According to a news report, a certain private school in Victoria, recently was faced with a problem.
A number of Grade 12 girls were beginning to use lipstick (口红) and put it on in the bathroom. That was fine, but after they put it on, they put their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints. Every night, the dustman would remove them and the next day, the girls would put them back.
Finally, the principal (校长) decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the dustman. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for him who had to clean the mirror every night. To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirror, she asked the dustman to show the girls how much effort was required.
He took out a long-handled squeegee(橡皮拖把), dipped it in the toilet(厕所,马桶), and cleaned the mirror with it.
After that, there weren’t lip prints left on the mirror any more.

Welcome to your future life!
You get up in the morning and look into the mirror. Your face is firm and young-looking. In 2035, medical technology is better than ever. Many people your age could live to be 150, so at 40, you’re not old at all. And your parents just had an anti-aging(抗衰老的) treatment. Now, all three of you look the same age!

So will all these things come true? “For new technology to succeed,” says scientist Andrew Zolli , “it has to be so much better that it replaces what we have already.” The Internet is one example --what will be the next?

Dating sites also make 46 easy to avoid someone 47 you are not interested in. In the real world, 48 , ignoring someone you don’t like can be difficult.

In a Station of the Metro
The apparition of these faces in the crowd;
Petals on a wet, black bough.
This is the only Ezra Pound poem that many people will read in their lives. Why? One obvious reason is that it’s just two lines long. The poem, which can be understood as “A man sees a bunch of faces in the subway and thinks they look like flowers on a tree branch,” is an exercise in shortness. Pound wrote it after having a spiritual experience in a Paris metro (subway) station.
In 1916, the US poet originally thought he could best desc
ribe his vision in a painting. Unfortunately, he wasn’t a painter. So he wrote a
thirty-line poem, which he didn’t like. He dropped the long version in the waste bin. Six months later, he wrote a shorter poem, but didn’t like that one either. Finally, a full year after the experience, he had been reading short Japanese poems called haikus, and he figured he would try this style. The result, which was published in 1913, is one of the most famous and influential works in modern poetry.
This poem is one of the monuments (纪念物) of the 20th-cen
tury artistic movement known as “Imagism”. Basically, Pound and his friends thought that images (意象) weren’t just decoration: they were the highest form of speech. By finding the right image, the poet can express the true, spiritual reality of a thing, which is more important than using a bunch of adjectives to describe its physical appearance. Thus, “In a Station of the Metro” is a poem that consists of one image expressed with absolute (绝对的) exactness and nothing else.
To the imagists, the best way to describe an experience is not to use more and more words; the best way is to find exactly the right words. Have you ever told a beloved one that “words can’t express” how much you love them? Well, Pound would say that you’re just being lazy. In his view, words can express anything, even if it takes an entire year to find the right ones.

The English writer Samuel Johnson famously said, “You find no man who is willing to leave London. No, sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life, for there is in London all that life can afford.” More than two centuries have passed since Johnson’s age, but his words still ring true. Here, you’ll find the historic Tower of London and the Tate Modern both considered must-sees. Shakespeare’s sonnets(十四行诗) are still being uttered by actors. Londoners most certainly still look up to the royals, but they also rock out to Coldplay and Lily Allen. And while they still sip tea, they now drink Starbucks, too.
How to Save Money in London
Find the free attractions. Many of London’s top things to do, including the National Gallery, Hyde Park and the Portobello Road Market, are absolutely free to enjoy.
Ride the Tube. Taking taxis will add up quickly, so buy a pay-as-you-go Oyster Card and travel on London’s underground system, nicknamed the “Tube”.
Dine smart. Corridors like Brick Lane offer fantastic cultural food for bargain prices; fish and chip shops are a cheap standby and takeaway food costs less than dine-in.
London Culture & Customs
London is one of the fashion capitals of the world, and its residents tend to reflect that. Practically, pack an umbrella for the rainy days and a scarf for the cold ones. As for tipping, restaurants and cafes will usually add a 10-to-15-percent service charge to the bill. If a service charge is not allotted(指定), it’s customary to tip the same (between 10 and 15 percent). If you’re drinking at a pub or wine bar, tipping is flexible. And in a taxicab, tip the driver to the nearest pound or about 10 percent of the cost.
London Dining
London used to be highly criticized for its heavy and common menu items. Now, London is considered as one of the most gourmet cities in the world. And with its melting pot of cultures, it’s not difficult to see why. London offers everything from modern British to Malaysian. For Indian food, we suggest visiting the curry houses on Brick Lane. If you want a real high tea experience, book reservations at the Ritz, at Fortnum & Mason, or at the Dorchester — but be sure to dress the part. Pub culture is still alive and well, so if you have a hankering for fried fish and salty chips (or French fries), you’ll still find them here. And for a quick bite, exchange a few pounds for a kebab, a quick sandwich or some to go sushi, which can be found in restaurants throughout the city.
5. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Life in London is exciting but tiring.
B. Londoners are traditional and fashion conscious.
C. Many well-known writers like to live in London.
D. Coffee is more popular with Londoners than tea.
6. The underlined word “hankering” in the last paragraph can be replaced by “________”.
A. desire B. respect C. preparation D. talent
7. In which column of a newspaper can we find the passage?
A. Culture. B. Travel. C. Education. D. Entertainment.

