We Chinese are not big huggers. A handshake or a pat on the shoulder is enough to convey our friendship or affection to one another. So when our newly-acquainted Western friends reach out in preparation for a hug, some of us feel awkward.

Many questions go through our head. Where should I put my arms? Under their armpits (胳肢窝) or around their neck? What distance should I maintain? Should our chests touch?

It’s even more difficult with friends from some European countries. Should I kiss them on the cheek while hugging? Which side? Or is it both cheeks? Which side should I start on?

But it isn’t just people from cultures that emphasize a reservedness in expressing physical intimacy(亲密) who find hugging confusing. Hugs can cause discomfort or even distress in people who value their personal space.

In a recent article for The Wall Street Journal, US psychologist Peggy Drexler said that although the US remains a “medium touch” culture — “more physically demonstrative(公开表露感情的) than Japan, where a bow is the all-purpose hello and goodbye, but less demonstrative than Latin or Eastern European cultures, where hugs are strong and can include a kiss on both cheeks”, Americans do seem to be hugging more.

From politicians to celebrities, hugs are given willy-nilly (不管愿意不愿意的)to friends, strangers and enemies alike; and the public has been quick to pick up the practice. US First Lady Michelle Obama has put her arms around icy foreign leaders like Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and the Queen of England, on the latter occasion actually breaking the rule of royal manners.

But not all are grateful to be hugged, even by the most influential and famous. To them, any hug is offensive if it’s not sincere.

Amanda Hess, writing for US magazine Slate, says public figures should stop imposing hugs on everyone they meet. For them, a hug is rarely a gesture of sincere fellowship, compassion or affection. It’s all part of a show. Hugs are falsely close power plays used by public figures to establish their social dominance (统治力)over those in their grasp.

Cecilia Walden, a British journalist writing for The Telegraph who lives in New York, holds the same opinion. “Power-hugging”, as she calls it, is “an offender dressed up as kindness”. It has become a fashion in the US where “bosses are already embracing their staff (either shortly before or after firing them), men and women ,their friends or enemies, in a thousand cheating displays of unity”.

8. From the first four paragraphs, we can see that ___________.

A. we Chinese people don’t know how to hug

B. people from European countries often get puzzled about hugging

D. hugs can bring pressure to people when used improperly

9. The example of US first lady Michelle Obama is given to show that __________.

A. Americans hold a “medium touch” culture

B. public figures know hugging functions well in public

C. she is much liked by American people

D. hugs are forbidden in England

10. “Power-hugging” in the last paragraph actually means that _________.

A. hugs are only used sincerely by some people with power

B. hugging is powerful to bosses in US

C. public figures sometimes use hugging just for a show of power

D. public figures can hug anyone in their grasp freely...

11. What can be the best title of this passage?

A. Hugs, vital or not?

Eating too much fatty food, exercising too little and smoking can raise your future risk of heart disease. But there is another factor that can cause your heart problems more immediately: the air you breathe.

Previous studies have linked high exposure (暴露)to environmental pollution to an increased risk of heart problem, but two analyses now show that poor air quality can lead to heart attack or stroke (中风)within as little as a few hours after exposure. In one review of the research, scientists found that people exposed to high levels of pollutants (污染物)were up to 5% more likely to suffer a heart attack within days of exposure than those with lower exposure. A separate study of stroke patients showed that even air that the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers to be of “moderate” (良好)quality and relatively safe for our health can raise the risk of stroke as much as 34% within 12 to 14 hours of exposure.

The authors of both studies stress that these risks are relatively small for healthy people and certainly modest compared with other risk factors such as smoking and high blood pressure. However, it is important to be aware of these dangers because everyone is exposed to air pollution regardless of lifestyle choices. So stricter regulation by the EPA of pollutants may not only improve environmental air quality but could also become necessary to protect public health.

1The text mainly discusses the relationship between ______ .

A.heart problems and air quality

B.heart problems and exercising

C.heart problems and smoking

D.heart problems and fatty food

2The underlined word “modest” in Paragraph 3 most probably means ______ .

A.relatively high

B.extremely low

C.relatively low

D.extremely high

3The author’s purpose of writing the text is most likely to _______.

A.describe

B.persuade

An abandoned car in Chicago worth about $600 has been issued more than $100,000 in parking tickets over the past three years. Now Jennifer Fitzgerald, 31, is stuck with the bill but says the 1999 Chevy Monte Carlo actually belongs to an ex-boyfriend who registered the car in her name without informing her.

