, the growing lack of kindness is a social phenomenon that has caused great concern of society

AAs a consequence   BOn the whole          COn the contrary      DIn the meanwhile

The earth is dying before us yet we sit and watch. If the TV or the game system breaks, we run off to the stores to get it fixed immediately no matter what the cost. Why aren’t we willing to fix our earth? Are our televisions and game systems more important to us than where we live? Where shall we continue to live, until the end of time?

The earth is our home and cannot be replaced. We must take care of it. We have come up with so much technology that limits us instead of helping us. Take that game system we run to repair. What does it do? It occupies kids’ time! The earth has already given kids plenty of entertainment in the forms of fields and hills, forests and plains, water and land. However, instead of using what the earth has given us, and helping kids by giving them exercise as they run around, we decide to ruin kids’ minds with game systems that glue them to the screen for hours, and make them ignore their homework and chores. We have polluted this earth by making these things that do not even help us in any way!

We have already messed up this world. We’ve ruined the air, water, and animals that it has so willingly provided for us. We need to stop this destruction of life and bring back the world we had before. It will not be easy, but everybody can help! What about something as simple as turning the lights off when you leave a room? Recycling what can be recycled? Picking up litter? Donating money to an environmental organization? None of these things are very hard. We can’t just always say, “Oh, the earth is a mess. Ah, well, those big companies that are polluting so much can stop and fix it.” Instead, we need to help out. It’s not only those big companies; it’s everyday things that we do too that are ruining the earth. So stop and think about what you can do to make a difference to our world!

The Wife-carrying World Championship has been celebrated in a small town in central Finland since 1992. In 1992, the people of the town decided to restart some long-forgotten traditions. Back in the late 1800s, there was a robber called Rosvo-Ronkainen in that area. He was said to only accept men as members of his gang who proved their worth in challenges. At that time, it was also a common practice to steal women from neighboring villages.

This event is becoming increasingly popular. A large number of competitors, people, and journalists from Finland to Canada attend the Wife-carrying World Championship every year.

The event is famous for its warm and humorous atmosphere. The Wife-carrying World Championship is held on a 253.3 meters long official track. The track has two dry obstacles (障碍物)and a water obstacle, about a meter deep.

There are a few basic rules and the winner is the couple who complete the course in the shortest time. The wife to be carried may be your own, or your neighbors. The minimum weight of the wife to be carried is 49 kg. If she is less than 49kg, the wife will be given a heavy bag to carry. Each time a competitor drops his wife, that couple will be fined 15 seconds.

Alongside with the Wife-carrying World Championship, there is also a team competition. The distance is the same but three men in the team carry the wife in turns. At the exchange point the carrier has to drink official wife-carrying drink. Then he may continue the race. A special prize is awarded to the team with the best costumes.

While the Wife-carrying World Championship is being held, there are bands playing music, a wife-carrying dance and other forms of entertainment.

Life is different in Anchorage, Alaska, at the beginning of March. Every year at this time, the downtown streets become crowded with people. But these are not just regular pedestrians. In addition to the people walking through the streets, there are hundreds of dogs. It is time for the Iditarod—the famous dogsled race of Alaska.

The name of the race comes from the name of an Alaska gold rush town, Iditarod. It means “distant” or “distant place.” It comes from one of the languages of native Alaskans.

More than sixty sled teams begin the race in Anchorage. When the teams reach the outskirts of town, they get a taste of Alaska’s wilderness. For about two weeks, they will fight the unbearable cold, wind, snow, and ice to finish the race. The temperature on the trail is often well below zero degrees.

The Iditarod trail stretches for about a thousand miles. It has many rendezvous points. At these meeting places, race teams “check in” to let officials know how they are doing. Some teams get into trouble along the way. Officials will stop them on the trail and give them the help they need. For example, officials might stop a team’s progress to give first aid or to collect an injured or tired dog. These dogs are cared for and reunited with their owners after the race.

The Iditarod trail is an important part of Alaska’s history. A part of the trail was used by some heroic dogs and humans in 1925. In Nome, Alaska, many people were catching the deadly disease diphtheria. The whole town was in quarantine, or isolation, in order to stop this disease. The only way to get medicine to Nome was by dogsled. About twenty “mushers,” or dogsled drivers, offered to help. They wanted to save the people of Nome from this terrible trouble.

Today the Iditarod race honors this heroic journey and all of the journeys on the famous trail. As the race organizers say, the Iditarod is “the last great race on Earth.”

I joined in a program call the “Happy School” in the holidays. It was given to some volunteers from the universities in our city. There were many courses, including photography, painting, basketball training for us to choose from. These courses were intended to help us left-behind middle school student in the countryside, our parents are working in other cities, make use of our holidays. The volunteers took good care of us, showed them how to do our homework and make sure of our safety. I learned a lot from the interested program. I will attend such programs again the next summer if there is some.

