When in London by tube with mainly English passengers, we tend to sit together in total silence. However, when I traveled in China, people sitting next to me often asked me about my age, salary, and even marriage. They were also willing to introduce themselves as much possible.

On the first day I arrived in China, a Chinese professor invited me to dinner accompanied by his colleagues. After dinner, the professor paid for the meal alone, although the others also offered to pay for it. In Britain, we are accustomed to going “Dutch” while eating in a restaurant.

One day, at a friend's birthday party, I met with a foreign friend and offered my hand, meanwhile he bowed to me. We were both at a loss for a moment, but soon he seemed to be conscious of something and shook my hand naturally.

Recently, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage (SACH) issued a guidance to open cultural heritage buildings to the public, encouraging local governments, cultural heritage departments and organizations using or managing such buildings to better bring these buildings' cultural and social value into play, on the precondition of full protection. The SACH is clear that, no matter what their current conditions are, heritage buildings should be opened as much as possible.

In the past, due to insufficient preserving technologies and lack of funds, repairing work was seen as a major hassle, and thus opening the buildings to the public was difficult. Even famous heritage places like the Palace Museum in Beijing were plagued by such difficulties.

The National Outline (纲要) for Educational Reform and Development is bringing change to China's annual College Entrance Examination.

Currently, a student's score on the College Entrance Examination is the only factor determining his or her future. Universities set minimum scores in screening (筛选) prospective students, and only those whose scores are higher than the minimum are admitted. The outline suggests that universities choose students based on not only the results of the entrance exam, but also other criteria. For example, if a student's score is lower than his peers', but he shows great potential in the subject he's applying for, then the college might consider admitting him despite the lower general score.

The outline also proposes that some subjects, as a pilot project (试点项目), carry out multiple exams each year. This means that if a student fails an exam, he may have other chances at the exam in the coming semester. And to improve the system for higher education, China will gradually classify exams according to different kinds of education. The outline states that entrance exams for colleges and universities should be organized by the Ministry of Education, while exams for vocational schools (职业学校) should be organized by provincial educational departments.

"The National College Entrance Examination will be postponed for a month to July 7 and8 due to the novel coronavirus outbreak, "the Ministry of Education said.

Wang Hui, director of the ministry's Department of College Students Affairs, said the postponement is mainly to ensure students 'safety and the fairness of the exam. More than 10. 7million students have signed up to participate in this year's Gaokao, up by 400, 000 from last year, Wang said at a news conference.

"Gaokao concerns tens of millions of students, and the ministry must adopt the most cautious plan with the least amount of risk to protect their safety as well as that of the teachers."

Although senior high school students took online courses during the epidemic, many rural students who lacked Internet access felt disadvantaged, so the delay is to ensure they will have more time to prepare for the exam at school, he said.

Chinese people often compare the highly competitive exam to" crossing a narrow bridge", since for many students, especially those from rural areas, enrollment at a good university is a difficult but worthwhile challenge that could shape their future.

阅读下面短文, 根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

How could we possibly think that keeping animals in cages in unnatural environments - mostly for entertainment purposes is fair and respectful?

Zoo officials say they are concerned about animals. However, most zoos remain "collections" of interesting "things" rather than protective habitats. Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely, and far from their natural homes.

Zoos claim to educate people and save endangered species, but visitors leave zoos without having learned anything meaningful about the animals' natural behavior, intelligence, or beauty. Zoos keep animals in small spaces or cages, and most signs only mention the species' name, diet, and natural range (分布区). The animals' normal behavior is seldom noticed because zoos don't usually take care of the animals' natural needs.

The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and physical exercise. This results in unusual and self-destructive behavior called zoochosis (动物精神病). A worldwide study of zoos found that zoochosis is common among animals kept in small spaces or cages. Another study showed that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated head movements or biting cage bars, and bears spend 30 percent of their time walking back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.

Furthermore, most animals in zoos are not endangered. Captive breeding (圈养繁殖) of endangered big cats, Asian elephants, and other species has not resulted in their being sent back to the wild. Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding programs because they do not want people to worry about a species dying out. In fact, baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers. Haven't we seen enough competitions to name baby animals?

Actually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and put an end to the reasons why people kill them. Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect animals' natural habitats.

Look inside any family home in the evening, and you might see a typical enough scene: Mom and Dad, each on their own laptop or tablet, streaming movies, catching up on work or maybe answering emails on their smartphones. Meanwhile, one child is chatting online with one school friend while texting another. The other is playing a video game with a friend on the other side of the city at the same time. Each member of the family is totally absorbed in his or her own piece of technology.

According to some experts, the effect of technology on human relationships is worrying as technology becomes a substitute for face-to-face human relationships. It appears to be the case that many people would much rather spend time with their electronic gadgets(电子产品) than with one another. Young people say it is difficult to get their parents' attention and they have to compete with smartphones, tablets and other technology.

However, a report from the Pew Internet and American Life Project offers a more helpful and encouraging view, suggesting that far from replacing human contact, technology can actually better family relationships. Just over half of the 2,253 people surveyed agreed that technology had enabled them to increase their contact with distant family members and 47 percent said it had improved the communication with the people they lived with. Moreover, even the closest members of families need time away from each other at some point to seek their own interests. Family members who might otherwise have sat in separate rooms can now be in the same one while still occupying a different mental space.

Look back at our typical family scene above. Is it any different from four people reading their own books? Or is it driving families apart? Where technology will lead us remains to be seen. Yet there is no need to worry. As a matter of fact how it affects our family relationships depends on our attitude toward technology.

阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

It is generally believed that scientific research should improve our quality of life. Meanwhile, there is almost universal agreement that the government should provide financial and political support for any research that is likely to result in immediate and significant benefits for the majority of people. However, when it comes to whether the government should support scientific research with no practical use, people's ideas vary. I agree with the statement that the government should distribute enough funds to any scientific research that aims to improve the wellbeing of people, even if it is of no practical use in the short run.

Scientific research whose social benefits are immediate, predictable, and farreaching should continue to be a high priority (优先事项). For example, biotechnology research has been proven to help cure and prevent diseases; advances in medical technology make it possible to offer safer treatments; information technology enables education to be more accessible; and communication technology promotes global peace by improving mutual understanding among people and their participation in the democratic (民主的) process.

However, this is not to say that research whose benefits are less immediate or clear should be given a lower priority. It is difficult to predict what research will finally lead to the greatest contributions to society. Unwillingness to finance less practical scientific research could have a harmful effect on the efforts to explore new knowledge. This is particularly true of the computer science. For example, before the first computer was invented, public opinions went against it, as most people saw nothing practical in computer research. However, computers transformed the way human society developed and proved to be of great use in the long run, especially in terms of scientific development in fields such as the military, medicine, aviation, and education.

Therefore, never should we think that scientific research whose benefits are unknown is not worth undertaking since the purpose of any research should be to discover the truth, whatever it might be.
