Cyclist Alain Such has been dropped from the Ingotel cycling team for two years after a positive drug test at the Institute of drug Free Sport. “ I was flabbergasted.” Said Didier Garcia, from Team Ingotel. “Alain joined our team last month and we had no idea that he was being examined.”
It’s a story that has become more and more familiar in recent years. Dr. Mohammad Farnood, a leading sports scientist from Cairo, Egypt, said, “ It is thought that some athletes will look for other ways to improve performance in addition to using drugs.”
However, it has not always been against the law. In the Olympics in 1904, Thomas Hicks won the marathon after using drugs in the middle of the race. In fact, the first one didn’t make him feel better for long, so he was given another and, as a result, he fell down soon after finishing and knew nothing. Another one may well have killed him.
Things are very different today. Some scientists are considering the possibilities of using genetic engineering to further develop athletes’ abilities. “If it works with no risk of discovering,” said Dr Farnood, “ then it’s likely to become common practice for athletes.”
Researchers are looking at the possibility of identifying “athletic” genes and correcting weak ones. Put into practice, this would make a person healthier and stronger. Once scientists understand what genes of top athletes look like , it might even become possible to identify “athletic” genes in young people, and then money could be spent on children who have the most promising genes.
“People are beginning to recognize that genetics can in many ways do good to our society, for example in saving lives and in creating better quality food for people.” Dr Farnood says. “ So, is it fair to use genetic engineering in sport? You could ask if it’s fair for some runners to use the latest scientifically developed footwear. The key question is whether it’s available to everyone.”

How to Become a Good Family Member
Do you feel like you don’t fit in within your family, or maybe you do but want to know how you can be an even better member in the family? Then try some of these steps to see if you could be doing more to keep your home life happy!
61. ____________
How old are you? Do you live with your parents? Do you live alone? With a child? Do you have flatmates? If you have brothers and sisters (similar relatives), what’s your age in relation to theirs? Are you the baby, or the role-model? By asking yourself these questions and finding out the answers to them, you will get to know your position in your family and the part you should play in your family.
62. _____________
What do you have at your disposal (支配)----- money, materials, skills, knowledge and so on that you can use to help your family overall? Even if you are 10 years old with no financial income, you probably know how to wash dishes, put your own clothes in the laundry basket, and entertain your little brother/sister or at the very least avoid annoying your older brothers, sisters and parents too much.
63. ______________
If you are a parent, your children need a lot from you. If you are a child or teen, your parents need a fair amount too. What do the other people in your home need you to do? If your parents ask you to take the rubbish out, a good family member does so. Similarly, if you have a sister who needs your companion, an uncle who needs a bit of time alone every Saturday morning, or a struggling mother who could use your help with the rent or the dinner, a good family member will do what they can to relieve these burdens.
64. ______________
A big source of conflict between teens and their parents occurs when parents don’t know what their teenagers expect of them; a teenager may want more freedom and independence, and the ability to control their life to a greater degree. However, if they don’t communicate this with their parents, they are unable to negotiate(商议) for it. Younger children may feel the same, and parents or other family members may have expectations of younger family members that they haven’t conveyed, either. Make sure others in your family know that you’re willing to do a little give-and-take.
65. ______________
Being nice to the family you live with is only part of it; make an effort to learn more about family members, and make sure you call them from time to time, or send out the occasional email. Be available not just for your younger brothers and sisters, but your cousins, nieces and nephews too. Send out Christmas presents and cards, and make an effort to remember birthdays. Don’t let your goodness end at home.

