Once, long ago, there was a man who traveled from Persia to India on foot. He had 41 been to India before. When he arrived at a village, he happened upon a fruit stand. In that village, fruit was quite 42 because of the lack of water. The man was looking around at the fruits when he 43 a big basket of some very red, very long fruit. It was the cheapest fruit in the shop, not expensive at all. 44 the man walked up to the counter and asked: “How 45 per kilo?” And the shopkeeper said: “Two rupees.” Two rupees in India is 46 . The man thought to himself: “What a 47 !” So he bought a whole kilogram of the fruit and began to 48 it. But after he tried a few pieces, he screamed: “Oh, my God!” His eyes watered, his mouth burned, and his face turned 49 . He coughed and choked and gasped for breath.
But despite his 50 , he continued to stuff the fruits into his mouth! Onlookers 51 their heads and laughed. One man yelled: “You’re 52 , man! Those are chilies! People use them as a condiment ( 佐料 ). You don’t just eat them by the handful like that; they’re not fruit!” But the man replied: “No, I can’t 53 ! I paid money for them, and now I’ll eat them. It’s my money!”
You probably think this man was pretty 54 , right? Nevertheless, I bet you or someone you know makes the same 55 on a daily basis. People invest money, time and effort into a relationship, business or job. Even when experience tells them that it’s not 56 , and they know there’s little hope of improvement, they still 57 because they don’t want to waste the initial investment. But this is 58 . It is no different than being the man who continued eating chilies because he didn’t want to waste the money he’d paid for them.
Losing something is difficult, but it is important to 59 the loss and move on. 60 you’ll just keep burning your mouth on hot chilies.

I hear many parents complaining that their teenage children are rebelling. I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning how to stand on your own two feet. But take a look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are all taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out boldly on their own, most of them are clutching at (attempting to seize) one another's hands for reassurance.
They claim that they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in mussel. But somehow they all end up crowded round listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in thus and such a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoon(蚕茧) — into a lager cocoon.
It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry had firmly carved out a teenager market. These days every teenager can learn from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be. And many of today's parents have come toward high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds up to a great barrier for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path.
But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don't care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come — with the people who respect you for who you are. That is the only kind of popularity that really counts.

What can help you make a fortune in the future? Graduating from a top university might not be enough. A new study from the University of Essex in Britain has shown that the more friends you have in school, the more money you’ll earn later.
The idea that popularity could have a serious influence on one’s earning potential shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. The researchers noted that if you want to get ahead in life, social skills and networking are easily as powerful as talent and hard work.
“If a person has lots of friends, it means that he or she has the ability to get along with others in all kinds of different situations,” said Xu Yanchun, 17, from Nantou High School in Shenzhen, who totally agreed with the recent finding. “Also, friends always help each other. They not only create wider social circles for you but lift your mood when you are occasionally in low spirits,” said Xu. She believed that all this helps you “earn a higher salary.”
Maybe that’s why some people think the younger generations are in the age of Friendalholism (交友狂症)? A woman even complained that the networking website Facebook’s 5,000-friend limit was too low for her large reserve of social contacts.
But what does a friend mean? Should friends be regarded as a form of currency?
“Call me uncool (土里土气的), but I think of a friend as an actual person with whom I have an actual history and whom I enjoy actually seeing. It seems, however, that this is no longer the definition of friend”, said Meghan Daum, who works with The Los Angeles Times in the US.
Daum dislikes the idea that quantity is better than quality in the age of friendaholism. She thought the idea of friendship, at least among the growing population of Internet social networkers, was to get as many of not-really-friends as possible. For example, a friend might be someone you might know personally but who could just as easily be the friend of a friend of some other Facebook friend you don’t actually know. Although she agreed that social ties grease(润滑)the wheels of life, she also warned. “Too bad one thing money can’t buy is a real friend.”
56. What can friends do in the eyes of Xu Yanchun?
A. They can help you with your schoolwork.
B. They teach you how to make more money.
C. They help you to get rid of sadness and cheer you up.
D. They introduce their friends to you.
57. What will be needed if you are to achieve success according to the researchers?
A. Social skills, friends, good mood and fortune.
B. Social skills, networking, talent and hard work.
C. Social skills, networking, potential and fortune.
D. Social skills, talent, hard work and the facebook.
58. We learn that Meghan Daum’s attitude towards friends is somewhat __________.

_________ there was no conclusive evidence, most people thought he was guilty.

Now I 36 that in marriages, true love is 37 of all that is. The happiest people don't 38 have the best of everything; they just 39 the best of everything they have. 40 isn't about how to live through the storm, but how to dance in the rain.

David and I met as interns(实习生) on Capital Hill. Our love then grew through a 5-year long-distance relationship. We were able to survive despite our pursuit to become a doctor and a lawyer. He was at the University of Michigan School of Medicine and I was at the University of Maryland School of Law. We encouraged each other. David proposed to me on May 15, 2011 in front of both of our families. It was amazing! I graduated from law school on that day David proposed and we got married the day after he graduated from medical school.
David and I really didn’t have much money to have a huge wedding, but we wanted the wedding of our dreams. We decided to plan everything ourselves. For decoration, I tried to create as many ideas as I could. We had a signature drink called “The Huxtable”. We used mostly orchids as our flowers. We made our own seating chart (座位图) by downloading a free template(模板)and printing it out on a huge foam board. We could not afford a backdrop (背景幕) to go behind the bridal party, so we made one out of tissue and two enormous peg boards. It was awesome. Many people wanted to buy our backdrop, but I gave it to our linen designer because he gave us crazy discounts.
David designed our guestbook by using the Apple iphone photobook application. It was awesome. He came up with the title “Witness to love: David and Susan’s Wedding Day” for the cover and then on the inside he stated this, in part, “Bearing Witness: Thank you for being a witness to our covenant (盟约) with God as we commit ourselves to join as one…” I was moved deeply by his beautiful words.
We make our ceremony programs. We had a couple of gifts for guests. We gave them a handkerchief with our initials at the church, candy from the self-made candy bar display and stainless steel measuring spoons that said “love beyond measure”.
We had a great wedding and the guests enjoyed themselves. By sharing my wedding story, I just want to tell you that you can have a wedding that you want within budget.