The Expired Meter reports that from May 23, 2009 to April 30, 2012, the Chicago Department of Finance (DOF) issued 678 tickets against the car, totaling $105,761.80. It set a Chicago record both for the total number and amount of parking fines issued. In fact, it blew past the previous record holder, which was $65,000 from about 400 tickets.

But Fitzgerald says she doesn’t owe the city a cent and has filed a lawsuit (诉讼) in Cook County circuit Court against the city of Chicago, United Airlines and the ex-boyfriend. Fitzgerald has two main arguments in her case. First, she says her ex-boyfriend, Brandon Preveau, is the actual owner of the car, having purchased it from her uncle for $600 in 2008. In fact, Preveau paid for the car’s title, registration and insurance, but it was registered in Fitzgerald’s name. “ Brandon used his 2007 income tax refund to pay Patrick $600 for the automobile,” reads Fitzgerald’s complaint. “ For reasons not recalled by Patrick, however, Patrick signed the title to the car over to Jennifer.”

Second, Fitzgerald’s lawyer is arguing that the city should have simply towed the vehicle after 30 days from O’Hare Airport, where it was parked and where Preveau worked at the time. According to Fitzgerald’s complaint, on or before November 17, 2009, Brandon drove the car into the parking lot and never drove it out again. And as the Expired Meter reports, Chicago law does specify that an abandoned vehicle is to be towed 30 days after being illegally parked.

32. After the Chicago Department of Finance noticed the car, it ______.

A. wanted to break a record

B. tried its best to find its owner

C. kept issuing tickets against the car

D. decided to play a joke on its owner

33. From Paragraph 3, we know that Jennifer Fitzgerald ______.

A. sold the car to her ex-boyfriend long ago

B. received the car from her ex-boyfriend

C. didn’t know anything about the car

D. wasn’t the real owner of the car

34. Jennifer Fitzgerald filed a lawsuit against the city of Chicago because the city ______.

A. didn’t inform her immediately it found the missing car

B. didn’t’ tow the vehicle after 30 days from O’Hare Airport

C. didn’t specify that an abandoned vehicle was to be towed

D. didn’t help her find the car when it was missing in the beginning

35. After reading the passage we learn that Jennifer Fitzgerald ______.

A. doesn’t’ want to pay any money     B. thinks Patrick should pay the fines111]

C. isn’t trying to find her ex-boyfriend   D. has never been to O’Hare Airport

There is a popular saying in the English: “language: Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Well, that is not true. Unkind words, name-calling of even the so-called “the silent treatment” can hurt children as much as being physically hit sometimes even more so.
A recent study of middle school children showed that verbal (
言语的) abuse by other children can harm development in  the brain. The study was a project of researchers at Harvard Medical School in Massachusetts.Researcher

Martin Teicher and his team studied young adults, aged 18 to 25. These young men and women had not ever been treated in a cruel or violent way by their parents. The researchers asked the young people to rate their childhood exposure to verbal abuse from both parents and other children. Then the researchers performed imaging tests on the brains of the subjects.
The images showed that the people who reported suffering verbal abuse from peers in middle school had underdeveloped connections between the left and right side of the brain. The two sides of the brain are connected by a large bundle of connecting fibers called the corpus callosum. This was the area that was underdeveloped.
The middle school years are a time when these brain connections are developing. So, unkind, hurtful comments from children or adults during this period have the greatest effect. The researchers tested the mental and emotional condition of all the young people in the study. The tests showed that this same group of people had higher levels of fear, depression, anger and drug abuse than others in the study. The researchers published their findings online on the American Journal of Psychiatry’s website. Parents cannot control what other people say to their children, but they can prepare their children.

“Now stretch over your right leg!” my dance teacher yells over the music. “If it doesn't hurt, you're not trying hard enough. Hold that stretch for 30 seconds!" My dance teacher works hard to form us into the dancers we desire to be. In order for this to occur, we stretch hard a lot!

Dancing is a real passion of many people, including me. I work hard to make myself better, and prove that I am good enough. Performing a dance routine is more than just a performance. Dancers tell stories when they dance. It is a way for us to express our personal feelings. Just letting go and letting your body move with the music can create your emotions. Dance tells us things that our mind secretly hides.

“Get up and do it again!  You need to keep your spirits up!” Even though I am completely worn out after my dances, I love to hear those words. It gives me a sense of relief knowing that I can again express my feelings out on the floor.