How long has 3-D technology been around? Most of us might think of crowds of teenagers in a 1950’s movie house watching Bwana Devil in 3-D. But 3-D technology made its first appearance on the scene in 1838 with the first stereoscope(体视镜). And the first actual 3-D movie was a 1903 film called Le Ariveed’un Train.
Although it has such a long history, the technology has still remained based on one simple principle-----to make 3-D effects you must find a way to project two slightly different pictures to each eye. Modern 3-D technology works by rapidly flickering(闪动) two versions of the movie and projecting them onto each eye. The brain does the rest of the work, combining the two pictures together into one and giving the show the appearance of depth, the third dimension.
But does this exposure, especially long exposures, cause harm to the child’s developing brain and visual system? Unfortunately, long-term studies on new flicker digital 3-D technology and children aren’t yet available. We do not know if regular or daily 3-D viewing over years affects the developing visual system, although older 3-D methods basically do the same thing and are not considered harmful.
The question of possible harm in modern 3-D use in TV is really based on two facts: the amount of time children will now be watching 3-D TV each day and the sensitivity some children show in reaction to 3-D viewing. It is difficult to make actual lab studies of longer term 3-D viewing in children because of the possible harm of the experiment. Researchers will have to wait until 3-D TV technology is already in the marketplace for a number of years, then check heavy 3-D TV watchers and compare them with non-watchers.
With a 3-D television technology in the home, we will soon be able to answer the question of whether or not longer and more frequent periods of 3-D exposure cause more changes in the visual system. We may find that the bigger problem is the introduction of a new technology that leads to even more time spent on TV rather than playing outdoors.
8. According to the text, 3-D technology ______
A. was refused by people when it first appeared.
B. will soon change the way we watch TV.
C. does no good to our visual system.
D. has a history of nearly 200 years.

10. What’s the method suggested in paragraph 4?
A. To wait and see B. To carry out lab studies
C. To stop making 3-D movies D. To improve 3-D technology
11. The author’s purpose in writing the text is to _______
A. ask children not to watch 3-D movies
B. discuss if 3-D viewing is harmful to children.
C. introduce the advantages of 3-D technology.
D. predict the development of 3-D technology.

Many people in high school cannot wait to go to college and leave their hometown behind. Questions arise, though, when it comes to all of the decisions involved in choosing a college.
One of the first considerations may be finance. State and public colleges are often the least expensive. Of
ten, though, the better colleges are private and more expensive. It is sad when gifted students cannot attend a college of their choice just for financial reasons.
Another major factor is location. Whether the college is in a small town or large city can have a major impact on its activities. A water lover probably will be more comfortable spending four years near an ocean or a lake. Those who cannot tolerate heat will probably be more comfortable at a northern college. Distance from home may also come into consideration. If family is a top priority, that person should stay close to home; on the other hand, if independence is desired, a campus farther from home would be more appropriate.
School size also plays a major role in the decision process. If you want to get to know your teachers, a small college is suitable. For those of you who consider yourself a "people person" and want a wide range of activities, a large college is more fitting. Your area of interest is another factor to consider in the decisionmaking process if you want to get the most from your education. The whole point of college is to learn what is of interest to you.
Crucially, one must first take into consideration the colleges by which you can realistically be accepted. An Ivy League school for an average student would probably not be a good match. Similarly, an average school for an aboveaverage student would not work well. The college should provide enough of a challenge for the student to work hard. Although there may not be the perfect college out there, there probably will be one that is close. Those who cannot find a suitable college are probably not looking hard enough.
25.When it comes to going to college the author thinks ______.
A.students will become homesick
B.students are unwilling to leave their home
C.economic situation is the first to consider
D.students are eager to attend their ideal university
26.What does the underlined part a "people person" in the passage mean?

Autumn blues? Let the sunshine in.
Falling leaves, withering flowers, cold winds, faint sunshine. 36 Spirits can be low.
People who suffer from "the autumn blues" often are extremely exhausted, lack energy, need more sleep, feel increased appetite and gain weight.
"The exact cause of this condition, often called seasonal depression or seasonal affective disorder (SAD), is not known yet," says Chen Jue, associate professor at Shanghai Mental Health Center."But recent studies indicate that weather change is influential and strongly suggest that this condition is caused by changes in the availability of sunlight."
One theory is that with decreased exposure to sunlight, the biological clock that controls mood, sleep, and hormones is delayed, running more slowly in winter. 37 .Another theory is that brain chemicals that transmit(传输) information between nerves may be changed in individuals with SAD.It is believed that exposure to light can correct these imbalances.
“ 38 Remember, spring always lives in your heart," Chen says.
Here are some tips to deed with autumn depression.
