Most people feel lonely sometimes, but it usually only lasts between a few minutes and a few hours. This kind of loneliness is not serious. In fact, it is quite normal. For some people, though, loneliness can last for years. Now researchers say there are three different types of loneliness.
The first kind of loneliness is temporary. This is the most common type. It usually disappears quickly and does not require any special attention. The second kind situational loneliness is a natural result of a particular situation. For example, a family problem, the death of a loved one, or moving to a new place. Although this kind of loneliness can cause physical problems, such as headaches and sleeplessness, it usually does not last for more than a year.
The third kind of loneliness is the most severe. Unlike the second type chronic(长期的)loneliness usually lasts more than two years and has no specific cause. People who experience habitual loneliness have problems socializing and becoming close to others. Unfortunately, many chronically lonely people think there is little or nothing they can do to improve their condition.
Psychologists agree that one important factor in loneliness is a person's social contacts, e.g. friends, family members, co-workers, etc. We depend on various people for different reasons. For instance, our families give us emotional support, our parents and teachers give us guidance, and our friends share similar interests and activities.
However, psychologists have found that, though lonely people may have many social contacts, they sometimes feel they should have more. They question their popularity.
Psychologists are trying to find ways to help habitually lonely people for two reasons; they are unhappy and unable to socialize and there is a connection between chronic loneliness and serious illness such as heart disease. While temporary and situational loneliness can be a normal, healthy part of life, chronic loneliness can be a very sad, and sometimes dangerous condition.

