Mark Twain was a great writer. He was from the USA. He was born in 1835. He was also a famous speaker. He was famous for his sense of humour. Many people liked to listen to him talk because he liked to tell some interesting stories to make people laugh all the time.
One day Mark Twain was going to a small town because of his writing. Before he was going to leave, one of his friends said to him that there were always a lot of mosquitoes in the town and told him that he’d better not go there. Mark Twain waved (摇动) his hand and said, “It doesn’t matter. The mosquitoes are no relatives of mine. I don’t think they will come to visit me.”
After he arrived at the town, Mark Twain stayed in a small hotel near the station. He went into his room, but when he was just about to have a rest, quite a few mosquitoes flew about him. The waiters felt very sorry about that. “I’m very sorry, Mr Mark Twain. There are too many mosquitoes in our town.” One of them said to him.
Mark Twain, however, made a joke, saying to the waiter, “The mosquitoes are very clever. They know my room number. They didn’t come into the wrong room.” What he said made all the people present laugh heartily.

Jennifer Lawrence, 25, is known for being down-to-earth and likable — she ordered McDonald’s on the red carpet at the Oscars.
And when she described her anger and disappointment at the fact that women are not equal to men in Hollywood, Lawrence “continued to make America fall in love with her”, said Business Insider.
Earlier this year, an E-mail from film company Sony Pictures showed that Lawrence and Amy Adams made less money for American Hustle (2013) than their male (男性) co-stars, even though both women played major roles in the movie.
In an article published in Lenny Letter, a popular e-mail newsletter, Lawrence wrote “I’m trying to find the ‘adorable (可爱的) way to state my opinion and still be likable’!”
Lawrence joins a long list of actresses, including Meryl Streep and Cate Blanchett, who have spoken up about Hollywood’s pay gap.
According to Forbes, the 10 highest paid movie actors in 2015, led by Robert Downey Jr, made $431 million. But the 10 highest paid movie actresses, led by Lawrence, only made about $218 million. The pay gap comes partly from the low number of actresses. According to a report in August, only 28.1 percent of characters in 2014’s 100 top grossing (高票房的) films were female (女性) and of them, only 21 percent had a female lead or co-lead character.
“People with more experience are paid more,” Nancy Dubue, the president CEO of A+E Networks, told Variety, “The problem is that the industry still gives too many men that experience.”
The pay gap is a problem that affects the whole US. The White House reported that women earn 78 cents to every dollar a man gets there.
“This is what made Lawrence’s piece powerful: it showed that women still experience pay inequality everywhere-whether you’re Hollywood’s top talent or you work in a retail store,” commented CNN.
As Lawrence points out, it’s not just about less payment for women; it’s also about women making sure that their pay shows their value.

When I worked in a large city, passing by someone who was homeless wasn’t an uncommon sight. The difficult situation of those I saw touched me deeply.
I felt I must do something, and, as a single mother, I decided to come up with a plan that fitted my limited budget (预算). I began by setting aside five to ten dollars and passing them out to those I met on the street each week.
Though a dollar felt like a small amount, I realized how powerful it was. For me, I recognized that those I passed by were people just like me. Sometimes we would joke a bit and smile together. On some occasions, I was able to give more. I don’t know how and if the dollars helped, but I know that the connections we made did.
One day after I had started this weekly practice, I had saved up enough to buy myself a new winter coat. With it around my shoulders, I realized that my old coat could still be put to use by someone who had little or nothing to protect them from the cold. However, at that moment, I felt inspired to pass on this opportunity for kindness. I turned to the salesman who had helped me, and asked if he would feel comfortable taking my old coat, walking to the corner, and offering it to someone in need. Slightly taken aback, he smiled. “I will as soon as I get a break,” he said. “Thanks for being so considerate.”
I can’t help but feel that my experiences with kindness have moved me to pass it on, and in this way, I feel I’ve helped more than just those I pass by on the street. Kindness touches many hearts, and I am grateful for the way it has touched mine.

As I went through school, I came to understand that life was about competition. The only thing that mattered was doing better than everyone else. I watched this cycle through the lives of my four older brothers. I watched them win awards time and time again and admired by teachers and adults alike. And I wanted all of that. But then I learned that I couldn’t compete with my brothers or with others for that matter. I didn’t enjoy math and science nearly as much as I enjoyed English literature. My stomach would often hurt thinking about the amount of time I’d have to put in studying and working to get ahead of everyone. Around the seventh grade, I decided that I didn’t care about being a top student anymore. I just wanted to do what brought me joy. I wanted to just read and write for days.
Then I watched my older brothers enter the workplace and not enjoy the career path they had chosen. That made my stomach hurt, too. At the same time, they were making a lot of money and were able to afford expensive cars and go on trips that seemed enjoyable, but I decided that I’d not trade the cars and trips for having a job that brought me joy.
So I did just that. I majored in English in college with a concentration on creative fictions. For the past decade, I’ve had a career in a non-profit organization serving children in need. It has brought me great joy. There’s not a daily drive to compete in the market place and be better than another organization so that we increase our profits. The drive is to serve another person with excellence. And the other unexpected aspects are that while I have never made a lot of money, I have a car and have been fortunate to take some pretty amazing trips for work.

A. He makes great contributions to society.
B. He is less successful than his brothers.
C. He doesn’t travel anywhere.

A. we should not compete with others
B. we should try to do better than others
C. we should do what we really like
D. we should be devoted to helping others

36 You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so. However, anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here is how:
Plan your time carefully. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. . Then decide a good, regular time for studying. 37 A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
Make good use of your time in class. 38 Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes, preview the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, and read that material. 39 If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you’ll remember it longer.
Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be over worried.
40 You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.
A. There are other methods that might help you with your studying.
B. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment.
C. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says.
D. No one can become a top student unless he or she works hard.
E. Maybe you are an average student.
F. Make full use of class time to take notes of what the teacher says in class.
G. This will help you understand the next class.
One morning I wasted nearly an hour watching a tiny ant carry a huge feather(羽毛). Several times, it 41 several obstacles(障碍) in its path. And after a momentary pause it would make the necessary detour (绕道). 42 one point, the ant had to cross a crack(裂缝) about 10mm wide. After some 43 thoughts, the ant laid the feather over the crack, walked 44 it and picked the feather up on the other side, then continued on its way. I was 45 by the cleverness of this ant. It was only a small insect, lacking in 46 yet equipped with a brain to reason, explore, discover and overcome. 47 this ant, like the other two-legged creatures 48 on the earth, also shares human feelings.
After some time the ant 49 reached its destination--- a flower bed and a small hole that was the entrance to its 50 home. It was there that the ant met its 51 . How could that large feather possibly 52 such a small hole? Of course, it couldn’t. So the ant, after all this 53_ and using great brightness, overcoming problems all along the way, just gave up the 54_ and went home. The ant had not thought the problem through 55 it began its journey and in the end the feather was 56 more than a burden. Isn’t our 57 like that?
We worry about our families; we worry about the 58 of money; and we worry about all kinds of things. These are all burdens --- the things we pick up along life’s path, and drag them around the obstacles and over the cracks that life will bring, only to 59 that at the destination they are 60 and we can’t take them with us.
