Happy birthday! Do birthdays really make people happy? Of course they do. Birthdays celebrate the day we were born. Besides, that extra candle on the cake suggests another year of growth and maturity—or so we hope. We all like to imagine that we’re getting wiser and not just older. Most of us enjoy seeing the miracle of growth in others, as well. For instance, seeing our children develop and learn new things makes us feel proud. For Americans, like people in most cultures, growing up is a wonderful process. But growing old? That’s a different story.

Growing old is not exactly pleasant for people in youth-oriented American culture. Most Americans like to look young, act young and feel young. As the old saying goes, “You’re as young as you feel.” Older people joke about how many years young they are, rather than how many years old. People in some countries value the aged as a source of experience and wisdom. But Americans seem to favor those that are young, or at least “young at heart”.

Many older Americans find the “golden years” to be anything but golden. Economically, “senior citizens” often struggle just to get by. Retirement at age 65 brings a sharp decrease in personal income. Social security benefits usually cannot make up the difference. Older people may suffer from poor nutrition, medical care and housing. Some even experience age discrimination (歧视). In 1987, American sociologist Pat Moore dressed up like an older person and wandered city streets. She was of ten treated rudely—even cheated and robbed. However, dressed as a young person, she received much more respect.

Unfortunately, the elderly population in America is increasing fast. Why? People are living together. Fewer babies are being born. And middle-aged “baby boomers” are rapidly entering the groups of the elderly. America may soon be a place where wrinkles (皱纹) are “in”. Marketing experts are already noticing this group of consumers (消费者).

32. The main idea of the third paragraph is________.

   A. the golden years can make the old earn lots of money

   B. many old people in America are leading a hard life

   C. the old in America have to retire at the age of 65

   D. American social security benefits are not good

33. From the last paragraph we know that the underlined word “in” can be replaced by________.

A. serious                  B. bad                 C. disappearing slowly            D. growing fast

34. From this passage we can know________.

A. in America, growing up is not a wonderful process

   B. in America, growing up is as wonderful a process as growing old

   C. in America, growing up is a wonderful process, while growing old is not

   D. in America, growing old is a wonderful process, while growing up is not

35. What should be mentioned in the following paragraph?

   A. The public will change their attitude towards old people.

   B. People will provide more services to the old in their communities.

   C. Companies will soon produce more goods for old Americans.

   D. The government will pass laws to ensure the benefits of the people.

Some kids love going off to camp in the summer, playing volleyball, swimming, and so on. But I know that some kids absolutely hate it because I was one myself. They hate the cold sea and getting sand in their clothes and they hate being picked last for the volleyball team. 36 It’s especially for those kids who would rather spend time playing computer games than running around getting dirty. But you won’t be playing computer games, this course allows you to design them.

37  Two top game designers Mike Jones and Mel Wilson from the company Star Games are responsible for making favorites such as Mickey the Monkey and Rainforest Expedition. They will teach you the steps that go into creating a new game, and teach you how to use various computer programs and build some simple games yourself.

38  You won’t have to sleep in a tent either. Kids on the course will stay at a local hotel, where there is a gym, computers and a great canteen. No cooking on a campfire in the cold!

39  Last year, the course was extremely popular but it was only five days. This year we’re having an additional three days. So that’s over a week of gaming!

To go on the course, you need to be between thirteen and seventeen years old.  40  We only have space for twenty-two people. That’s slightly fewer than last year’s twenty five, because we don’t have as many teachers on the course this year. So hurry up and book your place!

If you’re still not sure whether to join or not, have a look at the website www.teengames.net,  that’s www.teengames.net and you can see what the students did on the course last year. You can book your place on the same site.

   B. Don’t worry about the living place.

   C. You will receive comfortable service.

   D. That’s why our course is so appealing.

   E. Places on the course are limited, though.

   F. The length of the course will be increased.

   G. You will get the chance to learn from experts.

While the presence of rats in homes may cause anxiety and annoyancethey rarely result in driving out the residents. But that is exactly what happened to the inhabitants of the 10squaremile Hawadax Island off the coast of Alaskaalmost 230 years ago.Now thanks to a fiveyear effort by scientiststhe terribly silent “Rat Island” as it had been called for many years has been returned to its rightful owners—birds!

Hawadax Island is part of a chain of volcanic islands in the Bering Sea called the Aleutian Islands. The rats that arrived there in 1780when a Japanese ship carrying them broke down nearbycompletely destroyed the native population because the environment of the island was not built to defend its animals from these predators. There isn't any tree on the islandwhich meant that the birds were accustomed to building their nests low in the groundgiving the rodents(啮齿动物) easy access to both eggs and baby chicks. As years passedthe birds that had called the island home for thousands of years became endangered and eventuallydisappeared completely.

In 2007the US FWS(Fish and Wildlife Service) started a serious plan to rid the island of the rats and try bringing back the beautiful birds that had once called it home.Given that there were an estimated 10000 rodents inhabiting “Rat Island” and the fact that they reproduce rapidlyit was not an easy task. But by 2009the island was officially declared rat free!

