The way to lift up your mood
Everyone has periods in their lives when everything seems very hard, when there’s nobody to talk to and the mood (情绪)is just getting worse and worse. 36
The first thing you should try is socializing and thinking positively. It’s very hard, because usually when we feel sad we lock ourselves at home and try to think about all the bad things we have. Bui if you’ll try to force yourself and call a friend for a cup of coffee, the chances for changing your mood into better are very good. Just try to avoid bad thoughts. 37
38 It could be something you wanted for a long time —a short trip, a coat, a ring or anything that could lift up your mood. It doesn’t have to be costly, but it has to be good to yourself.
Not only giving gifts to yourself can lift up your mood. 39 Think of your friends, family, relatives or even local charities (慈善机构), choose one person and give him a gift. It doesn’t have to be something expensive or big. It may be just a little toy to your poor neighbor’s child. Making another person feel happy will make you feel good in your heart and mind.
Take control of your feelings. Don’t let them control you. 40 Just follow the advice above and start doing something.
A. Cry aloud if you feel it is necessary.
B. Here are some things that may help you lift up your mood.
C. Making yourself feel better isn’t that hard.
D. Buying things to others may be a perfect way to feel happy.
E. Do your best to find someone to talk to.
F. Instead, try to think about the bright side of your life.
G. You should also try doing something only for yourself, something totally selfish.
Have you ever run into a careless cell phone user on the street? Perhaps they were busy talking, testing or checking updates on WeChat without looking at what was going on around them. As the number of this new “species” of human has kept rising, they have been given a new name — phubbers (低头族).![]()
Recently, a cartoon created by students from China Central Academy of Fine Arts put this group of people under the spotlight. In the short film, phubbers with various social identities bury themselves in their phones. A doctor plays with his cell phone while letting his patient die, a pretty woman takes selfie in front of a car accident site and a father loses his child without knowing about it while using his mobile phone. A chain of similar events eventually leads to the destruction of the world.
Although the ending sounds overstated, the damage phubbing can bring is real. Your health is the first to bear the effect and result of it. “Constantly bending your head to check your cell phone could damage your neck
,” Guangming Daily quoted
doctors as saying. “The neck is like a rope that breaks after long-term stretching.” Also, staring at cell phones for long periods of time will damage your eyesight gradually, according to the report.
But that’s not all. Being a phubber could also damage your social skills and drive you away from your friends and family. At reunions with family or friends, many people tend to stick to their cell phones while others are chatting happily with each other and this creates a strange atmosphere, Qilu Evening News reported.
It can also cost you your life. There have been lots of reports on phubbers who fell to their death, suffered accidents, and were robbed of their cell phones in broad daylight.
32. For what purpose does the author give the example of a cartoon in Para. 2 ?[

I was feeling splendid (精彩的) this morning! When approaching the bakery I saw a man asking for coins. I’ve often seen him and usually don’t react well to his whiney (嘀咕不停的) tone of his voice. This time I decided I’d give him something. After I’d paid for my tea-to-go, I got a 5 Euro bill ready. Leaving the store really slowly so he’d have a good chance to approach me, I nearly ran into him.
“Would you maybe have some coins for me?” He asked.
I said, “No, sorry, I don’t,” and watched his face fall already at what he thought was a refusal, one of many thousands he probably gets each day.
“I only have this for you”, I said and held the bill in front of his eyes. The way his jaw nearly fell and his eyes widened were priceless.
“Err ... wow!” he said, doing a double-take. “That’s really ... Thanks.”
“No problem,” I said. “I’m doing well at the moment, and I wanted to share it — have a good day!”
And I walked away. Actually, I walked away leisurely (悠闲地), and I did giggle and laugh out loud for the next 200 meters. Really, you should have seen his face. He totally had not seen that coming! The joy, I think, did not just come from the fact that I love being generous. It also came from breaking up his expectations of what would happen, to allow for that tiny moment of amazement.

Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.
36 Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger.
For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person’s health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones (荷尔蒙). They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc. 37
Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.
38 They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “ 39 Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.”
Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. 40
A. In general the person feels excited and ready to act
B. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger.
C. Expressing anger violently is more harmful than repressing it
D. Anger may cause you a cancer.
E. Do not express your anger while angry.
F. Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time.
G. Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger.

