I hated dinner parties. But I decided to give them another shot because I'm in London. And my friend Mallery invited me. And because dinner parties in London are very different from those back in New York. There, “I'm having a dinner party” means “I'm booking a table for 12 at a restaurant you can't afford and we'll be sharing the cheque evenly, no matter what you eat.”

Worse, in Manhattan there is always someone who leaves before the bill arrives. They'll throw down cash, half of what they owe, and then people like me, who don't drink, end up paying even more. But if I try to use the same trick, the hostess will shout “Where are you going?” And it's not like I can say I have somewhere to go: everyone knows I have nowhere to go.

But in London, dinner parties are in people's homes. Not only that, the guests are an interesting mix. The last time I went to one, the guests were from France, India, Denmark and Nigeria; it was like a gathering at the United Nations. In New York, the mix is less striking. It's like a gathering at Bloomingdale's, a well-known department store.

For New Yorkers, talking about other parts of the world means Brooklyn and Queens in New York. But at Mallery's, when I said that I had been to Myanmar recently, people knew where it was. In New York people would think it was a usual new club.

  1. (1) What does the word “shot” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

    A . choice B . try C . style D . goal
  2. (2) What does the author dislike most about dinner parties in New York?

A . There is a strange mix of people. B . The restaurant are expensive. C . The bill is not fairly shared. D . People have to pay cash.
  3. (3) What does the author think of the parties in London?

    A . A bit unusual. B . Full of tricks. C . Less costly. D . More interesting.
  4. (4) What is the author's opinion of some New Yorkers from her experience?

    A . Easygoing. B . Self-centred. C . Generous. D . Conservative.
  5. (5) What is the main idea of this article?

A . The author hated dinner parties. B . The author prefer dinner parties in London to those in New York. C . The difference between London and New York. D . Mallery invited the author to a party.

Grandparents' Day is a warm holiday that allows children and adults an opportunity to show their appreciation for their Grandparents. Grandparents' Day and the weeks just before it are the time when children all over the country start thinking about what to get their Grandmothers and Grandfathers as presents for Grandparents' Day. Of course, giving presents is just one way of celebrating Grandparents' Day, but how to give gifts requires planning.

Choosing presents for Grandparents' Day can be a very difficult task. Because Grandparents' Day and holidays of its kind are meant to honor some of the most important people in our lives, the task of choosing presents that will be appropriate can be challenging. It can be very difficult to even consider the question of what kind of gift could show a Grandparent how much we love them and care for them. Especially for those children who do not have much money, finding the right Grandparents' Day present at the right price is a very difficult task.

One solution to the difficulty of what to buy as a present for Grandparents' Day is not to buy anything at all. Rather than buying a material item that is almost sure to be short of expressing the depth and sincerity(诚心诚意) of your feelings for your Grandmother or Grandfather, consider another kind of choice entirely. One way that you can show a Grandparent that you really care is to make them something. A handmade gift can go a long way towards expressing your love on Grandparents' Day. Of course, there are also a lot more other ways to celebrate Grandparents' Day than by just giving presents to your parents.

  1. (1) What does Grandparents' Day mean to people?

A . It is a time to express love and appreciation to the old. B . It gives them a chance to get together. C . It makes the old think of their past experiences. D . It gives them an opportunity to take time off work.
  2. (2) According to the writer, which of the following gifts can best show your love to your grandparents?

    A . A pair of expensive shoes. B . Some delicious food. C . A big TV set. D . A chair made by yourself.
  3. (3) What difficulty could people meet when preparing gifts for the old?

A . Choosing the proper gifts. B . Sparing time to make gifts. C . Not having a large amount of money. D . Not having enough time to shop.
  4. (4) What will be discussed in the following paragraph?

A . How to make gifts for the old by yourself. B . What is the best gift for the old. C . Some other ways to show your appreciation to the old. D . How to buy proper gifts with not enough money.

Once a king asked an artist to paint a picture by him. He told the artist he didn’t want to

any shadows in picture, just sunshine. When the king saw the finish picture, he was

disappointed. Without shadows, everything in the picture looked flat or unreal. The point of the

A survey has shown that what you do on a plane can be determined by which nationality is listed on your passport.

According to the results of an international passenger survey, Australians are the biggest drinkers on board with 36 percent choosing to down the hatch, compared to 35 percent of Americans and 33 percent of Brits.

The Airline Passenger Experience Association(APEX) spoke to around 1,500 people, aged 18 and older, who have travelled by plane at least once during the last three months and were living in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, China, Singapore, Australia and Brazil.

The results found Chinese travelers are most likely to nod off once the seat-belt sign switches off. They are also the first to take out their credit card for some in-flight shopping and the biggest fans of gaming. Americans on the other hand like to use their time in the air more productively—- when not drinking—- choosing to work while flying at 35,000 feet.

Meanwhile, Brits and Germans are the best at making chat with random strangers—-spending 50 percent more time than any other nationality. Comparatively, Brazilians conduct their conversations online via email, messaging apps or social media.

Despite plane food having a bad reputation, seven out of ten interviewees said they were happy to eat up on the selection of in-flight snacks and meals. In-flight magazines were also popular with four out of five passengers.

The international flyers did however express their desire for better in-flight entertainment. “The industry has greatly improved the comfort, entertainment and onboard service, and passengers are accepting those improvements” said Russell Lemieux, APEX executive director. “At the same time, passengers are demanding more from their air travel experiences which will drive more improvements touching all aspects of the journey. ” he added.

    A good heart

Dikembe Mutombo grew up in Africa among great poverty and disease. He came to Georgetown University on a scholarship to study medicine — but Coach (教练) John Thompson got a look at Dikembe and had a different idea. Dikembe became a star in the NBA, and a citizen of the United States. But he never forgot the land of his birth, or the duty to share his fortune with others. He built a new hospital in his old hometown in the Congo. A friend has said of this good-hearted man: “Mutombo believes that God has given him this chance to do great things.”

    Success and kindness

After her daughter was born, Julie Aigner-Clark searched for ways to share her love of music and art with her child. So she borrowed some equipment, and began filming children's videos in her own house. The Baby Einstein Company was born, and in just five years her business grew to more than $20 million in sales. And she is using her success to help others — producing child safety videos with John Walsh of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Julie says of her new program: “I believe it's the most important thing that I have ever done. I believe that children have the right to live in a world that is safe.”
