There is one____81_____(celebrate) that happens in Britain and nowhere else in the world. It is called Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night and takes place every year __82_____ November 5th. It is particular because, unlike most festivals, it celebrates something that did not happen.

Guy Fawkes lived in England in the 17th century. At this time in Europe there were two kinds of Christian and they were often at war with each other. Guy Fawkes was one kind of Christian, a Catholic (天主教), but the government of England usually supported the Protestant (新教) cause. When King James of Scotland became king of England in 1603, he seemed happy to be friendly___83___ both Catholics and Protestants and let them both practise Christianity in __84__ own ways. Later he changed his mind. This upset Guy Fawkes very much.

On October 10th, 1605 one of Fawkes' Catholic friends, ___85____(name) Catesby, asked him if he would support a plan to change the government and replace it____86__ another that supported the Catholic cause. Fawkes, disappointed at the government's behaviour, ____87____(agree). Ten days before the plan, Fawkes and Catesby arranged to buy a house close to the Houses of Parliament. This house had cellars (地窖) that ___88__(lie) under the Houses of Parliament. During the next three days Catesby and Fawkes bought large containers of gunpowder and stored them in the cellar. They waited for the opening of Parliament on November 6th when the king and all his advisers would be there for the meeting. But, unfortunately for Fawkes and Catesby, King James heard about the plan and decided to search those cellars. Catesby took flight but Fawkes waited by the gunpowder to start the fire. Of course the soldiers found him before he could do anything and he was taken to the Tower of London to be killed.

The following day there were celebrations all over England because the plan had been discovered in time. Fireworks were lit and bonfires burned. King James decided that he did not want his people "to forget how close the government had come to disaster. So he made November 5th into a yearly celebration. That is ___89____, even today, when people can follow any religion they like, families still have firework parties and burn cloth dolls of Guy Fawkes on a bonfire. They remember a time in England ___90_____ people were not as tolerant (容忍的) of each other's ideas as they are now.

Planning ahead so far ______no sense—so many things will have changed by next year.

A gunman opened fire in Orlando’s Pulse nightclub early morning Sunday , killing approximately 50 people and injuring another 53 .

Clubbers were enjoying an evening at Pulse , which describes itself as “ the hottest gay bar in Orlando , ” when shots started to go off around 2 am. A hostage人质situation occurred , and didn’t end until authorities used a vehicle armed to teeth to break down the door of the building and kill the gunman at around 5 am .

Sunday morning’s attack surpasses the shootings at Virginia Tech in 2007 and Sndy Hook Elementary School in 2012 to become the worst mass shooting in US history .

Authorities have identified the shooter as 29-year-old Omar Saddiqui Mateen from Fort Pierce , about 120 miles southeast of Orlando . CNN reports Mr. Mateen was previously trained as a security guard .

The federal government and FBI “ have suggestions the individual has leanings towards Islamic terrorism , but right now we can’t say definitely , ” says Ron Hopper , assistant special agent of FBI’s Orlando bureau . But Mateen’s connection to Islamic terrorism has not been proven , leading authorities to also investigate the shooting as a possible hate crime against the LGBT community .

The Orlando blood donation facility tweeted推送that the bank was in “ urgent need ” of donations Sunday morning following the shooting . But within hours , they announced their bank was at capacity due to the long lines of volunteers who showed up to donate .

However , after the initial tweet at 10:40 Sunday morning , criticisms of the United States’ stand on blood donation by the LGBT community resurfaced on social media from those who wanted to help but were prohibited due to their sexuality .

“ It’s legal to buy an AR-15 assault rifle . It’s illegal for a gay man to donate blood to victims of the massacre . The world makes no sense . ” said John Barcus .