Top Ways to Spend the Holiday Season with Pets
Taking a nap is a great way to refresh during the holidays, and a nap with your dog or cat (or both) is an excellent bonding opportunity.
Holiday time is here. The decorating, the shopping, the cooking, the cleaning, the wrapping... 16 In the season’s craziness, our furry family members tend to get ignored or over-stimulated (过度刺激的). 17 But they don’t have to: be sure to pay attention and give them a break from the activity when they need it and add them to the fun when they don’t.
● Rest time.
If your pet seems stressed, have a safe place for him away from activity. Cats should have a quiet, cozy spot to sleep with food, water, and their litter box. 18 Be sure to have a soft area for sleep, a toy or two, water, and some food. But you might need a nap, too, to refresh for holiday festivities. So use this time to take one together.
● 19
Many Christmas tree farms welcome pets on a leash (皮带). Your pet will just love being with you outdoors while you share one of the season’s most honored traditions—picking out the perfect tree. Just be sure to call the farm first to confirm that pets are welcome... and you have a new annual tradition.
● Go have a catch.
Give your pup a good run and wear him out ahead of when company visits. 20 This way, he’ll be happy and relaxed when greeting guests. Dog parks are ideal as pups can run, chase tennis balls, and socialize with others. Always remember to walk to and from the park with your pup on a leash and poop bags in hand.
A. Keep pets on a leash.
B. Dogs love playing catch.
C. Dogs might also need one.
D. But where do our pets fit in?
E. Pick out the family Christmas tree.
F. As a result, pets can experience restlessness and anxiety.
G. Many pets would love to be included in some of the activities.
Question: I have been learning English for about 7 years. 16 And I still can’t make myself understood in English. However, I love learning English. How can I learn English well? Please help me.
Answer: Many people have asked me this question. 17 Here I will give you several tips for learning English.
● 18
First of all, you must want to learn. If you are not interested in learning English, no class will help you and no book will help you. So you have to be honest with yourself. Ask yourself, “Do I really want to learn English?” If you can’t answer “yes” to this question, it is better for you to set English aside until you’re ready and willing to learn.
● Set goals (目标).
To learn English well, you must set some goals. 19 It will also help you to see your progress. Ask yourself, “What are my goals? What areas would I like to improve?” Think about what your goals are, and review once in a while to see that you are making progress toward your goals.
● Practice, practice, and practice.
After you have set your goals, you have a better idea of what you need to practice. Just like the athlete whose goal is the Olympics must train daily, you as a language learner must practice language every day to make progress toward your goal. 20
A. Want to learn.
B. I think it is not easy to learn it well.
C. Make friends with some Americans online.
D. Reading is a very good way to learn new words.
E. The answers are as different as the people asking the question.
F. The more you practice, the more progress you will make.
G. Having goals will help you remember what areas you want to work on.

Five Things Ambitious People Never Say
1.“I can’t do this—it’s too hard.”
Ambitious people never limit themselves or undervalue hard work with these words. _______36________
2.“I’m not good enough.”
Ambitious people never say they are not good enough. Saying you are not good enough holds you back and makes you vulnerable to quit when things get a little rough. And quitting when things get a little rough is never a good thing. The most successful people in the world are not quitters. _______37________Be confident and believe in yourself, or no one else will.
3. “I won’t make it through the obstacles.”
Challenges and obstacles are tests of your resolve and desire to succeed. _______38________They say they will make it because they know better things lie ahead—the sun always shines after the storm.
4. _______39________
The only time people won’t take you seriously is if you don’t take yourself seriously. Insisting that people won’t take you seriously is an excuse not to do what you know you should do. Ambitious people never say these words. They respect themselves and honor their work and that earns people’s respect. Start respecting yourself and honoring what you do and people will respect and take you seriously.
5. “I’m going to fail for sure.”
_______40________It can teach you valuable lessons and redirect you to the right path. Ambitious people don’t say they are going to fail and let that stop them from trying. They defy the fear of failure by taking calculated risks because they know the only time you are truly defeated is when you don’t try at all. A few countries, including Australia, Great Britain, Spain and Israel, have recognized the damage
that cell phone use can Cause. According to Tom Alex of The Des Moines Register, people who talk on cell phones while driving are just as dangerous as drunk drivers. One Small distraction (分心的事物) could trigger a deadly mistake, causing them to hurt themselves or someone else.
Some may argue that cell phones are helpful when you have an emergency situation. Although I agree, I believe the safest way to use your phone is to pull over to the side of the road first. Some may argue that hands-flee phones are less of a distraction, but studies have. shown that the risk of having an accident remains the same even with these.
Using a cell phone while driving should be outlawed. One small mistake could change your
whole life. Please don't let that happen -- stay off your cell phone while driving.
