I was ten when I first sat with my grandmother behind the cashier(收银台)in her general store. 16_I quickly learned the importance of treating customers politely and saying “thank you.”
At first I was paid in candy. 17 I worked every day after school, and during the summer and on weekends and holidays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. My father helped me set up a bank account. 18
By the time I was 12, my grandmother thought I had done such a good job that she promoted me to selling cosmetics(化妆品)I developed the ability to look customers directly in the eye. Even though I was just a kid, women would ask me such things as “What color do you think I should wear?” I took a real interest in their questions and was able to translate what they wanted into makeup(化妆)ideas. 19
The job taught me a valuable lesson: to be a successful salesperson, you didn’t need to be a rocket scientist—you needed to be a great listener. 20 Expect they are no longer women purchasing cosmetics from me; instead, they are kids who tell me which toys they would like to see designed and developed.
A. Before long, she let me sit there by myself.
B. Soon I found myself looking more beautiful than ever before.
C.Later I received 50 cents an hour.
D.I ended my selling a record amount of cosmetics.
E. My grandma’s trust taught me how to handle responsibility。
F. Watching my money grow was more rewarding than anything I could have bought.
G. Today I still carry that lesson with me: I listen to customers.

Everyone has dreams and they obey the rules that if you can dream it, you can achieve it! Here are four goals for people to reach a perfect life in their future.
The first goal common to all of us is health and energy. We all want to be healthy and fit, to have high levels of energy and to live free of pains and illnesses. Today, with the incredible advances in medical science, the quality of our health and fitness, and our lifespan, is largely determined by design, not by chance. People with excellent health habits are far healthier, have more energy, and live longer and better than people who have poor health habits. Remember that health is not everything, but without health everything is nothing!
The second goal that we all have in common is to enjoy excellent relationships--- intimate, personal or social--- with the people we like and respect, and who like and respect us in turn. Fully 85% of your happiness will be determined by the quality of your relationships at each stage, and in each area, of your life. How well you get along with people, and how much they like, love and respect you, have more impact on the quality of your life than perhaps any other factor.
The third common goal is to do work that we enjoy, to do it well, and to be well paid for it. You want to be able to get and keep the job you want, to get paid more and elevated faster. You want to earn the very most that is possible for you at each stage of your career, whatever you do.
The fourth goal we all have in common is to achieve financial independence. You want to reach the point in life where you have enough money so that you never have to worry about money again. You want to completely be free of financial worries. You want to be able to order dinner in a restaurant without referring to the price listings to determine what you want to eat.

Anthropology sophomore Van Truong recently combined art and biology to excel at her final
exam in December. While most of her college mates used lists and flashcards to memorize stuff, Van used a whiteboard to write out all her notes in the form of `Starry Night', Van Gogh's famous
Masterpiece.
"I knew I had to study for this exam, and I knew I'd be writing on this whiteboard for hours," she said. "So I thought,`Wouldn't it be funny if I did it in a form where people didn't know how to feel about it? "'
So when she got to Smathers Library on the University of Florida's Gainesville campus, she started to write down all her notes with the words forming a replica(复制品)of Van Gogh's iconic painting. Three hours later, the masterpiece was complete.
Truong said that the special technique helped her keep awake during the tiring study session, and actually learn more than she normally would have. "I knew if I had to read through a packet of notes, I'd fall asleep," she admitted. "I don't know if I would have lasted three hours just going through notes. I can explain chronologically the order of where I placed each word on that Starry Night replica better than a sequence of events in evolutionary history."
And the reason she chose `Starry Night' was because of its composition. She realized that a painting of a person might look disjointed if made out of words. But she could easily make the sentences look like Van Gogh's beautiful, wavy brush strokes.
The young anthropology student is no stranger to original art. Last year, she and a friend recreated Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa using seaweed(海带)that had washed up on shore near her home.

B. words would look separate and disconnected in a portrait
C. sentences fitted in with the strokes of `Starry Night' better.
D. she could produce more beautiful sentences in `Starry Night'
69. What's the best title of this passage?

