Alexandra Scott was born to Liz and Jay Scott in Manchester, Connecticut on January 18, 1996, the second of four children. Shortly before her first birthday, Alex was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a type of childhood cancer.
On her first birthday, the doctors informed Alex’s parents that if she beat her cancer it was doubtful that she would ever walk again. Just two weeks later, Alex slightly moved her leg at her parents’ request to kick. This was the first indication that she would turn out to be a courageous and confident child with big dreams and big accomplishments.
By her second birthday, Alex was able to stand up with leg braces (支架).She worked hard to gain strength and to learn how to walk. She appeared to be overcoming the difficul-ties, until the shocking discovery within the next year that her tumors (肿瘤)had started growing again. In the year 2000, the day after her fourth birthday, Alex received a stem cell transplant (干细胞移植)and informed her mother, “When I get out of the hospital I want to have a lemonade stand.” She said she wanted to give the money to doctors to allow them to “help other kids, like they helped me.,,True to her word, she held her first lemonade stand later that year with the help of her older brother and raised an amazing $ 2,000 for “her hos-pital,”
People from all over the world, moved by her story, held their own lemonade stands and donated the earnings to Alex and her cause. In August of 2004, Alex passed away at the age of 8, knowing that, with the help of others, she had raised more than $ 1 million to help find a cure for the disease that took her life. Alex’s family—including brothers Patrick, Eddie, and Joey—and supporters around the world are committed to continuing her inspiring cause through Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (基金会).

A walk in a farmers’ market often brings one to explore new food options, and now more locally-farmed protein (蛋白质) choices are available to help bridge the gap between our meals and the farms on which they grew. More and more local small farms are popping up in opposition to factory farms.
Today’s commercial farms do not fit the image that comes to mind while happily singing along to “Old McDonald.” Instead, most of the nation’s food comes from CAFOs – Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations – where animals are kept in tightly enclosed conditions as they are fattened up and readied to be killed for food.
Fortunately, knowing exactly where one’s food comes from has led to an increase in the availability of what is known as “grass-fed” beef. Technically, all cattle are grass-fed for at least a limited amount of time, but what makes the meat significant is that it is grass-finished, not force-fed corn, soy or grains. This change in diet makes all the difference since corn is not part of the cow’s traditional diet, and therefore causes major health issues for it. To deal with the health issues, antibiotics (抗生素) are used and some of the antibiotics used to treat the cattle are similar to those given to humans, so they can decrease the effectiveness of medicine when a consumer is sick.
A healthier diet for the cattle leads the meat to lower in both fat and calories. And when cooking grass-fed beef, you’d better use a slightly lower temperature to make it more delicious.
24. The underlined words popping up ( 1st Para.) probably means .
A. improving B. appearing C. profiting D. fading

A. some cattle feed on grains
B. all cattle eat grass
C. some antibiotics are used by both cattle and people
D. some medicines are used to treat sick cattle
27. We can infer from the text that .
A. food from local farms can help add to the variety in our daily meals
B. soy or grains are on the list of traditional diets of the cattle
C. corn for the cattle leads the meat to lower in both fat and calories
D. low temperature makes grass-fed beef more delicious

It is 7 am and the alarm is going off. You know you have to be out of bed to catch the bus. But the urge to bury yourself in the bed is ever so strong. Sounds familiar? Why is it that teens find it difficult to get themselves out of bed in time every morning or stay sharp and focused during the first couple of hours of school?
During adolescence, the body goes through many changes and these include a shift in sleep patterns. Researchers from MIT have been tracking the body’s need for sleep in teenagers. They found that though adolescents need as much as 9.5 hours of sleep a day, they get to bed later and later with each passing year. In fact, the sleep cycle shifts later by as much as 12 to 18 minutes each year between the ages of 10 and 20! So by the time a 10yearold who sleeps at 8 pm grows to be 17 or 18, his body naturally wants to stay up till 10:30 pm or 11 pm.
According to researchers, this is because of a hormone called melatonin (褪黑激素) that is secreted (分泌) by the pineal gland — a tiny structure deep inside the brain. Melatonin regulates the body’s natural daynight rhythms. It causes a person to become sleepy by lowering his body’s core temperature. In teens, melatonin is secreted much later in the evening and continues to increase throughout the night. This makes it difficult for teens to fall asleep earlier as they did in their younger years. Likewise, the effect of melatonin continues until much later in the morning, making it hard for them to wake up early.
A study found that at least one in four teens is tired and falls asleep in school at least once a week. During sleep, important body functions and brain activities happen. So how can teenagers get their sleep enough? The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that middle and high schools should start later — not before 8:30 am. This should give teens some more time to sleep at night.

Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. That is why some friendships don’t last very long. To have a friend, you must learn to trea
t your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous (宽宏大量的);be understanding.
Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you don’t tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven’t been honest, you may lose your friend’s trust. Good friends always count on one another to speak and act honestly.
Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You don’t have to give your lunch money or your clothes, or enjoy, like our hobbies and your interests. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them you help your friend know you better.
Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Someth
ing may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve . Turning to a friend can be a first step in sol
ving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend’s place so you c
an understand the problem better.
No two friendships are ever exactly alike (相同). But all true friendships have three things in commo

Make yourself take part in various activities and at the same time try to stand out in your studies. When you move out to college these efforts that you put in may count for a lot.

The problem of global warming has caused a lot of people to try their best to protect the environment. Unluckily, there are still many people who think it is hard to go green. In fact, it is very easy to be green in our daily life.
You can make a great start by learning to recycle. While this looks really simple, there are many people who still throw glass bottles into their common garbage. Almost all cities offer a recycling bin (垃圾箱) for these items. If you put them in the recycling bin instead of throwing them away, you will be on the path to save the earth.
One good thing to recycle is newspaper. But there are still some people who just put their newspaper in the garbage when they finish reading it. As we know, there are many other things we can do with an old newspaper. For example, we can use it to clean our windows.
Another thing that could help you to start to live green is to begin walking a bit more. Many people think nothing of getting in their car and driving one mile to get drinks at the local store. If you walk to the store, not only can it take less time, because you won’t have to try to find a parking place, but you will be saving money on gas and helping to protect the environment. If you wish to save even more on gas, take the opportunity to car pool (拼车) each time you can, which has become popular in many countries.
There really are many means by which people can start living green. You only have to make some changes in their lifestyle to improve our environment.

There lived in South Carolina a young woman named Eliza Lucas. Her father was governor of one of the islands of the West Indies. Miss Lucas often got seeds (种子) from her father, and then she planted them in South Carolina.

These grew very well until a cutworm found them and ate her plants. Once more Miss Lucas planted some of the seeds. This time the plants grew very well. She wrote to her father about it. He sent her a man who knew how to get the indigo out of the plant.
However, the man tried not to show Miss Lucas how to make the indigo. He did not want the people in the South Carolina to learn how to make. He was afraid his own people would not get so much money for their indigo if other people made it as well. So he destroyed the indigo on purpose. But Miss Lucas watched him closely. She worked out how the indigo could be made. Some of her father’s land in South Carolina was now planted with indigo plant.
Then Miss Lucas got married, and became Mrs. Pinckney. Her father gave her all the indigo growing on his land in South Carolina. It was all saved for seed. Some of the seed Mrs. Pinckney gave to her friends. Some of it her husband sowed (播种). It all grew and was made into that blue dye (染料) that we call indigo. Telepathy (心灵感应) is the ability to communicate without the use of the five senses. It's an instinct (本能) which can be woken up in times of emergency or need. When we feel that something is happening or about to happen by instinct,we're using resources within the unconscious (潜意识的) mind. When the resources of two persons' unconscious minds link together into the same frequency (频率),we call it telepathy.
We can either send or receive telepathy. If you know who is calling before you answer the ringing phone, you are probably a good receiver. If you think of a person and he/she calls you,you are most likely to be better at sending.
You can easily put your ability to the test. Thinking of somebody and wish him or her to contact you. Be patient. The other person may not be a good receiver, but they should contact you much earlier than would normally be expected. Or whenever the phone rings, try ‘feeling’ who is contacting you. Don't guess, but try to feel it with your mind. However,if neither of these works for you, that doesn't mean that you have no ability of telepathy. As mentioned earlier, telepathy is most likely to turn up in case of emergency.
Telepathy dreams often contain telepathic messages. Two people may both dream of the other and find that their dreams have a clear connection. These people are probably linking to each other's unconscious mind.
Telepathy & relationship. The more people spend time together, the more likely they are to be able to link up to the other's mind, especially
when separated. There are two reasons for this. One is that they understand the other's mind through time spent together;the other is that there is usually a strong desire to communicate. A mother will often sense that her child is in danger. This is due to the child's eag
erly wanting his or her mother, knowing that this is the person who wou
ld always want to be there for them, and the mother's deep desire to protect her child from harm.
