高三英语下学期下册试题

Suppose you discovered an unusual animal, one not described in any present zoology book. How would you begin to identify a creature that mayor may notexist? Or suppose you came upon an animal that scientists thought had died thousands of years ago. These are exactly the kinds of puzzling situations that cryptozoologists deal with every day.

Crypto comes from the Greek words kryptos, which means hidden, and zoology, the study of animals. Of course, cryptozoologists must acquire a thorough and complete knowledge of all kinds of animals, both living and extinct, such as dinosaurs. In addition, they must be able to tell the difference between a real discovery and a case of mistaken identity.

You may have heard of people who claim they’ve seen the Loch Ness Monster or Bigfoot. Most crypto-zoologists doubt that proof of either Nessie or Bigfoot will ever be found. But they have many discoveries of 1ess impressive creatures, like the pseudoryx, to investigate(调查).

The pseudoryx, from the Vietnamese rain forest, looks like a goat, but it is really more closely related to the ox. The evidence for the pseudoryx was pieced together from the villagers’ collection of bones, and hides. Even though the researchers could not find an actual pseudoryx, a talented Vietnamese taxidermist was able to reconstruct a model from the parts the researchers brought to him. Scientists also analyzed the genetic material from a pseudoryx’s bones. Their analysis confirmed that the pseudoryx was certainly a unique new species, unlike any that had been identified before.

Other crypto-zoologists are presently working to prove the existence of a small ape called the orang-pen-dek on the island of Sumatra. Still others are looking into sightings of the moa, a flightless bird which was thought to be extinct for hundreds of years.

New types of animals are continuing to be discovered. The crypto-zoologist is constantly analyzing the facts and trying to solve the mysteries. For every mystery that is solved, a new one is likely to appear.

1From the second paragraph, we know that          .

Acrypto-zoology is a science coming from Greece

2Which of the following is true about the pseudoryx?

AAn artificial copy was made from the parts collected.

BEvidence from the villagers helped to find a real pseudoryx.

CThe genetic material is compared with that of a goat and an ox.

DIt’s doubtful whether pseudoryx is different from the existing animals.

3What is the best title of the passage?

    AUncovered truth in animals

    BLooking for unknown animals

    CCrypto-zoology--a new field of science

When Jane put out the idea of homeschooling to her parents, the first reaction they gave was, “You are cutting the child off the world.’’ “Did the child really get cut off or did the child socialize better?”

The moment we hear of homeschooling, we think the child will have no opportunities to interact with peers. However, in my friend’s opinion, we forget that when attending a regular school, the child is not into socializing all the while. The child is restricted to so many other activities. Studies take a major role in a child’s life. The child hardly has the time to interact at school.

The child might be meeting and studying along with many peers; however, how many kids interact with all the kids in a class? But in homeschooling system, as my friend mentioned, the kid has all the time and can plan his day accordingly. During the day the child studies just like other school-going kids but with no burden of homework and project work, the child has so much free time in the evening as to effectively interact and play with peers. The quality time the child spends in education is really impressive.

Homeschooled kids have the opportunity to socialize more often as they have a lot of time in their hands. They can also make socializing a regular habit. Just as my friend said, her child goes to a neighboring park almost every day and has a set of friends who go there daily. Other children get back home to finish off homework and project work whereas her child who is already through with studies gets the opportunity to spend time with family members.

When I heard this, I really felt how lucky the child was. Definitely the child had a better opportunity to socialize when compared with my kid. However, I might not consider homeschooling for my kid, as I am so used to the conventional schooling system and feel regular schooling the safest bet. zxlmm

Money spent on advertising is money spent as well as any I know of. It serves directly to assist a rapid distribution of goods at reasonable pricesthereby establishing a firm home market and so making it possible to provide for export at competitive prices. By drawing attention to new ideas it helps enormously to raise standards of living. By helping to increase demand it ensures an increased need of many services: Without advertisements your daily newspaper would cost four times as muchthe price of your television license would need to be doubledand travel by bus or tube would cost more.

And perhaps most important of alladvertising provides a guarantee of reasonable value in the products and services you buy. Apart from the fact the twenty-seven Acts of Parliament govern the terms of advertisingno regular advertiser dare promote a product that fails to live up to the promise of his advertisements. He might fool some people for a little while through misleading advertising. He will not do so for longfor mercifully the public has the good sense not to buy the inferior article more than once. If you see an article consistently advertised it is the surest proof I know that the article does what is claimed for it and that it represents good value.

Advertising does more for the material benefit of the community than any other force I can think of.

There is one more point I feel I ought to touch on. Recently I heard a well-known television personality declare that he was against advertising because it persuades rather than informs. He was drawing excessively fine distinctions. Of course advertising seeks to persuade.

If its message were confined merely to information-and that in itself would be difficult if not impossible to achieve for even a detail such as the choice of the colour of a shirt is subtly persuasive-advertising would be so boring that no one would pay any attention. But perhaps that is what the well-known television personality wants.

