Skiing is my favorite sport, even though I had only skied for four days in my whole life! Last year my father promised that because my brother Victor did well in his exams, he would bring us for a special holiday. When Victor got straight A’s, Dad said, “I promised a special holiday. I think I should keep my words.” Victor’s dream was to see really snow. So we flew to Seoul at Christmas vacation, and then took a bus to Muju Resort. As we climb up the mountain, we saw some snow on the trees. We began to play snow! No one in my family had ever touched snow before. We were all like the little children. We picked it up, made snowballs, and threw it at each other.

In a society, such as the United States or Canada, which has many national, religious and cultural differences, people highly value individualism---the difference among people. Teachers place a lot of importance on the qualities that make each student special. The educational systems in these countries show these values. Students don't memorize information. Instead, they work individually and find answers themselves. There is often discussion in the classroom. At an early age, students learn to form their own ideas and opinions.

In most Asian societies, by contrast, people have the same language, history, and culture. Perhaps for this reason, the educational system in much of Asia reflects society’s belief in group goals and purposes rather than individualism. Children in China, Japan, and Korea often work together and help one another in assignments. In the classroom, the teaching methods are often very formal. The teacher lectures, and the students listen. There is not much discussion. Instead, the students recite rules of information that they have memorized.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both of these systems of education. For example, one advantage to the system in Japan is that there is much more math and science than American students learn by the end of high school. They also study more hours each day and more days each year than North Americans do. The system is difficult, but it prepares students for a society that values discipline and self-control. There is, however, a disadvantage. Memorization is an important learning method in Japanese schools, yet many students say that after an exam, they forget much of the information that they have memorized.

The advantage of the educational system in North American, on the other hand, is that students learn to think for themselves. The system prepares them for a society that values creative ideas. There is, however, a disadvantage. When students graduate from high school, they haven’t memorized as many basic rules and facts as students in other countries have.

My mother has always instilled in me the importance of education. Education is essential. It will help me get accepted to college if I perform well academically and advance my opportunities for success in the future. Most jobs now require at least a high school diploma, and for many jobs, a college degree is preferred. It is important that all students have excellent educators in their life to help them achieve and have the opportunity to go to college, get a job, support themselves and their family, and impact the community.

As we celebrate and honor all teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week, I’ve reflected on the impact my teachers have had, and will continue to have, in my life. From Mr. Bowker, who challenged me in math, to Mr. Bernsteen, my health teacher who taught me the value of hard work, my teachers have helped shape the student I am today. But one of the teachers who left a lasting impression on me was my summer school teacher, Mr. Davis, who impacted me beyond the classroom. He found time to connect with me on a personal level and talk to me after class. I felt like Mr. Davis cared about my academic success and was committed to setting an example of what’s possible.

Mr. Davis could relate to what it was like to be a rising ninth-grade black male in today’s society. He taught me how to speak up confidently and share my ideas with others. He told me that I was brilliant and that when I spoke, the world should listen. And when I would put my hand down because I was unsure of my answer, Mr. Davis would immediately say, “No guts, no glory.” He never made me feel inadequate; he encouraged me to always pursue knowledge because he, too, was learning every day. Mr. Davis helped me navigate the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities.

I think having more black male teachers like Mr. Davis in the classroom could increase students’ success. They would share the background and experiences of many of their students and help build long-lasting teacher/student relationships. But, unfortunately, the likelihood that students of color in Nevada will have a teacher that looks like them is one of the lowest in the country.

As the student population becomes more ethnically diverse, teachers in Nevada still are predominantly (显著地)white. According to a 2012 Education Week report, in the Clark County School District, nearly 70 percent of students identified as students of color, but 76 percent of teachers were white. The numbers for black male teachers are more discouraging. Just 2 percent of teachers nationwide are black men.

But you can help change the numbers. Whether you decide to study education in college or graduate school, or apply to programs in Las Vegas such as Teach For America, I hope more black males will consider teaching as a career.

My peers and I need more examples of excellence and success in classrooms—examples who look like us. You can be the model to impact our life and push us to achieve. You can ensure that, when we look to the front of the room, we can see a little bit of ourselves reflected back.

Without a doubtexercise at any time of the day beats no exercise at allBut which is a better time for exercisemorning or evening?

In various studiesscientists have found that subjects tend to do slightly better on measures of physical performance—including endurance耐力strength outputreaction time and aerobic capacity—between 4 and 7 pmThere’re quite a few explanationsthe body’s temperature and hormone荷尔蒙levels peak in late afternoonmaking muscles肌肉more flexible and producing the best ratio比率of testosterone the muscle-building hormoneto cortisol the hormone that does the reverse

But these variations have only small effects. And much as one can adjust to waking up at the same time daily, studies have shown that the body can adapt to the time of day that you train. In several long-term studies, for example, scientists randomly split people into groups and instructed them to train only in the morning or only in the early evening. In the end, the morning exercisers generally did better on tests of physical performance early in the day, while the evening exercisers did better when tested later.

