making houses and offices they did not waste energy. To do this they built buildings that limited the flow of air between inside and outside. They also began using man-made building materials. These materials are now known to let out harmful gases.

As the problem became more serious, scientists began searching for a way to deal with it. They discovered a natural pollution control system for building-green plants. Scientists do not really know how plants control air pollution. They believe that a plant’s leaves absorb or take in the pollutants. In exchange the plant lets out oxygen through its leaves and small organizations on its roots. Scientists suggest that all buildings should have one large plant or several small plants inside for every nine square metres of space. Studies of different plants show that each absorbs different chemicals. So the most effective way to clean the air is to use different kinds of plants. Having green plants inside your house can make it a prettier and more healthy place.

It was Mother’s day morning last year and I was doing my shopping at our local supermarket with my five-year-old son, Tenyson. As we were leaving, we found that only minutes earlier an elderly woman had fallen over at the entrance and had hit her head on the concrete. Her husband was with her, but there was blood everywhere and the woman was embarrassed and clearly in shock. Walking towards the scene, Tenyson became very upset about what had happened to the couple. He said to me, “Mum, its not much fun falling over in front of everyone.”

At the front of the supermarket a charity (慈善) group had set up a stand selling cooked sausages and flowers to raise funds. Tenyson suggested that we should buy the lady a flower. “It will make her feel better, “he said. I was amazed that he’d come up with such a sweet idea. So we went over to the flower seller and asked her if we could buy a flower for the lady to cheer her up. “Just take it,” she replied. “I can’t take your money for such a wonderful gesture.”

By now paramedics (救援人员) had arrived, and were attending the injured woman. As we walked up to her, my son became intimidated by all the blood and medical equipment. He said he was just too scared to go up to her.

Instead I gave the flower to the woman’s husband and told him, “My son was very upset for your wife and wanted to give her this flower to make her feel better.”

At that, the old man started crying and said, “thank you so much, you have a wonderful son. Happy Mother’s Day to you.” The man then bent down and gave his wife the flower, telling her who it was from. Though badly hurt and shaken, the old lady looked up at Tenyson with love in her eyes and gave him a little smite.
