My first year of high school was rough. There was a group of at least eight bullies who 41 me every day, and the teacher let them. Just at this time, I also had a fatally ill friend in the 42 . I felt like life had lost all meaning - I had no hope for the 43 . I 44 began to think about suicide. Over the weeks, the thoughts became stronger.
One day, out of nowhere, the school's TV news team made an 45 . I never really watched the announcements, but this one 46 my attention. The crew team was looking for new members. Maybe it would he fun. But I had to pass a swim test to he on the team and it was only a week 47 .
There was no time to 48 . 1 managed to develop my own little workout plan. Every night I did push-ups and sit-ups on my bedroom floor, adding more each day as the 49 went on. I knew it wasn't much, but I felt like it was at least 50. Fortunately, I 51 to pass the swim test on a rainy Monday and I made the crew team! I was wild with 52 .
To be honest, my first day of practice was pretty 53 . I Was put into a skinny little boat and I had no idea 54 I was doing, not to mention it was -1 out and we weren't allowed 55 gloves because we had to grip the oars. But after about two hours, I finally got the hang of it and I loved it! From then on, my entire 56 on life changed. I made a ton of friends, and I became much more physically fit. I went from sitting inside, bored and 57 , to being outside, enjoying myself every day. 58 I no longer wanted to end my life. I was a new person - self-confident and happy.
To this day, I think about 59 I heard that announcement about try-outs. If I 60 , I might not be where I am and who I am today.

Is bottled water better for you than tap? Or should you choose vitamin-enriched water? Experts say, skip it all. None of these products is likely to make you any healthier. Below, we look at four major myths about the benefits of drinking water. 16 Experts say there’s an easy way to judge.
If you are not thirsty, your fluid intake is likely “just right”.
Myth No. 1: Drink eight glasses each day.
Scientist say there’s no clear health benefit of drinking so much water a day. 17 “Nobody
really knows,” says Dr. Stanley Goldfarb, a kidney expert at the University of Pennsylvania.
Myth No. 2: Lots of water equals healthier skin.
The body is already 60 percent water. 18 Adding a few extra glasses of water each day has
a limited effect. “It’s such a tiny part of what’s in the body,” says Goldfarb. “It’s very unlikely that
one’s getting any benefit.”
Myth No. 3: 19
A more accurate statement may be: drinking water is a helpful tool for dieters. “Water is a great
strategy for dieters because it has no calories,” says Madeline Fernstrom of the University of
Pittsburgh. “So you can keep your mouth busy without food and get a sense of satisfaction.” But
water is not magical, she adds, “Other zero-calorie options such as diet sodas are fine, too.”
Myth No. 4: It’s easy to get dehydrated (脱水的)during a workout.
Dehydration sets in when a person has lost 2 percent of his or her body weight. 20 “It’s
also obvious that individuals in hot, dry climates have an increased need for water,” says Goldfarb.
“But for a walk in the park, no water bottle is necessary.”
A. So where does the standard advice come from?
B. But it’s unclear whether these changes are clinically significant.
C. So for a 200-pound man, this means losing 4 pounds of water.
D. Drinking extra water leads to weight loss.
E. Drink as much water as you can.
F. So, if you take a 200-pound man, he’s 120 pounds of water.
G. But first, how do you know if you’re drinking enough water?
At last, the boys found themselves in a pleasant park with trees providing shade and down to eat their picnic lunch.
A.to sit B.sat C.sitting D.having sat