Dear Jack,
How is everything going recently? I’m writing to tell you something more about my birthday. The other day we hold a party to celebrate my 18th birthday. I received many presents from my friends and parents, including cards, books, CDs or so on. During the party we sang and danced, having good time. I thanked my friends for his help and company. At the meantime, I showed my sincere appreciation to my parents for bringing me up. Now I grow up, that means I should shoulder more responsibilities. I’ll try my best to share more houseworks to reduce their burden. It’s high time that I do something to repay them.
How did you celebrate your 18th birthday? I’ m looking forward to hear from you soon.
Yours Sincerely
Li Jin

Elderly adults who regularly drink green tea may stay more sharp and independent than their peers over time, according to a Japanese study that covered thousands of people.
Green tea contains antioxidant chemicals that may help stop the cell damage that can lead to disease. Researchers have been studying green tea's effect on everything from cholesterol (胆固醇) to the risk of certain cancers, with mixed results so far.
They found those who drank the most green tea were the least likely to develop ''functional disability'', or problems with daily activities or basic needs, such as dressing or bathing.
Specifically, almost 13 percent of adults who drank less than a cup of green tea per day became functionally disabled, compared with just over 7 percent of people who drank at least five cups a day.
The study did not prove that green tea alone kept people sharp as they grew older. Green-tea lovers generally had healthier diets, including more fish, vegetables and fruit, as well as more education, lower smoking rates, fewer heart attacks and strokes, and greater mental sharpness. They also tended to be more socially active and have more friends and family to rely on. But even with those factors accounted for, green tea itself was tied to a lower disability risk, the researchers said.
People who drank at least five cups a day were one-third less likely to develop disabilities than those who had less than a cup per day. Those people who averaged three or four cups a day had a 25 percent lower risk.
Although it's not clear how green tea might help against disability, Tomata's team did note that one recent study found green tea extracts (提取物) seem to increase leg muscle strength in older women.
While green tea and its extracts are considered safe in small amounts, they do contain caffeine and small amounts of vitamin K, which means it could affect drugs that prevent blood clotting (凝固).

Kong zi, also called Confucius(551-479 B.C), and Socrates (469-399 B.C) lived only a hundred years apart, and during their lifetimes there was no contact between China and Greece, but it is interesting to look at how the world that each of these great philosophers came from shaped their ideas, and how these ideas in turn, shaped their societies.
Neither philosopher lived in times of peace, though there were more wars in Greece than in China. The Chinese states were very large and feudal, while the Greek city-states were small and urban. The urban environment in which Socrates lived allowed him to be more radical(激进的) than Confucius. Unlike Confucius, Socrates was not asked by rules how to govern effectively. Thus, Socrates was able to be more idealistic, focusing on issues like freedom, and knowledge for its own sake. Confucius, on the other hand, advised those in government service, and many of his students went out to government service.
Confucius suggested the Golden Rule as a principle for the conduct of life:" Do not do to others what you would not want others to do to you. "He assumed that all men were equal at birth, though some had more potential than others, and that it was knowledge that set men apart. Socrates focused on the individual, and thought that the greatest purpose of man was to seek wisdom. He believed that some had more potential to develop their reason than others did. Like Confucius, he believed that the superior class should rule the inferior (下层的) classes.
For Socrates, the family was of no importance, and the community of little concern. For Confucius, however, the family was the center of the society, with family relations considered much more important than political relations.
Both men are respected much more today than they were in their lifetimes.
29. Which of the following is TRUE according to the first paragraph?
A. Socrates and Confucius had much in common.
B. Confucius had much influence on Socrates’ ideas.
C. The societies were influenced by the philosophers’ ideas.
D. There were cultural exchanges between China and Greece.
30. What made some people different from others according to Confucius?

