How to Avoid an Internet Addiction

While it may seem like everyone surfs the web these days, there is fine line between casually checking your social media pages and having a full blown internet addiction. If you fear that you may lose interest in other aspects of your life because you prefer to be on the internet, you may be on your way to an internet addiction.    36

Admit you are at risk of an addiction.

More and more people in the world are becoming addicted to the internet. You are not the only one with this problem and it is becoming more and more common and more and more well- known.    37

Set aside limited time for computer use.

Make sure not to turn it on too many times a week. If you have a laptop, make sure to put it somewhere that you can remember but not somewhere that you see every day. Try keeping the lid closed when you are not using it.    38    If you have a desktop PC, try not to go near it or put something over it like a sheet.

Call people instead of sending instant messages or texts.

If you are free on weekends, call friends and ask them to go outside. This will distract you from the computer.    39

Use an alarm clock or timer.

Before using your computer, decide on a time limit such as 30 minutes. Set the clock or timer and make sure that you get off the computer when the time is up. Alternatively create a shutdown timer shortcut on your desktop.     40

A. Make a small list of what you want to do within that time.

B. When the computer is not looking at you, you are less likely to use it.

C. This can be programmed to shut down your computer after the set time.

D. Luckily, there are ways to avoid living your life in front of the computer.

E. This will stop you from using the Internet so often or going on to another page.

F. If you have a problem on weekdays, phone your friends or ask for help in person.

G. Do not be embarrassed; find others with the same problem and help each other beat it.

Some 30,000 years ago, artists who lived in caves in Europe painted pictures of the animals around them: panthers, hyenas, rhinos, cave lions, mammoths and other creatures which have been extinct for a long time. The paintings were highly realistic. Some even showed movement.

The artwork, more than a thousand drawings, is considered the oldest group of human cave drawings which have ever been discovered. They were preserved because the cave was sealed-- closed off--for more or less 23,000 years.

Fast forward to December 18, 1994, a group of French cave scientists were exploring caves in southern France. Jean-Marie Chauvet, who led the group then, describes the process of discovering the cave paintings. “At that time I was in the front, Eliette just walked behind me, Christian behind. Eliette said she saw two marks made with red ochre and she said, ‘They came here.’ And at this very moment everything began. The drawings and everything linked to the parietal art (壁画). That is where it started.”

Cave art expert Jean Clottes reviewed the paintings. “I was amazed at the number of paintings there were and paintings of their quality and particularly in front of the panel of the horses.”

Scientific analysis confirmed the prehistoric date of the artwork. Studies showed the drawings were created tens of thousands of years ago, before human history was written. The United Nations’ cultural agency UNESCO lists the cave as a World Heritage Site. They say that the drawings form a remarkable expression of early human artistic creation of grand excellence and variety.

The Chauvet Cave has been named after the explorer who first entered it. However, its environment and drawings are too fragile to be visited by human beings. So the cave is closed, and only people there for scientific purposes can go inside and see the artwork.

However, French authorities asked experts to create an exact copy of the cave, called Pont d’Arc Cavern. The copy, which we also call replica, cost more than 59 million dollars to build. It opened at the end of April in France.

Pascal Terrasse is the president of the cavern. He says everyone will be able to experience the thrill of looking at drawings made by the first humans in Europe. He says the place is magic because it is done so well. Authorities say they think as many as 400.000 people will be allowed to visit Pont d’Arc Cavern every year.

Never go into a supermarket hungry! This is a good piece of advice. If you go shopping for food before lunchtime, you’ll probably buy more than you plan to. Unfortunately, however, just this advice isn’t enough for consumers these days. Modern shoppers need an education in how and how not to buy things at the store. First, you check the weekly newspaper ads. Find out the items that are on sale and decide if you really need these things. In other words, don’t buy anything just because it’s cheaper than usual! “New and Improved!” or “All Natural” on the front of a package influence you. Instead, read the list of contents on the back. Third, compare prices, that is, you should examine the prices of both different brands and different sizes of the same brand.

Another suggestion for consumers is to buy ordinary items instead of famous brands. Ordinary items in supermarkets come in plain packages. These products are cheaper because producers don’t spend much money on packing or advertising. The quality, however, is usually as good as the quality of well-known name brands. In the same way, in buying clothes, you can often find high quality and low prices in brands that are not famous. Shopping in discount clothing stores can help you save a lot of money. Although these stores aren’t very attractive, and they usually do not have individual dressing rooms, not only are the prices low, but you can often find the same famous brands that you find in high-priced department stores.

Wise consumers read magazine ads and watch TV commercials, but they do this with one advantage: knowledge of the psychology behind the ads. In other words, well informed consumers watch for information and check for misinformation. They ask themselves questions: Is the advertiser hiding something in small print at the bottom of the page? Is there any real information in the commercial(商业广告), or is the advertiser simply showing an attractive image? With the answers to these questions, consumers can make a wise choice.

25All the following statements are true about the phrase “ordinary items” in Paragraph 2 except ______.

A. ordinary products are usually cheaper than famous brands.

B. producers spend less money on packaging of ordinary items .

C. the quality of ordinary items is usually as good as that of famous brands.

D. ordinary items never say “New and Improved” or “All Natural”.

26What does the writer think about ads?

