A pleasant surprise
For a long time, I had been looking for a piano of my own to practise on. There was a piano shop on the street along which I walked every day to school. Whenever I passed the shop, I would stop, looking at the beautiful piano standing in the comer of the shop window. How I had been dreaming, day and night to possess a piano like that!
Unfortunately, my father was just a clerk. Times were tough during the Depression, and there were five mouths to feed, besides buying coal and wood for the stove. In order to save money, even on cold winter days, my father would walk the seven miles every day to get to work. No he could never afford to buy me an expensive piano. Though he knew I wanted to play that piano so much» buying it was an extravagance (奢侈品) well beyond our family's income.
One day after school, I went as usual to the shop window to look at the piano. However, to my surprise and disappointment, the piano had gone. I should not have been surprised as others had the right to buy it, if they could afford to. Tears filled my eyes when I thought of not being able to sec that piano any more.
Disappointed, helpless and sad, I wandered aimlessly up and down the street. After about an hour. I returned home. I had just entered into our house, when I heard my mother calling me. I brushed away my tears and followed the sound of her voice into the dining-room.
Paragraph 1:
I could not believe my eyes.
Paragraph 2:
As soon as my father appeared, I hugged him tightly.
Who can think of the race between the tortoise and the rabbit when it comes to the greatest races? Sure, that race only took place in ancient Aesop's mind, but while the great modern races can teach us a lot about commitment, perseverance (毅力) and the virtues of having a rather large engine, "The Tortoise and the Rabbit" may tell us everything about animals and even vehicles on this planet.
In a study published this week, Adrian Bejan, a professor of mechanical engineering, concludes that no one should be surprised that the tortoise wins over the seemingly speedier rabbit. In fact, after analyzing the reported speeds of land-air-and-water-based animals, Bejan concludes that the world's well-known speedsters are actually among the slowest when their movements are averaged out over the course of a lifetime.
The study builds on Bejan's previous research showing that an animals speed increases with mass regardless of species. And that principle can also be extended to non-living things, like aircraft.
After studying data from historical airplane models, Bajan noted the speed of each model increased with its size, too. That doesn't sound right. What about the modern jet fighter? How is that relatively small craft not faster than a clumsy large transport plane?
Again, Bejan harks back to the tortoise. That transport plane spends lots of time in the air, moving regularly across long distances. The fighter jet, on the other hand, may fly across the sky occasionally, but-like the rabbit-it's often found resting on the ground.
The slow and steady transport plane wins the marathon of life.
But like so many good stories, Aesop's tale offers even more than a lesson in perseverance.
At one point, the rabbit asks the tortoise how he expects to win a race at such a slow pace.
The tortoise—ever focused—doesn't respond But it's the rabbits own words that provide the moment to reflect on, especially in modem times.

A crew of six teenage girls completed a nine-day sailing trip in the US recently, after braving seasickness and strong winds.
For the past three years, the Sea Cadet teenagers who set sail were all male. Roger Noakes, who captained the boat, said this was the first time he'd taken out an all-female crew.
The girls asked for an all-girls trip in August this year. The crew set sail along with three adults, Noakes and two Sea Cadet representatives. The original plan was for the girls to sail 24 hours a day in rotating shifts(轮流换班)along the coast and then return. Things turned out differently, however. “The first night was rough because the wind was really hard. The waves were going up and down,” said Abby Fairchild, 16. “Everybody got seasick.” Noakes gave the girls the option of just sailing in the bay and not going into open water. “But they decided they were going.”
The teenagers then sailed a long way overnight and slept in shifts. “We've learned everything from steering(掌舵)the boat itself to putting up the sails to cooking while we have rough seas, ” said 15-year-old Olivia Wilcox.
The teenagers stopped on land in Massachusetts. They didn't make it to their original destination in Maine, where they were supposed to have a celebratory dinner, due to the weather and winds. They said they weren't disappointed, however, as they'd learned a lot. “They learned about boating, and above all, they built confidence and character,” said Noakes.

In 1982, Steven Callahan was crossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank. He got into a life boat, but his supplies were 36 . His chances of surviving were small. 37 when three fishermen found him 76 days later, he was alive—much 38 than he was when he started, but alive.
His 39 of how he survived is fascinating. His cleverness — how he 40 to catch fish, how he evaporated(蒸发)sea water to 41 fresh water — is very interesting.
But the thing that 42 my eye was how he managed to keep himself going when all hope seemed lost, and there seemed no 43 in continuing the struggle. He was starved and 44 worn-out. Giving up would have seemed the only possible choice.
When people 45 these kinds of circumstances, they do something with their minds that gives them the courage to keep going. Many people in 46 desperate circumstances 47 in or go mad. Something the survivors do with their thoughts helps them find the courage to carry on 48 difficulties.
“I tell myself I can 49 it,” wrote Callahan in his book. “Compared to what others have been through, I’m fortunate. I tell myself these things over and over, 50 up courage…”
I wrote that down after I read it. It 51 me as something important. And I’ve told myself the same thing when my own goals seemed 52 off or when my problems seemed too terrible. And every time I’ve said it, I have always come back to my 53 .
The truth is, our circumstances are only bad 54 to something better. But others have been through the much worse, that is, in comparison with what others have been through, you’re fortunate. Tell this to yourself over and over again, and it will help you 55 through the rough situations with a little more courage.

Students typically speak of their experiences abroad as “life-changing” and count their international experience as one of the most rewarding features of their college careers. They not only advance themselves academically, but also acquire a mature view of our complex world. The benefits of studying abroad are many. Here are a few:
Special academic opportunities. For all students, but especially for those with an interest in area studies, attending a university abroad opens up a lot of academic options: courses not offered at Princeton, access to research materials, and contact with foreign scholars and researchers in particular fields of interest. Foreign environments can also provide a kind of living laboratory for original research that can only be conducted on-site.
Foreign language competency. The best way to become fluent in a foreign language is to go to a country where the language is spoken. The ability to read and talk in a foreign language benefits the scholarly work of all students and is a skill that is increasingly valued in all professions.
Preparation for careers with an international dimension. Today’s workplace is increasingly global and requires knowledge and experience that transcends (超出) national boundaries. Students who have studied abroad can prove to possible employers that they can handle themselves in new situations and have experience interacting with people from other backgrounds. Students may also develop professional relationships that continue long after the study abroad experience is over.
Cross-cultural competence and understanding. Spending time abroad allows you to test your abilities to cope with the challenges of living in another culture as a participant rather than a tourist. Living in another culture exposes you to different views about world events and your own country—deepening your understanding of your own culture, yourself, and the world.
Improve decision-making and problem-solving skills. Students studying abroad find themselves in new situations all the time. When students convey their needs and thoughts using new language skills, they gain confidence. These skills are helpful in other aspects of life, both personal and professional.
Test your interests. While studying abroad, especially on a field-based program, students can often take their interests on a more specific, applied direction. For example, they can try field research and interact with professionals working in fields of interest to them.
Make new contacts. Students form a large network of people while studying abroad. Some students may call upon their in-country professional contacts soon after the program’s conclusion; others stay in touch with homestay families for decades; still others form lifelong friendships with their peers(同龄人). These relationships can be deeply expanding.
