A volcanic eruption(喷发) in Iceland has sent ash across northern Europe. Airlines have stopped or changed the flights across the Atlantic Ocean, leaving hundreds of passengers stuck in the airports.

Grimsvotn is one of the largest and most active volcanoes in Europe. What makes Grimsvotn different is that it lies under a huge glacier(冰川) of ice up to 12 meters thick. The hot volcano heats up the ice above it, which then forms a layer() of water between the glacier and the volcano.

This layer of water puts pressure on the volcano, keeping it stable(稳定). As the water flows out from under the glacier, the pressure lifts. The lava(岩浆) from the volcano then comes up to the surface. This is exactly what happened today.

Now, airlines have to make changes to their flights so as not to fly through the clouds of volcanic ash. According to KLM one of Europe’ s biggest airlines, airplanes cannot go under the cloud or over it. Going through the cloud can result in ash getting stuck in the airplane' s engines, causing damage to the plane.

The eruption has also caused problems for animals in Iceland. The volcano left ash and sharp glass-like rocks all over the countryside. Farmers are keeping their animals inside to stop them from eating ash-covered glass or the sharp object.

Louis Pasteur was born in Dole, France on December 27, 1822. His family was poor, and during his early education Pasteur was an ordinary student who enjoyed art and singing. However , when Pasteur was exposed to science as a teenager, he knew he had found his career.

In 1838, Pasteur went to college to become a science teacher. He then became a chemistry professor at the University of Strasbourg. He got married in 1849 and had five children. However, three died young from typhoid fever (伤寒症). It was the deaths of his children that drove Pasteur to investigate the infectious disease in order to find a cure.

During Pasteur’s time, people believed that bacteria(细菌) appeared due to “spontaneous generation(自然发生)” . They thought that the bacteria just appeared out of nowhere. Pasteur carried out experiments to see if this was true. Through his experiments he proved that germs were living things that came from other living things. They didn’t just spontaneously appear. This was a major discovery in the study of biology and earned Pasteur the title of Father of Germ Theory.

As Pasteur learned more about bacteria, he began to think they may be the cause of diseases in humans. When the French silk market was threatened by a disease to silkworms (), Pasteur decided to investigate. He discovered that this disease was caused by germs. By killing them from the silkworm farms, he was able to cease the disease and save the French silk business.

Today Louis Pasteur is known as one of the most important scientists in history. His discoveries led to an understanding of bacteria and diseases that has helped save millions and millions of lives.

For anyone still doubting the belief that our emotions impact our physical health, a new study from New Zealand should be able to settle the matter. It reports that the physical wounds of healthy seniors healed more quickly if they wrote about their most upsetting experiences.

This confirms the results of a 2010 study, and extends those findings to cover older adults-a group that is likely to suffer wounds (as from surgery), and one with less access to other ways of lowering tension (such as exercise).

Reported in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, a research team led by the University of Auckland's Elizabeth Broadbent made a study featuring 50 healthy adults ranging in age from 64 to 97. They were assigned to write for 20 minutes per day for three consecutive(连续的) days.

Half were asked to write about the most upsetting experience in their life, describing their deepest thoughts, feelings, and emotions about the events, ideally not previously shared with others. The others were asked to write about their daily activities without mentioning emotions, opinions or beliefs.

Two weeks after the third day of writing, all participants received a standard 4mm skin biopsy(皮下活体组织检查) on their inner arm. The very tiny wounds caused by the biopsy were photographed regularly over the following days to determine the rate at which they healed.

On the 11th day after the biopsy, the wounds completely healed on 76.2 percent of those who had done the expressive writing. That was true of only 42.1 percent of those who had written about everyday activities.

"The biological and psychological mechanisms behind this effect remain unclear," the researchers wrote, noting that those who had done the expressive writing did not report lower stress levels or fewer depressive symptoms than the others in the control group. Even if they weren’t consciously aware of feeling more relaxed or positive, the expressive writing appeared to have caused some sort of bodily reaction-probably involving their immune systems-that hastened their recovery.

32. What was the difference between the two groups of participants in the study?

A. When they wrote.  B. Where they wrote.C. What they wrote about.   D. How often they wrote.

33. According to the text, the experiment lasted.

A. speeded   B. showed   C. limited      D. ruined

35. What would be the best title of the text?

A. Sharing with others can reduce stress.B. Skin biopsies are likely to cause wounds.

C. Expressive writing heals physical wounds.D. Upsetting experiences impact our emotions.

Dear Mr. Li,

I’m very sorry to have missed the first two lessons this morning. I got up early as usually in the morning, but when I was ready to leave I find my bicycle’s front tyre(轮胎)flat. I wanted to take bus or taxi to school, and I didn’t have any money with me. I had to look for a place along the street to get my bicycle repairing. Unluckily, there were not any bicycle repair shops where were open in the early morning. So I had to walk to school, carried my bicycle all the way. That’s how I was late for school. Please don’t worry with my lessons, Mr. Li. I will make up for it and turn to teachers for help if necessary.