A. Securing greater fame.                           B. Providing more jobs.

C. Enhancing living standards.                    D. Reducing newspaper cost.

63.The author thinks that the well-known TV personality is____.

A.very precise in passing his judgment on advertising

B.interested in nothing but the buyer's attention

C.correct in telling the difference between persuasion and information

D. obviously partial in his views on advertising

64.In the author's opinion______.

A.advertising can seldom bring material benefit to man by providing information

B.advertising informs people of new ideas rather than wins them over

C.there is nothing wrong with advertising in persuading the buyer

D.the buyer is not interested in getting information from an advertisement

65.What attitude does the author hold for advertising?

A.Negative.       B.Positive.     C.Ridiculous.        D.Not stated.

There’s no doubt that our character has a profound effect on our future. What we must remember, however, is not merely how powerful character is in influencing our fate (命运), but how powerful we are in shaping our own character and, therefore, our own fate. Character may determine our fate, but character is not determined by fate.

It’s a common mistake to think of character as something that is fully formed and fixed very early in life. It calls to mind old proverbs like “A leopard can’t change its spots” and “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”

This perspective that our character is “etched in stone” is supported by a great deal of modern psychology emphasizing self-acceptance. As Popeye says, “I am what I am.” The hidden message is: Don’t expect me to be more, better, or different.

Finally, these views of humanity totally undervalue the lifelong potential for growth that comes with the power of reflection and choice.

How depressing it would be to believe that we can’t choose to be better, more honest, more respectful, more responsible, and more caring. None of us should give up the personal seeking to improve our character. Not because we’re bad, we don’t have to be sick to get better, but because we’re not as good as we could be.

There are so many things in life we can’t control, whether we’re beautiful or smart, whether we had good parents or bad, whether we grew up with affirmation or negation. It’s inspiring to remember that nothing but moral will power is needed to make us better.

No, it isn’t easy. But if we make a great effort to become more aware of the habits of heart and mind that drive our behavior, we can begin to place new emphasis on our higher values so that we become what we want our children to think we are.

12. What is the best title of the passage?

A. We shape our own character.

B. Character determines our fate.

C. Character is fully formed and fixed.

D. We must meet what our children need.

13. The author agrees that _____________.

A. a leopard can't change its spots

B. in life we must attach importance to self-acceptance

C. we shouldn’t expect us to be more different

D. character is not fully formed and fixed very early

14. In the author’s opinion, which of the following is TRUE?

A. We can’t choose to be better.

B. We should seek to improve our character for we’re bad enough.

C. We should value our lifelong potential for growth.

D. We should make choices constantly.

15. What can we infer from the passage?

A. It is not difficult to improve ourselves.

B. We must try our best to be as good as possible.

C. Our children should copy our behavior.

D. We should control as many things as possible in life.

A study of art history might be a good way to learn more about a culture than is possible to learn in general history classes. Most typical history courses concentrate on politics, economics and war. But art history focuses on much more than this because art reflects not only the political values of a people, but also religious beliefs, emotions and psychology. In addition, information about the daily activities of our ancestors can be provided by art. In short, art expresses the essential qualities of a time and a place, and a study of it clearly offers us a deeper understanding than can be found in most history books.

In history books, objective (客观的) information about the political life of a country is presented; that is, facts about politics are given, but opinions are not expressed. Art, on the other hand, is subjective: it reflects emotions and opinions. The great Spanish painter Francisco Goya was perhaps the first truly “political” artist. In his well-known painting The Third of May, 1808, he criticized the Spanish government for its abuse of power over people.

In the same way, art can reflect a culture’s religious beliefs. For hundreds of years in Europe, religious art had been almost the only type of art that existed. Churches and other religious buildings were filled with paintings that described people and stories from the Bible. Although most people couldn’t read, they could still understand the Bible stories in the pictures on church walls. By contrast (对比), one of the main characteristics of art in the Middle East was (and still is) its absence of human and animal images. This reflects the Islamic belief that statues are not holy.

1. Which of the following statements has the closest meaning to the underlined sentence?

A. General history only focuses on politics.

B. Art history shows us nothing but the political values.

C. General history concerns only religious beliefs, emotions and psychology.

D. Art history gives us an insight (洞察力) into the essential qualities of a time and a place.

2. Art is subjective in that __________.

A. it can easily arouse people’s anger about their government

B. it only reflects people’s anger or sadness about social problems.

C. a personal and emotional view of history is presented through it.

D. artists were or are religious, who reflect only the religious aspect of the society.

3. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Francisco Goya expressed his religious belief in his painting.

B. In history books political views of people are entirely presented.

C. For centuries in Europe, painters had only painted on walls of churches.

D. In the Middle East, you can hardly find animal or human figures on church walls.

4. What’s the main topic of the passage?

A. The development of art history.

B. What we can learn from art.

C. The influence of artists on art history.

D. The difference between general history and art history.
