I once bought the beautiful bracelet from a store and felt excited when I tried it on. Sadly, I was soon disappointed at that my naughty kids broke it. But instead of just feel sad, I chose to repair it myself.

To my greatly surprise, it didn’t take a long time to do it. As time went by, I found that I was not happy with just repairing my breaking bracelets. I started making new bracelets out the materials from my old one. Later on, I begin to design on my own.

The I made my first deal. Back in 2013, I posted my bracelets on WeChat for the first time and several friends said that they wanted it. That was just the start. With many materials at hand, I made my designs into real.

The arts, especially music, should be part of every school's lessons at every grade level. Students would be much smarter if they had some musical experience. They could improve their classroom skills, like paying attention and following directions. People develop all these skills when they learn music. Making music also lets children use their imagination. It provides students with a chance to try out their own ideas.

Music not only makes children better students, but also gives them something positive to do. In a music program, children can be part of a band instead of joining a gang (团伙). Parents can enjoy listening to their children's music instead of seeing them glued to a computer or TV screen. In a school band, students get to be part of a team. They can get along well with old friends and make new friends through music.

Music builds self-confidence, too. It gives children a sense of achievement and success. Making music is something for them to be proud of, and it lets kids practice performing in front of an audience. Music gives children an opportunity for self-expression, and that helps develop their self-confidence.

Once again, music is important because it can make children better students, give them something positive to do, and build their character. That is why music should be offered in every single grade in every school.

Pilar Fernandez, 101

She lives with her daughter Pili, granddaughters Flori and Ana in Ambas, Asturias, northern Spain. Fernandez suffered hunger and hardship during the war years alongside her nine brothers and sisters. A new drug can prevent heart attacks and strokes by cutting bad cholesterol(胆固醇) to levels never known before, say doctors.

The results of the large international trial on 27,000 patients mean the drug could soon be used by millions. The British Heart Foundation said the findings were a significant advance in fighting the

biggest killer in the world.

Around 15 million people die each year from heart attacks or stroke. Bad cholesterol is the bad character in the heart world - it leads to blood vessels furring up, becoming easy to block which fatally starves the heart or brain of oxygen.

It is why millions of people take drugs called statins to reduce the amount of bad cholesterol.

The new drug - evolocumab - changes the way the liver works to also cut bad cholesterol.

"It is much more effective than statins," said Prof Peter Sever, from Imperial College London.

He organized the bit of the trial taking place in the UK with funding from the drug company Amgen.

Prof Sever told the BBC News website: "The end result was cholesterol levels came down and down and down and we've seen cholesterol levels lower than we have ever seen before in the practice of medicine."

The patients in the trial were already taking statins and yet their risk was cut further by the new treatment.

Prof Sever added: "They would have another 20% reduction in risk and that is a big effect. It is probably the most important trial result of a cholesterol lowering drug in over 20 years."

The findings were published in the New England Journal of Medicine and also reported at a meeting of the American College of Cardiology.

The study showed that one heart attack or stroke was prevented for every 74 patients taking the drug in the two-year trial. It is too soon to know if the drug is saving lives.

28. According to the British Heart Foundation, ____________.

A. millions of people take drugs called statins to change the way the liver works

B. the new drug is no better than statins

C. the trial has been done and it has shown the new drug is better

D. bad cholesterol can be got rid of completely by the new drug

29. What Prof Sever told the BBC News website means _________.

A. he is satisfied with the result

B. we have to deal with many new problems

C. a new development will appear in the practice of medicine

D. we will continue to do the trial to the end

30. What does the underlined word “fatally” in the third paragraph mean?

A. ending in surprise   B. ending in fear     C. ending in delight  D. ending in death

31. Which of the following is true about the passage?

A. The new drug has been used by millions.

B. We can’t tell whether the new drug can save lives now.

C. The higher cholesterol levels are, the stronger the heart is.

D. The new drug can starve the heart or brain of oxygen.

The terrible earthquake struck the southwest of the country last week,        6 deaths and hundreds of injuries.

