The Puritans (清教徒) get a bad reputation in America—especially when it comes to alcohol.
Mayflower, the first ship that came over from England to Massachusetts Bay, actually carried more beer than water. In fact the Founding Fathers of America liked a drink—Samuel Adams was a partner in his father’s brewery, and Thomas Jefferson was famous for importing European wines.
Early Americans took a healthful small drink for breakfast, whiskey was a typical lunchtime drink, ale (麦芽酒) accompanied supper and the day ended with another drink called nightcap. Most Americans in 1790 consumed an average of 5. 8 gallons of pure alcohol a year. In 1830, consumption reached 7. 1 gallons a year and alcoholism was starting to have a serious influence on communities. Women and children might be in physical danger if the man of the house began drinking. If he became ill or lost his job through drinking, there was no social safety net to support or protect his family. Eventually, alcoholism was being treated as a disease.
By the late 19th Century, support for Prohibition, banning the manufacture and sale of alcohol, was powerful. The first arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol was in 1897. On 16 January 1919, Prohibition was set into law. However, by the 1930s when American economy was experiencing a hard time it was widely believed that making alcohol legal again would provide badly-needed jobs and taxes. So in February of 1933, Prohibition was ended. Still, Prohibition had a great influence on alcohol drinking in this country. In 1955, Americans drank an average of 2.3 gallons of pure alcohol a year. The Prohibition movement was still quite strong after Prohibition ended and it led to a lot of local prohibition on alcohol.
The American presidency has done a lot to rehabilitate alcohol and make it respectable again. Presidents Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama can all be seen on film drinking socially and making official toasts with international celebrities.

A. Their ancestors came to America to sell alcohol.

33. In what way was an alcoholic’s family affected by alcoholism?
A. His family couldn’t afford the drink.
B. His family might suffer financially.
C. His wife and children might become ill.
D. His family ought not be treated equally.
34. What can be learned about Prohibition in America?
A. It came into law in the 19th century. B. It discouraged alcohol drinking.
C. Its effect disappeared after its removal. D. It failed to forbid drunk driving.
35. The passage mainly talks about__________.
A. the brief history of alcohol drinking in America

By the logic(逻辑)of geography, the continent of Australia should have been populated with Asians. Instead, by an accident of history, Australia has been mainly populated with Westerners.
Sadly, no major Australian newspaper or expert commented. This made me aware that Australians are reluctant to face Australia's painful new geopolitical realities.
Against this background, the release of the Asian Century White Paper is timely. It should provide a sharp wake-up call to the Australian population that Australia's destiny(命运)is now firmly tied to Asia. Julia Gillard is right in saying, "The transformation of the Asian region into the economic powerhouse of the world is not only unstoppable, it is gathering pace."
One truly impressive part of the paper is the data it provides on Asia's rise. It notes, for example, that "in the past 20 years, China and India have almost tripled(增三倍)their share of the global economy and increased their economic size almost six times over. By 2025, the region as a whole will account for almost half the world's output."
In this Asian century, as Western power gets weak steadily, Australia will be left "beached" alone as the only Western country (together with New Zealand) in Asia. Twenty-two million Australians will have to learn to deal with 3.5 billion Asians with great care and sensitivity.
Ignorance(无知)about Asia could prove to be fatal(致命的)for Australia's long-term future. This is why the report is right in focusing on Australian misunderstanding of Asia.
Sadly, this kind of terrible ignorance may be a result of Australian education. The report says, “Only a small proportion of Year 12 students study anything about Asia in the subjects of history, literature, geography, economics, politics and the arts under existing state-based curriculums." Worse, only 5 per cent of each Australian groups study any kind of Asian language.
Learning Asian languages would open windows to Asian cultural and political sensitivities. The time for Australians to think deeply about their Asian destiny has arrived. The sooner Australia adjusts to its new Asian destiny, the less painful the adjustment will prove to be.
| Title: It's (71) to accept our place in Asian region | |
| (72) | (73) speaking, Australia is close to Asia, yet few Australians are willing to face Australia's new geopolitical (74) . |
| Release of the white paper | Aim: To tell Australians that their (75) definitely has much to do with Asia. Cause: Asia has (76) the economic powerhouse of the world. (77) : China and India have tripled their share of the global economy and the region will account for half the world's output by 2025. |
| Writer's opinions | Australians will be lonely if they don't learn to deal with 3.5 billion Asians. Australian (78) , in part, is responsible for their ignorance about Asia. It's right for the paper to (79) on Australian misunderstanding of Asia. It's high time that Asia languages were (80) to Australian children. |

Since the beginning of time never has there been another with my mind, my heart, my eyes, my ears, my hands, my mouth. None that came before, none that live today, and none that come tomorrow can walk and talk and move and think exactly like me. I’m a unique creature.
Vain attempts to imitate others no longer will I make. Instead will I place my uniqueness on display in the market place. I will begin now to highlight my differences; hide my similarities.
I am rare, and therefore I am valuable. I am the end product of thousands of years of evolution; therefore, I am better equipped in both mind and body than all the emperors and wise men before me.
But my skills, my mind, my heart, and my body will weaken, rot, and die for fear that I put them to good use. I have unlimited potential. Only a tiny part of my brain do I employ; only a small amount of my muscle do I apply.
So never again will I be satisfied with yesterday's accomplishments nor will I lose myself, anymore, in self-praise for deeds which in reality are too small to even acknowledge. I can accomplish far more than I have, and I will. I am not on this earth by chance. I am here for a purpose and that purpose is to grow into a mountain, not to shrink to a grain of sand. Henceforth(从今往后) will I apply all my efforts to become the highest mountain of all and I will strain my potential until it cries for mercy.
I will increase my knowledge of mankind, myself, and the goods I sell. I will practice, and improve, and polish the words I speak to multiply my sales, for this is the foundation on which I will build my career. Also will I seek constantly to improve my manners and graces, for they are the sugar to which all are attracted.
I have been given eyes to see and a mind to think and now I know a great secret of life that all my problems, discouragements, and heartaches are, in truth, great opportunities in disguise. I am nature’s greatest miracle. And nature knows not defeat. Eventually, she achieves victory and so will I, and with each victory the next struggle becomes less difficult.