Zheng Pengyu: Interest is the best teacher. Classrooms that weren’t fixed could give students the chance to explore their interests. At the same time, they would be able to learn on their own because they would have to make their own decisions. All in all, the new system would be a good chance to inspire students’ love for studying.
Sun Yao: Despite its benefits, I’m worried about whether the new system would work. Going to different classrooms would take up a big part of our break time and we would have less time to relax after class. Also, not all schools could offer so many different classes.
Shi Zhenghan: I support students learning in different classes. It would solve the problem of some students thinking the classes are too easy while some think they are too difficult. Teachers could also teach more effectively. What’ s more, friendships built while in different classes might be a pleasant surprise.
Zhou Qingqing: In my opinion, studying in different classrooms might affect students’ psychological development. They might find it difficult to develop deep and strong friendships with other students if they had to change classrooms constantly. They would also lose their sense of belonging to a certain class.
Hu Qile: I applaud the idea. It would help teachers set up special teaching plans for different classes. For students, making choices by themselves could encourage them to be responsible. Changing classrooms could also help remove the boredom of doing the same dull routine (惯例) every day.
Wang Xiaoqian: The new system might help with students’ individual development, but I still prefer the current system. Studying in one fixed classroom, students with different academic levels can help each other. Spending your senior middle school years with the same classmates is an unfortgettable experience.

21. According to Sun Yao, which of the following sentences is TRUE?

D. Changing classrooms can help with students’ individual development.

Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis was one of the most private women in the world, yet when she went to work as an editor in the last two decades of her life, she revealed (展现) herself as she did nowhere else.

After the death of her second husband, Greek shipping magnate (巨头) Aristotle Onassis, Jacqueline's close friend and former White House social secretary Letitis Baldrige made a suggestion that she consider a career in publishing. After consideration, Jacqueline accepted it. Perhaps she hoped to find there some ideas about how to live her own life. She became not less but more interested in reading. For the last 20 years of her life, Jacqueline worked as a publisher's editor, first at Viking, then at Doubleday, pursuing(追求)a latelife career longer than her two marriages combined. During her time in publishing, she was responsible for managing and editing more than 100 successfully marketed books. Among the first books were In the Russian Style and Inventive Paris Clothes. She also succeeded in persuading TV hosts Bill Moyers and Joseph Campbell to transform their popular television conversation into a book, The Power of Myth. The book went on to become an international bestseller. She dealt, too, with Michael Jackson as he prepared his autobiography(自传), Moonwalk.

Jacqueline may have been hired for her name and for her social relations, but she soon proved her worth. Her choices, suggestions and widespread social relations were of benefit both to the publishing firms and to Jacqueline herself. In the books she selected for publication, she built on a lifetime of spending time by herself as a reader and left a record of the growth of her mind. Her books are the autobiography she never wrote. Her role as First Lady, in the end, was overshadowed by her performance as an editor. However, few knew that she had achieved so much.

How could we possibly think that keeping animals in cages in unnatural environments, mostly for entertainment purposes, is fair and respectful?

Zoo officials say they are concerned about animals. However, most zoos remain “collections” of interesting “things” rather than protective habitats. Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely, and far from their natural homes.

Zoos claim to educate people and save endangered species, but visitors leave zoos without having learned anything meaningful about the animals’ natural behavior, intelligence, or beauty. Zoos keep animals in small spaces or cages, and most signs only mention the species’ name, diet, and natural range. The animals’ normal behavior is seldom noticed because zoos don’t usually take care of the animals’ natural needs.

The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and physical exercise. This results in unusually and self-destructive behavior called zoo-chosis(圈禁性精神病). A worldwide study of zoos found that zoochosis is common among animals kept in small spaces or cages. Another study showed that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated head movements or biting cage bars, and bears spend 30 percent of their time walking back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.

Furthermore, most animals in zoos are not endangered. Captive breeding(圈养繁殖) of endangered big cats, Asian elephants, and other species has not resulted in their being sent back to the wild. Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding programs because they do not want people to worry about a species dying out. In fact, baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers. Haven’t we seen enough competitions to name baby animals?

Actually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and put an end to the reasons people kill them. Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect animals’ natural habitats.