Yours,

Wang Hui

I had been rather proud of myself when my friends and family got the ticket, whether it was for speeding, parking or stop sign violations (违反). It was something that happened to others. But last Friday I joined the club.

I was asked to do a new project last week. On Friday morning on my way to work, I suddenly remembered that I had spent the past six weeks without considering that I had a week’s vacation planned during that time. I was very disappointed with myself for not remembering it.

The truth is that I was not paying enough attention to my driving and I did not come to a complete stop at the stop sign in front of a school. I was so distracted (思想不集中的) that I didn’t even notice I had a policeman on my tail(尾巴) with his lights flashing. Finally I looked in my mirror and caught on.

The policeman was rude and took my papers. Fortunately, I had everything up to date and since I had never had a ticket before, there was nothing for him to do but write me a ticket. While I was sitting there in the seat of “shame”, I felt bad. If I had been that distracted and a child had run onto the road, perhaps I would have not reacted as well as I could have. It was a wake-up call.

People at work asked me if I tried to talk my way out of it(为自己开脱). Frankly, it never occurred to me. I felt sorry. Now I no longer have a clean driving record. Please be careful out there, as a moment’s distraction can lead to tragedy.

Popeye the Sailor first became a popular cartoon in the 1930s.The sailor in that cartoon ate lots of spinach to make him strong. People watched him, and they began to buy and eat a lot more spinach. Popeye helped sell 33 percent more spinach than before! Spinach became a necessary part of many people’s diets. Even some children who hated the taste began to eat the vegetable.

Many people thought that the iron in spinach made Popeye strong, but this is not true. Spinach does not have any more iron than any other green vegetable.

People only thought spinach had a lot of iron because the people who studied the food made a mistake. In the 1890s, a group of people studied what was inside vegetables. This group said that spinach had ten times more iron than it did. The group wrote the number wrong, and everyone accepted it.

Today, we know that the little iron there is in spinach cannot make a difference in how strong a person is. However,  spinach does have something else which the body needsfolic acid.

It is interesting to point out that folic acid can help make a person strong. Maybe it was really the folic acid that made Popeye strong all along.

Do you love the holidaysbut hate the pounds that follow? You are not alone. Holidays are times for feasting and celebrating. Many people are worried about their weight. With proper planningthoughit is possible to keep normal weight during the holidays. Whether it is celebrating at the office party or sitting down for the traditional family dinnerregard eating as a time for tasting a variety of the foods. The idea is to enjoy the holidays but not to eat too much. You don't have to turn away from the foods that you enjoy.

Here are some tips for preventing weight gain and maintaining physical fitness

Don't skip meals. Before you leave homehave a smalllow-fat meal or snack. This may help to avoid getting too excited before delicious foods.

Control portions. Use a small plate (about 10 inches) and put aside the large ones that may encourage you to “load up.” You should be most comfortable eating an amount of food about the size of your fist. Once you have your “tasting” servingmove away from the buffet(自助餐). Doing so will make it less tempting to be eating constantly as your appetite is inspired by the sight of food.

Begin with soup and fruit or vegetables. Fill up beforehand on water-based soup and raw fruit or vegetables. Or drink a large glass of water before you eat to help you feel full.

Stick to physical activity. Don't let exercise take a break during the holidays. A 20-minute walk after a meal can help burn off excess calories.

Avoid high-fat foods. Dishes that look oily or creamy may have a large amount of fat. Choose lean meats. Fill your plate with salad and green vegetables. Use lemon juice instead of dessert or butter.

1Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

AYou had better turn your attention away from delicious foods.

BDrinking some water or soup before eating helps you eat less.

CHolidays are happy days with pleasure but they may bring weight problems.

DPhysical exercise can reduce the chance of putting on weight.

2Which of the following CANNOT help lose weight according to the passage?

ALean meats.                              BDessert or butter.

CRaw fruit or vegetables.                    D Physical exercise.

3Many people can't control their weight after the holidays mainly because they _______.

Acan't help being tempted to eat constantly    Btake part in too many parties

Cenjoy delicious foods                     Dcan't help turning away from the foods

Daniel Anderson, a famous psychologist, believes it’s important to distinguish television’s influences on children from those of the family. We tend to blame TV, he says, for problems it doesn’t really cause, overlooking our own roles in shaping children’s minds.

One traditional belief about television is that it reduces a child’s ability to think and to understand the world. While watching TV, children do not merely absorb words and images (影像). Instead, they learn both explicit(表面的) and hidden meanings from what they see. Actually, children learn early the psychology of characters in TV shows. Furthermore, as many teachers agree, children understand far more when parents watch TV with them, explaining new words and ideas. Yet, most parents use an educational program as a chance to park their kids in front of the set and do something in another room.

Another argument against television is that it replaces reading as a form of entertainment. But according to Anderson, the amount of time spent watching television is not related to reading ability. TV doesn’t take the place of reading for most children; it takes the place of similar sorts of recreation, such as listening to the radio and playing sports. Things like parents’ educational background have a stronger influence on a child’s reading. “A child’s reading ability is best predicted by how much a parent reads.” Anderson says.

