高二英语试题

A letter from Grandpa

Dear Ronny,
Years ago you came to me for help. You said, “Grandpa, how is it that you’ve accomplished so much in your life? You’re still full of    1    and I’m already tired of struggling. How can I get that same    2    that you’ve got?”
I didn’t know what to say to you then. But knowing my days are  3  , I figure that I   4   you an answer. So here is what I believe.

I think a lot of it has to do with how a person    5    things. I call it ”keeping your eyes wide open”.
First, realize that life is filled with   6  , but many are good ones. If you don’t keep watching for them, you’ll miss half the excitement. Expect to be thrilled once in a while, and you will be.
When you meet up with challenges,   7   them. They’ll leave you wiser,    8  , and more capable than you were the day before. When you make a mistake, be   9   for the things it taught you. Resolve (
决心) to use that lesson to help you reach your goals.

And always follow the rules. Even the little ones. When you follow the rules, life works. If you think you ever really get by with   10    the rules, you’re only fooling yourself.
Sometimes we have to be    11    enough to move from the familiar to the unfamiliar. Life isn’t just reaching   12 .  Part of it is moving from one peak to the next. If you rest too long in between, you might be tempted to    13   . Leave the past in the past. Climb the next mountain and enjoy the view.
Dump things that weigh you down   14    and spiritually. When an old resentment (
怨恨), belief, or attitude becomes heavy,   15     your load. Get rid of those hurtful  16      that slow you down and drain (消耗) your energy.
Remember that your choices will create your  17  and your failures. So consider all the pathways    18   and decide which one to follow. Then believe in yourself, get up, and get going.
Most important of all,    19   give up on yourself. The person hat ends up a winter is the one who resolves to win. Give life everything you’ve got, and life will   20    it’s best to you.

Love always

I remember picking up my first magazine when I was eleven years old. It was celebrity monthly for teens — and I had a deep interest in it. Every week it would arrive y mailbox in suburban Wisconsin. I would race up to my bedroom and read the whole thing one sitting. It was filled with perfect Hollywood stars, dating and beauty tips and gossip. I felt  like I was “ in the know.”

My subscription(订阅)list expanded as I got older — to Seventeen, Teen Vogue, and  Glamour. I would read each issue back to back, taking in the messages of what resulted in the perfect boyfriend, body and life. I was a typical teen girl, and I was obsessed with these things —always wondering why I was only six inches tall. I would diet and exercise, but I never seemed to look like the women in my magazines.

As I grew older, I started to realize that most of the images I was comparing myself with weren’t realistic. I read about how images are retouched, and it brought me down to reality. Suddenly, I had a new obsession: starting a magazine where the models were everyday girls and women who looked like me. My dream job was to be the editor-in-chief of a women's magazine — but one thing is much different from our ordinary magazines. The magazine wouldn't focus on celebrities. Everyone would just be real people with real stories.

As it turns out, there are two women who are pursuing just that — via the first “no photoshop” fashion magazine, a bi-monthly one called Verily, which published its first issue in June. Verily never changes the body or face of its models. The goal of our magazine is to celebrate the best state of us.

Since Abbi Hickman was just a little girl, she has been surrounded by animals. Chickens, cats, a dog, rabbits, and sometimes goats are just some of the animals she cares for. At the age of 9, Abbi went to the Tracy Animal Shelter, in her hometown of Tracy, California, to adopt Sheldon, her favorite cat. There, she saw the poor conditions that the animals were kept in. Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.

During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel the most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues (自言自语) as John talks to himself: “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation for the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.

You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Adjust your cycle to some extent by staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam (打起精神) and work better at your low point.

Begin with a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a slow yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do usual work in the afternoon and spend time doing important work for your high peak hours.

32. According to Dr. Kleitman if you don’t want to get up in the morning ____________.

   C. your energy cycle must be low          D. you should stay in bed

33. Which of the following may lead to family quarrels according to the passage?

   A. A change in a family member’s energy cycle.  111]

B. Familiar monologues.

C. Unawareness of energy cycles.

D. Attempts to control the energy cycle of other family members.

34. If one wants to work better at his low point in the morning, he should ____________.

   A. change his energy cycle                    B. go to bed earlier

   C. overcome his laziness                       D. get up earlier than usual

35. You are advised to rise with a yawn and stretch because it will _________________.

   A. help you to control your temper early in the day

   B. help to keep your energy for the day’s work

   C. enable you to concentrate on your routine work

The Pathfinder

When we found him, he was a sorry sight. His clothes were torn, his hands bleeding. Before we reached him, we saw him fall. He lay a moment. Then he pulled himself to his feet, walked unsteadily a few yards through the woods and fell again.