12. How would the author describe the animals’ life in zoos?

A. Easy    B. Unhealthy

C. Unhappy    D. Dangerous.

13. In the state of zoochosis, animals usually_________.

C. Zoos should treat animals as human beings.

D. Zoos use animals as a means of entertainment.

15. What can we infer from the text?

A. It’s acceptable to keep animals away from their habitats

B. Visitors can learn a lot about animals after visiting the zoo

C. Zoos often pay much attention to the animals’ natural lifestyle

D. Zoos can earn some money from their captive breeding programs

The new high-speed railway line between Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uygur(维吾尔族) self-governing region, and Lanzhou, capital of Gansu province, has cut train travel time by half to less than 12 hours.

The dramatic improvement will benefit many families planning reunions for the Spring Festival.

“For the first time, I feel home is not that far away after all,” said Liang Shaofu as he boarded a high-speed train in Urumqi with six members of his family. The 35-year-old left Lanzhou to set up a dry fruit business in Xinjiang eight years ago, and he has now settled in Urumqi. “We normally drive home for the Spring Festival to avoid the difficulties of buying seven train tickets for the whole family during the peak season,” Liang said. “Driving can be very tiring and dangerous sometimes, so one year we even decided not to go back to Lanzhou simply to avoid the trip.”

More than 600,000 passengers traveled on the line during its first month, and the Urumqi Railway Bureau said the introduction of high-speed services will ease transport pressure during the Spring Festival peak season.

The existing usual railway line could no longer support Xinjiang’s development. All passenger trains will gradually shift to the new line, leaving the old ones to be used for goods. As a result, Xinjiang’s annual goods ability could reach 200 million metric tons(公吨) from the current 70 million.

The line passes through areas that experience high winds, and it also crosses parts of the deserted Qinghai-Tibet Plateau高原 and the bone-dry sands of the Gobi Desert.

The project could help China to promote its high-speed railway technology abroad, said Ma Xizhang, director of the Lanzhou-Xinjiang railway project’s management department in Xinjiang.

A. About 24 hours.                       B. About 6 hours.

C. About 18 hours.                            D. about 12 hours.

25. What’s the main advantage of the new high-speed railway?

A. It takes more time to go to Urumqi to Lanzhou.

B. It will be more convenient for people all over the country to Xinjiang.

C. All the people in Lanzhou can return home on festivals.

D. It helps to improve Xinjiang’s development.

26. From the passage we can learn _______.

Warm weather brought by El Nino has had mixed effects on animals in usually snowy places in North America, including New England, according to an Associated Press article.

Some animals seem to benefit from having a chance to gather more food before winter, and from expending less energy in daily survival mode. Others, like snowshoe hares, are put at center stage in predators(捕食者) view when they lack snow for disguising(掩饰) their white fur not a god thing for them, of course.

Black bears, on the other hand, have been keeping busy gathering nuts and apples, when they would normally have settled into their winter homes by now. Vermont and Massachusetts officials have asked residents(居民) to wait till snow falls to take out their bird feeders for the sake of safety, the article said.

We suggest waiting for 6 or more inches of snow that lasts before taking out your bird feeders, especially if you have been visited in the past by bears or if there are sightings of bears in your neighborhood, Forrest Hammond, Vermont Fish and Wildlifes bear biologist, said in the article. Due to lack of snow and frozen ground, birds are able to seek food in fields and forests for their natural foods.

Snow amounts can also determine how comfortable bears are and how quickly they consume their accumulated fat during hibernation(冬眠), noted Hammond in the article. This is because snow covers and traps them in their winter homes, and also hides them from predators.

12. What may upset snowshoe hares because of El Nino?

A. Their being caught more easily.

B. Their failing to gather more food.

C. Their consuming more energy.

D. Their losing sight of their enemies.

C. Bears live mainly on birds in winter.

D. Warm weather benefits birds in winter.

15. Which of the following is the proper title for the passage?

A. Warm Weather Helps Animals Survive

C. Measures Should Be Taken To Protect Wildlife

D. Lack of Snow Affects North American Animals

I travel a lot, and I find out different “styles” of directions every time 1 ask “How can I get to the post office?”

Foreign tourists are often confused in Japan because most streets there don’t have names; in Japan, people use landmarks in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”

In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat; in many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.”

People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map; they measure distance in time, not miles. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,” they answer, “it’s about five minutes from here.” You say, “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They don’t know.

