As a good mother to three children, I have tried never to let my passion stand in the way of being a good parent.
I no longer consider myself the center of the universe. I show up. I listen. I try to laugh. I am a good friend to my husband. I have tried to make marriage vows (誓言)mean what they say. I am a good friend to my friends, and they to me. Without them, there would be nothing to say to you today.
So here’s what I want to tell you today: Get a life. A real life, not a desire of the next promotion, the bigger paycheck, the larger house.
Get a life in which you are not alone. Find people you love, and who love you. And remember that love is not leisure; it is work. Pick up the phone. Send an e-mail. Write a letter. And realize that life is the best thing and that you have no business taking it for granted.
It’s so easy to waste our lives, our days, our hours and our minutes. It’s so easy to exist instead of to live. I learned to live many years ago. Something really, really bad happened to me, something that changed my life in ways that, if I had my choice, it would never have been changed at all. And what I learned from it is what, today, seems to be the hardest lesson of all.
I learned to love the journey, not the destination. I learned to look at all the good in the world and try to give some of it back because I believed in it, completely and totally. And I tried to do that, in part, by telling others what I had learned.
By telling them this: Read in the backyard with the sun on your face. Learn to be happy. If you do, you will live it with joy and passion as it ought to be lived.

It is important to have good study habits. 36 Here are a few tips to help you in your studies.
37 It's OK to spend a little extra time studying right before a big test, but you don't want to try to learn everything that night. Give yourself plenty of time to get things done. Figure out when you study best and then study at that time every day, which will make you energetic.
Study the most difficult subjects first. Doing this allows you to devote all of that fresh power to the materials that give you the most trouble. 38
Don't study in a room that is too hot or too cold, and make sure there is adequate lighting. Be aware of what things take your attention away the most and avoid them at all costs during study time. Don't do homework in front of the TV. Don't try to study if you are tired, depressed, angry, or feeling rushed. 39
Friends can be a great resource. You can compare notes and ask each other questions at the end of a period of study. Friends can also keep you motivated to study.
It has been proved that short bursts of concentration repeated frequently are more effective than one long period of concentration. Studying for hours on end is boring. 40
While studying, try to relate the information to things you already know or to your own experiences. Making that connection can make new information more interesting and memorable.
A. So you can save up more time.
B. It is worthwhile spending more time on the harder subjects.
C. It is better to study when your brain is not affected by other emotional issues.
D. Make some changes in your study habits.
E. Schedule some daily study time.
F. And it stresses out your body and mind.
G. With the proper study skills, you can significantly improve your grades.

Women in Nazi Germany were to have a very special job. Hitler was very clear about this. This job was that they should be good mothers bringing up children at home while their husbands worked. Except for some special fields, Hitler saw no reason why a woman should work. Within months of Hitler coming to power, many female doctors, teachers and lawyers were sacked. By the start of the Second World War, very few German women were in fulltime work. From their earliest years, girls were taught that all good German women married at a young age to a proper German and that the wife’s job was to keep a good home for her working husband and to have children.
One of the earliest laws passed by Hitler once he came to power in 1933, was the Law for the Encouragement of Marriage. This law stated that all newly married couples would get a government loan (贷款) of 1000 marks. This loan was not to be simply paid back. The birth of one child meant that 25% of the loan did not have to be paid back. Two children meant that 50% of the loan didn’t need to be paid back. Four children meant that the entire loan was cleared.
What was more, as housewives and mothers, their lives were controlled. Women were not expected to wear make-up or trousers. Only flat shoes were expected to be worn. Women were discouraged from slimming as this was considered bad for child birth.

October 21 was a very dark day in Texas. Not only did Hurricane Hanna destroy homes, it caused the largest business damage in Texas’s history. The worst thing is Hanna’s destructive force nearly wiped out(摧毁) most power poles and power lines. According to Center Point Energy, Hurricane Hanna affected 2.15 million customers. Currently, more than 4,000 of them are still in the dark. Crews have worked 16-hour shifts(更换) to restore power to residents.

