College students constantly hear the praises of education. We have all become used to believing that a college education is always a guarantee (保证) of an easier life. I was nine years old when my fourth-grade teacher presented me with a task, to write down all of the things I wanted in my life. I filled my paper with things like: own a big house and have servants; be rich and have a good job. The next day my teacher handed back my paper and in red ink she wrote: “GO TO COLLEGE.” For a long time, I was completely sure that once I got an education, BAM! Life would be easier.
However, education cannot promise all wishes, dreams, and desires (strong wishes). Society must refuse to accept the foolish idea that a college education's main purpose is to satisfy our desires and secure success. Like most challenging things, education is a gamble(赌博)in which results depend entirely on people’s ability to look past their wants to see the realism and reason behind their wants.
For instance, my first year of college, I took a sociology class. In class, we were taught that Third World countries were poor. We learned that our quality of life would be almost impossible for an average person in those countries. I began to examine my own desire to be rich. To always go after money felt selfish when knowing others had none at all. Learning about other society's financial situations forced me to look beyond what I wanted.
Through the process (过程) of education, everything once desired is tested. Wanting something is no longer enough; it’s more important to examine why we want it and whether we really want it. When my desire for money changed, everything changed. I stopped longing for money-driven careers and stopped valuing the people who had them. I began to examine the things I purchased and my reason for wanting them.
Education is a tool to be used to develop and advance our desires, so we can discover the things that are truly significant in life. Education is a source to expand our society to see beyond the superficial(表面的)attraction and the “quick fixes”, leaving the belief of an effortless life behind in order to desire a meaningful one.

As Eric Hoffer once said, “The hardest arithmetic(算术)to master is that which enables us to count our blessings.”
According to a legend, a young man while wandering around the desert came across a spring of delicious clear water. The water was so 41 and he filled his leather canteen(水壶)so he could bring some back to an elder who had been his teacher.
After a four-day journey he 42 the water to the old man, who took a deep 43 ,smiled warmly and thanked his 44 for the sweet water taken back from the 45 . The young man 46 to his village with a happy heart.
Later, the teacher let another student taste the water. He spat(吐)it out, saying it was 47 . It 48 had become smelly because of the old leather 49 .
The student asked his teacher: “Master, the water is awful. Why did you 50 to like it?”
The teacher 51 , “You only tasted the water. I tasted the 52 .The water was simply the container for an act of loving—kindness and nothing could be sweeter.”
I think we understand this 53 best when we receive innocent(天真无邪的)gifts of love from young children. Whether it’s a handmade paper plane or a painting drawn by them, our 54 and proper response is appreciation because we love the idea 55 the gift.
Gratitude(感恩)doesn’t 56 come naturally. 57 , most children and many adults value only the thing given 58 the feeling expressed in it. We should remind ourselves and teach our children about the beauty and purity of feelings and expressions of 59 .
After all, gifts from the 60 are really gifts.

Many students are now facing with problems like deciding whether to focus on science or art.Not taking the children’s interest or preferences in account, some parents force their children to make the choice as their will, that troubles many students.
Throughout our lives we have to make much choices. As students, we should talk to our parents or teachers especial on life-changing decisions. But when it came down to it, we’re the ones who must live with their choices. On the other hand, parents should try to help their children make the best possible decisions, instead forcing them to do something that against their will.
It depends on students themselves whether they’ll be science students and arts students.Just let their hearts show them the way.
Dear Kate,
It's really good to know you are covering for me while I'm away on the training course. Thanks so much. Knowing that you'll be teaching the kids has made me relaxed. I'm sure you'll get on fine with them. I thought I should leave you some notes on a couple of things that are planned for this week, and other advice that will hopefully see you through to next Friday!
• Tuesday: The class is going to visit the Dinosaur Museum. Make sure they take their notebooks and remind them on Monday to bring a packed lunch and the entrance money.
• Thursday: I've promised them they can watch a Disney DVD as a special treat. It's in my locker. There are some worksheets (活页练习题) to go with it. By the way, don't worry about marking them — I'll do it when I'm back.
• You know, the head teacher is on the warpath about being late, so be warned! If you get to school even a minute past 8:15, she's likely to give you a real telling-off.
Seriously, though, you'll have a great week — the kids are wonderful. Don't let Mark and Jack sit together and you shouldn't have any disciplinary (纪律的) problems! Which reminds me, if you do have any problems, just tell the head. She's very supportive when it comes to discipline. One last thing — could you leave notes on what you do, please?
Best wishes,
Stef