He has the coolest hair, and he is so funny. Every time you see him, you feel shy and embarrassed.

You don’t even know her, but you feel nervous whenever you see her and when she looks at you, you just smile like an idiot.

If a girl or a boy is making you feel this way, it sounds like you have a crush(爱恋).

Nothing your first crush is an exciting time. Sometimes , feelings for a crush can be confusing because they’re new to you. If you feel awkward around your crush, you’re not alone. That’s how most people feel. Some people are even speechless when they see their crush. It can be hard to control how you feel, but the rules of good behavior still apply. If your crush doesn’t want to talk with you or it seems like you’re making the person uncomfortable, it’s time to back off. Likewise, never let anyone behave in a way that makes you feel funny or uncomfortable.

When you develop special feelings toward someone, you might want to talk with friends about it, but sometimes kids tease(取笑) other kids about crushes. Getting teased is never fun, so if you need someone to talk with about a crush, a parent can be a good choice. They were kids once, too, and they know what it’s like. Maybe they’ll tell you about their own first crush!

When you have a crush on someone and you find out that he or she likes you, too, it’s a wonderful feeling. But sometimes it doesn’t work out that way. You might feel sad, disappointed, and rejected . If you feel heartbreak, those feelings can last for a while, but they will fade. And, try to be kind if you’re on the other end of a crushwhen someone likes you. It’s a compliment when someone thinks you’re special. If you don’t feel the same way, try to tell him or her in a nice way.

Crushers are new and exciting, so enjoy them while they last. Someday, you’ll be telling your own kids about your first crush!

25. When you see your crush, you may feel          .

It’s interesting that technology often works as a servant for us, yet frequently we become a servant to it. Email is a useful tool but many feel controlled by this new tool. The average business person is getting about 80 emails per day and many feel that about 80% of the messages in their box are of little or no value.

So, I have four suggestions to help you to become better at “Erasing Email”

1.get off the lists. The best way to deal with a problem is to never have it. If you are receiving a lot of unwanted emails, ask to be removed from the various lists. This would include your inclusion in unwanted lists.

2. “unlisted address”. Just as you keep an unlisted telephone number that you share only with those whom you want to have direct access to , you might want to get a separate email address only for the important communications you wish to receive.

3.check it once or twice per day. Many I speak with are becoming chained to their email server, monitoring incoming email continuously. Maybe this is because email creates its own sense of urgency, but most of the communications are not all that urgent. I respond to them a couple of times per day.

4. deal with it. As you open each email, do one of the following:

a. if it requires a quick response, respond to it and delete it.

b. if it requires a response but is not the best use of your time, try to find someone else to do it.

c. if it is going to take any serious amount of time to respond, schedule it for action in your day planner and then download the message, save it, or print it out for future action.

I personally receive about 250 emails per day and by practising the suggestions above, I can handle that volume in about an hour, taking advantage of this fantastic tool but not being controlled by it to make sure I’m doing more important tasks in my day.

36. If you get unwanted emails, the best you can do is to_______.

A.make a list of them    B.put them into unwanted lists

C. send them to a special address   D. ask to be deleted from different lists

37. For the important communications, the writer suggests that you ______.

A. have a direct access for them  B. have several email servers for them

C. get a separate email address for them  D. get an unlisted phone number for them

38. To avoid being chained by the incoming emails, what you can do is to______.

A. respond urgent ones only  B. reply to all of them at the same time

C.handle them a couple of times daily  D. keep replying to emails all day long

39. To deal with an email you get, you can do the following except_______.

A. responding right away if it’s urgent

B. downloading every email before you reply

C. scheduling it for later reply if it takes much time

D. asking someone else to reply to it if it’s not at your convenience

As an old English saying goes, “honesty is the best policy”. It is more than an old cliché(陈词滥调) but __61__ good way to live your life.

First, honesty is the __62___ (easy) choice that we can make. When people get caught in lies, it always costs them something. Many relationships can be destroyed by lies.

Second, honesty gives us much __63___ (free). Many people believe that being honest limits them in life, but that is not true. Sooner or later those dishonest people ___64__(pay) a price for their acts; on the contrary, when we are honest, we are __65___(true) free.

If there are two people __66___(stand) before you, a person with a record of being honest and a person ___67__ is known to be dishonest, who would you be more likely __68___(believe)? I’m sure most people would side with the honest person. __69___ we live in the truth or we live in lies. Truth sets us free and lies leave us in nothing but more troubles. Honesty is a choice that we make each day. The choice is __70___ (you). What will you choose?