Unfortunately, my sister called me at that moment 46 we talked on the phone for an hour. Then when I saw her again, she was sitting in front of the computer, looking quite 47 . The screen saver (屏幕保护) had appeared and she didn’t know how to 48 it off. She had tried 49 every key and it didn’t work. I told her, “Just 50 the mouse a little.” What I meant was that she just needed to move the mouse around to 51 the computer up. Napoleon agreed to plans for a tunnel(隧道) under the English Channel in 1802. The British began digging one in 1880. Neither tunnel was completed. Europe has had to wait until the end of the 20th century for the Channel Tunnel. After nearly two centuries of dreaming, the island of Great Britain is connected to Continental Europe for the first time since the Ice Age, when the two land masses moved apart.
On May 6, 1994, Britain’s Queen Elizabeth and France’s President Mitterrand carried out the official opening. For certain reasons I 71 (stay) with relatives currently, and in their living room sits a piano which is my favourite musical instrument.
As 72 child I started learning to play the piano but soon decided to stop so that I could concentrate more 73 my studies. This is one of my biggest regrets. Every year I would say, “I’m going back to it soon” but I never managed to. Some years later, my teacher 74 had taught me to play the piano died. I was heartbroken.
75 (sit) sat their piano, I think of the times when I used to practice. One time my teacher hugged me after I played an entire sheet of music 76 (correct) in front of her colleagues. I was so 77 (embarrass) but her efforts to comfort me helped in easing the shame. These occurrences, good or bad, never decrease my desire 78 (play) the piano. I still want to make music.
This 79 (think) then leads me to think that life is like music. Sometimes the music 80
(produce) is perfect while other times we are out of tune. However, we all coutinue to create our own unique style of music.
The New York Times’ Room for Debate blog has a panel (专门小组) considering the pluses and minuses of summer homework. This has been the subject of debate in our house. Our 11th-grade daughter’s summer assignments were very challenging, to the point where I sometimes wondered if more of her time would have been better spent just riding a bicycle or swimming around a pool.
Here are some opinions from the panel:
Harris Cooper, psychologist, Duke University: “The long summer vacation disrupts the rhythm of instruction, leads to forgetting and requires time be spent reviewing old material when students return to school in the fall. My advice? Teachers, you need to be careful about what and how much summer homework you assign. Summer homework shouldn’t be expected to overcome a student’s learning deficits; that’s what summer school is for. Parents, if the assignments are clear and reasonable, support the teachers. ”
Nancy Kalish, co-author of the Case Against Homework: “Schools should rethink summer homework, and not just because it stresses out kids (and parents). The truth is, homework doesn’t accomplish what we assume it does. According to a Duke University review of more than 175 studies, there is little or no connection between homework and standardized test score or long-term achievement in primary school.”
Mark Bauerlein, professor of English at Emory University: “To the general question of whether or not schools should assign summer homework, the answer is ‘Yes.’ The reason comes not only from the brain drain of summer. It relates also to an attitude young people take toward education. They tie knowledge to the syllabus, not to themselves. They read and study to write the paper and score highly in the test, not to furnish their minds. In a word, they regard learning as a classroom thing. That’s all.”
It seems to me that summer homework is a good idea to keep the brain cells moving, but like everything else it should be given in moderation.
21. Harris Cooper seems to believe that________.
A. more summer homework causes students’ learning difficulties
B. students should go to summer school if they have no homework
C. teachers should give careful consideration to summer homework
D. parents should tell teachers how much homework their kids need
22. In the 4th paragraph, Nancy Kalish explains her idea by________.
A. making comparisons B. giving research findings
C. raising questions D. telling stories
23. Mark Bauerlein might agree that summer homework________.
A. should be based on the school’s teaching program
B. has no direct connection to students’ higher grades
C. brings more pressure to both students and their parents
D. helps students develop the right attitude toward learning
Uncle Li and Uncle Wang are good friends. They live next to each other and their farms are both at the foot of the mountain. So they can help each other. But neither of them likes to use his head. They're both poor though they work hard. Most villagers have built new houses, but they still live in the low and broken houses. They never find out why.
Once Uncle Li went to town to buy some medicine for his wife. In the town he heard the apples in a city were expensive. He told Uncle Wang about it as soon as he went back. They decided to carry some apples to the city. They borrowed some money from their friends and bought nearly 1,000 kilograms of apples in the villages and carried them to the city on a tractor. Bad luck! A lot of apples had already been carried there when they arrived. A few days later they had to sell them at a low price (价格)。They felt unhappy and returned to their village.
"I can't understand why we sustained (蒙受) losses in business while others always profit (盈利)" Uncle Li asked one day.
"The tractor was too small " Uncle Wang said without thinking. "We'll carry more apples on a truck next time!"
"I agree!" said Uncle Li. "How foolish (傻的) we were !"
33. Uncle Li and Uncle Wang live in the low and broken houses because __________.

C. their farms are at the foot of the mountain D. they're not far from their farms
34. The two farmers carried the apples to the city to _________.

C. meet their friends D. make a profit
35. the two farmers had to sell their apples at a low price because ________.

A man enters a store to buy milk. He walks out of the store with milk. That is all-milk. At the same time, a woman enters the same grocery store also to buy milk. She buys it. But she also buys chicken and lemons to make dinner that night. Then she remembers to buy food for her son to eat at school. She also gets a bottle of wine for drinks with friends and a birthday card for her husband’s niece. Then she gets coffee for breakfast, ice cream for dessert and remembers stamps to mail the bills. And don’t forget soap for the bathroom.
And that is the difference between the female and male brains simply explained in a grocery store.
Generally speaking, men do one thing at a time. Women do many. Now scientific research supports this theory about male and female brains. A recent study has confirmed what we have known all along—men and women think differently.
Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania studied brain images of 949 people aged from eight to 22 years old. They found that male brains have more connections on one side of the brain, or hemisphere. In the female brains, they found more activity and connections between the right and left sides of the brain. The left side of the brain is known as the side of “reason.” The right hemisphere is known as the “creative” side.
Regina Verma is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. She co-wrote the report. She says when women are asked to do something difficult they might use different parts of the brain. Men, she adds, generally use just one side of the brain. As a result, men generally deal directly with a problem. There is a strong connection between the “understanding” and the “action” parts of their brains. Women, however, might include other parts of the brain when solving a problem. Women take a less direct path to find a solution.
25. The author mentioned the shopping in Paragraph 1 to___________.
A. show women’s carefulness B. prove men’s quick action
C. object to an opinion D. bring up the topic to be discussed
26. The main idea of Paragraph 4 is that ___________. 111]
A. women have two same brains on both sides B. men have more complicated brains than women
C. different kinds of brain images have been studied D. men’s structure of brain is different from women’s
27.What causes the difference between men’s and women’s behavior?
A. Watching things from different sides. B. Having different attitudes towards life.
C. Using different parts of the brain to think. D. Reacting at different speed to problems.