A. all men were equal when they were born
B. the lower classes should be ruled by the upper class
C. the purpose of man was to seek freedom and wisdom
D. people should not ask others to do what they did not want to
32. This passage is organized in the pattern of ________.
A. time and events B. comparison and contrast

Eyes can speak
Much meaning can be conveyed clearly with our eyes, so it is often said that eyes can speak.
16 In a bus you may look at a stranger, but not for too long. And if he senses that you are staring at him, he may feel uncomfortable.
The same is true in our daily life. If you are stared at for more than necessary, you will look at yourself up and down to see if there is anything wrong with you. 17 Eyes do speak, right?
Looking too long at someone may seem to be rude and aggressive. 18 If a man stares at a woman for more than 10 seconds and refuses to look away from her, his intentions are obvious. He wishes to attract her attention and let her know that he is admiring her.
However, when two people are engaged in a conversation, the speaker will only look into the listener’s eyes from time to time to make sure that the listener does pay attention to what the former is speaking. 19 If a speaker looks at you continuously when speaking as if trying to control you, you will feel awkward. A poor liar usually exposes himself by looking to long at the victim. He wrongly believes that looking straight in the eye is a sign of honest communication. 20
Actually, eye contact should be made based on specific relationships and situations.
A. On the contrary, it will give him away.
B. Do you have such kind of experience?
C. That’s what normal eye contact is all about .
D. Actually , continuous eye contact is limited to lovers only.
E. After all, nobody likes to be stared at for quite a long time.
F. But things are different when it comes to staring at the opposite sex.
G. If nothing goes wrong, you will feel annoyed at being stared at that way.

The World Wide Web is so common and popular that not a day goes by when we don’t use the World Wide Web. Today it has become almost as important to every family as food and water! This year, the World Wide Web has turned 25 years old. What many people don’t know is that the web was at first created to improve communication between thousands of scientists in Switzerland.
In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee was a 34-year-old British physicist working as a software engineer at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research in Switzerland. Since CERN was a huge organization with thousands of scientists, communication between them was becoming increasingly difficult.
Berners-Lee wanted to develop a system to solve the problem. His pa
per suggested an information system, where a page on one computer could have a link to another page on another co
mputer (connected through the Internet), allowing scientists to read lots of information quickly. However, Berners-Lee’s boss said that it sounded exciting but impossible.
Even though there were many difficulties and few supporters, Berners-Lee went on to develop the World Wide Web. He came up with ideas such as Hyper-text Transfer Protocol (超文本传输协议) to allow computers to talk to each other, Hyper-text Markup Language (HTML) to create the pages, a server to serve the pages, and a b
rowser (浏览器) to see them.
In December 1990, the World Wide Web was demonstrated (展示) and in 1991, the WWW project was made public, so that other programmers could develop their own browsers. Berners-Lee believed that it could be used for more than scientific purposes. He wanted the Internet to be easy for anyone to use — a free open
software. His wishes soon came true.
Although the World Wide Web has today turned into a completely different thing from what it meant at first, it has become necessary and important to our lives, powering our mobile technologies and the way we get information.
29. The World Wide Web was created to _____.

31. According to the text, Berners-Lee _____.
A. doesn’t give up easily when in trouble B. is a 55-year-old Swiss physicist
C. has worked at CERN for 25 years D. knows little about the Internet
32. What would be the best title for the text?
A. The popularity of the web. B. World Wide Web turns 25!
C. Tips on improving the website. D. Interview with Tim Berners-Lee.
An Announcement
In a small town by the sea, most people lived by catching fish. The hurricanes often struck the area from July to October. Some of the people died on the sea when their boats were blown over by the heavy winds. So they paid much attention to the weather forecast. They were afraid to meet with the hurricanes when they were catching fish on the sea. Each of the families had a radio and people always took them with themselves and listened to them at any time.
It was September. A hurricane attacked the town one night. Plenty of trees were pushed over and all the electrics and telephone lines were broken. People couldn't watch TV, or call their friends, or go to work. To their anger, they couldn't listen to the weather forecast the Town Radio Station broadcast. The food and fresh water would soon be short and the patients couldn't be given medical care—no medicine could be carried there. People didn't know what would happen and they looked anxious.
On the fourth day they read an announcement on the Town Weekly. It was written, "Recently we have to stop the weather forecast because of the bad weather. We usually get the forecast from the airport. But the roads are all blocked by the fallen trees and stones. Whether or not we'll be able to broadcast the weather forecast tomorrow depends on the weather!"
