Admit it or not, many of us see that higher education equals a diploma, which in turns provides us with opportunities for a better life. But is that all college means?
“As tuition costs have skyrocketed, it makes sense (33) ______ people might try to get some of the benefits of college without paying,” commented the Atlantic. The full tuition at Yale for the 2014-2015 school year is $63,250. This breaks down to over $7,000 per month, while Dumas ,a 28-year-old Canadian, spent only a few hundred dollars at Yale in 2009, couch-surfing (作沙发客) for about a month and (34) ______ (take) classes.
However, Ollivier Dyens, deputy provost (院长) of student life and learning at Mcgill University, points out that most people go to college mainly to get a diploma. One of the benefits of a college diploma is that (35) ______ can help you earn more money. In 2012, young adults with a high school degree earned an average of $30,000, (36) ______ those with a college degree earned an average of $46,900 in the US.
According to Dumas, the best advantage of college is networking. “The kind of people I met in Berkeley or in Yale, I don’t know anywhere else in the world where so many smart, cool, open-minded, crazy people (37) ______ be concentrated,” he said.
Furthermore, a college is (38) ______ you discover what learning is about. “This will be the period when you go from teacher-taught to master-inspired, after which you must become a self-learner. The learning skills you acquire will be something you will cherish forever”, (39) ______ (write) to his daughter by Kai-Fu Lee, one of the most successful Chinese professional managers.
So (40)______ do you expect from college? A diploma, like-minded people, or simply a learning experience?
Windows8, apart from Windows95, is the biggest surprise and the only version of Microsoft’s operating system that has been changed from the core(核心)when compared to its former one.
However, a recent study has shown that under 20% of business owners would be willing to upgrade to the new version of Windows. The reason for this remains to be discussed and debated, and we will try to throw light on this research by providing you with some of the most common advantages and disadvantages of Windows8.
Generally speaking, there are a great number of plus sides related to upgrading from Windows7 to Windows8.
Speed—This is the biggest advantage to mention. Boot time has been reported to be up to nine times shorter than that with Windows7.
New passwords—Instead of typing your passwords, Windows8 will let you use gestures on your favorite photos to enter your password. This is not only practical but also extremely cool!
Windows8 experience—Apart from computers, Windows8 will be used on all devices, including smart phones, tablet PCs and so on. Also, owing to the fact that it has been specifically designed with touch screen users in mind, Windows8, besides using keyboard and mouse, will offer a whole new user experience.
However, there are still some disadvantages.
The first one that has to be mentioned is that there is no Start Menu from Windows. Yes, there is no Start button in the lower left corner, and this might be a real puzzle of many Windows users. Also, many users have had a problem to get used to the new interface introduced by Windows8. The biggest problem that is worth noticing is that Windows8 was originally designed for touch screen users, and this may have a bad effect on desktop users who have gotten used to doing everything with the help of their keyboard and mouse.

What’s delicious to eat and comes in a variety of colors? Eggplant! And no, it has nothing to do with chickens! This strangely named vegetable is, however, as versatile as an egg.It can be steamed, fried, and baked. It can be eaten by itself or combined with meats and other vegetables.
Eggplant was first grown in India in the 5th century BC. Its popularity soon spread to China and then throughout Asia. Finally, during the Middle Ages the vegetable made its way to Europe. Due to this egg–like appearance, eggplant got its name.In its early days, the vegetable was so bitter that people often called it a “mad apple.” This nickname started because people believed its bitterness was bad for one’ s health. People actually thought eggplant could cause insanity and cancer.
Fortunately today people know that eggplant doesn’t cause insanity or cancer. In fact eggplant is so healthy that it may prevent cancer. In addition, the brain and the heart benefit from this super vegetable.Since it's high in fiber, eggplant can improve digestion.
Italy, Turkey, Egypt, China and Japan are the leading growers of eggplant in the world today.Depending on its location, eggplant may be purple, green, orange or yellow–white. And it can be as small as a tomato or as large as a cucumber.Dish varieties range from simple to complex, with all of them being delicious.
Today, thousands of people gather in Loomis, Calif, for the annual Loomis Eggplant Festival. The main activity at the festival is eating delicious eggplant dishes. There is plenty more to do and see, though.Recipe contests, arts and crafts, performers, races and children's activities all “egg–cite” festival–goers. Most people at the festival would agree—eggplant is an “egg–cellent” vegetable.

A simple flower made headlines in the British press last week. How could that be? British Prime Minister David Cameron and his ministers were attending a reception(招待会)hosted by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. They insisted on wearing poppies (罂粟花) in their buttonholes.
What's wrong with that?
According to the Global Times, Chinese officials had clearly asked the UK delegation not to wear poppies. The British said that poppies meant a great deal to them on that day and they would wear them all the same.
So what's the importance of the poppy? It's a flower which has different cultural and symbolic meanings for British and Chinese people.
From the Chinese point of view, the poppy is a symbol of China's humiliation(耻辱) at the hands of European powers in the Opium Wars(鸦片战争) of the 19th century. Britain forced China to open the borders to trade — including in the opium — which was made from poppies grown in India.
Yet from the British viewpoint the poppy is a reminder of the killing during World War Ⅰ. Red poppies grew on the battlefields of Flanders in Belgium where many thousands of British soldiers died or were buried. Since then, Poppy Day (November 11 ) has become a time in the UK to wear poppies and remember the sacrifices of British soldiers and civilians in times of war.
So you can see that the poppy sets off strong feelings in the hearts of Chinese and British people for different reasons. And it makes sense for us to try to understand each other's standpoint.
Of course cultural differences can also be interesting and funny. And what one nation thinks is an acceptable gift may be viewed differently by their guest from overseas. US President Barack Obama gave a gift of an iPod to Britain's Queen — a dull person with no interest in music. Obama also presented Gordon Brown with a fine selection of American movies. But they were in US format and impossible to play on British DVD players.
Many countries have diplomats(外交官)stationed overseas. Diplomats provide information and advice to their governments back home. However, sometimes it would seem that even diplomats can overlook the cultural importance of a small flower.

On May 3, 2002, archaeologists in England found a grave of a man dating back to around 2300 BC. Buried with him were the tools of a hunter or warrior. There was a bone pin that may have been from a piece of clothing such as a leather coat. He carried a copper knife on his breast. The most amazing find was two gold earrings. That would have made him a man of distinction. Only a few centimeters from his head were two pots made of clay, tools and materials to make arrows, a bow and a dozen arrows for hunting and a second, smaller copper knife. Next to them lay a cushion stone, upon which the man could work metal.
His grave is the richest of any found from that period, because this man was buried with two gold earrings which are the oldest gold ever found in Britain (dated to 2470 BC). Besides, he was buried three miles from Stonehenge. Archaeologists tend to believe he was a member of a powerful class who might have organized the construction of Stonehenge and therefore he was called the “king of Stonehenge”.
Stonehenge was begun around 3000 BC. In about 2300 BC the huge stone circles were built. The biggest stone weighed approximately 20 tons. But the smaller blue stones, still weighing 4 tons on average, came from west Wales. It is not yet known how these were conveyed over a distance of 380 km. It is also a mystery how early man was able to construct Stonehenge without the use of modern construction machines and lorries.
He is an example of people who brought culture and new techniques from the European mainland to Britain. In terms of technical development people were going from the Stone Age to the Bronze Age and then to the Iron Age.