Back in 2003 an 86-year-old man drove his Buick through a crowded farmers’ market. Nine people were killed. More than fifty-four people were hurt, fourteen with serious injuries. When he finally stopped, the 86-year-old man got out his car and screamed at people to get out of the way. No alcohol or drugs were found in his system. Apparently, he was just old and confused.
This is a frightening accident, and it is not a rare one. There are many examples of elderly drivers driving into swimming pools, houses, storefronts, or worse.
In our teenage years, we all heard “driving is not a right; it’s a privilege.” That is still true, and there comes an age when driving is no longer a privilege that can be allowed. After a certain age, eyesight and dementia(痴呆) are very serious concerns. Undoubtedly, these age-related problems affect some older adults’ driving ability. By the time a person is between eighty-five and ninety years old, his or her driving privilege should be examined.
Licensing laws vary greatly from state to state, and it’s time for a national law on the maximum age limit for driving. The motivation for this law is safety. Another option is to start with laws that ban anyone over the age of eighty-five from driving after sundown, because driving conditions are not as safe as daylight hours. Still another option that may allow elderly drivers to continue driving could be new technology like a voice warning system that cautions drivers on busy streets or at traffic lights. Finally, since there ar
e laws against driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, shouldn’t some prescription drugs also be included? The average age of 85-year-old is undoubtedly taking at least one prescription drug daily.
The thought of an 86-year-old driver with failing eyesight running down the road in a two-ton piece of metal is unsettling to us all.
Driving at an advanced age is not only challenging for the elderly drivers, but also it’s dangerous for the rest of us.
25. The first paragraph is written in order to show_________.
A. the harm of driving at an old age B. the importance of traffic safety
C. traffic accidents are on the rise D. many elderly drivers are careless
26. The author suggests that there should be new laws against driving __________.
A. over eighty-five B. between sunset and dawn
C. with the help of voice warning systems D. under the influence of prescription drugs
27. The underlined word “unsettling” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to “________”.
A. disappointing B. worrying C. touching D. interesting
28. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. How to keep old people safe on the road?
B. Are drivers well protected by licensing laws?
C. Should there be an age limit for elderly drivers?
D. Is driving a right or a privilege for an old person?

The New York Times recently published a report about scientists who are preparing astronauts for a trip to the Moon. The newspaper said the scientists want to make sure that their astronauts return home in good health. But there are many problems to solve before people are ready for long trips to the Moon.
Humans developed on a planet with a surface that is more than 70 percent water. Our bodies are also about 70 percent water. When there is no gravity, that water moves up toward the head, raising the pressure in the skull(头骨). Arms and legs grow weak at what is called zero gravity because they no longer need to push against the force of gravity.
Five years ago, astronauts who spent weeks in space reported a change in their eyesight. These astronauts were members of the crew on the International Space Station. Research showed a change in the shape of their eyes. Normally-round eyeballs had become flat during the time in space. The research also showed that the right eye was affected more than the left, and that men were more affected than women. Scientists could not find an explanation for the differences.
Bone loss was one of the problems first reported by astronauts returning to Earth after longer stays in space. So scientists designed exercise machines to use on the space station. Tests showed that the exercise equipment helped space travelers keep their bones almost as strong as when they left Earth.
There are other health issues for astronauts who spend a long time in space. They may have problems eating and sleeping. But the biggest health issue is exposure to radiation. On Earth, human beings are protected by the atmosphere and the planet’s magnetic field (磁场). In outer space, there is no such protection.