Then slowly but surelythe birds began to return. Unfortunatelysome of the pioneers were unintentionally killed from the leavings of the raticidea poison that had been used to wipe out the rodents. But now it seems things are becoming more stable and the island is starting to increasingly look like its former self. Before the transformation“Hawadax”also known as “Rat Island”was a silent and ghostly place with bird bonessnail remains and rocks covered in rat feces(粪便)

Todaybirds' singing and flying in and out is a common sight.Tufted puffins and song sparrowswhich had long disappearedare gradually making their way back.Scientists have also been observing an increase in ground nesting and shore birds.Though the island is still not back to its full glorythe signs are encouraging and things can only get betteras time passes.

28The underlined word “that” in Paragraph 1 probably refers to ________

Abirds' being driven out          Bthe presence of rats

Cbirds' returning to the island       Dresidents' worrying about rats

29Birds on Hawadax Island became an easy target because ________

Atheir chicks were extremely weak Bthey nested randomly

Cthey reproduced too rapidly      Dthis island was treeless

30From the passagewe can know the plan of US FWS ________

Ahas helped the island fully recovered

Bcost little but benefited greatly

Cinvolved poisoning the rats on a large scale

Daccomplished its goal after exactly 24 months

31Which would be the best title for the passage?

AFWS help get rare birds back to alaska island

BJapanese changed a bird paradise into rat island

CAlaska's rat island returns to a bird paradise

DFWS plan to drive rats out of rat Island

The BBC was founded in 1922, including radio and television services. It is based at Broadcasting House in London.

The BBC is controlled by some governors chosen by the government, but these people have freedom and the government can’t interfere(干扰). That is, the BBC is supposed not to be the mouthpiece(代言人)of the government. Everyone has to buy a yearly license, since there is no advertising on BBC radio or television. It is from the sale of licenses that the BBC gets most of its money. A license for a black and white set costs 8 pounds, and for a colour set 18 pounds a year.

There are four specialized radio channels, which broadcast different kinds of programmes. Radio I is mainly pop musicRadio 2 deals with light music, sports and other programmes. Radio 3 broadcasts serious music, talks on serious subjects etcNews broadcasts are mainly given by Radio 4.

Many years ago, my dad was facing a serious heart condition. He was unable to do a steady job. He fell suddenly ill and had to be admitted to the hospital.

He wanted to do something to keep himself busy, so he decided to volunteer at the local children’s hospital. My dad loved kids. It was the perfect job for him. He ended up working with the seriously ill children. He would talk, play, and do arts with them.

One of his kids was a girl with a rare disease that paralyzed(瘫痪)her from the neck down. She couldn’t do anything, and she was very depressed. My dad decided to try to help her. He started visiting her in her room, bringing paints, brushes and paper. He stood the paper up, put the paintbrush in his mouth and began to paint. He didn’t use his hands at all. All the while he would tell her, “See, you can do anything you set your mind to.”

At the end of the day, she began to paint using her mouth, and she and my dad became friends. Soon after, the little girl was sent home because the doctors felt there was nothing else they could do for her. My dad also left the children’s hospital for a little while because he became ill. Some time later after my dad had recovered and returned to work, in came the little girl who had been paralyzed and only this time she was walking. She ran straight over to my dad and hugged him really tight. She gave him a picture she had done using her hands. At the bottom it read: “Thank you for helping me walk.”

My dad would cry every time he told us this story and so would we. He would say sometimes love is more powerful than doctor, and my dad who died just a few months after the little girl gave the picture loved every single child in that hospital.

Whether you are in a professional or social environment, treat people with respect. While everyone is different, all people like to be treated with dignity, treated fairly and made to feel as though they matter. Keeping a few rules in mind about how to show respect will resolve problems easily when they occur.      36

Punctuality

Be punctual. Actions speak louder than words, and one of the easiest ways to send a nonverbal message of disrespect to someone is by showing up late for an appointment or a meeting. One tip for ensuring that you are punctual is to pretend that the appointment is 15-30 minutes before its actual time.    37  ,

Listening to Others

Showing respect to others includes allowing them to speak uninterrupted, listening to what they are saying and acting on reasonable requests that they have for improving the relationship. If another person is explaining something to you, when he is finished, repeat your understanding of the conversation to show him that you are on the same page. Listening is one of the hardest, yet simplest things to do to demonstrate respect   38  .

Empowering Others

Respecting people involves not just allowing for differences in terms of their goals and ambitions, but going one step further and encouraging them to follow their dreams, no matter how impossible they may be. Discouraging people from achieving their goals can come across as condescending (居高临下的)from their viewpoints     39    .

Manners

Do not underestimate the power of manners as a way of showing respect.     40

Likewise, refrain from speaking loudly on a cell phone in public places or texting while you are in the company of others.

ABecause the natural tendency is to talk, few people are capable of truly listening.

BAnd it will also reduce the likelihood that interpersonal disputes will arise

CSaying “please”,“thank you ”and “you’re welcome”develops goodwill between people

DThis allows you extra time in case in case an unexpected (e.g.traffic) occurs

EEvents beyond your control may make it impossible to arrive on time

FAnd it weakens their sense of ability and importance

GYou do not think their time is valuable

Dear editor,

As is known, all the parents love their children. So it is with my parent. I feel lucky that I have such kind parents. And I deeply appreciate it their love for me.

Therefore, I have to admit sometimes they show me so many love that I feel uneasy. I think I am old enough handle my personal affairs. At this time, instead of refuse their help rudely, I’d like to talk with them openly and polite. I will tell them I was old enough to deal with some of my own matters on my own.