“Practice makes perfect! Come on. We have a competition this weekend, and we need to work harder!” Competitions are the best possible example of fun. For a dancer, life cannot get better than competitions. The thrill of losing yourself onstage is a rush of energy rushing through your body! The feeling is unexplainable. As you sit there putting on your makeup, fixing your hair, and putting on your costume, the rush just gradually grows until it is ready to be released onstage.

Finally the time comes to tell your story. Standing backstage waiting for your name to be called is one of the scariest moments. You are ready to show the world what you are capable of and what you have been perfecting for a while. Once your number is called, you walk out onstage. The applause at the end tells each dancer that their story has been received, and that the dance has been brought to life.

24. What does the author's dance teacher require her to do during the dance class?

A. Build up her confidence.             B. Keep encouraged and cheerful.

C. Train her body to the fullest.          D. Understand the music.

25. How does the author understand dancing according to the text?

A. It is a good way to release stress.

B. It takes talent, confidence and patience to dance well.

C. It is no more than a performance with our bodies.

D. It is a way to show our personal emotions.

26. As far as the author is concerned, a dance competition means             .

A. an improvement in her life.            B. an opportunity to have fun.

C. a reflection of her perfect thoughts.      D. a way to experience the scariest moment.

27. What would be the best title for the text?

A. Bringing dance to life                 B. Training for competitions

C. Dancers' special feelings               D. Encouragement from my teacher

Travelers to new cities are often told to start their trip with a bus tour. It is said that they can then get a full view of the places that   41    them. Nonsense! What you see from the   42    of a moving bus is   43   and completely removed from the real sights, sounds, and    44    outside. Be adventurous! The best   45    to experience any place is on foot and with absolutely no travel plan.  46    go wherever your feet and your interests  47    you. You finally will get to the   48   sites as you are on the bus tour―the museums, the monuments, the city hall --- but you will have seen much more. You will have   49    the present life of the city.

“But what if I get lost?” people might ask. No one ever gets   50    lost in a major city.

At first, you can find your way back to a(n)   51   location. If it  52    you to be “lost”, just find a taxi and go back to where you started. However,  53    things can happen if you get lost. You can   54  at a sidewalk café to sit and relax. You can ask the local people at the next table about the directions. And   55    they don’t speak your language, your trip becomes more memorable because of the   56  . Here are a few more ways to get most out of your travel.

Know before you do.   57   a few hours before your trip learning about the history and culture of your destination. This will help you understand what you’re seeing.

Move around like a local. Use the subways and buses of the city you’re   58   . You’ll not only save money, but you’ll also learn how people really live.

Check the bulletin boards (布告牌). Sometimes you can find advertisements for free concerts and  59   fun activities on bulletin boards around universities.

In much of Asia, especially the so-called “rice bowl” cultures of China, Japan, Korea, ___46___Vietnam, food is usually eaten with chopsticks.

Chopsticks are usually two long, thin pieces of wood or bamboo. They can also be made of plastic, animal bone or metal. Sometimes chopsticks are quite artistic. Truly elegant chopsticks might ___47___ (make) of gold and silver with Chinese characters. Skilled workers also combine various hardwoods and metal ___48___ (create) special designs.

The Chinese have used chopsticks for five thousand years. People probably cooked their food in large pots, ___49___ (use) twigs(树枝)to remove it. Over time, ___50___ the population grew, people began cutting food into small pieces so it would cook more quickly. Food in small pieces could be eaten easily with twigs which ___51___(gradual) turned into chopsticks.

Some people think that the great Chinese scholar Confucius, ___52___ lived from roughly 551 to 479 B.C., influenced the ___53___ (develop) of chopsticks. Confucius believed knives would remind people of killings and ___54___ (be) too violent for use at the table.

This is a true story which happened in the States.   61   man came out of his home to admire his new truck. To his puzzlement, his three-year-old son was   62   (happy) hammering dents(凹痕) into the shiny paint of the truck. The man ran to his son, knocked him away, hammered the little boy's hands into pulp(果浆汁) as   63   (punish). When the father calmed down, he rushed his son to the hospital.

Although the doctor tried desperately to save the crushed bones, he finally had to cut the fingers from both the boy's hands. When the boy   64   (wake) up from the operation and saw his bandaged stubs, he innocently said, “Daddy, I'm sorry about your truck,   65    when are my fingers going to grow back?”

The father went home and committed suicide.