After we got him out, we went back to find the gun that he had thrown down. His tracks showed that for two days he had circled in the forest, within 200 yards of the road. His senses were so dulled by fear and tiredness that he did not hear the cars going by or see the lights at night.

We found him just in time.

This man, like others before him, had simply been frightened when he knew he was lost. What had been a near disaster might have turned out as only a pleasant walk, had he made a few preparations before he stepped from the highway or off a known path.

Whatever sense of direction that a man may have, it’s still largely a question of observation. A skilled woodsman always keeps an eye on his surroundings. He notes that the shape of a mountain, the direction water flows through a swamp, and the way a tree leans across a path. With these in mind, he may be turned around many times, but he is seldom lost.

There are exceptions, of course, and once in a while a man does come across some strange problem that puts him into the “lost” situation. A rainstorm or sudden blizzard may catch him without a compass (指南针) in his pocket. Darkness may find him in a rough area, where travel is dangerous without a light.

When this happens, the normal first reaction (反应) is the fear of being laughed at as a result of his poor knowledge in the woods. He may also be concerned about the inconvenience that he will cause his friends when he doesn’t show up. This false pride may lead him to keep on the move in a false effort to find his way against all difficulties.

The person who thinks ahead is seldom in great danger. He’ll be safe if he observes carefully, thinks ahead, and remains calm.

8.The author suggested that if the man had not been found, he would have ________.

A. been shot by a gun                         B. become confused

C. been attacked by wild animals          D. been in great danger

9.According to the passage, if a person gets lost in the forest, at the very beginning, he would _______.

A. worry about being laughed at

B. push himself to find his way out

C. feel it is convenient to ask for help from his friends

D. be concerned about being frightened by wild animals

10.When a person tries to find his way in the woods, _________ is the most important.

A. intelligence       B. observation        C. direction        D. chance

11.The author tells the story of the lost man as an example of people who _________.

A. go into the woods by themselves

Like most of my friends, I have neither sisters or brothers. In other words, I am a only child. My parents love me so dear that they would do anything they can make sure that I’ll be well educated. They never allowed me to do any housework because they want me to devote all my time to study my lessons to get good marks in exams. We are one family live under the same roof, but we seldom have time to talk about with each other. They always treat me as if I am a guest. Do they really understand me? How are things going in the other one-child family?

Foxes and farmers have never got on well. These small dog-like animals have long been accused of killing farm animals. They are officially considered as harmful and farmers try to keep their numbers down by shooting or poisoning them.

Farmers can also call on the services of their local hunt to control the fox population. Hunting consists of running after a fox across the countryside, with a group of specially trained dogs, followed by men and women riding horses. When the dogs eventually catch the fox they kill it or a hunter shoots it.

People who take part in hunting think of it as a sport; they wear a special uniform of red coats and white trousers, and follow strict principles of behavior. But owning a horse and hunting regularly is expensive, so most hunters are wealthy.

It is estimated that up to 100,000 people watch or take part in fox hunting. But over the last couple of decades the number of people against fox hunting, because they think it is cruel, has risen sharply. Nowadays it is rare for a hunt to take place without some kind of conflict between hunters and hunt saboteurs (阻拦者). Sometimes these incidents lead to violence, but mostly saboteurs interfere with the hunt by misleading riders and disturbing the trail of the fox’s smell, which the dogs follow.

Noisy conflicts between hunters and saboteurs have become so common that they are almost as much a part of hunting as the pursuit of foxes itself. But this year supporters of fox hunting face a bigger threat to their sport. A Labour Party Member of the Parliament, Mike Foster, is trying to get Parliament to pass a new law which will make the hunting of wild animals with dogs illegal. If the law is passed, wild animals like foxes will be protected under the ban in Britain.

If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become a master since you stated to learn a language?

According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.

The study also found the effect is greater, the younger people learn a second language.

A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons (土著的英国人)who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of "early bilinguals" who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.

Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference is.

"Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language," said the scientists.

It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.

Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. "Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible,"he said. "You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas."

The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and 34. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. "Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world," explained the scientists.
