September 21, 2050----At a press conference today it was announced that the first tourist heading for Mars will be the 38-year-old US businessman Patrick Clifford. He will leave the earth in the launching window of June 2052 and set his foot on the surface of Mars in November, together with the other 6 astronauts assigned for the mission to further explore the planet.
Patrick has now two years of training ahead of him to get ready for the trip. Not only will he spend five months in getting to Mars, but another 600 days there before he can go back home. Patrick was of course very excited, “ This has been my dream since I was four, and seeing the first man on Mars 20 years ago made me realize that it was possible.”
To be able to pay the $ 1. 3 billion for his ticket for the trip Patrick sold his majority stake (股份) in the company his father had built. “I know that my father would have been proud of me if he had still been alive today, he knew what this means to me”, says Patrick. There is no risk though that you will find Patrick begging in your street corner when he comes back, but it is said that he was paid twice as much for his part of the company.
So, how is he going to spend his 600 days on the red planet? “Well, since I don’t have a job when I get back after selling the company, I have plenty of time to come up with a new business idea”, he says and laughs. If he brings a shovel(铁锹)he can start building the first hotel there, but maybe he shouldn’t expect too many guests until someone can offer a cheaper ticket.

23.What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Patrick is an optimistic man
B. A total of six people will go to Mars
C. Patrick’s father felt excited at the news
D. Patrick will spend all his money on the trip
Why I’ve taken a break from holidays
It is now close to four years since I last took a holiday. This is because I have come to the conclusion, over the course of my adult life, that I am not very good at it. You might think this sounds like saying you’re not very good at drinking tea or listening to music. What could possibly be difficult about the natural act of putting your working life on hold for a couple of weeks and going somewhere warm to do nothing?
I was a model holidaymaker as a kid. However, the problems started during my twenties. A trip to the south of France was ended after just two days, mainly because I had an urge to check my e-mails. Similarly, my honeymoon was cut short by 48 hours—not because my wife and I weren’t enjoying ourselves, but because we were missing our cats.
So what is my problem? On the surface, I’m probably a bit of a homebody. And I just find the pressure of being on holiday too severe: it always feels like having a gun held to my head and being forced to have fun. Somehow, packing a list of possessions and meeting a scheduled flight has none of the excitement of suddenly deciding to take a day off and driving somewhere for the fun of it.
Thankfully, I’m not alone. This summer, most of my friends have decided not to have a break. And a recent survey (调查) proved the downside of holidays, with the results showing that nearly two thirds of people found that the calming effects of a holiday wore off within 24 hours, as stress levels returned to normal. And this year The Idler magazine published its Book of Awful Holidays. Here you will find a list of the five most ecologically-damaging vacations it’s possible to take, along with 50 painful holiday experiences voted for on The Idler
website.
What interests me is what the concept of a “holiday” says about our lives. For me, the point of living is to have a life you enjoy for 52 weeks a year. The more I like my life and the better I structure it, the less I want to go away. Maybe I’m an unusual person for not liking holidays, but I just feel the time when I’m not working is too valuable to waste on them.
67. The events the author describes in the second paragraph show ______.
A. how hard he has tried to enjoy holidays B. how badly he behaves when he is on holiday
C. his lack of enthusiasm for being on holiday D. his fear of something bad when he is on holiday
68. What does the author think of holidays?
A. They are often well organized in order to please other people.
B. He feels embarrassed when other people are having fun but he isn’t.
C. He tends to be made responsible for too much of the organization of them.
D. They are less enjoyable than breaks that have not been planned in advance.
69. The underlined word “downside” in the fourth paragraph probably means ______.
A. absence B. damage C. disadvantage D. conflict
70. What is the author’s attitude towards “taking a holiday”?
A. Disapproving. B. Supportive. C. Neutral. D. Unconcerned.
There was a man who played the piano in a small bar. There were not too many16 , but because he was a good piano player, some people17 came in every night just to hear him play. But one night, a patron (老主顾) told him he didn’t want to hear him play but to sing a song.
The man said, “I have never 18that before in public. I think I’m19at playing the piano.”
But the customer20. He told the waiter, “I’m 21listening to the piano day after day. I want to hear something new and I want that guy to sing.”