Once you get _______ something, it is very hard to ________.

   A. addicted to; rid yourself of it    B. used to; rid yourself of it

   C. accustomed to; be got rid of it   D. addicted to; get away with it

Once when I was facing a decision that involved high risk, I went to a friend. He looked at me for a moment, and then wrote a sentence containing the best advice I’ve ever had: Be bold and brave — and mighty (强大的) forces will come to your aid.

Those words made me see clearly that when I had fallen short in the past, it was seldom because I had tried and failed. It was usually because I had let fear of failure stop me from trying at all. On the other hand, whenever I had plunged into deep water, forced by courage or circumstance, I had always been able to swim until I got my feet on the ground again.

Boldness means a decision to bite off more than you can eat. And there is nothing mysterious about the mighty forces. They are potential powers we possess: energy, skill, sound judgment, creative ideas — even physical strength greater than most of us realize.

Admittedly, those mighty forces are spiritual ones. But they are more important than physical ones. A college classmate of mine, Tim, was an excellent football player, even though he weighed much less than the average player. “In one game I suddenly found myself confronting a huge player, who had nothing but me between him and our goal line,” said Tim. “I was so frightened that I closed my eyes and desperately threw myself at that guy like a bullet — and stopped him cold.”

Boldness — a willingness to extend yourself to the extreme—is not one that can be acquired overnight. But it can be taught to children and developed in adults. Confidence builds up. Surely, there will be setbacks (挫折) and disappointments in life; boldness in itself is no guarantee of success. But the person who tries to do something and fails is a lot better off than the person who tries to do nothing and succeeds.

So, always try to live a little bit beyond your abilities—and you’ll find your abilities are greater than you ever dreamed.

25. Why was the author sometimes unable to reach his goal in the past?

A. He faced huge risks.

B. He lacked mighty forces.

C. Fear prevented him from trying.

D. Failure blocked his way to success.

26. What was especially important for Tim’s successful defense in the football game?

A. His physical strength.                                B. His basic skill.

C. His real fear.                                          D. His spiritual force.

27. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?

A. To encourage people to be courageous.

B. To advise people to build up physical power.

C. To tell people the ways to guarantee success.

D. To recommend people to develop more abilities.

There is no doubt that it is around the family and the home         all the greatest virtues of human society are created, strengthened, and maintained.

THIS is an excerpt(摘录)from therapist Laura Trice’s speech at TED in 2008:

Hi. I'm here to talk to you about the importance of praise, admiration and “thank you”s, and making them specific and genuine.

The way I got interested in this was, I noticed that when I was growing up, and until about a few years ago, I would want to say thank you to someone. I would want to praise them. I would want to take in their praise of me and then I'd just stop myself. I asked myself: why? I felt shy. I felt embarrassed. And then my question became: am I the only one who does this? So I decided to study that question.

I'm fortunate enough to work in a rehab facility, so I get to see people who are facing life and death with addiction. Sometimes it comes down to something as simple as their core wound is how their father died without ever saying he's proud of them. But then, they hear from all the family and friends that the father told everybody else that he was proud, but he never told the son. It's because he didn't know that his son needed to hear it.

I used to take my bike into the bike store and they'd do something called "truing(校正)" the wheels. The guy said: "You know, when you true the wheels, it's going to make the bike so much better." I get the same bike back, and they'd have taken all the little warps out of those same wheels I've had for two and a half years, and my bike would feel like new. So, I'm going to challenge all of you. I want you to true your wheels: be honest about the praise that you need to hear. What do you need to hear? Go home to your wife and ask her: “What do you need?” Go home to your husband and ask him what he needs. Go home and ask those questions and then help the people around you.

It's simple. But why should  we care about this? We talk about world peace. How can we have world peace with different cultures, different languages? I think it starts in each of our households. So, let's make things right in our own backyards.