B. The pressure in the skull will increase.
C. The brain will grow weaker.
D. The thinking will be slower.
34. What is the biggest problem that astronauts have to face?
A. Sleeping. B. Eating. C. Listening. D. Radiation.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. A report about a trip to the Moon.
B. How to keep healthy as astronauts.
C. Some health problems astronauts face.
D. How to protect themselves as astronauts.
My spare time is full of interested activities. I read all kinds of books in the reading room whenever I am free. I learn much in the library than in class in this way. Meanwhile, I participated in many sports activities, of that my favorite is volleyball. I often play volleyball after the school. Sports and games keep me healthy and energetic enough to get across a variety of difficulties. Sometime I go in for social practice with my classmates outside school. Thus, I can gain much social experiences . Out-of-class activities are quite necessary for our students. Through these activities we can learn many things can not be learned in class.
Nothing could stop Dad. After he was put on disability for a bad back, he bought a small farm in the country, just enough to grow food for the family. He planted vegetables, fruit trees and even kept bees for honey.
And every week he cleaned Old Man McColgin’s chicken house in exchange for manure. The smell really burned the inside of your nose. When we complained about the terrible smell, Dad said the stronger the manure, the healthier the crops, and he was right. For example, just one of his cantaloupes filled the entire house with its sweet smell, and the taste was even sweeter.
As the vegetables started coming in, Dad threw himself into cooking. One day, armed with a basket of vegetables, he announced he was going to make stew. Dad pulled out a pressure cooker and filled it up with cabbages, eggplants, potatoes, corns, onions and carrots. For about half an hour, the pressure built and the vegetables cooked. Finally, Dad turned off the stove, the pot began to cool and the pressure relief valve sprayed out a cloud of steam. If we thought Dad's pile of chicken manure was bad, this was 10 times worse. When Dad took off the lid, the smell nearly knocked us out.
Dad carried the pot out and we opened doors and windows to air out the house. Just how bad was it? The neighbors came out of their houses to see if we had a gas leak!
Determined, Dad filled our plates with steaming stew and passed them around it didn't look that bad, and after the first wave had shut down my ability to smell, it didn't offend the nose so much, edible, and we drank
up every last drop of soup !

About a month ago, I was walking alone on the beach in the evening. I have already finished my homework, and I wanted to relax. Suddenly, I saw two children stand on the beach. They seem to have found something made of metal, which was big and reddish-brown. When I took a look at it, I knew immediate that it was an old bomb! I told them to move away the bomb. Fortunately, I had a mobile phone around with me, so I called the police and told them that had been found. About 15 minutes late, the police arrived. I was praised for it but then I went home. The next day, I heard that
the police had blown the bomb up. It had been on the sand for over 60 years!
The movies just wouldn’t be the same without the warm buttery taste of popcorn(爆米花). Amazingly, this delicious treat started its life as a corn kernel(玉米粒)---and not from just any corn. Popcorn is a type of sweet corn that was originally grown in Mexico and spread to China, India and elsewhere. It is the only kind of corn that will pop. Today, most of the world’s popcorn is grown in the United States.
Every popcorn kernel contains a tiny drop of water, surrounded by soft starch (淀粉). When the popcorn is heated, the water turns into steam. This puts pressure on the surrounding hard kernel, forcing it to explode. The soft starch increases about 40 times in size as the corn kernel turns itself inside out.
In the 1500s popcorn was an important food source for the Aztec Indians of central and southern Mexico. But it wasn’t only food. It was also used in ceremonies or on red dresses and in necklaces. By the time the Europeans arrived in America, popcorn had spread through most of the American Indians.
Some early American settlers ate popcorn with cream and sugar for breakfast. But it wasn’t until the late 1800s that popcorn became popular. The demand for popcorn increased and farmers began farming popcorn. The first mobile popping machine was invented in 1885, and popcorn was sold by street sellers much like hot dogs that are sold today.
During the Great Depression of the 1930s, the popcorn business still thrived as people could still afford it. Then in the 1950s television arrived and popcorn consumption decreased. People stayed home and stopped going to the theatre. But the link between movies and popcorn had already existed. Soon people began making popcorn at home on the stove and, later, microwave popcorn was introduced.
Today the movies have regained popularity and popcorn has once again become the favorite.

A. popcorn began to be farmed in the late 1800s
B. popcorn was only a kind of food in the 1500s
C. hot dogs used to be sold by street sellers
D. people stop eating popcorn while watching movies now
