To prevent the deserts coming near, China has planted billions of trees---to replace destroyed forests and as barriers against the sand. This isn’t a cure, though, say experts, as thirsty trees can make the problem worse by taking in groundwater.
“Planting trees is one way, but it isn’t that simple. It doesn’t solve the basic issue of water resources,” says Wu Bo, a professor. “We need to calculate how much water the trees will absorb, or else it could have a negative effect.”
Villagers in Zhengxin have taken on this challenge, with limited success. When the irrigation channels began to run dry, Lu Xianglin switched from wheat to cotton on his land. He also planted trees to protect his fields from sandstorms. He says he still gets good yields(产量) using flood irrigation and earns a good income for his family.
Other farmers haven’t stuck it out(坚持到底): about one in three have left Zhengxin in the past 10 years after their wheat crops died. Young people who can find jobs in the towns rarely return.
Last week, Mr Lu joined the other men in his village on a government-arranged trip to see the land that has been set aside for their relocation, nearly 40 miles to the south. The next day, he was back, shaking his head at the plan. The idea of uprooting his family troubles him, as does the idea of giving up the land that fed his forefathers. He prefers to stay and keep up the fight.
“With enough water, this problem can be solved,” Lu says. “We can plant trees and grass, and they will grow bigger. That will stop the desert.”
Experts say that farmers could switch to drip irrigation (滴灌)to lessen their water intake for growing crops. Elsewhere in the region, farmers have built brick greenhouses as part of a plan to grow vegetables using less water. Roadside signs urge farmers to “Save Water, Protect the Environment”.
28. The negative effect of planting trees in deserts is that __________.
A. it can make groundwater become less
B. it can prevent the sand moving freely
C. it can stop crops growing well
D. it can get the soil to become poor
29. Why did Mr. Lu NOT accept the idea of relocation?
A. Because the plan of relocation will cost him much money.
B. Because his family had trouble moving away.
C. Because he was reluctant to give up his land.
D. Because he would rather stay than fight against the deserts.
30. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The deserts drive more and more people to leave their homes for their lives.
B. People have no means to fight against the land becoming desert.
C. Water is the biggest barrier for people to stop the desert.
D. Planting trees cannot solve the problem of desertification of farmland.
31. What advice is given by experts to save water?
A. To plant more trees.
B. To build greenhouses.
C. To change crops.
D. To use drip irrigation.
Two of the saddest words in the English language are “if only”. I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment.
My father is famous in our family for saying, “Take the extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only” moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.
I don’t only avoid those “if only” moments when it comes to safety. It’s equally important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say “I love you” or “I forgive you.” When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn’t be here. But then I thought about the fact that he’s 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn’t give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.
I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only” about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality. And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I’m doing the right thing. I’m buying myself peace of mind and that’s the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.
32. Which of the following is an example of the “extra minute” rule?
A. Start the car the moment everyone is seated.
B. Leave the room for a minute with the iron working.
C. Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better.
D. Move an object out of the way before it trips someone.

D. finish her work before the deadline approached

Social change is more likely to occur in societies where there is a mixture of different kinds of people than in societies where people are similar in many ways. The simple reason for this is that there are more different ways of looking at things present in the first kind of society. There are more ideas, more disagreements in interest, and more groups and organizations with different beliefs. In addition, there is usually a greater worldly interest and greater tolerance in mixed societies. All these factors (因素) tend to promote social change by opening more areas of life to decision. In a society where people are quite similar in many ways, there are fewer situations for people to see the need or the opportunity for change because everything seems to be the same. And although conditions may not be satisfactory, they are at least customary and clear.
Within a society, social change is also likely to occur more frequently and more readily in the material aspects of the culture than in the non-material aspects, for example, in technology rather than in values; in what has been learned later in life rather than in what was learned early; in the simple elements (因素) rather than in the complex ones; in elements that are acceptable to the culture rather than in strange ones.
Besides, social change is easier if it is gradual. For example, it comes more readily in human relations on a continuous scale rather than one with a shape division. This is one reason why change has not come more quickly to Black Americans as compared to other American minorities, because of the sharp difference in appearance between them and their white fellows.
28. The underline part “greater tolerance” in Paragraph 1 probably refers to “________”.
A. quicker adaptation to changing condition
B. greater willingness to accept social change
C. greater readiness to agree to different conditions
D. more respect for different beliefs and behavior
29. Why is social change less likely to occur in a society where people are similar in many
ways?
A. They are so conservative that they tend to slow down social change.
B. They are so used to their conditions that they seldom want to change.
C. They can easily get what they want in the material aspect of society.
D. They have similar needs that can be satisfied without much difficulty.
30. Which of the following factors probably tends to promote social change fast?
A. Sharp divisions in relations B. Traditional values
C. Different points of view D. Similar appearances.
31. What is this passage mainly discussing?
A. Two different kinds of society B. Certain factors affecting social change.
C. The importance of social change D. Consequences of social change

The stress of returning to work on a Monday morning can cause a dangerous increase in blood pressure, according to a study.
The Tokyo Women’s Medical University study shows blood pressure readings(读数、指数) are higher than at any other time of the week.
It may explain why deaths from heart attacks and stroke tend to 41 on a Monday morning. There are 20% more heart attacks on Mondays than on any other day.
Heart disease is Britain’s biggest killer. Around 270,000 people suffer a heart attack every year and nearly one in three die before they even reach hospital.
High blood pressure, or hypertension, 42 one in five people in the UK and is a major risk 43 for heart disease. The higher it climbs, the greater the force exerted(施加) by blood on the walls of the arteries(动脉)when the heart beats.
To see how it changed over the course of a week, researchers from Tokyo Women’s Medical University in Japan, fitted 175 men and women with a device that would measure their blood pressure round-the-clock. A week later, the volunteers returned the devices so that researchers could 44 how blood pressure had changed.
The results, published in the American Journal of Hypertension, showed a surge(振荡) in readings in those getting ready to go back to work on a Monday morning. Volunteers who stayed asleep did not experience an increase, which 45 work-related stress is most likely to 46 .
“Most people are free of the mental and physical 47 of work on Sundays and experience a more stressful change from weekend 48 activities to work activities on Mondays, ”said Dr. Murakami, who led the research.. “But anyway, there was a 49 peak on Mondays.”
Some of us feel puzzled about the 61 (participate) of a debate. Here is some information which will help you get a general idea of it.
Participating in a debate is a useful practice of those who aim to become public speakers. In a formal debate a statement called a “motion” is 62 (propose). It is defended by the proposers and challenged by their opponents. To become a 63 (lead) debater it is necessary to acquire several techniques and skills. 64 experienced debater seeks to persuade others by presenting relevant arguments 65 (intention), not by the violence of his language. He shows respect for standpoints which 66 (different) from his own and does not allow personal hostility to enter into 67 should be a conflict of ideas. He anticipates the points put forward by his opponent and deals with them methodically. He attempts to present a 68 (consist) case, 69 rather, a piece of reasoning free from self-contradiction. He realizes that the 70 (accept) conclusions must be supported by adequate evidence. He knows how to sum up the various points that arise in the course of the debate.
