I have been working at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge for the past 20 years. My day starts at 5:30, when I have two cups of black coffee while listening to the radio. Recently, I've been using the morning to work on a book I'm currently writing. I'm in the hospital just before 8:00. If it's a nice day, I'll cycle the fifteen miles to my office, but my favorite way of getting to work is on my motorbike.
My week is divided into operating and non-operating days. Monday and Tuesday are my operating days and I like to come in early and stay late to check the progress of my patients. During the rest of the week, I'm in clinics or working in research.
On a typical operating day, I will conduct two to three operations. Some of the complex operations can take as long as ten to twelve hours. In certain cases, I think about them days, or even weeks, in advance.
Last week, I had one of these cases which took a lot of thinking through ( 充分考虑 ) beforehand. The patient was a young man who had a rare congenital heart abnormality ( 先天性心脏畸形 ). He needed an operation urgently, or he would probably die. I planned the operation in my head while at the dentist's.
Like many other doctors, I am always on call for my patients. When I do get to have some time to myself, I enjoy creating crossword puzzles ( 纵横填字游戏 ). I even make them for The Guardian!

Like most kids, Landon Kenstrick, 5 years old, has a favorite animal. However, his favorite animal is quite different from other kids’. He loves pangolins.
Pangolins have small heads and long, broad tails. They are toothless. They have small ears, but their hearing is good.
Their sense of smell is well-developed, too. But their sight is poor. When they feel frightened, they roll up into a ball to protect themselves. “My favorite thing about the pangolin is the scales (鳞片) it has on its body. They look cool, “Landon said.
Landon first learned about pangolins from a TV show, Wild Kratts. Knowing that pangolins are facing the danger of dying out, Landon quickly decided to take action to protect them. He wanted to tell everyone he knew about them. On Halloween, he had his parents carve (雕刻) a pangolin into their pumpkin (南瓜) , so that when people asked what it was, he could tell them all about his favorite animal. When Christmas came around, Landon had only one wish: to save the pangolins. His parents had him “adopt (领养) ” a pangolin in Landon’s name. They also came up with a good idea. They helped Landon make Christmas gifts to sell to help raise money for the pangolins at a market. So far, he has raised $ 400.
If you think a 5-year-old boy is too young to save the pangolins, you’d be wrong. Landon told us nobody’s too young to save anything.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but many people don’t have it. Common reasons for not eating breakfast include shortage of time, not feeling hungry, traditional dislike for breakfast, and dieting ( 节食 ).
Breakfast simply means “break the fast ”. You eat nothing for at least 6 to 12 hours each night. Even though you have been sleeping, you have still been burning energy. And in the morning your body needs energy for the day’s work ahead.
A good breakfast should provide up to 1/3 of your total calories ( 卡路里 ) that your body needs for the day. Generally speaking, we eat 400 less calories for breakfast than for dinner. If breakfast doesn’t interest you in the morning, try eating a lighter dinner earlier in the evening or save half your dinner for breakfast in the morning.
If you still aren’t hungry in the morning, start with something small like juice or bread or have nutritious ( 有营养的 ) mid-morning snack later when you are hungry.
So, you say you’re on a diet. Some people are afraid that eating breakfast will make them hungrier during the day and they will eat more. It is true that eating breakfast is likely to make you feel hungry throughout the day. That’s because your body is working correctly. Although you may feel as if you are eating more all day long, in fact you’re probably not.
Not eating breakfast may cause you to overeat, because a fall in blood sugar often makes you feel hungry later. To make things worse, since your body is in a slowed state, it will not be able to burn those extra calories well. If you feed your body healthy snacks and meals throughout the day, you may not become hungry so easily and eat too much when you have meals.
Since breakfast is the first and most important meal of the day, your choice is important. The best breakfast foods are fruits, juice, lean meat, and grain products such as bread, rice, noodles and cereals.