61.  Why did Laura mention truing the wheels of her bike in the speech?

A.        To thank the staff of the bike shop.

B.        To show the importance of praise and admiration.

C.        To advise readers to get their bike wheels trued, too.

D.       To remind readers to renew their relationships with the people around them.

62.  The purpose of the speech is most likely to ___________.

A.    surprise                 B.    persuade                C.    describe                D.    entertain

A happy family life doesn’t happen by chance. It is a result from husband and wife who carefully and diligently create a home where there is love, respect, forgiveness, patience, service and selflessness.

36   The love of husband and wife makes their union last forever; the love of parents for children enables them to feel safe in the world; the love of children for parents lightens the burden that the parents bear; and the love among children reduces quarrels and fights.

A couple who respect each other never blame their spouse(配偶). He or she doesn’t think much about her or his weaknesses but helps her or him overcome them.   37

Forgiveness cannot be ignored either. Conflicts often arise in a family but they can be settled right away. The one who is at fault should immediately ask for forgiveness and the other should choose to forgive.   38

39   If there is patience in the family, anger will be controlled and there will be peace and harmony.

40   Small acts of service in a family make people’s hearts glad. Children learn simple acts of service by giving their parents a glass of water, and a couple serve each other by taking care of family members.

       A. Live in harmony.

       B. Love is the greatest of all virtues.

       C. If there is respect, there will be encouraging words.

       D. If there is forgiveness, there will be no anger or misunderstanding.

       E. Being patient is difficult, especially for parents with babies or teenagers.

       F. If you do something wrong, you must make an apology.

       G. The best service is always found within the walls of homes.

The city of Rome has passed a new law to prevent cruelty to animals. All goldfish bowls are no longer allowed and dog owners must walk their dogs.
This comes after a national law was passed to give prison sentences to people who desert cats or dogs.
“The civilization of a city can be measured by this,” said Monica Carina, the councilor (
议员) behind the new law.
“It’s good to do whatever we can for our animals who in exchange for a little love fill our existence with their attention,” she told a Rome newspaper.
The newspaper reported that round bowls don’t give enough oxygen for fish and may make them go blind.
“Rome has tried to protect fish more than anywhere else in the world .It stands out for recognizing that fish are interesting animals who deserve over respect and compassion every bit as much as dogs and cats and other animals,” said Karin Robertson, a director of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
Last year a law was passed in Italy that gives people who desert pets big fines
(罚款)and prison sentences. Since then local governments have added their own animal protection rules.
The northern city of Turin passed a law in April to give pet owners fines of up to
598 if they do not walk their dogs three times a day.
The new law in Rome also says that owners mustn’t leave their dogs in hot cars or cut their dogs’ tails to make them look lovelies. The law also gives legal recognition to the “cat ladies” who feed homeless cats. The cats live all over the city from ancient ruins to modern office car parks.
1. The new law passed in Rome will _____
  A. help improve fishing environment               B. guarantee better conditions for goldfish
  C. stop people from catching goldfish         D. discourage keeping goldfish at home
2. The underlined word “compassion” in Paragraph 6 is the closest in meaning to ____
  A. pity           B.praise            C.support           D.popularity

Popeye the Sailor first became a popular cartoon in the 1930s.The sailor in that cartoon ate lots of spinach to make him strong. People watched him, and they began to buy and eat a lot more spinach. Popeye helped sell 33 percent more spinach than before! Spinach became a necessary part of many people’s diets. Even some children who hated the taste began to eat the vegetable.

Many people thought that the iron in spinach made Popeye strong, but this is not true. Spinach does not have any more iron than any other green vegetable.

People only thought spinach had a lot of iron because the people who studied the food made a mistake. In the 1890s, a group of people studied what was inside vegetables. This group said that spinach had ten times more iron than it did. The group wrote the number wrong, and everyone accepted it.

Today, we know that the little iron there is in spinach cannot make a difference in how strong a person is. However, spinach does have something else which the body needs—folic acid.

