Today our life and work rarely feel light or pleasant. Instead, the whole experience of being alive begins to melt into one enormous obligation(责任).36.
We say this to one another with great pride. 37 We are unavailable to our friends and family, unable to find time for the sunset, to finish off our obligations without time for a single mindful breath. This seems to have become the model of a successful life.
Because we do not rest, we lose our way. We lose the relaxation that gives us help.38. Poisoned by the belief that good things come only through tireless effort, we never truly rest. This is not the world we dreamed of when we were young. But how did we get so terribly rushed in a world filled with work and responsibility, yet it lacks joy and delight?
39. Sunday is the time to enjoy and celebrate what is beautiful and good, time to sing songs, give thanks, and walk. It is time to be refreshed as we stop our work, our chores and our important projects.
Sunday is more than the absence of work. Many of us, in our desperate drive to be successful and care for our many responsibilities, feel terrible guilty when we take time to rest. 40. Many of us still recall when, not long ago, shops and offices were closed on Sundays. Those quiet Sunday afternoons are deep in our cultural memory.
A. We also miss the quiet that gives us wisdom.
B. All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.
C. It becomes the standard greeting everywhere, “I am so busy.”
D. We work through day and night, feeling rather exhausted.
E. But the Sunday has proven its wisdom over the ages.
F. The reason is simple: we have forgotten the Sunday.
G. The busier we are, the more important we seem to ourselves and, we imagine, to others.

What do British students do in their leisure time? The most popular activity must be party, such as birthday party, after-exam party and house party. Sometimes, they don't even need a reason to throw a party. From the very beginning of the term to the end of the exam, student societies, students and schools organize many parties, balls and dinners in which alcohol never gets removed from the drinks. I went to many house parties, birthday parties and the great end-of-term party held in the Student Union Building. They were unforgettable experiences for my study in the U.K.
Apart from parties, British students also participate in societies, sports and voluntary work. Except for societies similar to Chinese ones which are related to students' hobbies, such as basketball, debating and painting, some societies are more likely to be found in western countries, such as horse riding, cheerleading and extreme sports. As for voluntary work, it has developed into a fully functional well-organized financial sector. There're many charity shops which sell second-hand clothes, books and utensils. Those shops both offer paid jobs for full-time workers and also part-time voluntary jobs for students. The most common voluntary work is to make and provide food for homeless people, perform in nursery house and street fundraising for charities. I signed up for a Biko-bike project which is aimed at fixing second-hand broken bikes and rent them to students at a low price. Although I had no experience in repairing anything, let alone bikes, my mentor patiently taught nie step by step how to use certain tools to fix the specific part of a bike. As a student majoring in arts, it was quite interesting and useful to learn some knowledge of science from fixing bikes. The societies and voluntary work develop students' skills and even become a starting point of their careers. One of my friends worked as a volunteer at a charity shop for three years and she became a manager of that charity after graduation.

A. I learnt more knowledge of arts from voluntary work.

Is beauty something always positive? Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable jobs. Personal advisors give them better advice for finding jobs. Even judges are softer on attractive defendants. But in the executive(主管的) circle, beauty can become a disadvantage.
While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder, it is harmful to a woman. Handsome male executives were considered having more honesty than plainer men; effort and ability were thought to lead to their success. Attractive female executives were considered to have less honesty than unattractive ones; their success was connected not with ability but with factors such as luck.
All unattractive women executives were thought to have more honesty and to be more capable than the attractive female executives. Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally manly position appears to lack the manly qualities required.
This is true even in politics, “When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and women differently, ” says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates(候选人). She asked 125 college students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women, in order of attractiveness. The students were told the photographs were of candidates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again, in the order they would vote for them.
The results showed that attractive males completely defeated unattractive men, but the women who had ranked most attractive unchangeably received the fewest votes.

33. Bowman’s experiment shows that when it comes to politics, attractiveness _____.
A. turns out to be a disadvantage to men B. has as little effect on men as on women

She got up early to be ready for the post. From the second floor flat she could see the postman when he came down the street, and the little boy from ground floor brought up her letters on the rare occasions when anything came.
Today she was sure there would be something. Myra wouldn’t forget her mother’s birthday, even if she seldom wrote at other times. Of course Myra was busy. The old lady was proud of Myra. Her husband had been made Mayor, and Myra herself had got a medal for her work.
The old lady was eighty today. She had put on her best dress. Perhaps—perhaps Myra might come. After all, eighty was a special birthday.
Even if Myra did not come, she would send a present. The old lady was sure of that. Two spots of colour brightened her cheeks. She was excited—like a child. She would enjoy her day.
Yesterday Mrs. Morrison had given the flat an extra clean, and today she had brought a card and a bunch of flowers when she came to do the breakfast. Mrs. Grant downstairs had made a cake, and in the afternoon she was going down there to tea. The little boy, Johnnie, had been up with a packet of mints, and said he wouldn’t go out to play until the post had come. “I guess you’ll get lots of presents.” he said.
What would she like? A pair of slippers perhaps. Or a new coat. A coat would be lovely. Blue’s such a pretty colour. Jim had always liked he in blue. Or a table lamp. Or a book, a travel book, with pictures, or a little clock, with clear black numbers. So many lovely things.

For all the dinner table, a glass of milk seems to be a constant, at least it was when I was growing up. It was widely believed that milk was integral in building strong bones and teeth. There’s no doubt that dairy products (乳制品), and milk in particular, are high in protein and calcium, and most milk products are supplemented with Vitamin D and A.
While it’s well known that our bones need calcium, some studies suggest that high calcium intake doesn’t necessarily lower a person’s risk for fractures (骨折). A Harvard study found that people who drank two or more glasses of milk had no greater protection from breaking a bone than those who drank a glass or less a week.
There’s no doubt that we need calcium. Some anti-dairy supporters claim that dairy can lead to heart disease. Much of this claim is based on high fat and high dairy products, like cheeses and creams, which may indeed contribute to cardiovascular problems. Some studies have linked high milk intakes with a risk of prostate cancer; this seems to be caused by high-fat dairy products, not dairy in general.
Although milk was always regarded as one of the most important thing we need for our bones, yet least promoted, factors involved in strengthening bones. Perhaps we should think of dairy as less like a nutrient and more like a food. If you like it, eat it. If not, find some others. Because some claims may not be completely true, when I eat a cream, I’m not thinking about calcium, protein, or any such thing I’m thinking delicious.

A. The more milk you drink, the more risk for fractures you might be.