Parents today are wealthier than their parents and they want their children to have more than what they had. Yet parents often 21 to give their children what they had when they were young.
For example, today’s generations of children mostly have their own private 22 with a television, their own cell phone, their own computer, and finally when th
ey are 23 enough they will even have their own cars. 24 all of these things, children do not 25 these gifts as much as previous generations did. 26 , children are often ___27__ just spoiled(被宠坏的) , and all these things give them 28 enjoyment when they really ne
ed some 29 to their own development. Finally, children 30 these short-term activities in order to fight against their boredom, and as a result of this, kids 31 shorter periods of attention with little 32 .
The obvious question that you may be asking is probably that: 33 patience is a virtue, then why don’t parents 34 it?
In today’s society, it is far easier to make children lose concentration than to teach
personal development 35 and that’s a common problem. For example, it is much easier for parents to buy a new toy or turn on the television for their children than to 36 their curiosity (好奇)in a natural way. This strong 37 to know the world will lead them through self-learning, by which they would slowly value the 38 of hard work and patience.
Basically, the easiest method for parents to teach patience to their children is not by 39 them things, but by giving their children an opportunity to learn what they are interested in. Thus, parents can teach their children the same 40 lessons that they have painfully learned too. The point is, realize what they lack and take action immediately.

Dr. Michael Prager, a leading Botox expert, said that a growing number of women are developing something called “computer face”. He also mentioned that professionals who worked long hours in front of a screen were ending up with saggy jowls(颚骨下垂),“turkey neck” and deep-set wrinkles(皱纹) on their forehead and around their eyes.
The Botox expert said that, of all his clients, office workers were most likely to show premature (过早的)signs of aging. “ If you are one of the unfortunate people who frown(皱眉)while you are concentrating on the screen then, over time, you will inevitably(不可避免地) end up with frown lines.’’ Dr. Prager said. “What is perhaps more surprising is the number of women with saggy jowls because they are sitting in one position for so long. If you spend most of the time looking down then the neck muscles shorten and go saggy, eventually giving you a second neck.”
Dr. Prager, who has a practice near Harley Street in London, said he encourages his clients(客户) to put a mirror next to their computer so they can see if they are frowning at the screen. “When people are stressed or thinking hard about something, then they will often put on a ‘grumpy(脾气暴躁的)face’ without even knowing what they are doing. When my clients put a mirror next to their desk, they are often shocked by the angry, frowning face which stares back at them.”
He said, “The women I am seeing at the moment have only been using computers at work for the last decade or so. But women in their 20s have grown up with them and use them for every single task. I think the problem is going to become much, much worse. In another ten years, they could be looking quite awful.”
Dr. Prager said there were several simple steps which could avoid “computer face” such as regular screen breaks and stretching the neck muscles. And, of course, there was always Botox. He said that , after a couple of sessions of Botox, the habit of “grumpy face” could be broken.

D. Second neck and stressed muscles
14. Why does Dr. Prager suggest a mirror for his clients?
A. To be aware of their “computer face”
B. To see if they have got a second neck
C. To make sure their make-up is perfect
D. To find more signs of premature aging
15. From the last 2 paragraphs, we can know that_____

In Canada, volunteering is an extreme common thing. Recently I’m volunteering for a charity, help the teachers at a school. I’m in the charge of a class of small children. One teacher asked me to help a girl draw a picture, that was based on the word “grateful”. As I was drawing with him in the classroom, I found it interesting work with children. When class was over, I felt exciting and even proud of which I’d done. In my opinion, being helpful is one of the most important quality to have. Volunteering offer us a chance to develop social skills and gain valuable experience.

Key 1: Keep clean
36 . People should wash their hands often — before touching food and while they are preparing food. People should wash all surfaces and equipment used for preparing food.
Key 2: Separate raw (生的) and cooked
Raw foods should not touch prepared foods. 37 .
Key 3: 38
People should cook eggs and meat especially carefully. These foods may carry more micro-organisms (微生物) than other foods. Food like soup must be boiled for at least a minute to make it be cooked completely. It is also important that people re-heat cooked food completely.
Key 4: Keep food at safe temperatures
When people finish eating, they should keep the left food in a refrigerator below 5℃and shouldn’t store it for too long. At room temperature, about 20℃, the amount of micro-organisms can increase very quickly. But temperatures above 60℃ or below 5℃ control the growth of micro-organisms. 39 .

