I wandered into the small store where I usually buy milk, when the store owner received a call from a customer. The customer and his wife had shopped there several months earlier. He noticed that his wife really liked one thing in the store, so he wanted to buy it as a surprise.

But the customer was in Tennessee, far away from the store which was in Maine. What’s more, he had been to the store several months earlier, and it was difficult to believe that the store owner would remember him, or what he was looking for.

The store owner took a few close-up photos with her camera, and e-mailed them to the customer on the computer. The customer looked at the photos, decided which one he wanted. They talked and discussed a price over the phone. She took care of the credit card transaction (交易) online, and promised the gift would be shipped out that afternoon.

The store owner was really smart. She was willing to push herself to find new ways to make the transaction actually happen. And it did work. However, it was the first time she had ever done it.

I was amazed that the store owner discovered a creative solution that could lead to a new way of doing business. I was impressed by what she did—so easily, but how difficult it is for many of us to make that leap(飞跃,跳跃). I’m not just talking about technology, but about learning how to adapt to change. Most people hate or fear change unless they get to know exactly what change needs to be made. However, we should realize that challenge and opportunity go hand in hand.

Language-learners who say they never or hardly ever use dictionaries often speak English well but usually write poorly, because they make many mistakes.

The students who use dictionaries most do not learn especially well either. The ones who look up every new word do not read fast. So they do not have time to read much. Those who use small two-language dictionaries have the worst problems. Their dictionaries often give only one or two words as translations of English. But one English word often has many translations in a foreign language and one foreign word has many translations in English.

The most successful students are those who use large college edition dictionaries with about 100,000 words but do not use them too often. When they are reading, these students first try to get the general idea and understand new words from the context. Then they reread and use the dictionary to look up only key words that they still do not understand. They use dictionaries more for writing. If they are not sure how to spell a word, or divide it into syllables (音节), they always use a dictionary. Also, if they think a noun might have an unusual plural form(复数形式), they check these in a dictionary.

13According to the passage, which of the following is right?

 A. Students who never use dictionary can speak well and write well.

 B. Whatever new words you meet while reading, just look them up in the dictionary.

 C. Small two-language dictionaries are bad for learning English.

 D. An English word only has one translation.

14This passage mainly tells us        .

 A. that students shouldn’t use small two-language dictionaries

 B. what were the defects (缺点) of small two-language dictionaries

 C. why students should use large college edition dictionaries

 D. what dictionary students should choose and how to use it

15Which is not mentioned(提到) in this passage?

 C. How to improve spoken English.        D. How to practice reading fast.

                            The Man Behind Blue Jeans

Levis Strauss was born in 1829 in Bavaria, Germany. He was the fifth of six children. His father sold dry goods from door to door. ( Dry goods include many different things: fabric, thread, scissors, combs, buttons, yarn, etc.)

In 1845, his father died. All six children decided to go the United States. Two of Levis Strauss’ brothers started a dry goods company in New York City. His sister Fanny and her husband started a similar business in San Francisco. Strauss decided to go to the southeastern part of the United States. For eight years, he walked along the country roads selling dry goods from door to door----just like his father in Bavaria. In 1853, Strauss decided to move to California, (At that time, thousands of people traveled to California to look for gold.) On the way to California, Strauss sold all of his dry goods. At last he had only some canvas left.

In California, Strauss tried to sell the canvas to the gold miners. He said they could make tents with the canvas. But they were not interested in canvas for tents. Strauss did not know what to do with the canvas. Then, he had an idea. Strauss could see that the miners needed new pants. There were holes in their pants because the fabric wasn’t strong. He decided to make the canvas into pants. They called them “Levi’s”. Later, Strauss stopped using canvas and used a different fabric. It was a heavy cotton fabric----the same kind people wear today.

For the first time, Chinese astronauts can enjoy tea in space, where drinking is not an easy thing to do, considering the gravity-free situation.

During the month-long trip aboard the Shenzhou XI spaceship, which returned to earth this month, astronauts JinHaipeng and Chen Dong revealed how they drank tea on a TV show. They used a specially made tea cup and a special Pu’er cream to drink tea while standing upside down.

The Pu’er tea cream they drink is produced in Yunnan province, which is known for its pu’er tea industry.

“Drinking water in space means the astronauts squeeze the water from a special bag. Drinking hot tea is harder,” said Jiang Xiaowei, vice-chairman of the Yunnan space biotechnology association. The difficult part of drinking tea in space is that there should not be anything left after the tea dissolves in water, Jiang said. Also, the solubility(溶解度)of the tea should be low since water in space can only be warmed to 60 degrees centigrade at most.

The tea cream the astronauts drank is produced by Kunming-based Gongrunxiang Tea Industry Corp. It was founded in 1993 by the Kunming branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Zhang Guanghui, president of Gongrunxiang, said that the company aims to produce a tea cream that’s a safe, healthy and convenient tea product. Tea products are often reported to be polluted by pesticide residues and heavy metals. “I never imagined that one day our tea cream would help astronauts to drink tea in space,” Zhang said, adding that drinking tea in space can be seen as a turning point for the floundering(挣扎的) Pu’er tea industry.

For a long time there’s been little added value for tea products because it’s an industry heavily dependent on individual tea planters.

“For us, astronauts’ drinking tea in space means our biotechnology applied to the tea industry has had some achievements,” Zhang said.

Wang Pinghua, deputy director of the agriculture department of Yunnan province, said that in the future, more tea producers will use technology to upgrade the tea industry.

59. We can learn from the passage that ______.

A. the astronauts revealed how they drank tea after returning to the earth

B. astronauts are able to enjoy tea in space for the first time in history

C. the technology applied to the tea industry might help the astronauts out

D. the tea cream is reported to be polluted by pesticide and heavy metals

60. Which is NOT the reason why it’s difficult for the astronauts to drink hot tea in space?

A. There should be nothing left after the tea dissolves.

B. The solubility of the tea should remain unchanged.

C. They have to use a kind of specially made tea cup.

D. Drinking is very hard in the gravity-free situation.

61. What is the best title for the passage?

A. Drinking Tea in Outer Space             B. A Turning Point for the Tea Industry

C. The Month-long Trip in Space                  D. Time to Upgrade the Tea Industry