It’s true that a person doesn’t know the answer to your question sometimes. What happens in such a situation? A New Yorker might say, ‘Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “I don’t know.” People in Yucatan believe that “I don’t know” is impolite, They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A tourist can get very, very lost in Yucatan!

Most Americans believe that someone isn’t grown-up until the age of 26 and they should complete their education, have a full-time job, have a family to support and be financially independent. They also believe that becoming a real grown-up is a process which begins at about the age of 20 and takes about five years, according to the report from the University of Chicago’s National Opinion Research Center
The findings are based on a representative sample of 1,398 people over the age of 18 who were surveyed in person. The survey found that people expect the transitions to grown-up status to be completed at the following ages: age 20.9 self-supporting; age 21.1 no longer living with parents; age 21.2 having a full-time job; age 22.3 education completed; age 24.5 being able to support a family financially; age 25.7 getting married; and age 26.2 having a child.
“There is a large degree of agreement across social groups on the relative importance of the seven transitions,” said Tom Smith, director of the surveyThe only obvious pattern of differences is on views about supporting a family, having children and getting marriedOlder adults consider these more important than younger adults doThis probably shows in large part a change in values across generations away from traditional family valuesThe most valued step toward reaching adulthood, the survey found, is completing education, followed by full-time employment, supporting a family, financial independence, living independently, and marriage.

Even if you think that your parents are mean-spirited at times, loving your parents is a normal and fulfilling part of life. You love them for the fact that they created you, raised you, and are in part, a source of who you are.   9   .

Tell them you love them every morning. A gentle “good morning” and “I love you” will warm a coldest heart. Remember that they brought you into this world. Without your parents, you might still wander at an unknown corner in an unknown world.

Respect them more and cherish these moments. You can use these moments to learn from them, preparing yourself for when you’re off on your own. It’s OK to get angry but angry actions don’t help you or your parents. Act calmly, cool off, write down your feelings, or talk to a friend.   10   .

Obey their requests. It will make your attitude better and earn you more respect from them. It may seem like you are going through hell when you don’t get what you want or you have to clean. However, you had better remember they keep a roof over your head when it’s cold, raining, snowing, or too hot. Understand that parents are human beings and make mistakes.  11   Since you can forgive your friends, why not forgive your parents?

Keep company with them. Do things with your parents like watching TV, or going somewhere with them.  12   Listen to their old stories and learn from them. You will find they are your teachers in this way or another.

Some people simply may not be able to love their parents.  13   Seek help if you are being abused in any way. Parents do not have a right to harm you.

Li Hui, my friend in high school, has dreamed becoming a cartoon artist since she was young. To her disappointed, her parents don’t agree with her decision at first. Therefore, Li Hui would not change her mind. She worked hardly to perfect her skills. Just before he finished high school, the chance came: the famous art school was holding a cartoon drawing competition. The first three winner would be given a scholarship to study drawing there. Li Hui told herself not to missing the chance. She readily entered the competition and came second. She is now a student in that school and I feel it certain that her dream will come true.

Why do we like drinking water from plastic bottles(塑料瓶)? Some people think it is healthy and clean. Others drink bottled water because it’s easy — you can carry it around with you. In hot countries, like Greece, we often buy bottles of cold water in the summer.

However, making lots of plastic is not a good idea for many reasons. First of all, we need a lot of oil for plastic products. We usually use oil as a source of energy. If we reduced the number of bottles we made, we wouldn’t need so much oil. Plastic bottles also pollute the environment. If we reused all our plastic bottles, we wouldn’t need so much space for rubbish dumps. But in Greece, we don’t reuse much of the plastic we use. In 2006, Greeks reused only about 10% of plastic waste. The rest became rubbish on land and in rivers and seas.

So next time you want to throw away a plastic bottle in the litter bin, stop and think. If you reuse it, you would help the environment. But what can you do when there isn’t a bin near you? Well, there are lots of useful ways that you can use your bottles again. For example, an empty bottle makes a great piggy bank for your pocket money, and if you cut a bottle in half, you will have a plant pot. Go green! You can make a difference.