Fred Michel is one of 7.2 million Americans who moonlight. Once a week, after his day job as medical director of a mental health center, the 40-year-old psychiatrist heads to a part-time job at a treatment center for young people. Twice a month, he travels three hours to another teenage
treatment center.
Last year, 5.4 percent of the American workforce held second jobs, according to the US Labor Department, and that looks set to increase this year.
Many workers like the safety that moonlighting provides, says Carl Hausman, the writer of
"Moonlighting: 148 Great Ways to Make Money on the Side."
The information from the US Labor Department shows that 40 percent of US moonlighters take a second job to meet household expenses or pay off debts. Others save money or buy some special things.
People also take second jobs with an eye to the future一wanting to try out a new field or gain expemence.
Michel started moonlighting when medical systems were unstable. He wanted to make sure he
wasn't tied to one system that ended up failing.
Just as the purposes for moonlighting vary, the moonlighters cross all ages and racial groups.
And they work in a variety of industries--- no longer just service, office and sale jobs.
"Technology just affects your ability to make money," Hausman says, "that makes a frequent
change in moonlighting."
As its name means, moonlighting still occurs mostly at night. And that results in some pressures.Chief among them is time.
Full-time employers could misunderstand, too. Some companies do not allow after-hour work
because they fear it will affect their employees' 9-to-5 performance.
"The primary employer is saying, `Wait, I'm paying you for the sharp, fresh, energetic you,"'
says Tom Gimbel, president and founder of LaSalle Staffing in Chicago. "If you're burning
yourself at both ends, it's going to show."
Still, the good done to the moonlighters can be great. Besides extra income, moonlighters enjoy variety, freedom and chance to do something new. They may also find their part-time jobs
strengthen what they do full time.
Besides, "it's fun," Michel says. Not only do his part-time jobs offer a chance to network, stretch his professional skills and make more money, but they also give him the variety he wouldn't find just in a full-time job.
"It's a way of pulling from the spice cabinet" he says, "and offering a little variety
throughout the day."
28. The reason why Fred Michel began to moonlight is that_______.
A. he found it exciting to do a part-time job
B .he needed to make ends meet with more money
C .he feared he would lose his present job one day
D. he felt more and more pressure from his employer
29 .Some companies don't allow their workers to moonlight because they are afraid
A. their workers can not do extra-hour work for them
B .their workers will be too tired to try their best at work
C .their workers will one day turn to some other different jobs
D. their workers will not get to work and be off work on time
30. The underlined sentence "It's a way of pulling from the spice cabinet." in the last paragraph
means
A. moonlighting gets you away from the job you don't enjoy
B .moonlighting offers you freedom to make extra money
C .moonlighting strengthens your professional skills
D. moonlighting brings you chances to do something different
31 .What is the article mainly about?
A. The ways of moonlighting. B .The reasons for moonlighting.
C .The problems with moonlighting. D. The kinds of people who moonlight.

More recent research has shown that many kinds of amphibians(两栖动物) are declining or have become extinct. Amphibians are animals, such as frogs, that live partly in water and partly on land. And they have been around for over 350 million years. They have 41 three mass extinctions, including the extinction of the dinosaurs. Why are they dying out now?
The most serious aspect of amphibian loss, however, goes beyond the amphibians themselves. Scientists are beginning to think about what amphibian 42 means for the planet as a whole. If the earth is becoming unlivable for amphibians, is it also becoming unlivable for other kinds of animals and human beings as well?
Scientists now believe that amphibian decline is due to several environmental factors. One of these factors is the 43 of habitat, the natural area where an animal lives. Amphibians are very 44 to changes in their habitat. If they cannot find the right conditions, they will not lay their eggs. These days, as wild areas are covered with houses, roads, farms, or factories, many kinds of amphibians are no longer laying eggs.
There are a number of other factors in amphibian decline. Pollution is one of them. In many industrial areas, air pollution has 45 the rain, which then falls on ponds and kills the frogs that live there. In farming areas, the heavy use of 46 on crops has also killed off amphibians. Another factor is that air pollution has led to 47 levels of ultraviolet (UV) light. This endangers amphibians, which seem to be 48 sensitive to UV light.
All these reasons for the disappearance of amphibians are also good reasons for more general 49 . These factors affect human beings, too.

Things to Remember When You’re Having a Bad Day
Even the hardest days contain lessons that will help you be a better person. Feeling down? Consider these things to remember when you’re having a bad day.
l No one promised life would be perfect.
36 Don’t base your happiness on meeting every expectation you set for yourself. It is good to be ambitious, but you’ll never be perfect. If you expect otherwise, your life will be filled with disappointments.
l 37
Trees that are slow to grow bear the best fruit. Don’t kid yourself into thinking success will come quickly. It isn’t easy to be patient, but anything worth doing requires time. 38 .
l Without hard times, you wouldn’t appreciate the good ones.
Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to give up, that is strength. 39 . It is hard to find much to smile about when you fail, but how else would you improve yourself? If you look at failures as a part of your growing process, you’ll stay positive and follow your goals for as long as it takes.
l It’s OK to cry sometimes.
Do not apologize for crying. Without this feeling, we are only robots. Don’t be afraid of crying. 40 Instead, it is an acceptable way to let go of your depressed feelings. If you let those feelings build up without release, you’ll have a much harder time dealing with them later.
A. Don’t get sad if you lose.
B. It isn’t a sign of weakness.
C. Success doesn’t happen overnight.
D. It’s not OK to worry now and then.
E. Don’t compare your life with others’.
F. Remember: Rome was not built in a day.
G. If you look for perfection, you’ll never be content.