It is reported that conservation groups in North America haveBeen arguing about theBenefits and dangers of wolves. Some groupsBelieve wolves shouldBe killed.Other peopleBelieve wolves mustBe protected so that they will not disappear from the wilderness(荒野).
For Killing Wolves
In Alaska, the wolves almost disappeared a few years ago, because hunters were killing hundreds of them for sport. However, laws were established to protect the wolves from sportsmen and people who catch the animals for their fur.So the wolf population has greatly increased. Now there are so many wolves that they are destroying their own food supply.
A wolf naturally eats animals in the deer family.People in the wilderness also hunt deer for food. Many of the animals haveBeen destroyedBy the very cold winters recently andBy changes in the wilderness plant life. When the deer can't find enough food, they die.
If the wolves continue to kill large numbers of deer, their prey(猎物)will disappear some day.And the wolves will, too. So we must change the cycle of life in the wilderness toBalance the ecology. If we killed more wolves, we would save them and their prey from dying out. We'd also save some farm animals.
In another northern state, wolves attack cows and chickens for food.Farmers want the government to sendBiologists to study the problem.TheyBelieve it necessary to kill wolves in some areas and to protect them in places where there is a small
wolf population.
Against Killing Wolves
If you had lived long ago, you would have heard many different stories about the dangerous wolf.According to most stories, hungry wolves often kill people for food.Even today, the stories of the "bigBad wolf" will not disappear.
But the fact is wolves are afraid of people.and they seldom travel in areas where there is a human smell. When wolves eat other animals, they usually kill the very young, or the sick and injured. The strongest survive. No kind of animal would have
survived through the centuries if the weak members had lived. And has alwaysBeen a law of nature.
Although some people say it is good sense to kill wolves, we say it is nonsense! Researchers have found wolves and their prey living inBalance. The wolves keep the deer population fromBecoming too large, and that keeps aBalance in the wilderness plant life.
The real problem is that the areas where wolves can live areBeing usedBy people.Even if wilderness land is not used directly for human needs. The wolves can't always find enough food.So they travel to the nearest source, which is often afarm. Then there is danger. The "bigBad wolf" has arrived! And everyone knows what happens next.
Each year, half a million people die from brain aneurysms(动脉瘤)—when a blood vessel bursts in the brain. An aneurysm is a bulge in a blood vessel that can burst. If that happens in the brain,it can be deadly. For survivors, physical disabilities are often severe. They may include memory problems, loss of balance, trouble speaking and even blindness. But new technologies are increasing survival rates and reducing disabilities.
Beaumont Bacon is a survivor who makes light of her experience because she is a comedian. She uses humor to make others laugh. Now she's working on a new show.Michael Alexander is her doctor. He operated on Beaumont Bacon after her attack.“She had bleeding in the frontal area of her brain,so right above the eyes. The part that was in the brain was about maybe the size of an egg. So,that's a fairly large bleed.”
Ms.Bacon had a better chance at survival than most people because of Dr.Alexander.He directs the Neurovascular Center in Los Angeles. The center offers new technologies that include placing a catheter(导管) into an aneurysm, then threading wires to promote blood clots(血栓).This technique reduces the chances of another burst blood vessel.“You don't have to open up the skull or open up the brain to do surgery. It's all done from inside the blood vessels. So it reduces the amount of blood loss, and the recovery is much faster.”
For Beaumont Bacon's recovery, the hospital worked to prevent problems commonly found in patients with a burst aneurysm. The problems include brain swelling that can shut down blood vessels. She spent a month in a coma(昏迷)—unable to communicate with doctors, friends and loved ones. But with a year of treatment, she recovered. Now,she is making people laugh.
You've flown halfway around the world;you've sniffed out this place that nobody in Falongland or Thailand seems to have ever heard of;so what on earth is there to do here? You consider this question as you sink into an old wooden beach chair that holds you above the sand.
It was a long journey from Bangkok to Huaplee.By the time you found the bus station and got yourself sorted out,it took almost as long as the flight from Falongland.
Huaplee is located just south of Hua Hin,about two hundred kilometres from Bangkok, down the west side of the Gulf of Thailand. Not many tourists find this place, and the ones that do wonder if finding it has been their purpose all along.
There's an apparent laziness that surrounds you here. It's what this place offers, and it's free of charge. The small waves that tap the shoreline seem to slow everything down. You settle into your beach chair in preparation for a long rest. You sit there and watch the sea.
It's early afternoon,so the cook comes out and asks what you'd like to eat this evening. Before long he's rushed off to the market to buy the ingredients for whatever it was that you ordered-every meal fresh and to order. No menu here.
There is no poolside noise here but just that wonderfully warm, clear blue sea. There's no street noise. The only sounds are the murmurs of nature.
For now you just count your blessings (福祉),listing them in the sand with your toe (脚趾).You don't have to worry about being late for work. You don't have to do anything.
The beach to your right stretches off to the horizon (地平线),slowly narrowing to nothingness only to reemerge again on your left, now steadily widening until it covers the chair beneath you.Sand to your left and sand to your right; it's unbroken, endless. No start,no end, just sand, sun, and peace.Step off it,and you reenter the world of traffic, stress, work, and hurry.
Normally you're the type who can't sit still for more than ten minutes, but you're on Huaplee Lazy Beach now and,in the right frame of mind,it stretches all the way around the world.
“How could it take me so long to find it?” you wonder.
“Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.”—Lao Tzu
If you are in a city where everyone rushes, realize that you don't have to be like everyone else. You can be different. You can walk instead of driving in rush hour traffic. You can be on your iPhone or Blackberry less, and disconnected sometimes. Your environment doesn't control your life—you do. I'm not going to tell you how to give you a step-by-step guide to moving slower.
⒈Do less.
Cut back on your projects, on your task list, on how much you try to do each day. Pick 2-3 important things— or even just one important thing— and work on those first. Save smaller, routine tasks for later in the day, but give yourself time to focus.
⒉Meeting are usually a “big waste of time”. And they eat into your day, forcing you to squeeze the things you really need to do into small windows, and making you rush.
⒊Start to put off or cancel the unnecessary.
When you do the important things with focus, without rush, there will be things that get pushed back, and that don't get done. And you need to ask yourself:What would happen if I stopped doing them?
⒋Practice mindfulness.
Don't care so much about future or the past. When you eat, fully appreciate your food. When you are with someone, be with them fully. When you are walking, appreciate your surroundings, no matter where you are.
Try these things out. Life is better when unrushed. Remember the quote: if nature can get everything done without rushing, so can you.
A. Have fewer meetings.
B. How necessary are these things?
C. Simply learn to live in the present.
D. Focus not on quantity but on quality
E. Give yourself more time to get ready and get there.
F. The world likely won't end if you don't pass one of the examinations.
G. But here are some things to consider and perhaps adopt, if they work for your life.

Tom is one of my best friends at high school. We spent a lot of time together every day. We share a lot common. For example, we both work hardly and love sports. Although I am not so smart as her, we both do very well at school. Tom's favorite subjects is history and Chinese, and he also speaks excellent English. I am used to be bad at English. Thank to his help, I have made a great progress in it. Yesterday, our English teacher said she decided to hold an English speech contest next week. I think a good chance to improve my English. Both Tom and I are looking forward to show our potential in the speech contest!

As summer vacation are coming soon, my classmates are trying very hardly to get train tickets to go home. But I have made up my minds to spend the vacation far from home for first time in my life. My parents have agreed to visiting me, and I will have a different vacation. When they came here, I will show them around my university and the city just as well. I have decided to buy them some nice gifts. It will be a big surprising for them. My parents have done a lot for me, but I think it is high time that I did anything special to express my thanks.