You, too, have skills and 30. You may not feel as if your “talent” is particularly31, but it may be better than you think! And with persistence (坚持), most skills can be32. Besides, you may as well have no ability at all if you sit on whatever talent you33! The 34is not “What ability do I have that is useful?” It is 35 “How will I use whatever ability I have?”.

There has been a technological revolution where kindles, e-books, and various online reading apps have taken over the world. Is reading a print book out of date? Well, not exactly.
There are so many wonderful factors involved with reading a print copy of the book. I remember the excitement of going to the bookstore with my mom when I was in elementary school. The feel of sitting down in the book store and selecting the books I wanted to read was just so much fun! I think that reading paperback books has its own charm and excitement that cannot be replaced by an electronic book. Holding the physical copy of the book in my hands, and turning over each page makes the reading experience so much more real and memorable.
Admittedly, e-books seem to be more convenient than print books, Purchasing an e-book can take place in seconds and these books are often priced less expensively than print copy books. With e-books, there likely isn’t going to be a storage problem, unless the device has a limit on how many books can be purchased. Then again, in order to read e-books one must have a particular device-tablet, iPad, kindle or laptop to read it on. Thus, an additional payment has to be made in order to read e-books, whereas reading print copies does not involve any extra device.
Print books never actually stopped leading the charge, considering that e-book sales have never made up more than a third of all book sales. And although they rose to that number extremely quickly--Amazon, only introduced the kindle in 2007-the majority of all books sold has always been print. The reality is that there is absolutely no reason print and e-books can’t coexist in the book market, but print books may carry the day.
33.What advantage do e-books have according to the passage?
A. The reading experience is more real
B. There is no storage problem at all
C. Purchasing them takes less time
D. They are very priceless
34.What can we infer about the book market?
A. E-book sales make up more than 1/3 of all book sales
B. E-book sales have never surpassed print book sales
C. Amazon occupies most of the market
D. Print books and e-books can’t coexist
35.What’s the author’s attitude towards the future of print books?
A. Worried B. Optimistic
C. Indifferent D. Doubtful

Why does cream go bad faster than butter? Some researchers think they have the answer, and it comes down to the structure of the food, not its chemical composition-a find
ing that could help break away from some chemicals. Cream and butter contain pretty much the same things, so why cream should go bad much faster has been a problem. Both are small globules(小球)of one liquid which spreads throughout another. The difference lies in what’s in the globules and what’s in the surrounding liquid, says Brocklehurst, who led the research. In cream, fatty globules drift about in a sea of water. In butter, globules of a watery roads are locked away in a sea of fat. The bacteria (细菌)which make the food go bad prefer to live in the watery areas of the mixture. “This means that in cream, the bacteria are free to grow throughout the mixture,” he
says, “when in butter, the bacteria are locked away in locked places buried deep in the sea of fat. Trapped in this way, those colonies cannot spread and rapidly run out. They also slowly poison themselves with their waste products.” “In butter, you get a self-limiting system which stops the bacteria growing.” says Brocklehurst. The researchers are already working with food companies eager to see if their products can be made to stand bacterial attack through changes of the food’s structure.
Brockelehurst believes it will be possible to make something used in salad cream, for instance, more like that in butter. The key will be to do this while keeping the salad cream liquid and not turning it into a solid state.
32. The significance(意义)of Brocklehurst’s rescarch is that __________.
A. it discovered small globules in both cream and butter
B. it suggested a way to keep some foods fresh without using some chemicals
C. it showed the secret of how bacteria increase in cream and butter
D. it found that cream and butter share the same chemical composition
33. According to Brocklehurst, we can keep cream
fresh by ________.
A. changing its structure B. killing the bacteria
C. reducing its water D. removing its fat
34. The underlined word “colonies” refers to ________.
A. tiny globules B. watery regions
C. the surrounding liquid D. bacteria society
35. Commercial use of the research finding will be possible if salad cream can be made to stand bacterial attack ________.
A. by changing its chemical composition
B. by turning it into a solid lump
C. while its liquid form remains
D. while keeping its structure unchanged

