I created Teens Helping Seniors with my friends. The group has about 200 volunteers. The volunteers deliver food or other supplies for the elderly in town. I spend six to eight hours a week buying food and making deliveries. By now we have completed 350 deliveries.

I organized Mittler Senior Technology, a program to help the elderly learn how to use computers and smartphones. Now there are 50 local seniors in the weekly technology classes. I want to make sure that the seniors could stay connected to the world.

Nowadays, kuakuaqun or praise groups have become more and more popular on the Internet, Their aim is to comfort young people. These groups provide words of support for those who are unhappy.

Spending just a little money, you can enter such a group. Share your problems or success, and you will receive positive messages soon. These messages, mostly from strangers, will help you feel better. A leader of one of the groups talks about his first purpose, “I want to help people learn to praise others and accept others, praise.”

I like the idea of kuakuaqun. However, I think getting praise from strangers online isn’t very useful in the long run. This is especially true when you are paying for the praise. These people don’t know you, so the praise may not be earnest . Real and meaningful praise comes from the people you know.

With this in mind, we should try to praise our  friends and family members  when they need some encouragement. Simply saying to a classmate, ‘I like you’, can lift his or her confidence. Being kind to others is easy. And it adds the necessary sweetness to make everyone’s life better.

1 Words of support of kuakuaqun are mainly from _________.

A students B strangers C relatives D classmates

2 In kuakuaqun you can learn __________.

C to draw some pictures D to praise others and accept others’ praise

3 What’s the meaning of the underlined word “earnest”?

The Chinese have a long tradition of art, and painting is one of the major art forms. It is still popular nowadays.

Figure painting

Starting from the Han dynasty, artists made people as the main subject of their painting. These paintings are called figure paintings.

Gu Kaizhi(345—409) became famous for his figure paintings during the Jin dynasty. He used fine brushes to outline the people in black. Then he filled them with colour. This detailed, realistic style of painting was known as gongbi. The use of gongbi style resulted in more lifelike figure paintings.

Wu Daozi(680—759)was known as the Sage of Painting for his unique painting style. He was very good at painting human figures and created special techniques for painting clothes that seemed to flow with the light wind.

Landscape painting

Between the Tang and Song dynasties, landscape painting became popular. Artists did ink wash painting with a brush and ink. Many landscape painters were scholar artists. They liked to express themselves through painting. Instead of painting what they saw, they painted the landscapes from their imagination. They also added poems to their paintings.

Modern Chinese painters have inherited (继承) the long tradition of Chinese painting and brought this form of art to the world. Zhang Daqian (1899—1983) is regarded as “the Picasso of China” and Wu Guanzhong (1919—2010) was the first Chinese painter whose works were shown at the British Museum.