Usually I love to visit my grandpa, but that Saturday I am really afraid. Why? Well, he was in the hospital for an operation. The surgery had done, but I was worried to see him old sick. I walked very slow down the hallway to his room, counted the room numbers. I passed Rooms 120, 121. Uh——oh, Room 122. I could hardly drag my foot through that door. I took a deep breath, telling himself not to be worried. To my great surprise, there sat my grandpa, though a little tired, the same like ever. He patted the bed and said, “Sit down,” I held his hand, that was comforting to me. “What’s the baseball score?” he smiled at me.
That’s my grandpa. Nothing can get him for long, and I am proud for him.

Love, Amy
At radio station WJLT in Fort Wayne, Indiana, letters poured in for the Christmas Wish Content. When Amy’s letter arrived at the radio station, Manager Lee Tobin read it carefully. Dear Miss Manners,
Friends of mine lost their home in a house fire. It was terrible. Another friend set up a “go fund me” type page for friends and to donate and help the couple. Many friends, including me, helped with money, meals, lamprey and their dog while they were getting back on their feet.
Last week, they sent thank-you notes. My roommate received one addressed to her and I did not. The notes were not in modularized; It was a printed one-size-fits-all message. My roommate realized I didn't receive a thank you note, so she sent a private message to the couple just letting them know I had been left out. I didn't know she had done this until later.
The next day, I got a text message apologizing and saying that I had been left out because their friend who addressed the notes must have missed me! (Miss Manners, they didn't even address the notes themselves!)It was accompanied by a picture of the thank-you note, which was texted to me with the message, “Here is a thank you just for you.”
I was a little annoyed. I helped them in their need and didn't get a second thought. I have not responded to her text message. Is it fair of me to consider this friendship over? Should I tell her that I am upset, or should I accept that this rude thank you was better than nothing?

In 1998 I had an experience that had a deep and lasting effect on me. Eric and I were eating lunch at a local soup and salad place, 41 I noticed a woman cleaning the tables nearby. She looked very sad and 42 , as if she’d just been severely 43 by her boss or had gotten some bad news.
Eric and I didn’t have a lot of money at the time― 44 eating this cheap meal was a stretch(滥用)of our budget(预算)―but as we were 45 up to leave, I walked up to this woman, 46 her a $5 bill and said, “I know the work you do is probably not 47 , but I want you to know that we think you’re doing a great job.”
The woman’s facial 48 changed quickly, from sadness to real 49 . She looked me straight in the eye and said, “Thank you very much.” She did her best to 50 back tears but with only partial success. I don’t 51 what else she said to me, but I’ll always remember the look on her face. At that moment we were really connected―human being to human being. I 52 whether it was the $5 that mattered to her―in fact it was the 53 that someone treated her as a real person. Eric and I were both deeply moved by the 54 .
Doing that small service 55 this woman made me forget my own worries. At least temporarily I entered a higher 56 of consciousness, shooting right up to the state of joy. I didn’t 57 that state for long, but I had a 58 experience that made me a different person.
That 59 taught me that even when I’m not in a great place myself, I still have the capacity to have a 60 effect on someone else. I don’t have to do anything unusual―30 seconds to offer a kind word to a stranger is all it takes.

As a lover of languages and cultures, I am shocked to hear that some people refuse to watch foreign movies just because they are subtitled(配字幕).The actor' s voice is of vital importance and the emotions that he or she conveys cannot be conveyed by a person reading a voice-over(画外音).
Actors invest a lot of time and energy in preparing for and performing their roles. They try to use various techniques to fully express their emotions. Obviously, an actor' s voice is one of the most effective methods to impress the audience. Their unique voices help them to shape the characters they play and bring them to life. When it all comes together, the audience can become lost in the action and the characters become real to them.
I have never liked dubbed(配音的)movies. I remember watching a few dubbed movies when I was a child. The voices didn't match the movements of the actors' mouths, the dubbed voices were exaggerated, and I knew that those people in the movies weren't really speaking English. By the time I was twelve, I was watching subtitled movies and never thought twice about it.
Watching subtitled movies from all over the world is highly beneficial. I immediately recognize people speaking Korean, Chinese, Spanish, and Italian when I walk down the street. When I was studying Japanese, watching subtitled movies helped me learn the language and made me a better speaker. I had never heard spoken Swedish until I saw a Swedish movie and I was amazed at some of the similarities between Swedish and English.
I laugh when I read movie reviews on Amazon. com where people give movies bad reviews because the DVD only had a subtitled option and no dubbed option. They complain about having to read the movie, as if reading was some difficult task. Not only am I into a movie, reading the subtitle also becomes a pleasure.
24. What does the author aim to explain in Paragraph 2?
A. How actors impress the audience. B. How actors prepare for their roles.
C. The importance of actors' voices. D. The difficulties of playing characters.
25. When watching dubbed movies as a child, the author felt _____.
A. excited B. surprised C. relaxed D. dissatisfied
26. According to Paragraph 4, watching subtitled movies allows the author to_____.
A. recognize many famous people B. make friends with some foreigners
C. know more about foreign languages D. become good at speaking Swedish
27. The reviewers mentioned in the last paragraph_____.
A. like to watch dubbed movies B. seldom watch movies at home
C. have no interest in reading books D. need both subtitled and dubbed movies
