Last night, a school night, my 11-year-old son's baseball team played a game that lasted until 9:30. By the time we got home and he had a quick dinner and shower, it was 10:30-an hour and a half later than a child who gets up at 6:30 should be going to bed. We love baseball. My son is having fun, getting exercise, and learning patience, teamwork and sports spirit. But the truth is that the game also influences his sleep.
As parents, we want good things for our children. We want them to be healthy both in body and in mind. To this end , we look for ways to help our kids grow and develop. We help them with their homework. We sign them up for dance, soccer and baseball. We encourage our kids to take honors courses(培优课程)or to have after-school jobs. And we praise them for hard-earned success and achievements.
However, the irony is that all of these activities and responsibilities that we are giving our children to make their lives colorful could be badly influencing their health and taking happiness away. Activities, responsibilities, and goals are good. But if we want our kids to realize their full physical, learning and social ability, sleep is important. We have to start taking sleep seriously.
Parents make bedtime routines and carry out(执行)strict rules about nighttime. But in fact, these measures(措施)aren't enough because getting our kids, enough sleep isn't just about carrying out stricter bedtime. It actually requires more than that. In order to ensure our kids get the sleep they need, bout parents and schools should make an effort.

Not getting enough sleep is bad for health. Depending on the research from the scientists, people who don’t get enough sleep are less willing to socialize( 社交 ) with others. They are simply too tired to go out.
The researchers did a small study. They tested 18 young people who had good sleep after a sleepless night. The participants watched videos of people with neutral( 中性的 ) expressions walking towards them. When the person on the video got too “close” to them, they pushed a button to stop the video.
The participants kept the person at a distance of 60% further if they hadn’t got enough sleep. They felt that their personal space was being invaded( 侵占 ). But when the participants got a good night’s sleep, they allowed the person to get much closer to them.
The result shows that the less sleep you get, the less you want to socialize with others. In turn, other people may think you strange and stay away from you. So if you want to be a more sociable( 喜欢与人交往的 ) and popular person, sleeping well might help.

Mary was waiting for the airplane to take off. She was happy to have a seat by herself. Just then, an air hostess ( 空姐 ) came up to her and asked, “Would you mind changing your seat?” The girl behind Mary had a black-and-blue face and a sad expression. She had her arms broken, and she needed help. “I don’t want to sit there.” Mary thought immediately. But the soft voice came again, “She needs help.” Finally, Mary moved to that seat.
The girl was named Emily. She had been in a car accident and now was on her way for treatment ( 治疗 ).
When the snacks and juice arrived, Mary realized that Emily could not feed herself. Mary considered offering to feed her but hesitated ( 犹豫 ), as it seemed too impolite to offer service to a stranger. But then Mary realized that Emily’s need was more important. Mary offered to help her eat. Although Emily was uncomfortable to accept, she agreed. They became closer and closer in a short time. By the end of the five-hour trip, Mary’s heart had warmed, and the time was really better spent than if she had just sat by herself.
Mary was very glad that she had sat next to Emily and fed her. Love sometimes goes beyond human border ( 边界 ) and removes ( 消除 ) the fears that keep people away. When we reach our hands to serve another, we grow to live in a larger and more rewarding ( 有回报的 ) world.