Think about this story the next time someone steps on your   66   (foot) or you wish to take revenge(报复). Think first   67   you lose your patience with someone you love. Trucks can be repaired, but   68  (break) bones and hurt feelings often can't. Too often we fail to recognize the difference between the person and the performance. We forget that forgiveness is   69  (great) than revenge.

People make mistakes. We   70   (allow) to make mistakes. But the actions we take while in a rage will impress us forever.

Before I left my hometown to come to study in England, I was partly terrified, and mostly I was excited. I was travelling all on my own to a place that I didn't know any person at all. I couldn't even say the language well, but I wasn't going to let that stop me. Within a few month after arriving in London, I fall in love with the city. I met some of the most amazing people from all over the world. I wasn't quite preparing for the culture shock of a different place at the beginning of. But after one and half years, I am accustomed to living there. Now I realize our views and ideas have changed completely in this country.

Sir Henry Stewart was certainly successful. I asked one day, soon after he’d retired to attend his garden, what it was like to have achieved all of one’s ambitions. He looked down at his roses, and went on watering them. Then he said, “The only value in achieving one’s ambitions is that you then realize that they are not worth achieving. ” Within a moment we were back to a safe discussion on the weather. That was two years ago.

I recall this incident, for yesterday, I was passing his house, and had drawn up my cart just outside his garden wall. I had pulled in from the road for no other reason than to let a bus pass me. As I set there filling my pipe, I suddenly heard a shout of sheer joy come from the other side of the wall.

I looked over. There stood Sir Henry doing nothing less than a dance of pure unashamed delight. Even when he observed my puzzled face staring over the wall he did not seem embarrassed, but shouted to me to climb over.

“Come and see, Jan. Look! I have done it at last! I have done it at last!”

There he was , holding a small box of earth in his hand. I observed three tiny shoots out of it.

“And there were only three!” he said, his eye laughing to heaven.

“Three what?” I asked.

“Peach stones”, he replied. “I’ve always wanted to make peach stones grow, ever since I was a child, when I used to take them home after a party, or as a man after a banquet. And I used to plant them, and forget where I planted them. But now at last I have done it , and , what’s more, I had only three stones, and there they are, one, two, three shoots,” he counted.

And Sir Henry ran off, calling for his wife to come and see his achievement—the achievement of simplicity.

21The main idea of this passage probably is

Agreat achievements can bring comfort        Breal joy comes from simple things

22What was Sir Henry’s attitude towards success?

ADelightful             BValuable           CWorthless         DSuffering

23What was the writer doing when he heard the shout of joy from Sir Henry?

APreparing to smoke.                      BRepairing the pipe

CDrawing up his cart                      DStaring at the garden.

24What did Sir Henry do when he saw the writer?

AHe felt ashamed about his behavior         BHe invited the writer to climb over to share his joy.

CHe called his wife to join them.            DHe ran away with the three shoots

I am a good mother to three children. I have tried never to let my profession stand in the way of being a good parent.

I no longer consider myself the center of the universe. I show up. I listen. I try to laugh. I am a good friend to my husband. I have tried to make marriage vows (誓约) mean what they say. I am a good friend to my friends, and they to me. Without them, there would be nothing to say to you today.

So here's what I wanted to tell you today: get a life. A real life, not a desire of the next promotion , the bigger paycheck, the larger house.

Get a life in which you are not alone. Find people you love, and who love you. And remember that love is not leisure, it is. Pick up the phone. Send an email. Write a letter. And realize that life is the best thing and that you have no business taking it for granted.

It is so easy to waste our lives, our days, our hoursand our minutes. It is so easy to exist instead of to live. I learned to live many years ago. Something really, really bad happened to mesomething that changed my life. If I had my choice, it would never have been changed at all. And what I learned from it is what, today, seems to be the hardest lesson of all.

I learned to love the journey, not the destination. I learned to look at all the good in the world and tried to give some of it back because I believed in it, completely and totally. And I tried to do that, in part, by telling others what I had learned.

By telling them this: Read in the backyard with the sun on your face. Learn to be happy. And think of life as a deadly illness, because if you do, you will live with joy and passion(激动) as it ought to be lived.

Xinhua News---The Beijing government has set out to recruit thousands of university graduates to work as junior officials in rural areas to both improve rural administration and ease the city’s employment problems.

The government plans to recruit 3,000 university graduates this year, 1,000 more than last year, to work as assistants to village heads or party secretaries in suburban areas.

People interested in jobs in Beijing’s rural villages and towns can send applications to Beijing Municipal Bureau of Personnel or log on to www.bjbys.com from February 1 through March 15.