Every morning, many girls in the African country of Zimbabwe rise with the sun and go to fetch water

I got into the teaching profession by choice. I was then in 9th grade, when my mathematics teacher asked me to take a class for a few students to whom the subject seemed difficult. And believe me, I enjoyed the teaching. I never knew teaching would be so interesting. I loved my freshmen and was delighted to teach my so-called students who came up with lots of good questions.
After my post graduation, I worked as a software developer with a public sector(部门) in Bangalore for a few years. But I realized that no job could provide me the satisfaction that I experienced while teaching and training. In fact, I feel it was a timely realization for me to choose the teaching profession. I applied to a few colleges, and finally I was chosen as a “Lecturer”, and I had to lecture graduate and post-graduate students in a college.
On the first day, I was nervous thinking that I had to teach the senior classes. But now I can say that taking
lectures was one of the best experiences of my life. I was a Computer Science and Information Technology Lecturer, but I tried to help my students with subjects that were not within my domain(范围). It was a new feeling to me every morning before going to the classes. I used to feel energized and excited thinking that the class would be lit up with bright faces to greet me, “Good morning, Madam”.
To me each day was a new beginning, with new feelings, new experiences and new queries(疑问). I loved to explore their young minds, read their inquisitive faces when a particular topic seemed tough. It was very challenging to motivate them to take part in the classroom, think critically, question and also respect others’ point of view. Though few things never seemed easy, it was very exciting to assure them that they really can. That is the reason, I love to teach.

The United Kingdom has voted to leave the European Union, a historic decision that will reshape the nation^ place in the world and is already upsetting governments across the continent. The surprising turn of events caused a fall in the financial markets, with the value of the British pound and stock prices falling.
The campaign to leave the EU won by 52 percent to 48 percent. More than 17 million people in the UK—made up of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland — voted to sever ties with the EU, a Political and economic partnership comprising 28 countries across Europe. About 16.1 million voted to remain.
The result raises serious questions about the future of the EU. The British go out from the union-nicknamed Brexit — is just the latest in a series of crises to annoy the EU. The alliance is already dealing with economic bad results from the global financial collapse of 2008, along with a record arrival refugees to Europe due in part to Syria’s civil war.
Some British citizens believe the EU has too much influence over Britain’s authority and that the country’s industries would be more profitable on their own. Others want Britain to reclaim control of its borders and reduce how many people enter the country to work They say the EU’s open-border policy allows unlimited numbers of immigrants to come in from poorer nations—and that those people take jobs from British workers. Those who campaigned to stay in the EU, meanwhile, argued that the UK and its economy is stronger within the alliance.
Now the UK will become the first nation to leave the European Union. The decision is a huge blow the alliance because Britain is one of its most powerful members. “The main impact will be massive disorder in the EU system for the next two years,” said Thierry de Montbrial, of the French Institute of International Relations. “There will be huge political change costs on how to solve the British exit.” The decision could also have a domino effect, he warned, with other countries following the UK’s lead and exiting the EU.
1.What does the underlined word “sever” mean?
A. Settle down. B. Take over.
C. Break off. D. Build up.
2.Most British wanted to leave the EU because they believe .
A. they can help immigrants to create more job chances
B. they expect the EU to have an open border policy
C. they want to set up their own authority
D. they will lead a better life on their own
3.What did Brexit make Thierry worry about?
A. More countries will do as the UK does.
B. Scotland win their independence from the EU.
C. The EU will pay back more money to the UK.
D. The economy in the EU will suffer loss.
4.What might be the most suitable title for the passage?
A. The UK Wins Independence with Votes
B. The UK Votes to Leave the European Union
C. The UK Makes a Historic Decision Again
D. The UK Remains Separated from the World

We may see the same scene everywhere in our life: in subway stations, restaurants, elevators and so on, people are watching their cell phones. From a family reunion to a date with a friend, people couldn’t stop checking their twitter and facebook on the cell phones and ignoring the persons in front completely, Phubbing(低头症) not only involves young people, but also the elderly and kids.
“Phubbing” is a new term which comes from the words“phone” and “snub”(冷落). It describes the habit of snubbing someone in favor of a cell phone. The word “phubbing” was included in the Australian National Dictionary in 2012. Obviously, the indifference (冷漠) and rudeness of the information age are spreading globally.
A Stop Phubbing campaign website has been set up. You can find the slogan of the website as follows: “stop twittering, stop posting photos…enjoy your food, enjoy the music and respect others.”
Phubbing appears harmless. However, it does influence our life. Jimmy, an epicure(美食家), wrote in his blog: “I can no longer focus on what I am eating since I started twittering. My skill of food photography has improved very fast, while my interest in food drops as a result.” Let us put down our cell phones and re-enjoy the real taste of our food and the warmth of interpersonal communication.