A good laugh is like a mild workout. It exercises the muscles, gets the blood flowing, decreases blood pressure and improves sleep patterns and the immune system. 36 .
Don’t take life too seriously. We all have obstacles in life and we all make mistakes. 37 In fact, if you can laugh light-heartedly at your own fault, you’ll find that you give yourself that extra happiness and confidence increase that can get you over any obstacle.
Find the humor in a bad situation. Sure , there are some situations where you are really sad. 38 The next time you feel the stress levels rising, take a minute to think about the funny side of the situation and laugh over the things you cannot control. This will lower your blood pressure, blood sugar levels and heart rate.
Remind yourself of funny moments from the past. Perhaps a friend told you a great joke the other day or your children or pets did something amusing. 39 Sometimes just reliving a funny moment can cause the endorphins(内啡肽), natural painkillers, to kick in.
40 As the saying goes, laughter is contagious(会传染的). So make a point of seeking out positive people who aren’t afraid to laugh at themselves and are good at finding humor in life’s situations. Young children are especially skilled at finding laughter and joy in everyday moments.
A. Take control over your emotions.
B. There is no reason to blame yourself for it.
C. However, most situations in life have funny sides.
D. Surround yourself with fun people who like to laugh a lot.
E. The following are some ways to enjoy more laughter and joy in your life.
F.Studies show that people with pets have lower levels of depression and stress.
G.Call on these memories frequently, especially when feeling sad, angry or
stressed.
Internet addiction is a clinical disorder marked by out-of-control Internet use. A research team led by Hao Lei of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Wuhan carried out brain scans of 35 men and women aged between 14 and 21.

Specialized MRI brain scans showed changes in the white matter of the brain, the part that contains nerve fibres in those classed as Internet addicts (对网络入迷的人), compared with non-addicts.
There was evidence of disruption (中断) to connections in nerve fibres linking brain areas involved in emotions, decision-making, and self-control.
Dr. Hao Lei and colleagues write in Plos One:
“Overall, our findings indicate that IAD has abnormal white matter integrity(完整) in brain regions involving emotional generation and processing, executive(行政的)attention, decision-making and cognitive(认知的) control.
“The results also suggest that IAD may share psychological and neural mechanisms (机制) with other types of substance addiction and impulse control disorders.”
Prof. Gunter Schumann, chair in biological psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College, London, said similar findings have been found in video game addicts. He told the BBC, “For the first time two studies show changes in the neuronal(神经元的) connections between brain areas as well as changes in brain function in people who are frequently using the Internet or video games.”
Commenting on the Chinese study, Dr. Henrietta Bowden-Jones, psychiatrist and honorary senior lecturer at Imperial College London, said the research was “groundbreaking”.
She added: “We are finally being told what doctors suspected for some time, and that white matter abnormalities(反常) in the brain are present not only in addictions where substances are involved but also in behavioural ones such as Internet addiction.”
She said further studies with larger numbers of subjects were needed to confirm the findings.
66. The researchers found 17 persons addicted to be Internet by_______.
A. asking them questions B. comparing their brains
C. watching their behavior D. giving them medical tests
67. What did the experts find from brain scans?
A. The color of the white matter is different. B. The white matter of the brain has changed.
C. The nerve fibres stop working completely.
D. The nerve fibres don't control their actions.
68. Prof. Gunter Schumann would agree that _______.
A. Internet addicts are similar to video game addicts
B. Internet addiction is different from drug addiction
C. the new study doesn't agree with other findings
D. similar studies have never been conducted before
69. According to Dr. Henrietta Bowden-Jones, the Chinese study ______ .
A. is of no practical value B. needs further evidence
C. is of great significance D. confirms previous studies
70. What can be the best title of the passage?
A. Internet Addiction B. Keep away from Internet
C. Internet Addiction Disorder D. Web Addicts Have Brain Changes