Traditional wisdom also has it that heavy television-watching lowers IQ scores and affects school performance. But here, too, Anderson notes that no studies have proved it. In fact, research suggests that it’s the other way around. “If you’re smart young, you’ll watch less TV when you’re older,” Anderson says. Yet, people of lower IQ tend to be lifelong television viewers.

For years researchers have attempted to show that television is dangerous to children. However, by showing that television promotes none of the dangerous effects as conventionally (传统地)believed, Anderson suggests that television cannot be condemned(谴责) without considering other influences.

32. An educational program is best watched by a child _________.

A. on his own                                                  B. with other kids

C. with his parents                                           D. with his teachers

33. Which of the following is most related to children’s reading ability?

A. Radio-listening                                             B. Television-watching

C. Parents’ reading list                                      D. Parents’ reading background

34. Anderson believed that _________.

A. the more a child watches TV, the smarter he is

B. the younger a child is, the more he watches TV

C. the smarter a child is, the less likely he gets addicted to TV

D. the less a child watches TV, the better he performs at school

35. What is the main purpose of the passage?

A. To advise on the educational use of TV.          B. To describe TV’s harmful effects on children.

C. To explain traditional views on TV influences. D. To present Anderson’s unconventional ideas.

Behind most of the bad things we do to our bodies as adults, eating more than we should is the idea we carry with us from childhood. On one hand, we assume that we are indestructible. On the other hand, we think that any damage we impose on ourselves can be undone when wβfinally clean up our act.

If the evidence for how wrong the first idea is isn’t apparent when you stand naked in front of the mirror, just wait. But what if you eat right and drop all your bad habits? Is there still time to repair the damage?

To a surprising degree, the answer is yes. Over the past five years, scientists have collected a wealth of data about what happens when aging people with bad habits decide to turn their lives around.

The heartening conclusion: the body has an amazing ability to heal itself, provided the damage is not too great.

The effects of some bad habits-smoking, in particular-can haunt you for decades. But the damage from other habits can be largely healed.

Any time you improve your behavior and make lifestyle changes, they make a difference from that point on.says Dr. Jeffey Koplan.Maybe not right away. Its like slamming on the brakes. You do need a certain distance.”

But the distance can be remarkably short. Consider the recent announcements from the front lines of medical research: ---A study concluded that women who consume as little as two servings of fish a week cut their risk of suffering a stroke to half that of women who eat less than one serving of fish a month. ---The day you quit smoking, the carbon monoxide levels in your body drop dramatically. Within weeks, your blood becomes less sticky and your risk of dying from a heart attack starts to decline ... Adopting healthy habits won’t cure all that bothers you, of course. But doctors believe that many chronic diseases-from high blood pressure to heart disease and even some cancers-can be warded off with a few sensible changes in lifestyle.

Not sure where to start? Surprisingly, it doesn’t matter, since one positive change usually leads to another. Make enough changes, and you'll discover you’ve adopted a new way of life.

1Most people with bad habits of eating more than they should believe that        .

Atheir bodies cannot be damaged by the bad habits

Bthey can force themselves to clean up the had habits later

Ctheir bodies can heal all the damage without the help from outside

Dthey can never change the habits that have developed for decades

2The evidence against the assumption that we are indestructible        .

Ais seldom apparent                                     Bis clearly shown in the mirror

Cis still a question                                        Dwill appear obvious sooner or later

3According to the recent announcements        .

Awomen should eat as much fish as possible

Bmen don’t have to eat as much fish as women

Ceating a little more fish can improve women’s health

Dwomen are at a higher risk of suffering a stroke than men

4It is implied in the passage that        .

Athe blood of smokers is more sticky than that of non-smokers

Bchronic diseases can be cured ifwe drop our habit of smoking

Csmokers have lower levels of carbon monoxide than non-smokers

Dsmokers will be unlikely to die from heart attack if they quit smoking

Taking good notes is a time-saving skill that will help you to become a better student in several ways.  36   Second, your notes are excellent materials to refer to when you are studying for a test. Third, note-taking offers variety to your study time and helps you to hold your interest.

You will want to take notes during classroom discussions and while reading a textbook or doing research for a report.  37   Whenever or however you take notes, keep in mind that note-taking is a selective process. 38

The following methods may work best for you.

●Read the text quickly to find the main facts and ideas in it.

●Carefully read the text and watch for words that can show main points and

supporting facts.

● Write your notes in your own words.

39

● Note any questions or ideas you may have about what was said or written.

As you take notes, you may want to use your own shorthand(速记). When you do, be sure that you understand your symbols and that you use them all the time. 40

A. Use words, not complete sentences.

B. There are three practical note-taking methods.

C. You must write your notes on separate paper.

D. Otherwise, you may not be able to read your notes later.

E. You will also want to develop your own method for taking notes.

F. That means you must first decide what is important enough to include in your notes.

G. First, the simple act of writing something down makes it easier for you to understand and remember it.