On a practical level, that means that if you plan to run a marathon that starts in the morning, it may be best to schedule your training runs early in the day.

In general, research suggests that the ideal time to exercise is late afternoon, though the advantages are slight.

1The scientists have found in their studies that the participants usually ______ between 4 and 7 p.m.

Ascore higher in physical tests

Bhave highest temperature and hormone levels

Cfeel less tired after exercise

Dare more likely to have exercise

2At the end of the long-term studies, the morning exercisers must have been tested _______

Bonly in the evening

Cearlier than the evening exercisers

Dboth in the morning and evening

AThe exercising environment.

BThe kind of sports the exerciser is having.

We have all heard it: these are supposedly the best years of our lives. 61       are these years really the best years we will ever like? Or will we look back on these years with a sense of regret?

The best way 62        (ensure) we graduate high school regret-free is to step outside the bubble we live in and to step outside of the classrooms we are trapped in. 63       (gain) a sense of the greater picture---of how these years affect our future---will ground us in the 64.         _______(decide) we make during these years. When we graduate, what will we wish we 65___         (do) differently?

When we base our thinking on this idea, suddenly our understanding will be a little bit 66___         (good). But more than that, we will ensure that we can look back with a positive feeling.

Of course, it is always difficult to be completely regret-free just by thinking about 67          ________we will regret in the future. Fortunately, here is a list of how to prevent some of the most common regrets:

Listen to 68         advice of joining clubs....but do not join too many.

Do not set limits on who you can be friends 69         , and do not judge people.

   Get to know your teachers.

A 16-year-old in foster care has finally found a home. His adoption caseworker (社会工作者), who has known him since he was 7, will become his adoptive mother this month.

In October 2013, Davion Only spoke in front of a church congregation (会众) in St. Petersburg, Florida, and made an   41   for adoption. He had recently learned that his   42   mother, who’d been in jail since Only was born, had died. He had spent years bouncing between foster homes. “My name is Davion and I’ve been in foster care since I was born,” he said. “I know God hasn’t given up on me, so I’m not giving up either.”

The   43   plea (恳求) went viral, and Only’s foster agency   44   calls from more than 10,000 people, according to the Tampa Bay Times. Only   45   traveling to Ohio to live with a minister’s family. But after Only got into a physical   46   with one of his older would-be siblings (兄弟姐妹), the minister and his wife changed their minds.

Back in Florida, Only passed through four different   47   homes over the next year, until he called Connie Going, his adoption caseworker, to make a special   48  .

Only had known Going for nearly ten years, and had asked every year if she would adopt him but she always   49  . “I always believed there was a better family than us out there,” Going tells Yahoo Parenting. “He   50   so much in this world.”

When he called me to ask, in that moment, I just knew,” she says. “When he asked me, my heart felt this   52   and I just knew he was my son.”

So Going, 52, invited Only to start spending time   53   the rest of her family — the other four children who she also adopted out of foster care.   54  , Going managed to rent a bigger home, got a lawyer, and started adoption   55   .

Only will officially join Going’s family on April 22, when the adoption   56  . “Today, I am feeling blessed and honored by being chosen to be the parent to all my children,” she says. “I work every day on being the best parent I can to them, to be patient and creative so that I can   57   all their needs.”

A spokesperson for Eckerd, Only’s foster agency, told the Tampa Bay Times they were   58   with the new development. “We are truly thrilled that Davion has been united with his forever family.“

While Going is waiting for the newest   59   to her family to become official in the eyes of the law, she says Only is already her child. “I want him to know he is   60   loved for who he is, the way he is,” she says. “The changes he chooses to make in his life, and the choices, are his to make. As a family we will be there through it all, the good and the bad for our lifetime. He is home.”

Alfred Alder, a famous psychiatrist(精神病学家), had   61   interesting experience. When he was a small boy he got off to a poor start in arithmetic. His teacher got the idea that he had no ability in arithmetic, and told his parents   62   she thought of him in order that they would not expect too much. In this way, they too developed the idea, “ Isn’t   63   too bad that Alfred can’t do arithmetic?” Alfred accepted their64   (mistake) estimate of his ability,   65   (feel) that it was useless to try, and that he was very poor at  arithmetic, just as they expected.

Years later, the well-known South African activist Desmond Tutu would describe the little girl’s 57 process by using the word ubuntu, which means "I am because 58 are."People in that tribe believe that a person is a person through other people. Happiness is the 59 of combining what we love to do with something that is 60 .