A. They are believable.    B. They are attractive.

C. They are helpful.   D. They are harmful.

27One of the author’s suggestions to consumers is ______.

A. to buy any ordinary items instead of famous brands .

B. to make use of advertisements carefully for shopping.

C. to buy high quality items such as famous brands after lunch .

D. not to buy items with words like “New and Improved” or “All Natural”.

28The author implies that ______.

A. advertisements sometimes don’t tell the truth to the consumers.

B. discount clothing stores are only good places to go to for shopping.

C. going into the supermarket hungry, you may buy less than you plan to.

D. the quality of ordinary items is usually high and the prices are relatively low.

As is known to all that we students of today have to fix our attention on our lessons, so we know few of society. A holiday is the best time and the best chance to make up for that. Take a part-time job is a good form of social practice. That we have learned in books and in class can’t have the same important effect us as what we have learned through personal practice. In social practice, we can surely make a progress in both knowledge or practical ability. Beside, when we take a part-time job, we may got paid more or less to help our family. Thus, I will say we senior school students should take part-time jobs in their holidays, if possible.

Soon enough, we will lose some of the most amazing sites on Earth!

The Great Barrier Reef---Rising air temperatures will cause sea temperatures to rise as well. All life supported by the oceans will be affected with this shock to their ecosystem. Coral are some of the most vulnerable marine animals and we are already watching whole reefs disappear. The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is no exception and will continue to shrink as the temperatures rise! These reefs are some of the best in the world for diving, but they will soon disappear!

Venice---Sprawing across(横跨)hundreds of small islands in Northeast Italy, Venice is at extreme risk of sinking into the Adriatic Sea. Rising sea levels are in fact a serious threat to many coastal cities located at sea level. Lucky for us, however, Venice is developing a series of sea walls to protect the city in times of high tide.

Glacier(冰川)National Park---Glacier National Park was once covered by over 150 glaciers, but by 2005 it only had about 27! Located in Montana, Canada, this park is over a million acres and has a huge plant and wildlife population. As temperatures rise, the glaciers and ice melt, which will upset the ecosystems sustaining over a thousand plant species and hundreds of animals.

The Amazon---The cause behind the disappearance of these fantastic places ultimately comes down to humans. Our expansion usually requires cutting down forests for land, fuel and materials, but rarely considers the consequences. These forests are sources of food and medicine for just about everyone on the planet!

What will happen if we lose these valuable places and beautiful destinations?!

B. Many places are in the risk of sinking below the sea level

A. It covers a large area in Montana

B. It is covered by over 150 glaciers

C. Plant species and animals in it have died out

D. It doesn’t support any living thing for its cold

4. Which site’s shrinking reason differs from the other sites?

A. The Great Barrier Reef    B. Venice

C. Glacier National Park    D. The Amazon

When we worked in the same office, we ________ often have coffee together.

   A. would             B. might             C. could               D. should

It was about midday. I’d left work early in the morning to cash a check. I walked along to the bank and found there were only about ten or eleven customers there, a pretty unusual number for those central city banks.

I waited until it was my turn, walked up to the desk and started talking to the bank clerk. He had a really strange expression on his face just sort of a blank (茫然的) stare. I thought he was looking at me until I realize he was staring over my shoulder.

I began to turn round to see what he was looking at and at the same moment, the outside bank guard, the one with the machine gun, came flying through the door and lay face down on the floor. Following him through the door were three absolutely frightening men wearing those horrible stocking masks. They were carrying guns; at least the one in front was carrying a pistol.

Whether or not they said anything I can't remember to this day, or whether people just automatically put their hands up I don't know. I put my hands up but I just didn't know what to do.

For a few moments there was just total silence, suddenly broken by the telephone ringing. I remember wondering who was on the other end of the line. Nobody answered the telephone, so it just kept on ringing and ringing, in this otherwise deathly quiet.

Then two of the masked men went to the counter, jumped over it and got the cashiers and bank clerks to start filling their bags with cash. While the two were getting the money, the one at the door covering us with the gun obviously got a bit of an anxiety attack and started swearing at them, telling them to hurry up and get a move on.

They jumped back over the counter. One of them lost his balance when he landed on the floor and fell over. The other two swore at him again. Then they left through the door, warning us, "Don't move. Stay like that with your hands up for ten minutes." Then they just disappeared and there was total silence.

1What does the writer mean by saying “a pretty unusual number for t hose central banks” in the first paragraph?

AMore customers than usual were staying in the bank.

BLess bank clerks than expected were working in the bank.

CThere were usually more than a dozen customers in the bank.

DMore banks should be open to serve customers in the city center.

2The bank clerk wore a blank expression on his face probably because

Ahe was feeling upset at that moment

Bhe felt puzzled and sensed something terrible

Che was required to keep silent at work

Dhe was threatened with a gun by robbers

3Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

AThe customers didn’t wait in line but jumped the queue because of the confusion.

BAll the people in the bank except the writer put their hands up automatically.

CNobody answered the telephone because all the clerks were busy with work.

DThe bank workers were forced to fill the robbers’ bags with cash.

4What’s the best title of this passage?

AA Street Gang                                      BA Strange Bank

CA Bank Robbery                         DA Horrible Adventure