Generally speaking, government regulations normally ban anything from smoking in public places to parking in certain zones. But officials in the Brazilian town of Biritiba Mirim, 70km (45miles) east of Sao Paulo, have gone far beyond that. They plan to prohibit residents from dying early because the local cemetery(墓地) has reached full capacity.
There’s no more room to bury the dead, they can’t be cremated(火化) and laws forbid a new cemetery. So the mayor has proposed a strange solution: outlaw death. Mayor Roberto Pereira says the bill is meant as a protest against federal regulations that prohibit new or expanded cemeteries in preservation areas. “They have not taken local demands into consideration”, he claims.
A 2003 decree(法令) by Brazil’s National Environment Council forbids burial grounds in protected areas. Mr. Pereira wants to build a new cemetery, but the project has been stopped because 98% of Biritiba Mirim is considered as a preservation area.
Biritiba Mirim, a town of 28,000 inhabitants, not only wants to prohibit residents from passing away. The bill also calls on people to take care of their health in order to avoid death. “I haven’t got a job, nor am I healthy. And now they say I can’t die. That’s ridiculous,” Amarido do Prado, an unemployed resident said.
The city council is expected to vote on the regulation next week. “Of course the bill is laughable, illegal, and will never be approved,” said Gilson Soares de Campos, an assistant of the mayor. “But can you think of a better resolution to persuade the government to change the environmental decree that is prohibiting us from building a new cemetery?” The bill states that “offenders will be held responsible for their acts.” However, it does not say what the punishment will be.
32.What is the bill to be proposed by the officials in Biritiba Mirim?

D. Prohibiting residents from dying early.

A. The officials in Biritiba Mirim have made these regulations.
B. The officials in Biritiba Mirim have been to many places around the world.
C. The bill to be proposed by officials in Biritiba Mirim is much too unexpected.
D. The officials in Biritiba Mirim have built too many cemeteries in their town.
34.What’s the attitude of the mayor of Biritiba Mirim towards the federal regulations?
A. He remains silent about them.
B. He gives strong backing to them.
C. He objects to them.
D. He asks the residents for advice on them.
35.Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A. The mayor of the town wants to build a new cemetery against federal regulation.
B. The residents of the town sing high praise for the bill.
C. No better resolution of the problems has been thought out.
D. The government is going to change the environmental decree.
“I honestly have no idea how that cat got up there. It’s a hundred—foot—metal pole. There’s no way he climbed that thing,”Jim said to the worried woman. It wasn’t even her cat,but she was passing by and saw it.immediately calling the fire—station to come to save it.Jim saw a lot of strange things as a fireman, often sad or upsetting things, but this was new.

“How’d he get up there?”
Jim shrugged, similarly puzzled.“Do you suppose we could get the blanket and convince him to jump?”
Dave shrugged in response.“I don’t see why not.”
Jim looked up at the black mass on the top of the flagpole, the American nag waving proudly beneath him.It was definitely a cat,and he regarded the people gathered below as if they were his subjects(臣民)and he their king, his yellow eyes scanning his surroundings with apparent disinterest.
When the blanket was spread out below the cat,Jim and Dave began striking the flagpole. The cat looked down, and then gazed into the sky as if it were looking for something.Jim and Dave followed his gaze.Suddenly, out of the clear sky, appeared a dark figure. The figure swooped(俯冲)low toward the flagpole. It was an eagle! As it got closer, the cat leaped down the pole swiftly onto the ground, and then got lost in the bushes.
Jim,Dave, and the old woman were left with their mouths open. They all agreed it was the best way to get it down.
