Life is competitive some kids can do something faster or better than other kids. This might not seem fair, but all people are different and how well you can do something is different from others. This means there are "winners" and "losers", and lots of people are neither winners nor losers but in-between. You can choose to be a good winner or an even better loser whether you are competing against others or yourself.

    Being a "good" winner

No one likes a "show off".

No one likes someone who takes all the praise for the efforts of a team. No one likes people who put others down to make themselves look good. To be a good winner you need to.

⑴Be modest (谦虚的).

⑵Thank those who helped you for their efforts.

⑶Keep trying to improve your skills.

⑷Aim for the next step up in whatever you are doing well.

Being an even better loser

Of course it's disappointing to lose, especially if you are close to winning. Behaving badly or angrily, complaining about things being "unfair" won't change the final result and will only make you look like a bad sport. And no one likes bad sports either.

To be an even better loser you need to:

⑴Behave politely, nicely and kindly.

⑵Congratulate the other team.

⑶Keep any negative thoughts to yourself - at least until you are away from the game.

It's all right to let out your negative thoughts to your best friend or parents later. And if you don't do very well in a game, try harder to learn for the next one. Improving yourself makes you a winner too.

  1. (1) What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A . We are either losers or winners. B . We should face winning and losing properly. C . We can do nothing about winning and losing. D . We are always competing with others not ourselves.
  2. (2) Which is not a good behaviour if we succeed?
A . Going on improving our skills. B . Telling our team members to aim higher. C . Thanking our team members for their efforts. D . Putting down others to make ourselves look good.
  3. (3) Who is probably a bad sport?
A . Tom keeps saying the game is unfair when he loses. B . Jim encourages his tearmmates after their team loses. C . Anna thanks her coach for what he has done though she fails. D . Cindy shows her congratulations to other competitors even if she fails.
  4. (4) Where can you find this article?
    A . In a fashion magazine. B . In an online city guide. C . On a school newspaper. D . In a classic novel.

In the village of Kila Raipur, India, people would like to take part in their unusual Olympics. Even though the villagers don't spend millions of dollars on the sport, these games seem to be much more fun than the real Olympics!

Now in its 77th year, the sport took place in the village Kila Raipur in an Indian state from January 31st to February 3rd. A villager named Inder Singh Grewal wanted to organize an event which would allow farmers to show their skills, maintain their culture and just have a good time.

Over the years, it has become popular and now includes not just the farmers, but also some of the world's finest athletes from 7 to 70 years old.

However, the ones that interest the biggest crowds are the special sports like the bull(公牛) races. In the races, bulls run at high speed against each other, with athletes balanced on small carts(手推车). Then there is the game that challenges athletes to lift bicycles with their teeth or better still, using their teeth to pull a car. If that is not special enough for you to get excited about this, there is a competition that allows a tractor(拖拉机)to run over an athlete's body!

All in all, the sport not only tests the skills and strength of its athletes, but also cheers up people .The best part is that everyone, old or young, can take part in the sport. So it`s no wonder that over 4,000 athletes and over a million watchers run into the small village of Kila Raipur each year!

The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics was a great success. China has kept the promise to hold a green Olympics. Many green actions made it possible, like providing environmentally friendly smart beds, using new energy(能源)cars supporting sporting places with 100% clean energy and reusing rain and snow water

Take making ice as an example. China didn't use R507a common material to make ice because it isn't friendly enough to the environment. Through 18 months' hard work, China independently developed the CO2 direct cooling technology.

A net of tubes runs under the ice. High-pressure liquid(液态)CO2 goes through them to create heat(热) exchange. The CO2 evaporates(蒸发) under the ice surface. The evaporation takes in heat and turns water on the surface into ice. And the CO goes into another circle. This technology helps to make ice better and faster. And above all, it is much greener because there's no new CO2 produced. Among all the 15 ice sporting places in the Winter Olympics, 7 used the CO2 direct cooling technology to make ice. As a result, much less pollution was caused.

Beijing did so much more to save energy. Beijing built the new sporting places with green materials. As for the old ones, Beijing used new glass walls to take the place of traditional walls

to let more natural light in. 70% of the waste heat was also reused to keep warm and dry. And a large number of new energy cars were used at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics

The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics is the first to truly achieve carbon neutrality(碳中和), and it has set new standards in green technologies. Some newspapers say China has set an example for the world in environmental protection and green development.

  1. (1) How long did it take China to develop the CO direct cooling technology?
    A . 18 months. B . 100 weeks C . 15 days. D . 7 years
  2. (2) The writer writes Para. 3 to show_________.

There is an argument about whether or not boys and girls should be able to play sports on the same team. This can be a particularly tricky argument, but in the end, the benefits of coed(男女同校的)sports outweigh any negative aspects.

"It is a well-known fact that boys are built to be stronger and bigger than girls. However, that does not mean that girls are too fragile(脆弱的)to play sports with boys," says Madeline R. She's right. Boys are naturally built to be stronger, but girls can still compete with boys. In 2013, over 1,500 girls played boy football, and some were the best on their team.

Both boys and girls can gain skills from playing with and against the opposite gender(性别). A girl playing sports with boys will help the girl improve, making her stronger, tougher, faster, and more powerful as an athlete than she would have been playing with girls. Boys can also gain new skills from girls, becoming more agile and flexible(灵活的).

Playing in coed sports might not be for every girl; some might be more comfortable playing sports with the same gender. But girls that have the physical ability, sports skills, confidence, and desire to compete with boys should have the choice to play coed sports. During an interview, Katie Smith, Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA)star, talked about how she always played with boys when she was young. She recognized early on that boys provided her with the best competition to improve her skills.

There are many social benefits, too. According to Laura E. Berk, a child psychologist, sometime kids aged between9and will begin to develop gender stereotypes(性别刻板印象). Playing coed sports can help prevent gender stereotypes, and learning to view the opposite gender as a friend and not something frightening is something that can be useful throughout life.

It increases a girl's confidence level, too. Letting girls compete with boys enhances their view of themselves and makes them more flexible. "Sports for girls has many benefits, including better grades, better body image, less depression and a higher chance of graduating from high school," says Leigh R. She's right, and the improvement in all of these areas will increase girls can play with and against boys.

These are all reasons why boys and girls should be able to play sports together on the same team. While it might not be for everyone, there are definitely people out there that are looking to improve their game, and coed sports is an excellent way to do that.