It is interesting to point out that folic acid can help make a person strong. Maybe it was really the folic acid that made Popeye strong all along.

As for old peoplesome of the applications are hard to use because they didn't grow up with them. They don't have simple models of how they should workwhat to do when something doesn't work or where to go for help. We make it as easy as possible to be used for people who are not familiar with the technology.

I think there is huge potential(潜力) and we are designing it. The ability to connect to friendswho remember the same movies and news and musicis really importantespecially as people get old. They end up in retirement homes and they aren't always close to their friends. Allowing the network to help them connect with friends and family is a really powerful thing.

My mother is an enthusiastic user of the Internetalthough it took me years to get her to use email. She was born with normal hearingbut lost it when she was 3.She was totally deaf for many yearsuntil age 53when she got ear aids. They work really well. That is a big change for her. But before thenher friends couldn't call her on the phoneso they insisted (坚持) she use e-mail to communicate with them.

Young people don't even think of the Internet as technology. It’s just thereand they use it. There’s been a very interesting change in communications styles between old people and young people. There are some kids who are now in their teens and aren't willing to make phone calls. And they think of e-mail as old-fashioned and slow.

The reason why teens don't make phone calls seems to be that they don’t know what to say. When they call they often stop for a while. They don't know what to sayand there's this silence. On the other handtexting is considered properand it's okay if you don't answer. You might have been distracted (心烦意乱的)It's not considered rude. But it is considered strange if you're in this kind of voice conversation and simply stop talking.

28. What is the trouble that old people meet when surfing the Internet?

    A. They don’t know how to use some applications.

    B. They have to buy electronic productions at a high price.

    C. There is no professional teacher to teach them how to use the Internet.

    D. They have no friends to communicate with online.

29. We can infer from the passage that the author is a ________

    A. company manager               B. program designer

    C. college professor                D. mobile phone designer

30. What do the young people think of the Internet according to the passage?

    A. Interesting.  B. Amazing.     C. Boring.  D. Common.

31. Which of the following statements is true?

A. Teens face challenges when taking phone calls with the old.

   B. The author's mother is still using e-mail to communicate with others after

getting ear aids.

C. Teens like to send texts to communicate with others in order to avoid

embarrassment.

D. Most people consider e-mail as the most old-fashioned tool to communicate

with others.

Nowadays it is found that school students seldom pay much attention to sports. Is it because they have no   21    in sports? It may not be the fact. They often say they have    22    more important things to do.

Selfie

Social media and the mobile web have given rise to a strange phenomenon called the selfie(自拍). It refers to a picture of yourself, usually shared on any social networking website.

41     Some selfies are extreme close-ups(特写镜头), and others show part of an arm held straight outward. A few of them even feature the subject standing in front of a bathroom mirror.

Everyone takes selfies, but the younger crowd seems to be especially involved in the trend. Young people are relatively heavier digital users. They are interested in staying connected to their friends.                     42

There are also kinds of psychological factors driving people to take a selfie and upload it to a social networking site.      43      A quick and easy way to attract other's attention is to get "likes" and comments from friends. Secondly, it's human nature to show off your own great achievements. When you feel good about yourself or look good, it's far too easy to take out your phone and document it all through one or several selfies.      44      That's right. Sometimes people are bored at work, bored at school, bored at home and even bored on the toilet. Last but not least, social media is about being social! If that means uploading as many selfies as possible, then so be it. It's fun, and it's a cool way to sort of document your own life.

Finally, there are things to be mindful of when you're posting. It's easy to think you're sharing a photo with a few people.      45      So don't post anything online, selfie especially.

A. There are lots of selfie styles.

B. The rise of selfies has become universal.

C. Social media, to some extent, is the driving force of their selfie activity.

D. The desire to take, post and get "likes" on selfies goes back to a biological behavior.

E. But the whole world of social media is public and every individual can get access to it.

F. There are also people who will take selfies because they have nothing else better to do.

G. The leading factor is that people want to get attention from as many people as possible.
