Everybody in this world is different from one another. But do you know that understanding differences can help you better manage your money?

As we grow up, we gradually develop a set of our own values or beliefs. These are influenced by society, our family, the education we receive and so on. Once this value system is set up, it’s not easy to change later in life.

Financial experts say that everyone also has their own belief of how to manage their finances. This is part of our value system and it has a great impact on the way we look after our money.

According to our different values, experts put us in three categories. They are: the ant, the cricket and the snail.

The ant—works first

Just like ants who work heart and soul in summer in order to store food for winter, these people don’t care about enjoying the moment. They work very hard and save money they earn so that they can enjoy life when they get old and retire. The ant loves to save but they could make more out of their money if they were willing to invest(投资) in some funds and stocks with low risk.

The cricket—fun first

The cricket wants to enjoy everything now and doesn’t think too much about the future. They even borrow money when they really want something. Many young people now belong to this group. These people have little savings. When they get old, they might have problems. They should learn to save and buy insurance.

The snail—lives under pressure

The snail refers to people who make life difficult for themselves. They take big long-term loans (贷款)from the bank in order to buy things such as luxury(奢华的) houses. They are happy to take big loans even though they are not sure they can afford it. This can cause problems in the future. They should plan more carefully.

25. .People with the character of the snail would like to _______.

A. enjoy life at the moment without thinking much about the future

B. live a luxury life at all costs

C. put work before everything else.

D. take the risk of investing a large sum of money

26. Our beliefs and values are affected by the following except ______.

A. society               B.  money         C. education         D. our family

27. This passage mainly talks about _______.

A. the reaction between man and insects

B. the problems with dealing with money

C. the insects in nature

D. the spending nature of people

 28. Which of the following has the character that the author prefers?

This year’s winners of the Wenjin Book Award, announced by the National Library of China on April 23, are from three main categories  children’s books, popular science and social science titles.

The annual awards announced on World Book Day are meant to build a bridge between readers, writers and publishers to create a conductive feeling for reading books and fulfill the duty of libraries to promote culture and educate the people.

Started in 2004 and first celebrated in 2005, the award’s group of judges is drawn from a pool of great scholars and journalists.

Zhang He, a senior culture reporter from the People’s Daily, says the awards are considered the most honorable in China’s book world because it fully focuses on the quality of the books.

Every year, the award selects 10 books from those published within the past 12 months, covering three areas: humanities and social science, popular science and children’s book. The judging group also makes dozens of book recommendations for the public.

From 2005 to 2014, with a break in 2012, judging groups selected 99 books and recommended some 421 others from a pool of 6,000 titles.

Critics (评论员) praised the winning books, especially Zhongguo Gudai Wuzi Wenhua, or Tangible Culture in Ancient China, published by the Zhonghua Book Company in July 2014. Based on a series of the writer Sun Ji’s lectures on Chinese culture, the book has 10 chapters that attempt to answer people’s questions about various aspects of ancient Chinese people’s lives. Chen Li, a writer and one of the judges says that the book has the “newest, most comprehensive and systematic description” on Chinese culture.

Eating processed meat can cause cancer, World Health Organization experts said Monday.

Processed meat is meat that has been preserved by curing, salting, smoking, drying or canning. Experts from the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon, France, studied 800 cases. IARC researchers linked processed meat, such as hot dogs and ham, to bowel cancer, as well as pancreatic cancer and prostate cancer.

The IARC has included processed meat in its group 1 list, for which there is “sufficient evidence” of links to cancer. Tobacco, asbestos, and diesel fumes are also on the group 1 list. WHO experts also called red meat, including beef, lamb and pork, “probably” carcinogenic (致癌的) to humans.

Dr. Kurt Straif is with the IARC. He said in a statement that the risk of cancer increases with the amount of meat a person eats. A person who consumes 50 grams of processed meat per day – about two pieces of bacon-increases his or her risk of bowel cancer by 18 percent. Health experts in some countries already advise against eating large amounts of red and processed meat. But those advisories had been centered on the increased risks of heart disease and obesity.

Meat industry groups are protesting the WHO study. They say that meat is part of a balanced diet. They also say the causes of cancer are broad, and include environmental and lifestyle factors.

The WHO report cited the Global Burden of Disease project, which estimates that diets high in processed meat lead to 34,000 cancer deaths per year worldwide.

25. According to the text, which of the following does not belong to red meat?

A. pork      B. chicken      C. beef       D. lamb

26. In Dr. Kurt’s view, which of the following statement is TRUE?

A. Meat is absolutely harmful to people’s health.

B. Eating meat can cause bowel cancer for sure.

C. A person will not develop cancer if he or she consumes less than 50 grams of processed meat a day.

D. The more a person eats red or processed meat, the more likely he is to suffer from bowel cancer.

27. The main idea of the last but one paragraph is ________.

A. Meat industries’ protest against the study of WHO on red and processed meat.

B. Red meat and processed meat are considered a balanced diet by some meat industries.

C. There are some other factors causing cancer.

D. Bad environment and unhealthy lifestyle may result in cancer to some extent.

28. The best title of the text might be ________.

A. Factors Causing Cancers

B. A New WHO Study on Meat

C. WHO: Red and Processed Meat Can Cause Cancer

D. Meat Industry’s Protest against the Study on Meat

In 1929, a peasant in Sichuan Province uncovered jade (玉器) and stone artifacts(手工艺品) while repairing a ditch(沟渠) located about 24 miles from Chengdu. But their significance wasn’t understood until 1986, when archaeologists unearthed two pits(大坑) of Bronze Age treasures. The discovery suggests an impressive technicality(手工技艺), said Peter Keller, a geologist and president of the Bowers Museum in California, which is currently hosting an exhibit of some of these treasures.

The treasures came from a lost civilization, now known as the Sanxingdui, a city on the banks of the Minjiang River.

“It’s a big mystery,” said Keller, who is not involved in the current study.

“Archaeologists now believe that the culture disappeared sometime between 3,000 and 2,800 years ago,” Niannian fan, a river science researcher at Tsinghua University in Chengdu, China, said.

“The current explanations for why it disappeared are war and flood, but both are not very convincing,” Fan told Live Science.

But about 14 years ago, archaeologists found the remains of another ancient city called Jinsha near Chengdu. The Jinsha site, though it contained none of the bronzes of Sanxingdui, did have a gold crown covered with fish, arrows and birds similar to golden objects found at Sanxingdui. That has led some scholars to believe that the people from Sanxingdui may have relocated to Jinsha.

Fan wondered whether an earthquake may have caused landslides that dammed the river high up in the mountains and rerouted it to Jinsha. That catastrophe may have reduced Sanxingdui’s water supply, spurring its people to move.

And some historical records support their assumptions. In 1099 B.C., ancient writers recorded an earthquake in the capital of the Zhou Dynasty, in Shanxi Province, Fan said. Though that spot is roughly 250 miles from the historic site of Sanxingdui, the latter culture didn’t have writing at the time. So it’s possible the earthquake epicenter(震中) was actually close to Sanxingdui-but it just wasn’t recorded there.

Around the same time, geological sediment(沉积物) suggest massive flooding occurred, and the later-han Dynasty document The Chronicles of the Kings of Shu records ancient floods pouring from a mountain in a spot that suggests the flow being rerouted, Fan said.

Together, the findings hint that major earthquake triggered a landslide that dammed the river, rerouting its flow and reducing water flow to Sanxingdui, Fan said.

D. some findings support the idea that an earthquake caused a landslide, which dammed the river, rerouting its flow and reducing water flow to Sanxingdui
